President’s Message

Notice any changes? Finally, it looks like the parking lot is done and we have the new slide and water feature in the wading pool. But there’s more. In the Fall, the bathrooms will be renovated. Watch for the line of Port-a-Potties

outside to compensate for the disruption in the bathrooms. Also, the playground will be expanded and all the equipment replaced, except the climbing rock. More details on

this in this Reflector. We have been fortunate in having several grants approved but improvement are also the result of your donations to the Club and the hard work of volunteers to make this happen. We’d also like to recognize the support of City em-ployees and our local representatives - Jenny Gerbasi, Diane McGifford and Anita Neville in supporting the commu-

nity centre.

RVCC Board Meeting – February 19th, 2009

Sept/Oct 2009 w Reflector 3 Rivervie

FINANCIAL REPORT: A variety of costs are up, including unforeseen building repairs: carpets, emergen-cy lighting, sprinklers, fire extinguishers, heating, dishwasher, tractor and the sump-pump. Fund-Drive deposited $9,000, with a projected further $3,000. Ren-tals stand at more than $11,000. The RVCC is likely to be subjected to GST in the upcoming year due to increased revenues. Reflector is in a less than favourable situation, but invoices for advertis-ers have yet to be distributed. Carnival covered its costs more than adequately, hockey was profitable as well. ANNUAL FINANCIAL STATEMENTS The annual financial statement for 2008/9 were reviewed. Profits were dispropor-tionate for non-profit sports: this must be addressed. Future uniform/equipment purchases may offset this surplus.. GRANTS RVCC has been approved for grants; two Canada Summer Jobs positions, two Green-Team positions; one for outdoor maintenance positions and one for running the drop in programs. This allows the RVCC to employ a variety of people to fulfill all the tasks the Centre needs: painting the building and maintaining the fields. Families Forward grants were also approved. GCWCC has approved $27,000 for our bathrooms, and we received a further $30,000 through Community Places. Thus, we have $57,000 for newer, better bathrooms, which ideally will be built in the fall, before hockey begins. Dave Kressock is aiding us with the preliminary details. NEW TREASURER Charlene moves to nominate Léonne Bilodeau as treasurer, seconded by Ryan. DROP-IN SOCCER From May to August, our fields are booked by the city. Jino discusses potential drop-in soccer programme for children. Carla discusses the complex situation with the city’s relationship with our fields. HOCKEY Ryan reports on progress with hockey organizations. People increasingly view the Fort Rouge Hockey Association (FRHA) as an increasingly organized entity. Committees have agreed that if kids are to be moved, they will be moved in groups of three to retain some unity between similar athlete groups. We will have tryouts and online registrations as well. Ryan discussed details of independent online registration. Fort Rouge Hockey Association will also endea-vour in the future to help smaller local clubs register kids for their teams. Parents will be able to pay online, using “IT sports.” Challenges that online registration poses were discussed. The costs of organizing an IT sport system has been covered by an ancillary fee in the case of other community centres, but potentially could also be covered by the surplus funds possessed by the FRHA. CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECT Carla discusses the possibilities of the Climate Change Project. . PLAYGROUND UPDATE Bev discusses playground work. Proposals will be accepted from contractors.

RIFLE CLUB They will be moving out of the building on September 1st. It was agreed that RVCC can be flexible on the date if they have difficulty finding another space. GARAGE SALE Steve Lennon ran the garage sale. The sale made $600 last year, and $2000 was made this year. SUMMER CAMPS Registration is going very well, with weeks one and three having a large number of registrants needing additional staff. The summer camps will be financially viable. CONSTITUTION Bev discusses the changes in the constitution, which may be changed by next March. Sports convenors and their obligations to attend board meetings were discussed. USE OF CHEMICALS ON THE FIELDS There was a discussion on the use of chemicals. Possible biological alternatives were proposed as well as the need to discuss the need for a specialist’s opinion on field maintenance. SPORTS CONVENORS Laura McMaster will act as Co-Convenor of Basketball. Hugo discusses the gradual decline of basketball registrations. Lori discusses the U12 boys being in 1st place. U15 girls are 1st in the city. OTHER A piano was donated to the club by Julie Coy.. Carla also discussed the chal-lenges of our field maintenance work. . Bistro 71/4 donated $100 to reward the canvassers.

Riverview Chosen! Riverview has been chosen as a Manitoba community to participate in a 4 year project to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change. Fourteen rural and urban centres or neighbourhood organizations, including Riverview, have been selected for funding under this new initiative. Riverview will be working together with the Manitoba Government and will receive support for local projects and activities that reduce GHG emissions. Early action to reduce greenhouse gases is wise because the cost of climate change can be significant. There are spin-off benefits such as costs savings for individual households, improved public health and safer, cleaner communities. Individual citizens can also play a large role by changing the way they use energy and water, how they dispose of waste and what type of transporta-tion they use. The province is supporting community-led initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases. The one in which Riverview will be participating is called the Community Led Emis-sions Reduction (CLER) program pilot aimed at helping more Manitobans contribute to the fight against climate change. As participants in the program, Riverview will be work-ing through five stages before 2012:

• creating a baseline inventory and forecast of GHG emissions

• setting targets for GHG reductions • creating a local action plan with public input • implementing projects and activities in the lo-

cal action plan • monitoring, measuring and reporting on

progress The action plan may include projects and activities in the areas of waste-reduction, water management, transportation, energy measures, green procurement, green landscaping and lawn care measures and land use measures. A Climate Change committee is being established to plan and oversee the implementation of projects. If you are interested in participating on the committee, please contact Dennis Cunningham, Interim Chair, at [email protected] or Carla Chandler, General Manager at [email protected] or 452-9944. Within the next month, a half time Co-ordinator will be hired to assist the committee. If you have ideas for climate change projects, watch for more information on the website or in the Bugle for the name and con-tact information for the Co-ordinator.

Blurb from the Editor Hello fellow Riverviewers, So our summer, as far as it seems, has come and gone, and fall time is just around the corner. It seems to me that this summer has been a dismal one in terms of hot days and blue skies. But I guess it is still better of having a full year of -30 and blustery northern winds!! I hope that everyone has had a produc-tive spring and summer, got projects done or well underway that you had planned to complete this summer. I know my family and I have succeeded in redoing our front walk and stairs, which has brought us to the conclusion that we need to redo our porch and paint the house!!...Does it ever end?!?! Well here is to the summer of 2009, and the upcoming Fall and Winter. May it be gentle on us all. Rob Mazur P.S. Ideas, beefs or bouquets for the Reflector can be emailed to: [email protected]

Playground Updated

For years, the playground has remained the same, with few changes. No new equipment could be added because the structures were “grandfathered”; they were too close together and did not meet today’s standards. Some parents have complained about the climbing structure, as the gaps are too far apart for smaller children. The City looked at possibilities for improvements and decided to re-

place and expanded the entire playground. A contractor has been chosen and work on the playground will begin in the Fall. Everything is being

replaced, except the climbing rock. The playground will be extended to the area behind the day care, with that area for children under 6 years old and the existing area for older children.

The playground equipment chosen is innovative and creative, combining the climbing and .swinging

equipment with a musical area and a pretend stage for pre-schoolers.

Picture of the new structures will be on display at the community club soon. Come down and take a look!.

Summer Adventures Day Camp – 2009

This year marked the end of another successful season of Summer Adventures at Riverview CC! Due to popular demand, Riverview again hosted 8 weeks of Day Camps for children aged 6-12. This year’s camp was run by Sheena Gumbrill and Aaron Fraser (AKA Mr. Cheese), who did an excellent job of planning and implementing the camps. They were assisted by Kathleen, Brenda, and many others who took time out of their summer to help supervise and run activities with the many children registered in the camp. This year’s camp saw a variety of children, both from Riverview and beyond participating. Each week of themed activities had between 20 and 35 registered children, with some weeks being so popular that extra staff and junior counsellors were enlisted to help! The camp was run from Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. A typical day’s activities included crafts, cooking, races, scavenger hunts, team sports and wet activities such as attack of the flying sponges, as well as various field trips to places like Oak Hammock Marsh, A Winnipeg Blue Bomber Practice, IMAX theatre, Bird’s Hill Park and more! Thank you to everyone who joined us this summer. We hope you had a great time! If you missed us, please email [email protected] with your email and information, and we will add you to our mailing list for next summer! Camp experience surveys as well as official child-care receipts will be mailed out shortly. Please take a moment to fill out the evaluation form – this provides us with valuable information that can help us to im-prove our programs for the future. Surveys are available at the club, or online at our website at www.riverviewcc.ca. Completed surveys can be submitted electronically to [email protected] or if you prefer, by handing in a paper copy to the RVCC office.
