Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, With Independence Day upon us, I am led to reflect on my nine years in the United States Navy. I re- turned from active duty in Iraq just over ten years ago. I am thankful for all in our congregation who have served in the Armed Forces. It was a risk and sacrifice for all of us. And, some of you, I know, paid dearly. For me, it meant riding in over 200 con- voys; never knowing if an IED would go off beneath us or if we would find ourselves in an ambush (many of our convoys were through tight city streets). Thanks be to God, only two of our Marines were in- jured by enemy fire during the deployment! The freedoms enshrined in our Constitution are worth fighting for. However, lately, I see a very un- American sentiment rising in our country. Immi-

grants, seeking freedom and a second chance in life, are being turned away, even when they legitimately fear for their lives in their home coun-tries. Parents are being heartlessly separated from their children at our borders for the “high crime” of simply seeking a better way of life. That is not the American way – that is not what I risked my life for in Iraq ten years ago. I went, because I believe in our founding principles. As Presi-dent Ronald Reagan said in his farewell address to the nation, “I've spoken of the Shining City all my political life. …In my mind it was a tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, windswept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace; a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity. And if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here. That's how I saw it, and see it still.” When our battalion (3rd Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment) first arrived in Iraq, our commanding officer reminded us of an important truth: We were Americans. “Remember,” he said,” we are the good guys.” We as Chris-tians have the responsibility to ensure that our country is faithful to the moral principles upon which this nation was founded. Let us work to en-sure that we are, and always will be, “the good guys.” Our goodness is our greatness. A blessed Independence Day to you and your loved ones, Pastor Jay

The Church Council meeting was held on June 4th and here are some highlights of discussions and decisions. Reviewed the minutes of the last meeting. Pastor’s Report Treasurer’s Report (available upon request and posted in fellowship hall) Evangelism – no report Worship – A special meeting was held on May 13th. The committee voted to extend the one service (10:00 a.m.) Sunday morning worship schedule until the end of September. Fellowship – There are Sundays throughout the summer available to anyone who wishes to sponsor a fellowship time after 10:00 a.m. worship. People are also invited just to a make a dish to share with the group. Independence Day celebration will be held on Sunday, July 1st. Those who have served are invited to bring a photo of themselves in uniform during their time in service – we will try to guess who is who. Social Ministry – no report Christian Education – no report Property – The roof in the breezeway by the fellowship hall is being painted by Dave

LeGoullon. Guidelines for the use of the Ministry Center have been posted. Roof bids have

been obtained.

Old Business – We heard from our Treasurer that the new balance of our mortgage on the Ministry Center is $328,080. The monthly mortgage payment is $2,200. Before refinancing it was $4,388 per month. Building Fund envelopes have been removed from the pew racks in the church. This was done because the monthly payments are now a part of our unified budget. Members are asked to keep that in mind as they give to the church. Special gifts to pay down the mortgage are always welcome. A donation has been received from Frank Mathis to complete funds needed to renovate the pantry. The gift is given in loving memory of his wife, Bonnie. A motion was made, seconded, and approved to update the air conditioning in the pantry, bike

shop, and outside bathrooms.

New Business – A bid on the narthex roof was presented by our Property chair. The bid is 30% higher than ex-pected. A plan was put in place to fund the roof repair without going to outside sources. A request was made to use memorial funds to replace worn out furniture in the Ministry Center. Request granted.

It was asked that the council/congregation be made aware of special events held by outside groups in the fellowship hall or Volkmann Community Room. Groups will be asked to inform the council at the time of their events. A proposal for a sign for the Ministry Center and a plaque for the newly designated Volkmann Community Room was presented by the pastor. The design was approved. Our J-Walkers group requested that fundraising for VBS shirts be allowed around worship on the

10th and 17th. Motion approved. Our treasurer mentioned that $50 in available in the designated

funds for VBS shirts.

The Saturday morning work crew keeps our property safe and beautiful. The time of service runs from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. If you would like to help out, just show up at the maintenance shed on the west side of our property. The morning concludes with donuts and coffee. You may also do tasks on your own schedule – just call the office for details. Thanks!

Open Invitation to Join Our Prayer Chain: The Prayer Chain is an excel-lent way for you to serve those in need, by praying for them. The duty of a Prayer Chain member is simply to converse with God on behalf of the person the prayer is requested for, and pass on the request to the next person on your Prayer Chain List. If interested please call Marge Hinds through the church office.

Healing prayers with the laying on of hands and anointing is held immediately following 10:00 am worship on the third Sunday of the month for July.

Eat, Pray, Love! Women’s Fellowship Group will not be meeting for the sum-mer. Look for information in the August Newsletter regarding resuming Eat, Pray, Love. Thank you to all of the Women of LCR for your participation and I look forward to seeing you in September.

Resurrection at the Beach Clean-up. On July 28th the Resurrection at the Beach Clean up will be held from 8:00 until 10:00 a.m. This beach clean-up meets the 4th Saturday of every month. We begin at the Minuteman Cause-way beach access (near the tikis). Buckets, grabbers, and gloves are provid-ed. Service hours also can be earned with this project. If you have any ques-tions please contact Bob Whittle through the church office.

Almost High Noon Knitting: The Prayer Shawl Ministry will be continuing

through July with their “Almost High Noon Knitting” instructional class. This class will be held on July 8th, & July 22nd at 11:30 a.m. in the Ministry Center. Contact Lynn Gray or the church office with any questions.

Community Car Wash Service with a smile. That was what I saw on Saturday, June 16th, at the car wash and Burger Bash event. Even with incredibly hot and sticky weather, and a bit of jostling for the burgers, the LCR team continued to provide service with a smile. And the hope is that that smile is what brings a new person into our church family but it also shows that LCR cares for our whole commu-nity family. So thank you for all that served with a smile last Satur-day - over 100 burgers served, 24 hot dogs chomped up and 18 cars washed - all with a smiling face. I am running a little low on greeters for the summer so if any folks are available to greet during the summer months, just shoot me an email @ [email protected], or sign up in the narthex. Laundry Ministry - You will notice that laundry small change re-ceptacles have been removed from the church narthex and fellow-ship hall. That is because of your generosity. We have five months of funds necessary to do the laundry of our pantry clients. We’re go-ing to take a break for a few months. Thanks for your generosity!

LCR is doing GREAT things! Thank you for your financial support now, but have you thought about leaving a legacy in your will after you leave this world? Contact your financial consultant or church office for ideas. If you would like Resurrection to be remem-

bered after you go to be with the Lord, be sure to name us in your will. Sadly, we’ve seen survi-vors not honor the known wishes of the de-ceased. Its hard to imagine, but it happens. Thank you!

Independence Day Celebration!

All invited to a special Independence Day lunch. July 1st right after the 10:00 a.m. Worship Service. Meal provided by LCR . Patriotic songs will be sung. Please bring a photo of yourself or family member (known to the congregation) in uniform. Drop picture off, with the per-son’s name on the back, to the fellowship hall before worship. During fellowship time, we’ll try to guess who’s who.

Plastic Free July: ‘Choose To Refuse’ Single-Use Plastic During July Imagine a world without plastic waste. There’s a global movement building to dra-matically reduce plastic use and improve recycling, worldwide. Are you willing to give up single-use plastic this July? FACT #1 9.1 BILLION tons of plastic has been produced since plastic was introduced in the 1950s. The amount of plastic produced in a year is roughly the same as the entire weight of humanity. FACT #2 Virtually every piece of plastic that was ever made still exists in some shape or form (with the exception of the small amount that has been incinerated). FACT #3 91% of plastic waste isn’t recycled. And since most plastics don’t biodegrade in any meaningful sense, all that plastic waste could exist for hundreds or even thousands of years. FACT #4 500 MILLION plastic straws are used EVERY DAY in America. That’s enough to circle the Earth twice. FACT #5 Nearly TWO MILLION single-use plastic bags are distributed worldwide every minute. FACT #6 100 BILLION plastic bags are used by Americans every year. Tied together, they would reach around the Earth’s equator 773 times! FACT #7 ONE MILLION plastic bottles are bought EVERY MINUTE around the world - and that number will top half a TRILLION by 2021. Less than half of those bottles end up getting recycled. FACT #8 8 MILLION METRIC TONS of plastic winds up in our oceans each year. That’s enough trash to cover every foot of coastline around the world with five full trash bags of plastic - compounding every year. FACT #9 There is more microplastic in the ocean than there are stars in the Milk Way. FACT #10 If plastic production isn’t curbed, plastic pollution will outweigh fish pound for pound by 2050.

Marine Resources Council’s Green Business Program

The Marine Resource Council (MRC) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that is

coordinating lagoon-wide efforts to Save the Indian River Lagoon. MRC’s Green

Business Program aims to help local businesses identify, adopt, and maintain money saving, sustainable

practices in an effort to protect the Indian River Lagoon. Through changing common practices to simple,

sustainable ones, any business can save money, improve public relations, and help restore the Lagoon.

Community Garden Network Blossoms in Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral Carolyn Wainright is organizing a network of community gardens in the Cocoa Beach/Cape

Canaveral area. Anyone interested in starting a community garden at LCR is encouraged to

first.

Sunday, July 15th – Cruickshank Sanctuary Hike in Rockledge (360 Barnes Blvd), 10 am – 12 pm. Take a guid-

ed hike through the Cruickshank Sanctuary and get to know one of the most unique habitats in Florida. The

Florida Scrub Jays are very friendly there. Bring closed toe shoes and sunscreen. Space is limited. Call (321)

Saturday, July 28th – LCR Beach Cleanup, 8-10 am. Meet at the tall tikis at the end of Minutemen Causeway.
