The Redstone Huntsville Chapter pro-vided three entries in the annual Veterans Day parade. The parade was lead by a Deuce-and-a-half belonging to the Veter-ans Memorial Museum. AUSA members were on board the truck and handed out over 6,000 hand held flags to other chap-ter members on the street who distributed them to the parade attendees. The chapter also had a segment of the parade headed by chapter officers carrying the chapter banner. The final Redstone Huntsville el-ement in the parade was a section of our Young Professional members. The weather was perfect and the parade route was lined with citizens paying respect to this most significant day.

• Veterans Day Parade Opening Cer-emony attended by numerous Generals including AMC Commander, General Dennis L. This event was participated in by approximately 24 Redstone Chapter volunteers. Their sacrifice and heroism was honored for serving our country. They had been wounded and some of the heroes had severe injuries, including blindness and limb amputation. Happy, Prosperous & Healthy New Year to all from your Southernmost satellite !

November 4, 2015 brought members and guests of the Anniston Area “ Gal-lant Pelham” Satellite Chapter of the Redstone-Huntsville Chapter of the As-sociation of the United States Army to Classic on Noble in Downtown Annis-ton to its quarterly general membership breakfast meeting featuring noted author and historian Richard Barlow Adams at the AUSA podium. Mr. Adams is the foremost authority on Major John Pel-ham, “Gallant Pelham”, the Chief Artil-lerist of General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia during the War Between the States. Major John Pelham, a native of Jacksonville, Alabama, has many important sites and notable places named after him here in East Central Ala-bama. Not only did Mr. Adams inscribe dozens of copies of his books for the full house, but many local historians and buffs, amateur and professional, to in-clude Sons of Confederate Veterans and United Daughters of the Confederacy at-tended and applauded the presentation. State President Dave Seay, and Redstone - Huntsville Chapter President, John, and First Lady, Tammy, Wright, joined us for

this festive autumn morning, and brought greetings and news to our community of what America’s Army is doing with and for them.

Our satellite chapter’s affiliation with the Major General Watson Chapter of the Chemical Corps Regimental Associa-tion (MGWC-CCRA) continues to grow, not only in helping fund their veterans’ projects, but also in visiting veterans’ homes at Christmas. Our VP for Mem-bership, Ms. Kathy Harvey, participated in and visited several homes during this project. Look elsewhere in this edition for photos of these visits.

January brings an annual community event in which Gallant Pelham has regu-larly participated. Anniston Army Depot (ANAD) will again hold its Wounded Warrior Hunt (WWH), designed to bring in area disabled veterans to pursue, hunt and bag some of the many deer roaming ANAD’s thousands of acres of forested wilderness. The third weekend in Janu-ary brings together these disabled but still enthusiastic sportsmen, and many of the business and community leadership to highlight this unique community partner-ship and event. Max Dodd, the Satellite Chapter VP for Civilian Affairs, will head

up our delegation for the weekend events. We see late winter - spring as being a

busy time for us in the Anniston Area Sat-ellite. Plans are already underway to bring the Commander of ANAD, Colonel Martine Kidd, to a general membership (GM) breakfast meeting in late February - March. It has been our tradition to bring the commander forward to members and guests to discuss the current state and the future plans for this locomotive of area business & commerce, and this linchpin of American Military Readiness ~ the tradition continues. More to follow on this exciting event.

Later spring will provide us an oppor-tunity to again focus on the importance of this area in our nation’s military his-tory. Just as we brought the foremost au-thor on Major John Pelham to us in No-vember, we look forward to bringing the authoritative voices on the 92nd Infantry Division to a spring GM breakfast. The local Theta chapter of the national fra-ternity, Omega Psi Phi, is purchasing the Montieth Amphitheater from the McClel-lan Development Authority (MDA), the successor quasi-governmental entity of the former Fort McClellan. The Omega Men, as they are known, were led by the

fact that the 92nd, one of two divisionsof all black Soldiers in the Second WorldWar, stood up, mobilized, and deployedfrom the Montieth. It is said that Presi-dent Harry S. Truman based part of hisdecision to integrate our nation’s armedforces upon the performance of this divi-

This is the time of the year that most of us are making resolutions or setting goals for the New Year. You probably even know a few people who have al-ready given up on some of their resolu-tions.

The thing about resolutions and goals is that most of the time they are all about our self-improvement. We want to lose weight, exercise more, make more money, lower our golf handicap, spend more time with fam-ily, travel more, and many other things. However, these resolutions are all about

us. There is nothing wrong with self-im-provement, so keep doing them.

But what if we made a resolution or set a goal to make the world a better place? What if we made a resolution or goal that was about helping others or making their lives better? Focusing on others is how we can put significance in our lives. Bob Buford in his book, Halftime, says that success is all about us and significance is all about others.

So, how can you get significance in your life? First, you have to start. You have to figure out what you are best

at doing and what you are passionate about doing. Next, decide how you can use your strengths and passion to help others. Then stop trying and start do-ing.

In the movie Pay it Forward, teacher Eugene Simonet challenges his class to go out and make a difference in the lives of others. He tells his students to think of an idea to change our world, and then put it into action. Otherwise, start doing.

What if you made a resolution to make a difference in the life of some-

one every week? Or what if you madea resolution to help an organizationmake a difference in the lives of sev-eral people or some group? By makinga goal focused on others in addition toyour other self-improvement goals, youwill be heading toward a life of signifi-cance.

To effectively accomplish these goals you must be intentional about doingsomething every day or every week oron a consistent basis. Most people havegood intentions but you must turn goodintentions into good actions to move to-ward a more significant life.

So I challenge you to get intentional. Find something you can do to make adifference in the life of someone else.Do it intentionally. Do it consistently.Think big but start small. Start whereyou are, but start.

By making a different kind of resolu-tion, this year just might be your bestyear ever.

10 AUSA Salute February 2016

What is the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA)? AUSA is the Army’s Profes-sional Association. It is a private, non-profit educational organization established in 1950. Members include all ranks (four-star to recruit, Active Army, Reserve, Nation-al Guard, and Retired), Department of the Army Civilians, patriotic private citizens, and Sustaining and Corporate members. All support a well-prepared Army, with well cared for Soldiers and their families. The Redstone-Huntsville Chapter #3103 was charted in 1959 and has been selected as the Best Chapter 11 out of the past 12 years to include 2015.

What does AUSA do? AUSA represents every member of the US Army, uniformed and civilian, and their families. AUSA is the voice for all components of the Army. AUSA fosters public support for the Army’s role in national security through an ac-tive dialogue with congressional members and Executive Branch officials.
