From The Executive Director Written by Lynn Tanner, CMCA, AMS

As I men-tioned in the October 27th

issue of the Reflections, we are continuing to pursue options available to us for the purchase of new playground equipment for Kerri Hornaday Memorial Park. This tot-lot, which is one of the main playgrounds for the community, was installed in 2000, almost eighteen years ago. Over the past few years, there have been ongoing items on the play-ground that have needed repair and/or replacement. In 2014, the suspen-sion bridge, which connected two main pieces of the playground was no longer safe and needed to be removed. It wasn’t possible to repair the bridge, so the decision became whether to go without this piece, or replace it. Given that the bridge was vital for all sections of the tot-lot to be able to be accessed, the Operations Committee decided to replace it in 2015, costing approxi-mately $4,000. Earlier this year, signs of the aging of the tot-lot continued to be apparent. As per the photos below, some areas are rusting and the base material in other areas of the unit is coming off. This is to be expected with equipment that is seventeen years old. In fact, we’ve been told that this equipment has lasted longer than may have been expected due to our diligence in annual, regular maintenance on the unit.

Not only is this one of the two main playgrounds of the community, this is also the site where we hold our popular Summer Rec program. So, it’s impor-tant that to ensure that we have a safe, kid-friendly playground, which meets the Public Playground Guidelines, available at this site.

The RCA staff and RCA Board of Directors are researching grant

funding options to purchase this equipment with the best savings possible. In the meantime, we have put together a focus group to evaluate the proposed playground designs. Our focus group consists of select families with two or more chil-dren, who use the playground regu-larly and whose children are enrolled in the Summer Rec program. The reason their enrollment in our pro-gram is helpful for this research, is that certain features parents may desire to have on a playground for their families use, albeit one-on-one, must be weighed against its use as part of our organized recreation program, where the child to adult ratio is not the same. In addition to the above qualifications, some parents in our focus group currently are or have been: scout leaders; PTA members with playground purchas-ing experience; and Summer Rec program directors. Collectively, their input was extremely helpful assist-ing us in purchasing equipment the community, as a whole, would like. I’d like to thank these residents for the time they’ve spent reviewing the details of a proposed playground and providing their feedback and suggestions.

In addition to the input as men-tioned above, the Architectural Standards Committee will be

reviewing the design for the color options/aesthetics and the financial aspect of the pur-chase will be reviewed with the Finance Committee. Additional information will be provided in future Reflections, as this project progresses.

We certainly have had our share of windy weather this season! The last high-wind event caused any remaining leaves to be removed from the trees, and some branches, also. At this time, the maintenance staff is focusing entirely on loose-leaf and bagged yard waste pick-up. If you have piles of larger brush, RCA Maintenance will not be able to pick it up at this time. In addition, the brush trailer is in use by staff and is not available for resi-dents to borrow during Fall Pickup. Please place branches/brush in a pile behind your house.

Once loose leaf pick-up is completed, if weather conditions allow, we will do one final sweep through the community to pick-up brush. However, to do so the equipment must be changed, which is labor intensive, and our main focus at this time is the completion of loose leaf pick-up. If additional community wide pick up becomes possible once leaves are all collected, an announcement will be made via

eMail Bulletin. Be sure to sign up if you haven’t already.

It’s getting dark earlier in the day now, and after changing our clocks back last weekend, it will be even earlier when dusk/dark-ness hits. That makes this next reminder even more important. Residents are being asked to ensure that you STOP at stop signs. I’ve received complaints and concerns about drivers that are barely slowing down at stop signs. After a quick, visual check they then accelerate into traffic. In both morning and evening hours there are children walking to/from bus stops, as well as pedestri-ans, bicyclists and other vehicles that drivers need to be cautious of. A few extra seconds that it takes to come to a complete stop could prevent an accident from occurring and having someone, perhaps a family mem-ber or neighbor, seriously injured. Thank you in advance for taking the extra time to keep our community safer.

Nursery School NewsGross Motor, or Large Motor, plays

such an important role in a young child‛s development. Gross motor skills

help a child gain strength and confidence in his/her body. It also helps them get exercise and physical activity, which is important for a healthy lifestyle. Our students, here at RNS, participate in large motor activities each day. Mrs. Cicero, our Large Motor specialist, engages all the children in fun songs, silly moves, and aerobic activities, like hopping, jumping, and skipping. The children are building muscles, working on coordination, and most importantly, having fun. Gross motor is an significant part to our well-rounded curriculum.

In our 4‛s program we talked a lot about community helpers this month. We discussed what community helpers do and listed some important helpers in our community, like police officers, firemen and women, doctors, teachers, nurses, and construction workers to name a few. We were even so lucky to have the local fire department come to visit our preschool and talk and teach our students about fire safety. The children even got to tour the fire truck and got some hands on learning.

Our 2‛s parents were able to engage in conversations on their toddlers progress thus far, with our fall phone conferences with Mrs. Tanguay. The children have come quite accustomed to our daily routines in the 2‛s classroom.

Many parents have commented on how vocal their toddler has become since joining our 2‛s program. This social gain is one of the many benefits to our 2‛s program.

Architectural Standards Committee (ASC) ASC Fall/Holiday Topics and Reminders

H o l i d a y Decorations

The ASC encourages every-

one to decorate their homes and property this season. Don’t forget to have your display up by December 11th to be included in the holi-day decoration judging by the Recreation Committee. The ASC asks that everyone please be consid-erate to your neighbors when setting up your decorations and remember that you will need to take down the items 30 days after the holiday.

Storage of Summer Items/Recreational Items

November 1st was the deadline to have the following summer items stored indoors for the winter: small children’s playhouses, children’s

toys, hammocks, summer shade structures, and screened enclosures. Window air conditioner units will also need to be stored indoors as well. The reason we ask that these items be stored indoors is to minimize the adverse visual impact of these items, especially since they cannot be used during the winter months. The ASC would like everyone to be in compli-ance before the snow starts flying. Inclement weather is not an excuse to not be in compliance. These items may be brought outside again on April 1st.

Halloween DecorationsWith Halloween past us, now

is the time to bring those spooky decorations indoors if you have not already done so. All Halloween deco-rations will need to be brought inside

no later than November 30th. Please do not discard your pumpkins on Common Property, please place them in bio bags (not more than 50lbs per bag please) and RCA Maintenance will pick them up.

Approved Project Window Signs

Have you completed an exterior modification project this year? Be sure to return your ASC approved window sign (the letter that is attached to your approval letter with your project number). The reason we ask for the sign to be returned is for review of the completed project and so we know if you finished your project. If you lost your window sign and completed your project, please e-mail our Architectural Standards Administrator, John Mancinelli, at

[email protected] and let him know you completed your project.
