“Descent of the Holy Ghost” Titian, 1545

Reflection May 27, 2018 — The Solemnity of the

Most Holy Trinity

DT 4: 32-34, 39-40; PS 33: 4-5, 6, 9, 18-20, 22;

ROM 8: 14-17; MT 28: 16-20

On this Sunday, the week after Pentecost, we

celebrate The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

in the Church. We have celebrated this particular

weekend in the Church for more than 700 years.

Depending on your age, you may recall St. Pope

John XXIII who organized and oversaw Vatican II.

Interestingly, it was Pope John XXII (1316-1364)

who made this celebration official in the Church.

We consider the Holy Trinity to be one of the great

mysteries in the Church. It is the mystery of the

identity of God. Who is God? God is one God in

three Divine Persons — the Father, the Son, and

the Holy Spirit. Whether we are aware of this

consciously or not, this is something each of us

acknowledges in a number of ways, especially

when we go to Mass. Every time we make the

Sign of the Cross, we are making a statement

about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

That statement is made often. At minimum it is

made when the celebrating priest opens Mass

with a sign of the cross. Just prior to the Gospel

Reading we do an older version of the sign of the

cross by making a small cross on our forehead,

our lips, and our chest. The priest concludes the

Mass with a blessing, and we all make a Sign of

the Cross.

There are so many other times before, during,

and after Mass when we make the sign or the

cross, and there may be other times in our daily

lives when we do it. Pope Francis has said, “Every

time we make the sign of the cross, we draw

closer to God.” Perhaps we should do it even

more often.

***reflection from the Office of Stewardship and

Development

St. Thomas Aquinas serves as the Catholic Center at Purdue University. Our parish engages the youthful energy

of all its members to nurture their faith journey across all generations through liturgy, spiritual and intellectual formatio n,

stewardship, and justice with peace. We joyfully welcome all who wish to meet life's challenges through lived faith in Jesus Christ.

This reflection is for the upcoming

celebration of Pentecost Sunday and the

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. On the

solemnly of the Pentecost, we are celebrating

the birthdate of the Church. After the

Ascension of Jesus into heaven, the reading

in the Acts of the Apostles tell us that after

nine days the Holy Spirit was sent on the

nascent Church in the forms of a strong wind,

tongues, and fire.

So what do these three symbols teach us about the Holy Spirit?

Symbols often do not reveal the nature of a person, but signify a certain

reality of that person. The symbols of wind, tongue, and fire reveal

something about the Holy Spirit’s actions in our lives and in the world.

First, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of “a strong driving Wind.”

The wind is not visible to the naked eye, but can only be felt or its

effects can be seen. As Jesus would say in the gospel of John, “The

wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you

do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with

everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8) Jesus was comparing the

work of the Holy Spirit in the way the wind moves, and the way the wind

causes effects in the world without being seen and without being

controlled by us. Likewise, you can’t see the Holy Spirit, but can see his

effects. He works in ways we do not fully understand. He directs souls

who are abandoned to him in ways that are mysterious and powerful.

Second, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of Fire. It is impossible

for us to live in the world without light. The Holy Spirit is divine Light

that illumines our intellects to know the truth revealed by Jesus Christ.

His light shines in us and through us, thus transforming us into lights of

the world. Fire also has a purifying power. Metals like gold, silver, iron

are purified by means of fire. The Holy Spirit purifies the true followers

of Jesus for the sake of mission. In addition, fire can also be

transformative. It has the capacity to change any substance into its

own image. For instance, if we place a piece of wood or metal into fire,

it will eventually look like fire after sometime. Similarly, the Holy Spirit

does a similar function with souls consecrated to him. He completely

changes and transforms souls into the likeness of Christ.

Lastly, the disciples received the Holy Spirit in the form of a Tongue.

The function of the tongue is to enable us to speak. Without the tongue

we can’t communicate our thoughts to others. The Holy Spirit touches

and sanctifies our tongues to communicate God’s truths in people’s

hearts.

It is a sad reality the Holy Spirit is more forgotten today than ever. I

personally think now more than ever he should be given his proper

place, the place that rightfully belongs to him in Christian life. So on this

Solemnity of the Pentecost, let us ask the Holy Spirit to rekindle in us

the spirit of new life and enthusiasm, the fire of God's love. If we do,

then he will help us acknowledge the presence of the Blessed Trinity

dwelling within us and allowing him to reign in the world through our

words and actions. For, it is through the Holy Spirit that we are made

capable as God’s adopted children to share in the Trinitarian life and

love of God. Therefore, let us reclaim our Christian practice and

devotion to sign ourselves each day with this simple but powerful

prayer: “In the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.” By so

doing, we remind ourselves that we belong to God and are consecrated

to him by virtue of our baptism.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Baptisms

Are normally scheduled during or after the 5:30PM Mass on

Saturday, or during or after the 11:00AM Mass on Sunday.

The next baptism preparation sessions will be:

All Classes are 6:00-7:30PM

Please contact Eileen Strater in the Parish Office at 765-743-

4652 or [email protected] to register for the baptism

class and/or place your child’s baptism on the parish calendar.

Through the Sacrament of Baptism, God’s children are

welcomed into the Catholic faith family, which most commonly

takes place at a very young age. In this case, it is extremely

important for parents to know what they are asking when they

ask to have their children baptized. St. Tom’s baptismal

preparation program is for first time parents and

godparents. Sessions are offered every other month. Please

see the parish calendar or call the parish office for upcoming

dates and times.

Marriage

Just got engaged? Want to have your wedding here at St.

Thomas Aquinas? Please contact Matthew Andrzejewski in the

parish office at 765-743-4652 or [email protected]

to start the marriage process and to reserve your date on the

parish calendar. Our wedding ceremony guidelines can be

found on our website under the Faith Life tab.

Welcome New Parishioners!

We welcome all who wish to join our parish family. You may

register by visiting the parish office or by clicking on the link on

our homepage at www.boilercatholics.org. We’re glad you are

here!

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Are you or someone you know interested in becoming

Catholic? The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

process is designed for those who wish to become full

members of the Roman Catholic Church. These sessions are

also a great way to learn more about the Church. The

individuals in the process are involved in a journey of faith and

conversion which includes learning about the beliefs, life,

liturgy and apostolic work of the Catholic community. The RCIA

process at St. Tom’s has two distinctly different tracks, and is

geared around the Purdue calendar, with weekly sessions

beginning in September. Participants can expect to receive

Sacraments of Initiation during the Easter Vigil Mass. To

determine which track of the RCIA process will best suit your

needs, or for more information, contact Eileen Strater in the

parish office at 765-743-4652 or [email protected].
