REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN On injuries: “[Brandon] Scherff hurt his ankle, came back into the game and [Chase] Roullier hurt his knee a little bit but he came back into the game.” On QB Case Keenum’s performance: “Well a combination of things, really. A couple bad decisions maybe – jumping over the pile on fourth and one. You have to always protect the ball than get half a yard. I think he got his arm hit on one. Then the safety read his eyes on another one, and I can’t remember the other one. Obviously, we have to do a better job of protecting the football with this unit.” On the defensive struggles: “Well, we put them in a hole early. We gave them a 7-0 lead and threw the ball right to Ha Ha [Clinton-Dix]. I think we had another turnover and gave them a short field three times in the first half. But still, the sudden changes happen in pro football and we have to do a better job of getting off. Being on the sidelines in defense, I felt like there was some effort there, some physicality this week. There’s still a couple things coverage-wise there in red zone that we have to get cleaned up – somebody not covering their guy or played in and out and somebody didn’t play at the end, somebody played the out or two guys played the out. Whatever they did, we have to get cleaned up. But effort-wise, tenacity, I felt a little bit better but we have to be more productive.” On the second half play calling: “Well, we called the first run to Chris [Thompson] and he got nine yards. At second down and one, I called the same play again. We have one of those RPO-type [run-pass option] thing, and I thought there was a big hole there where he could’ve gotten a yard but he got stopped short somehow. And then on third and one, we called our short yardage play and AP [Adrian Peterson] couldn’t get a yard and then we tried to sneak it on fourth and a foot and jumped over the pile and got slapped out of there.” On motivating the team after third straight lost: “We have to stick together and that’s all we can do. We’re in this together and nobody wants to be in the position that we’re in. This is the National Football League; teams win and lose every week. We happen to have lost our first three, by three very good football teams. We have a lot of very good guys on offense that have never played together before until these past three games. We have some talent. We just have to coach them up better, play better, be more balanced and protect the football.” On pressure on offense and Chicago Bears LB Khalil Mack: “Yeah, not getting down 21 to nothing, that would help and not being third down long, that would help as well. We tried a couple of different things out first down. We had some play action shots called and we thought we had a good protection plan going. But we had a sack on one of them that we lost on a looping defensive tackle on another sack. We tried to keep tight ends in to bang him, we tried Chris Thompson bang him, we tried a little bit of everything. He is just a great player. Unfortunately, when he gets in a position that he was in tonight, being up in some third downs, you’re going to see a special player shine and he did.” On potentially starting QB Dwayne Haskins Jr.:

REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN On injuries: “[Brandon] Scherff hurt his ankle, came back into the game and [Chase] Roullier hurt his knee a little bit but he came back into the game.” On QB Case Keenum’s performance: “Well a combination of things, really. “No, not really. I think the most important thing is that we have some continuity. I can’t change people every five minutes, and I have to give Case an opportunity playing with these new guys. This is his first time in this offense. Donald Penn, Ereck Flowers, their first time in this offense. Terry [McLaurin], Trey Quinn only played two games last year. I made this point before, we’re not going to be perfect but we need to be better. I think that we can get better. Otherwise if I didn’t think we had a chance to get better, then I would make a change. I feel like Case has the tools to become a very efficient quarterback in this offense to get us some victories here moving forward.” On if he thinks three consecutive losses has an impact on the fans: “It’s brutal, it’s brutal. We are giving everything we have. We’re not producing, we’re not playing good enough at home. We’re not giving these guys a reason to use this home field advantage. That’s the most disappointing thing because we have a great home field advantage when it’s rocking and we’re in the game. Third downs are a lot more difficult for the opposing team. Our players get more into the game. We just haven’t been able to get any momentum in the last home games here. So, here in the fourth quarter late trying to make a comeback, but then we fumbled. Something has to be done, we have to do a better job at home.” On the issues with the defense: “I think communication isn’t the issue, just somebody that got picked. We know are man-to-man, so I don’t know what happened. I will have to look and see. We’ve had some people drop coverages before in man-to-man and those bunches of stacks and pick plays and play actions. No excuses, but we just have to figure out why. I don’t know if that happens all the time. It’s happened a couple of times. Indianapolis got us a couple times last year. Obviously tonight they showed up.”

Page 3: REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN - Amazon S3€¦ · On motivating the team after third straight lost: “We have to stick together and that’s all we can do. We’re in this together

REDSKINS QUARTERBACK CASE KEENUM On the interceptions: “Sure. First one, I thought Trey [Quinn] ran a pretty good route. I overshot him a little bit, tried to go deep down early in the game. It just kind of flew on me a little bit, safety’s in a great spot and made a play. Tough deal. Second one, I tried to throw a deep out route to Paul [Richardson]. Tough pocket but this is the NFL. I left it inside and the guy made a great play. Third one, we ran an all go, tried to hit Vernon [Davis] down the seam, the safety read my eyes and made a play.” On lack of passing game success tonight: “A number of different things. Obviously, they rushed pretty good. They did a good job with that. We can be better. You got to do better.” On if he is responsible for the fumbles: “It’s all on me. You turn it over that many times as a quarterback, I let my team down. This is all on me. I really do. I take complete responsibility. I have to take care of the ball better. That’s my number one job. And especially the way our defense was playing early, getting after the quarterback and doing a good job keeping everything in front of them. They got all the momentum off of the turnovers. They scored a lot of points off of turnovers, so that’s all on me.” On the fourth and one play: “I was just trying to sneak. I mean just trying to get over the top. We got lined up a little late, so I saw those big guys lined up and geared up ready to go and I just tried to jump over the top.” On staying focused: “We just keep doing what we do. I don't read any articles or things on social media. Nobody's opinion matters except what's in that locker room.” On the importance of consistency: “You want to be consistent. I think it's important to be consistent. You want that from your quarterback. It's really important. I think it’s something that the entire team needs to count on. It’s my job to be the same person all the time and when you’re not, it’s tough. You put your team in a tough spot.”

REDSKINS RUNNING BACK ADRIAN PETERSON

On where he feels the running game sits after three games: “I feel like [we] definitely had a better quality of runs. We were definitely more consistent with it. Me personally, I have to be better in certain situations. The one that stands out the most to me, that third-and-one. Just staying true, keeping front side. Cramming for the first down. I saw the flow [of the defense] and decided to take it backside and kinda got tripped up on [an offensive lineman]’s feet and I thought I got the first down. Me, that’s a game changer, first down, new set of downs, seven minutes to go. [That] would have put us in position to score seven, now we’re down six with six minutes to go. So, that’s huge when you think about that. And think about how the game went in the first half and leading up to that point and not being able to execute.” On running out of the shotgun compared to other formations:

Page 4: REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN - Amazon S3€¦ · On motivating the team after third straight lost: “We have to stick together and that’s all we can do. We’re in this together

“To be honest with you, it doesn’t matter if it’s out of the shotgun or the pistol, it’s designed to execute a certain way. But that’s me being more patient or a faster pace run then I can go out and get it done. I feel like the down runs I had, they were pretty successful, they were good. To me, it doesn’t matter if it’s out of gun, pistol, I-formation, fullback in front of me. It doesn’t matter.” On struggles with the offense: “Disbelief because we have so much talent and this is the third week in a row that we’re just sitting here like ‘God.’ You know, [if] we can just get it going for four quarters. We have a really good team. Thinking about everything that happened today, four, five turnovers, just missed opportunities in the run game, the pass game. I think the defense did an outstanding job, we put them in some terrible positions. There we are with seven minutes in their territory and we just need to convert to put points on the board and we have a game, it’s six minutes left. That’s how close we are. It’s all about just learning from this. I know guys realize how good we are. Tonight was the perfect example of coming back out second half, having a different energy to us and we weren’t giving up. We can tell with how we played and how we put ourselves in position, of course we need to execute. We just gotta improve on the things can improve on.”

REDSKINS WIDE RECEIVER TERRY McLAURIN

On the frustration of losing: “It's frustrating when you lose. We just got to play two full halves of football. It felt like in the 3rd quarter we had a lot of momentum. It doesn't matter because we lost. We have no time to sulk, it’s short week. We got to go back to get one in the division this week. We're going to look at the film over these next two days, get our bodies right and go back at it on Wednesday.” On of scoring a touchdown in every game thus far: “I'm a win-loss kind of guy. So when I scored, we lost. At the end of the day, what I want to do is come out here and be productive for my team. I'm trying to do that to the best of my ability. At the end of the day, I want to win and we all want to win. In the box score, it doesn't say 'Terry had a great game, it says ‘the Redskins lost.’ I feel like that. Our team feels like that. That's how I feel.” On staying focused during a losing streak: “Well, I just worry about the people in our building, to be honest. Everybody has a job to do in the building. As media people, you guys have jobs to do. But me personally, I don't point the finger. I've never been raised that way. When things get hard, you turn on your teammates, you turn on your family? I've come from cultures where we've had ups and downs. Adversity hits, but it’s how you come back. I'm not pointing the blame on anybody. I'm not jumping ship on anybody. I’m going look at myself in the mirror and see what I can do better and come back stronger on Wednesday. I feel like we're all going to take that approach and try to get a win in the division next week.” On turning the ball over five times: “We don't want to turn the ball over at all, especially when it’s that many times. You can’t win an NFL game turning over the ball. It just stings because we felt like we've lost in three different ways. I like said, we just got to continue to look ourselves in the mirror. Everybody has a hand in that. It's not just one person. We're going to try and get those corrected going into next week.” On if it's tougher losing from turnovers: “That's the big thing about the NFL, especially being a rookie that I'm noticing is little mistakes can come and bite you. Every team in the league is good. I feel like everybody sees more when we're playing with tempo, our defense is flying around, we're moving the ball great and we're a tough team to handle. But when we have self-inflicted things – turnovers, penalties, whatever it may be – it’s tough to keep our momentum going. As a team, we're going to continue to look at that, look ourselves in the mirror and get better.”

Page 5: REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN - Amazon S3€¦ · On motivating the team after third straight lost: “We have to stick together and that’s all we can do. We’re in this together

REDSKINS LINEBACKER RYAN KERRIGAN

On the frustration of losing: "It's frustrating. It's been like three different kinds of losses. Blew a lead Week 1, last week we didn't stop the run defensively, tonight, we got ourselves in a hole and couldn't get out. It's frustrating for sure." On losing at home: "Home field should be a place where we take care of business, and we haven't done that the past few outings that’s for sure. I think tonight was kind of in line with that." On staying on Coach Gruden's message: "You got to move on. Move on quickly. Especially with this short week with Monday Night Football. Got to get in, get your treatment tomorrow, then it’s Giants on Wednesday; It's all Giants." On the feeling of being 0-3: "We got a long way to go. We dug ourselves a little bit of a hole here. We have the talent in there. I truly believe in the personnel that we have – on the coaching staff and on the roster. We just have to put a complete game together. Defensively, it's like we played a great first quarter, terrible second quarter, and a pretty good second half. We just got to find a way to just play consistently for four quarters." On the importance of not pointing fingers: "We all have a hand in these losses for sure. Defensively, offensively, special teams, we all have a hand. I think it's about being accountable and fixing what we're doing wrong." On noticing a difference in the first quarter compared to the second quarter: "No. We just didn't respond well to sudden change. They got the ball, turnover deep down into [our] territory. At that point, we got to hold them to a field goal attempt. That's our goal whenever a situation like that happens. We got to hold them to a field goal attempt and not allow them to get into the endzone. We didn't do that, and that's why the scoreboard looked the way it did."

REDSKINS LINEBACKER COLE HOLCOMB On what the message was at halftime: “It ain’t over, we still got 30 minutes left. Had a bad first half, still had 30 more minutes to pay and honestly, I thought we came out and fought pretty hard." On what the defense did better in the second half: “Just executing. In terms of, ‘Hey, we’re going to have a call and we’re going to execute how we’re supposed to execute it.’ When we do that, good things happen.” On Bears Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky’s performance: “Mitch [Trubisky] played a great game. Hats off to him, always knew he was a good quarterback. He struggled a little bit [this year], but he came out and he played a good game today.” On how the defensive unit gets on the ‘same page’: “If it’s, as a linebacker, turning around and making sure your safety gets the calls, might be sitting in the film room a little longer with the guys, who knows. It can be a handful of things, honestly.”

REDSKINS SAFETY LANDON COLLINS

Page 6: REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN - Amazon S3€¦ · On motivating the team after third straight lost: “We have to stick together and that’s all we can do. We’re in this together

On the challenges of staying focused: “It’s still the beginning of the season. We’re going to take it step-by-step, play-by-play, going with the methods.” On what those methods are to stay together: “Just staying together, honestly. We’ve just gotta build something with each other. Somebody has to do something special and then it goes from that and so on.” On the halftime changes: “Just taking it one play at a time, one step at a time, do our job to the best of our ability and try to make a play.” On Chicago’s use of crossing routes on offense: “I just think they knew what we was in and just kinda got to beat us in what we were in.” On the key of finding consistency: “Just doing our job.”

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN JONATHAN ALLEN On his frustration with losing: “Anytime you lose, it’s frustrating. It doesn’t matter if you lose by one, two, three or 300. Anytime we lose, I’m frustrated. So, like any other week, I’m going to look at the film tomorrow. I won’t have time to dwell on this. It’s Week 3, I don’t know what team has been eliminated from the playoffs after three weeks. We’re O.K., we’re O.K. Everything we do is self-inflicted. We’ve got to do the small things right and we’ll be fine. It’s not time to jump off ship and if you’re not with us now, that’s cool, keep that same energy.” On how to maintain focus during tough stretches of the season: “We’re supposed to be the best athletes in the world. If you don’t have the mental toughness to stay focused after three weeks out of a 17-week regular season, I don’t know what to tell you. So each guy has to be held accountable and just take it from there. There ain’t no magic sauce to get this thing turned around, just doing the little things right and that’s what we’ve got to do. Like I said, if you’re not going to support us now, which you shouldn’t because we’re playing like [trash]. I don’t know what you want me to tell you, so don’t support us now, don’t support us later. We’re going to circle the wagons in this [thing], we’re going to get [it] right. Believe that.” On how he felt physically: “I felt fantastic. I felt fantastic, no hiccups, no pain. I’m good.” On the defense hurting themselves with self-inflicted plays: “Yeah, I genuinely believe that. If you look at the film, we’re just not getting a pass rush, we’re letting guys run wide open, defense isn’t communicating. We’re just not doing the little things right. There’s no secret recipe to play good defense, just play hard, play physical, and communicate. We’ve got to find out where the lack in communication or physicality or effort is and we’ve got to fix it starting with myself.”

LINEBACKER JON BOSTIC On how to avoid overreacting after an 0-3 start: “We’re competitors. None of us in this locker room like to lose and I can tell you, especially on the defensive side of the ball, it’s a lot of guys that haven’t done a lot of losing. We have guys who’ve won national championships and they expect to come in – the work that they’re putting in, they want that stuff to start

Page 7: REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN - Amazon S3€¦ · On motivating the team after third straight lost: “We have to stick together and that’s all we can do. We’re in this together

carrying over into the game. Like I said, we’re seeing it in spurts, but it’s got to be the full 60 minutes. Guys are eager to get back to work, that’s the fun part about it is we have another chance to win again next week and we want to get better. We want to keep bringing the guys along, no matter who’s in that position, whose number is being called upon. Whoever’s number gets called upon, go in and make a play. Like I said, you’re supposed to set the edge, you’re supposed to be in six [technique], be in the six [technique]; you’re supposed to be in the middle of the field, deepest of the defense, you know, whatever you’re being asked to do, go in there and do exactly what you’re being asked to do. If we go in there and we do exactly what we’re asked to do, we’ll like the outcome.” On ignoring outside opinions of the team: “It matters about us in the end, that’s what it comes down to. Block all of the noise off from the outside. We’ve got to get back to playing football how we see it, I mean we see those spurts of us playing well and what not and the team feeds off of us. We’ll go out there and get turnovers and what not – you see the turnover we got today and they went on a 12-play drive, took four or five minutes off the clock. That’s big for us, it gives us a break, then we’re going out there fresh and all of a sudden, boom, another three-and-out. So, that’s what football is all about, everybody’s got to be on the same page, everybody’s got to work together, especially flipping the momentum – they were able to do that with a couple turnovers, but for us we’ve got to go out there and flip the moment right back.” On what the team can improve on: “I mean, everything. Guys got to do their job, that’s what it comes down to. Put us in great positions tonight to be able to make plays. We’ve got to make tackles the first time, you can’t miss tackles and make it up the second or third time. We’re supposed to set the edge, set the edge. We’re supposed to be inside a block, pressing from the inside. We had a good game plan going in, we just got to execute.” On how to motivate team for next week’s game: “It’s competitors all around this locker room. You’ve got guys in here who haven’t done a lot of losing, so this is kind of new to them. Guys just got to get back to work, we just brought it up, you can see guys are ready to get back tomorrow and get after it. We want to get this thing turned around and we understand there’s a sense of urgency.” On whether playing the Bears had added importance to him: “It’s nameless, faceless opponents. At the end of the day, we’re going out, we’re here to compete. Regardless of what the decal on the side of the helmet is, we’re here to compete.”

CORNERBACK JOSH NORMAN

On how tough this game was tonight: “Every game has been tough for us thus far. This one was even tougher just because I feel like back in our stadium we’ve got to get a win.” On how to get this turned around: “We’ve got to keep pushing, man, we’ve just got to keep pushing. This thing is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. It’s the first quarter of the season, right now we’re 0-3, only thing we can look for right now is the Giants. Go in there, get a win and start things off on a good foot first quarter. We’ll go 1-3 and turn it around. It’s a new quarter, second quarter coming up, but before we can look at that we’ve got to look at the Giants. Let’s just get a win, that’s all we can do.” On whether this team is together:

Page 8: REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN - Amazon S3€¦ · On motivating the team after third straight lost: “We have to stick together and that’s all we can do. We’re in this together

“Absolutely, absolutely together. Nobody is bailing out, nobody is turning and tucking tails, I’ll tell you nobody is doing that, man. We know what we have in this locker room amongst ourselves and everybody else we could care less, you know what I’m saying? At the end of the day, that’s what we pride ourselves on and right now we’re just missing things here and missing things there that we’re going to sure up, that’s for sure. We’re going to get coached up and take everything in on a positive note and come back next week. That’s all we’ve got.” On how they’re keeping the locker room together: “Obviously, we’ve just got to keep playing and our breaks will come. Our breaks will come. We have a really good group. I’m blessed to play amongst these guys. We’ll catch some breaks coming up soon hopefully. We play hard, we really do. It’s just unfortunate, sad that things happen that’s out of our control that we can’t do anything about. Only thing we can do is show up and put on our hard hats and go to work, and that’s all we have and all we can do. Just blessed that we can stay away from injuries right now, we’re nicked up a little bit, but we’ll be back for the Giants.”

Page 9: REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN - Amazon S3€¦ · On motivating the team after third straight lost: “We have to stick together and that’s all we can do. We’re in this together

BEARS HEAD COACH MATT NAGY On the game overall: “To start, within the game we ended up having a right knee injury with [DT Akiem] Hicks, hopefully he’ll be okay. Then, [WR] Taylor Gabriel is in concussion protocol. I want to give credit to [LT] Cornelius Lucas III for stepping up today on short notice with [RT] Bobby Massie’s illness and so I thought our guys did well there. It was a great game by the defense in regards to getting turnovers and flipping the field, which is really good -- I think there were five total turnovers. And the offense, their second quarter, used the momentum from that and then there at the end it was a little sloppy with the red zone, but at the end the offense being able to get four minute turnovers and first downs, that was good.” On when RT Bobby Massie’s illness came up: “Making the decision was probably within that half hour to an hour, but it was late, it was right before the deal. It was quick notice. When we got here, he came in and said he wasn’t feeling good. So it was like, okay, I guess we’ve got to figure something out. I think it was a small case of vertigo, so it’s not really that good when you have a guy that has to balance for most of the game and you’re not feeling real good with that. So we’ll see where that goes, but hopefully he’s okay.” On DT Akiem Hicks’ injury: “I don’t have anything for sure, but I feel like he’ll be okay. I don’t have anything more than that right now.” On if Hicks was dealing with an injury prior to the game: “I think, you know, he’s a pretty big dude, so his knees -- these guys, their knees can get messed up a little bit here and there and wear and tear, but it just was getting sore on him so we’ll kind of see where it’s at in the next couple days.” On deciding what K Eddy Piñeiro could handle during the game: “Yeah, it was going back and forth the last couple days, we didn’t really know. I mean, he did well warming up, so I wasn’t sure exactly what I was going to do. I had a plan either way, but [Special Teams Coordinator Chris Tabor] came in and said that he’s kicking the ball pretty well and so he felt good. That made my decision in regards to just say ‘extra points.’ Being able to kick an extra point, you feel good there and then you kind of got to test it out. It would’ve been great to hit that longer field goal, I forget the distance of it, but it would’ve been great to hit that. But again, I give him credit for fighting through that and fighting through the pain, and he did his job and hit that third field goal at the end.” On QB Mitch Trubisky seeing open receivers and easy targets: “Well, I don’t know. I mean sometimes they are easy. I mean, he’s stepping up in the pocket. There’s so many things that go into it, but, again, I want to give credit to Mitch. He had a really good week at practice. He was very mentally prepared, he’s mentally strong. He understands that throughout this process there is a lot of weight on his shoulders to do well. And I like where he is at, we’re slowly getting better. If you go back to Week One, where we were and where we are getting better now, you know there’s lots of room for improvement, but we were able to put some points on the board and get a win.” On Trubisky’s third down success:

Page 10: REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN - Amazon S3€¦ · On motivating the team after third straight lost: “We have to stick together and that’s all we can do. We’re in this together

“Yeah, what were we, seven and ten on third downs today? 70 percent. So I will take that all day long with our coaches, who put a lot of time and energy into scheming plays in that area and then the players executed.” On the play calling rhythm: “Yeah, I felt better today. It’s still not where it needs to be. I felt better, we were able to get in a rhythm. We were getting first downs and anytime you get first downs you can get that next call on the play sheet. If not, I don’t know how many three-and-outs, but there was a few there towards the end. But I thought rhythm-wise it was probably our best in the three games.” On what you can say about the defense taking the ball away: “It’s really impressive in three straight games in a row now where they are coming up. Today, turnovers, you know, and a touchdown. Anytime you have five turnovers and you only turn the ball over one time -- that’s a plus-four ratio --you’re gonna win a lot of football games that way. I don’t care what the other stats are, you’re going to win. You know, we were tested there at the end and they were tested. It was a little bit of a swing there when we didn’t get the touchdown on offense and they went down and got one. That was a little bit of a swing, but our guys hung tough and they got that fumble there on fourth down and made a crucial stop and we went down to four minutes.” On what DB Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has brought to the team: “Well, he has that veteran leadership. Ha Ha came here understanding what this culture is all about. We’re really, I believe, pretty unique with the culture that we have going on and he came in and was looking to fit in, and he did that. He’s come in, he’s worked hard every single day, he’s become a leader and you just heard him breaking down in there and talking about family. Anytime that’s the case and then you’re making plays on the field, that’s exactly why he’s here for that, and so it’s a good story.” On Piñeiro responding after a missed field goal: “That’s big, in that position it can be mental, especially when you’re not hurt very much. Kickers, unless they have something nagging them, they’re not getting banged up like these other guys are with body ailments they have to deal with every week. So when something comes up like that, you’ve got to fight through it. I give credit to [Special Teams Coordinator Chris Tabor] and Eddie for making it work and coming up with a solution.” On breaking out of the offensive slump to win three in a row: “It was nice, it felt like, ‘finally, here we go.’ It’s all about confidence. I’ll take it to a quick flip on the field and get some momentum going with those turnovers. Also, they made plays and [QB Mitchell Trubisky] made a heck of a throw down the sideline to [WR Taylor] Gabriel, who made a great catch with both feet in. I don’t know what his exact numbers were, but it felt like his completion percentage was pretty high today. I didn’t feel like there were a lot of incompletions, and when you have completions you can move to first downs, so I felt good about that. We know we have a lot of room to grow, but it was nice to have this big second quarter. We’ll be better, execute better and be better in the red zone, but I am proud.”

BEARS QUARTERBACK MITCH TRUBISKY

On getting the team in the endzone three times in the second quarter: “It was big for our offense just to get going tonight, our defense did a great job creating turnovers and getting the ball for us. I think we are just better in situational football, scoring before half is always big, we were better on third down. Executing on offense is what allowed us to go down and score.” On the first touchdown to WR Taylor Gabriel: “It was a great man beater and he had a dropping defensive end covering him. I was going to run it in, but I wanted to get him a touchdown catch.” On establishing a rhythm in the second quarter on offense: “I don’t know when it happened, but I know we established a rhythm, just felt like the tempo helped us out a little, and it was a great job of the guys getting in and out of the huddle. The offensive line did a great job creating holes in the run game and just keeping them off balance. Being better on first and second down creating manageable third down situations and converting on third down was huge for us.” On the process of building this offense: “We just have to stick to the process and keep believing in what we are doing. We had a couple weeks where we were struggling, but we were a little bit better tonight and it’s just guys sticking to the plan, coming together, and just doing what we do best. The offensive line did a great job and the playmakers made plays on the outside. We just have to stick together, execute our plays and believe and it will be a fun offense.” On how the tempo helps the team: “It helps create a rhythm, it helps the defense, it helps us see the defense, it makes the defense line up faster, they don’t know if we are checking or going right away, it kind of helps me see what they are doing, it makes them show their hand sometimes, and sometimes it doesn’t. “ On the defense scoring: “It creates momentum for the whole team. We don’t think if the defense scores, we have to go down and score again. We think, “Let’s do our job and back up the defense.’ They are doing their job. We know they are going to create turnovers and make big plays, but we still have to go out and do our job. We have to go down and score and have their backs, I think that gets them more excited to do their job, because they saw us doing our thing on offense.” On the production of the offense in the second quarter being a breakthrough: “It is hard to define, but I think we are improving as an offense. It is awesome when you have guys getting open, that is how you design it and it is why you practice it, and why you rep the plays in the game. We have the playmakers to win the man on man battle and when they are in zone, they have to see it like I see it and find the open area. I think we are still growing on offense; I don’t know if I would call it a breakthrough yet, we have to keep growing, and there is room for improvement. If we stick to the process, we will be alright.” On what he saw on the touchdown pass to Gabriel:

Page 12: REDSKINS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN - Amazon S3€¦ · On motivating the team after third straight lost: “We have to stick together and that’s all we can do. We’re in this together

“It was a great job by the offensive line giving me time and allowing me to move a little bit. We had a double moves lined up it wasn’t the perfect look that we got for it, but I think me creating time and the offensive line giving me a pocket, I just felt like I put it in a place where Taylor could get it and he did a create job getting his two feet down. It is huge to score before halftime.” On being able to move in the pocket: “It’s good, I think it takes some pressure [off] at the [offensive line], they’re just not straight rushing every time. They’re moving the pocket creating different launch points, and I think obviously that’s a strength of mine. Throwing on the run and just keeping them off balance so they can’t shoot gaps on us and make them cover the whole field side to side and keep the defense off balance.” On what worked for them on third down: “I think great studying throughout the week, and guys making plays the [offensive line] did a great job up front and guys knowing when is made and when it was zone and how to get open and just me getting the ball to playmakers but the [offensive line] did a great job of giving me time and they did a great job getting open and knowing the situation. I think those are the focus for us this week and we got to be better on third down when we stay on the field then we can be that dangerous offense we wanna be in and finish in the end zone.”

BEARS WIDE RECEIVER ALLEN ROBINSON II On the team scoring three touchdowns: “You know, I mean it’s a big boost and the fact that we scored three touchdowns and we were already up 7-0, it’s huge. So, when you factor that in, going up 28-0, that’s big for any team.” On if the defensive scoring efficiency puts pressure on the offense: “I don’t think we`ve been pressing at all you know, again, we`ve just been going out there and playing, we know our rhythm will come. We stuck to our game plan of making plays and executing. There hasn’t been too much pressure at all.”

BEARS KICKER EDDY PINEIRO On his thoughts on if his past injury concerns him: “Not really, it’s not like I pulled a muscle or anything.” On responding after his first missed field goal: “It was good and satisfying that I was able to hit the last one.” On how emotional it was to hit the game winner last week and then injure himself this week: “It was a good weak until I got hurt. It just sucks, you hit a game winner and come back the next week in a good rhythm and something like that happens. It is what it is, and you have to overcome it.”

BEARS SAFETY HA HA CLINTON-DIX On the takeaways by the defense: “We knew it came in bunches. It started off last week, we knew we had to continue fighting. When the opportunities came, we had to capitalize on it.” On his first interception: “I looked at the matchups. [WR Terry McLaurin] is a good player, No. 18, he was in the three spot. I was just following the quarterback's eyes.”

On possibility of scoring second pick: “Most definitely man, being a part of this team, we emphasize on scoring. We don’t care about catching the ball we care about scoring. That’s the mindset on defense.” On vision of first pick: “On the return I was focused on [S] Eddie Jackson because I know he has the best vision in the world. I just kinda followed his jersey number to the endzone, it happened so quick I don’t even know what happened to be honest with you. On satisfaction of first touchdown: “It felt good, I haven’t had a touchdown on defense since little league. I don’t even think I had one here, it felt good. I knew I wouldn’t get it anywhere else but at this place, so I’m excited about that. On how close he’s previously come to scoring a touchdown: “Nowhere near.” On celebration after pick-six: “It was tug a war, we had been working on it all week. I kinda went blank when it was time for us to do it. So, I kinda messed it up.” On tug a war circle: “We kinda did at first, then we pulled apart from each other and tried to make it happen.” On frustration before pick-six: “I should’ve trusted my instincts, I was in the right position I should’ve broken the ball more downhill and made that play. When I mess up on a play, I just play it over in my head and try to correct it and move forward.” On any satisfaction winning here: “Hell yeah. This is my former team and I have a lot of guys on that team that I love and have great relationships with. So, anytime you get a chance to compete against your former team it is always a little extra on the cake.” On if he ever got a pick-six in high school: “No, I did not play defense until my junior year.” On what this game means for the overall reputation of the defense: “We get in the zone now. We just finished our third game and we finally got the takeaways we were looking for. We are just going to continue to go off of that. We are going to enjoy this win tonight and move forward. We have a game in a couple of days.”

On LB Khalil Mack forcing fumbles: “When I got on we really changed the entire defense, the way we practice, the way we hunt, the way we attack the ball. It all comes from what [Mack] does in practice. We all just fall off of that and try to create turn overs.”

On what he saw on the second pick: “All [verticals]. Like I said it’s a match up issue. Once again I just look in the quarterbacks eyes and just make a play on the ball.”

BEARS LINEBACKER KHALIL MACK

On the takeaways and what got them going: “Understanding the situation – big games. Big games we like to step up to the plate.” On the strip-sack: “Same thing as last week. Saw the quarterback’s arm and I actually got to hit it this week and it came out, thankfully.” On what the takeaways means for the team: “Absolutely, that is what you want to see every week. But glad we got there.” On what changed tonight for the defense: “I can’t really say nothing was different. Just, we made the big plays and was able to capitalize.” On if the defense’s play in primetime: “The caliber of guys we have in this locker room is built for this, built for these moments. We want to go out and show the world every time we step out what the Chicago Bears football is all about.” On takeaways being contagious: “Everybody caught a little bit of that tonight, [S] Ha Ha [Clinton-Dix] especially. It is very contagious. Everybody is always thinking about the football and it is one of the things we practice throughout the week – taking it away and scoring. And we were able to get into the end zone today.”

BEARS LINEBACKER DANNY TREVATHAN On the offense’s performance: “They got it rolling today. I felt the confidence at practice start. They worked their tails off. On offense, they have to be clicking on every cylinder and they did that today. It felt good to see them out there, transition and having fun – celebrating and having each other’s back. I like to see the o-line push the running backs and all that. That stuff get’s me hyped like that. I’m sure [QB Mitchell Trubisky] was out there leading the charge and being who he is.” On the strip-sack: “Most definitely. Ha Ha [Clinton-Dix] has been in this league for awhile. He’s one of the great players. He’s fitting in our defense very well. Him and [S] Eddie [Jackson] have that chemistry already. So when he just came in, it was just like perfect fit. Let’s just got out here and roll. He’s a dog too, so he fit in with this dog pound on the backend.”

BEARS CORNERBACK PRINCE AMUKAMARA On the game: “It was a great team win. On the defensive side, we know that we wish we would have closed a little bit better but that’s what Wednesday and Tuesday is going to be for and then we will have to get ready for the Vikings.”
