Paul Mason - CEO

What has CEO - Paul Mason and Commercial Director - Jim Termini been up to this month?

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) held its inaugural Global Aviation Security Symposium (AVSEC2017) on 12 – 14 September 2017. Hosted at the ICAO Headquarters in Montréal, Canada.

The three-day symposium served as a platform to promote the work of ICAO, its Member States and stakeholders in the area of aviation security (AVSEC).

The symposium brought together AVSEC professionals from all around the globe with an aim to advance the cultivation of a new mind-set towards aviation security, one where AVSEC is embraced as a culture far beyond a set of standards.

Furthermore, the gathering strategically enhanced international cooperation and collaboration, where we addressed the constant threat posed by terrorists, who target civil aviation by reinforcing, strengthening and promoting the international framework of aviation security standards.

Participants experienced an interactive exhibition whereby attendees showcased the latest State and industry AVSEC technology and process innovations, along with dynamic learning workshops which

stimulated panel discussions on current challenges facing aviation security.

Redline were given the opportunity to head up a debate on (take a deep breath) the practical issues of co-ordinating the implementation of AVSEC related SARPs, the GASeP and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2309 (2016) without an agreed and enforceable set of sanctions for proven non-compliance.

Various challenges were discussed, surrounding the effective application of international AVSEC requirements. It was a stimulating and thought provoking event and Redline was extremely honoured to be a part of it.

It was well planned, attended and executed. We could not have hoped for a better week. My particular thanks go to Aggie, Paul, Simon and Yumi for the smooth running of the whole event and creating the poll that we ran at short notice! Overall, it was a great opportunity for us and we will certainly be putting next year’s attendance into the diary.Jim Termini’s feedback on the Symposium

WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE INDUSTRY?

The discovered mobile phone device

BBC News reports

29 people injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated on the tube at Parsons Green, London during Friday’s morning rush hour.

The ‘bucket bomb’ attack, which took place at Parsons Green station is being treated as terrorism. Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the attack, which Theresa May, Prime Minister labelled as “cowardly”.

Several suspects have been arrested in connection with the blast, however, we’re yet to receive confirmation of the

attacker(s) and their identities.

May announced that the UK's terror threat level would remain at severe (second highest), although it would be reviewed by the Cobra emergency committee.

It was also announced that there would be an increase in armed police presence on the streets and in particular the transport networks in London.

The investigation continues.

The device was detected by x-ray screening staff on Tuesday 19 September 2017. A 26-year-old passenger was arrested and the flight due to travel to Dubai was delayed as a result. It is not yet known whether the device is inert or viable.

Our 2017 ISO Audit is in the bag! It’s August and once again the nerves start to jangle because the external ISO audit will soon be upon us. This year was slightly different because not only were we being audited, but we were attempting to gain the new standardisation ISO 9001:2015, which was a bit of a change from the old standard.

A year ago a gap analysis was conducted to establish how much work was required in order to gain this new standard. From that, a new team was formed (QA Management team). They attend a monthly meeting to discuss the changes required, our progress and the results of our own internal audits of the Quality Management System (QMS). The focus of the new standard is Communication, Leadership, Legislation and Processes. Each department was asked to produce charts to define any processes they use. The processes were then discussed at the meetings, tweaked and reviewed again, until an overall process was agreed upon. The main objective being that the processes created were easy to follow, would assist rather than hinder, and would ensure communication was key.

A new manual was created, the Business Management Systems manual with the approved processes created as Appendices. Monthly internal audits were carried out to establish any areas of improvement, and specific company policies were reviewed on a monthly basis, with any amendments being communicated to all staff.

September arrives and the audit takes place. The day consisted of the MD, QA Co-ordinator, external auditor and various QA Management team members working through the new manual, visiting different areas of the business and assessing whether the processes worked and were being followed. The audit report shows that for the 9th year in a row Redline received no majors or minors and a handful of recommendations. Not only that but we were awarded the new standard of ISO 9001:2015.

Well done to a great team effort. Here’s to the next 12 months!

A massive well done to our QA Co-ordinator - Joy Sheehan, for her work on our quality processes and procedures.Joy Sheehan - QA Co-ordinator

“I was born in South Africa and grew up in a country where life is constantly an adventure, and you never knew which critters you

were going to find in your back garden. Then one day I met this British bloke with a strong Yorkshire accent, and as they say,

things were never the same again. One marriage and one son later, and we decided to move back to the UK.

I have been here for just over 7 years now, and during that time have been lucky enough to work for some

great companies… building up an e-Learning team at Capita Customer Management, and lastly working at LEO Learning as a Project Manager implementing blended training solutions in the Defence and Security sector.

I am passionate about e-Learning and when I was approached about the opportunity at Redline, I jumped at the chance to be more hands on and make a real difference! The work we do here is fantastic and the people at Redline have a real ethos about working together as a family. No job is too big or small no matter what your title!

After hours is spent with my family, which also includes 2 dogs, one cat and a hamster. The Peak District is a favourite destination and we’ve even been known to picnic in the rain or snow. My house is also filled with various handmade craft items as I try new things like glass fusion art, furniture

re-purposing and crochet (don’t laugh).

I am looking forward to a long and happy future at Redline!”

Kelly Harrison - Aviation Security Trainer fills us in on why she’s been

eating weird stuff and doing laps around the NSTC on her lunch breaks! “I started training on my second deployment in Africa, June 2017.I’ve been wanting to do a competition for the last 9 years but never had the confidence to do so until now. My

colleagues have been very supportive; helping me on our travels, moving weights from the car to hotel rooms

and putting up with my bizarre meal requests like tomato and mozzarella salad without the tomato! Or mixed

grill with just steak and a chicken breast... Preparation has been key. I take a one pot cooker with me to hotels so I can prep my food for the following day

and train in my hotel room. It’s hard work but goes to show that anything is possible! The competition is the UK Ultimate Physiques – British Championship Qualifier in York on October 14th. I’m

entering 2 categories – Fitness Model and Ultimate Bikini. This is my first competition and my husband Mark is

also competing.”

Good luck Kelly, from all of the team at Redline. We look forward to an update from you

in next month’s issue!

If you are a recruitment company who deals with personnel for Air Cargo and/or In-Flight Supplies clients, we can save you both time and money on your candidates mandated aviation security training.

Unlike some training providers, we are experienced in the training of agency staff as we have extensive experience in live operations, and are not just a training provider.

In addition to our very competitive and cost-effective training packages, we offer full support from training your own staff in aviation background referencing (which is a specialist area within the aviation sector), training of your candidates, right through to On the Job Training, and on-going mentoring. We understand the pitfalls that face companies who provide agency workers to the aviation security sector.

If you would like to know more or to discuss how we can help you, contact us on the number above.
