Our mission is to inspire young people and expand their

learning through the arts.In our own words…

The arts bring joy to children.

An education is incomplete without the arts.

The arts can help children on the edge find that one thing at school to inspire them.

Every child deserves to experience the power of the arts.

The arts teach empathy, and we need kids to grow up caring about others.

SPRING 2018

TAHIRA meets Keneth at a 5-day residency in storytelling. A shy, reserved third grader, Keneth is inspired to step out of his comfort zone and become a leader.

Keneth and classmates perform in front of 350 guests at the YA gala, earning a standing ovation.

JUNE 2018

OCTOBER 2018

Keneth and TAHIRA reconnect at Cambridge Elementary, where they share a story. Now a fourth grader, Keneth reveals that he has created a number of stories and spends time at recess performing his stories for his friends.

The change I’ve seen in Keneth over the last year began with TAHIRA. By opening the world of storytelling to him, she helped him discover his own storytelling talents. I believe that finding these talents was quite a surprise for him! This knowledge has led to an all-around change in his demeanor — the once shy young man now holds his head high, happily looks people in the eye, and has a ready smile when he does. TAHIRA has made an enduring impression on Keneth which will be of life-long benefit.”—Lisa Garwood,Music Teacher/Choral Director/Assembly Coordinator, Cambridge Elementary School

The YA teaching artist taught me that learning can happen in many different forms and the integration of drama and the arts can add a new dimension to the lesson, beyond just paper and pencil form. More students were fully engaged and exploring their creative expression throughout the arts learning process.”—Aughtney Khan, Teacher, Wiggins Elementary

AMAZING! AWESOME! Everyone, I mean EVERY SINGLE ATTENDEE loved this performance. The education, audience participation, drumming, dancing, and TEACHING were superb and appreciated by every member of the school from Kindergarten to adult. This was an astounding presentation — professional, well-crafted, creative. A great experience for all. Creative BeginningsWe train teachers and work directly with our youngest learners to explore open-ended inquiry and hands-on art-making.

I saw that students with learning disabilities were no longer ‘handicapped’ in their ability to demonstrate their understanding of content. One student is very smart and verbally strong in class but can not articulate comprehension through a standard test; handwriting and spelling are poor, and letter and number reversals occur. While using cartooning the student was able to complete the assignment fully without error. The student’s completed work was beautifully drawn and she spent more time on her narration, so spelling errors were minimal.” —Veva Tronci, Teacher, Paterson 15 Elementary School

Our 45th yearFALL WINTER SPRING

Trustee, Liz Fillo, hosts the 45th anniversary kick-off event, with a special performance of Chip & Gus, a ping pong play.

Trustees, Tanuja Dehne and Michelle Cash, launch our 45th anniversary campaign to raise $450,000 for endowment, scholarship, diversity, and social justice programs.

We begin work in diversity, equity and inclusion to enhance teaching artist practice around issues including gender, ability, and race, with the goal to honor all students’ experiences.

Work in Eastern Pennsylvania gets a boost when Bucks AIR and their artists, donors, and school partners join the YA team.

With funding from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, we launch United We Create, a program using the arts to build bridges between Muslim and non-Muslim students.

Trustees vote to establish the role of Emeritus Trustee and inaugurate the first class in June: Carol Belt (posthumous), Larry Capo, and Arthur Factor.

Jeannine Cimino, Carol Golden, Jeff Vega and Tom Sullivan dance at Dazzle celebrating 45 years of arts education. We exceed the fundraising goal and raise over $100,000 for the Scholarship Fund.

Arts Lab, a research-based model to impact chronic absenteeism, is developed in partnership with Wilson Elementary School in Hamilton. The project is awarded funding in September 2018 with grants totaling $625,000 from The Princeton Area Community Foundation and the Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation.

We honor Arts Champions at our 45th Anniversary Birthday Celebration and thank donors for helping us transform lives with the best arts education has to offer!
