Supplementary Borings for Ha;i.ku Road _ Wl4.ening :Heeia,·· Koo1aupoko, dahu, Hawaii. Tax Map Key: 4,....6-17: Por. 22

As requested, one boring a:n:d 2 probings were made at the Southeast corner of Hai,ku Wciods where the proposed Haiku Road widening {Sta. 56+30 to Sta. 57+75) is contemplated over the top of a slope. The preliminary sketches generally i-ndicated that the outer portions of the proposed

_ road will tequ,ir'e about 8 ft of fill along t:he top of a 2+ horizontal to 1 vertical slope that is about 30 ft in height.

The boring generally ind_ica_ted medium to stiff clayey silts (ME) with traces of decomposed rocks for the depth drilled. The water contents of the soils generally ranged from 50 to 60%.

in general, fills over 2 to 1 slopes should be avoided. An elevated structure for the sidewalk. area should be considered.

Because of the steep side slope and relatively moist in-place soils, pile foundations ate recommended for the elevated structure for this portion of the roadway.

In general, 12-in. by 12-in. piles to about 25-ft depths may be considered. To minimize the disturbance of the existing slope, predrilling of the upper 15 to 20 ft is recommended. The contractor may adjust tbe drill depths in the field. The piles may be driven and s.ocketed into place for the bottom 5 to 10 ft·. The piles should be driven to about 30 blows per foot for the last 2 ft, assuming that about 18,000 ft-lbs of driving en~r'gy is used. Overdrl, ving should be avoided and 20 blows per fraction of an inch may be considered as refusal. Design

values of about_ 2_2_t__ons_.per:__p4=le-may-be·-consideFed. Lateral resistances or~out .}: --tort-per pile may be considered assuming that the spaces around the _p_iles_ are -backfi-lled~

Some f_uture slope adjustments or maintenance should be expected in this section due to erosion, creep and settleii.lents.·

To minimiZe erosion, a blanket of fairly well-graded, granular material may be placed on the slope face around the elevated structure.

A low pile supported retaining wall is contemplated at the top of slope~ The wall should be backfilled with granular material. Lateral earth pressures equivalent to 40-lb fluid plus surcharge for vehicular loads should be used. The back of the wall should be well drained and the base of the wall should. be placed.on firm ground co.ifeted with 2 in. of sand.

A-ttached are a Boring Loc~tion Sketch, boring logs, laboratory test results. and. limitations.

BORING LOGS

The stratification lines shown on each of the boring logs represent the C!,pproximate boundary between soil types anci the transition may be gradual.

Symbols

Symbols used generally are in accordance with the Unified Soil Class~fication System.

Where a parenthesis "(MH)" is used, the soil sample was classified by visuC!,l observation of the sample recovered.

Where no parenthesis ''MHi' is used, the soil sample was classified from either the Atterberg limit or sieve analysis test results.

LiMITATIONS . ··.

in general, soil formations are commonly erratic and rarely uniform or

regular. The boring logs indicate the app·roxiwat~ subsurface soil

conditions encountered only at the drill holes where the borings were

made at the times designated on the logs and may not represent conditions

at other locations or at other dates. Soil condit:j.on.s and water levels

may. change with the passage of time a_nd construction methods or improve

ments at the site.

During construction, should subsurface conditions much different from

those in the borings be observed, enco~ntered, or otherwise iqdicated,

we should be advised immediately to review or reconsider our recommen

dations in light of the new developments.

If there is a substantial lapse of time between the submission of this

report and the start of work at the site, or if conditions have changed

due to natural causes, plan changes, or construction operatioqs at OJ;'

adjacent to t:he site, it is recomm~nded that this report be reviewed to

cietermine the applicability of the recommendations considering the time

lapse, changed conditions, and changes in the state of the art of soil

engineertng.

Our professioqal services were performed, findings obtained and
