Sigmund Freud

One of the world’s most famous psychologists

Believed human consciousness has three distinct parts: id, ego and superego

idsuperego

Freud

The ego is the rational part of the mind The id is the instinctual aspect of the mind The superego is the minds conscious

Freud believed human personality results from the ego's efforts to resolve the conflicts between the impulsive id and the moral superego

Freud's Iceberg Theory

The id is totally unconscious

The ego and superego are both conscious and unconscious

Freud continued

Because Freud believed that most of the mind was unconscious, he stated that the ego uses defence mechanisms: distorting reality to deal with anxiety

Ex. to deal with the loss of a loved one the ego may use denial as a defense mechanism
