Reduce Our Wasteline in Waterloo Region Spring cleaning - a time to reuse and recycle By Helen Hall A hhh spring! The sun is shining, the snow is melting, and you discover your backyard is full of dog poop. Rather than being discouraged, get out your green bin - put in a strong (approved) biodegradable bag or two - and thank your puppy for providing us with some great organic material that will be spread on a local farmer’s field. When the snow melts and the weather gets better, there always seems to be so much to do to clean up around the house. This doesn’t mean that your garbage has to be overflowing at the curb on collection day as most materials can be reused (like the dog poop) or recycled. Kathleen Barsoum, of the Region of Waterloo’s Waste Management Centre, said people often clean out their garages before the new gardening season starts. “Household hazardous waste is a biggie,” Barsoum says. “Everyone has loads of old paints, cleaners, lawn care products in the back of their garage.” Barsoum said these items should be kept in their original containers and dropped off at the hazardous waste depot at the Region of Waterloo Waste Management Centre on 925 Erb Street West in Waterloo. There is a minimum $2 charge for the first 50 kg on all loads that come into the landfill. If you are heading to the Waste Management Centre, you might as well fill up the car with any household items that you no longer need. Goodwill has a donation centre that accepts clothes and small household items. Large items, like furniture, can be dropped off at its Kitchener Donation Centre at 1348 Weber Street East. Leftover renovation items are also frequently found piling up in the garage or the basement. They can also be recycled. Habitat for Humanity of Waterloo Region takes a wide range of renovation items, like windows and doors, lighting and electrical components, toilets and sinks, and hardware, as well as working appliances, indoor and outdoor furniture, and tools. Habitat for Humanity has two Restore collection locations - one in Waterloo and one in Cambridge. It also operates a pickup depot at the Waterloo Waste Management Centre between April and November each year. It is open Monday and Thursday through Saturday between 8:30am to 5pm. Old and outgrown bicycles can also be left for recycling at the Waterloo Waste Management site between April and October. There are several bicycle recycling operations in Waterloo Region, including Recycle Cycles. Recycle Cycles is a Community Bicycle Resource Centre run by The Working Centre that provides inexpensive reconditioned bicycles for children and adults, shop facilities for individuals to repair and maintain their own bikes, a large supply of used, refurbished and new parts and learning opportunities for volunteers to gain bicycle repair experience. YARD WASTE PICKUP The yard waste curbside pickup starts again in the third week of March. Yard waste is collected by the Region of Waterloo from March to November, on your regular garbage and recycling collection day. In early spring, many homeowners find tree branches on their property left over from winter storms. Branches have to be cut to 3 foot lengths and bundled and tied. Spring cleaning - a time to reuse and recycleBy Helen Hall

Ahhh spring! The sun is shining, the snow is melting, and you discover your backyard is full of dog poop.Rather than being discouraged, get out your green bin - put in a strong (approved)

When the snow melts and the weather gets better, there always seems to be so much to do to clean up around the house. This doesnt mean that your garbage has to be overflowing at the curb on collection day as most materials can be reused (like the dog poop) or recycled.

Kathleen Barsoum, of the Region of Waterloos Waste Management Centre, said people often clean out their garages before the new gardening season starts.

Household hazardous waste is a biggie, Barsoum says. Everyone has loads of old paints, cleaners, lawn care products in the back of their
