Editors'LetterAs a young man living both in Canada andthe US, terms like: the Indian Movement,Indian Country, Indian Power, Red Power,Red Men and Red Skin were commonplace.Some of the first powerful images I recallwere; a poster of a beautiful native womanwith the caption 'It's better to be red thandead' and AIM (American Indian Movement]on the steps of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.AIM was the defender against a colonialsystem and Red Power was a term thatdescribed our unity and perseverance.

How do you unite a people that feel separatedand how do we convince others to follow asensible leader in an irrational world? Ourancestors taught us to follow our heartsand to refrain from using pain, suffering andanger, instead they spoke of seeking thoseout who will listen. Sometimes a good path ishard to see during a lifetime of suffering, butthat's what separates us from the dogs ofwar and illuminates us as a people of hope.

Six Nations men and women are fighting forlands in Canada while AIM is fighting for ourrights in the USA. The Seminole people havebeen able to financially regain their cultureby becoming a corporate giant, meanwhilethe Lakota nation aims to separate itselffrom America. In 1925 the traditionalleader Oeskaheh presented a speech atthe League of Nations in Geneva, he spokeabout how Natives/Indians do not mindbeing called a red skin even though our skinis not red. Taking into consideration that theskin of the African American people is notblack, the Caucasian and the Asian peopleare not white or yellow. These hues are areflection to the four colors of people onmother earth, and as a united people weshould not mind this positive reference.
