Welcome to 2020 at Redland Art Gallery (RAG). This year brings another vibrant program of exhibitions, workshops and events to our Cleveland and Capalaba galleries.

There is an exciting line-up of solo, group and national touring exhibitions including Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Cra \ Prue Venables and JamFactory Icon: Clare Belfrage: A Measure of Time.

The unique Redlands Coast continues to inspire artists working across diverse mediums. Artists also reect on the 250th anniversary of British explorer James Cook and his voyage to Australia. Other artists contemplate the environments they encounter, identity and culture of place.

Our anticipated biennial national contemporary painting prize Redland Art Awards returns and the RAG Red Box Pop-Up Gallery is open to artists who wish to exhibit during the year. Works from the growing RAG Collection are also a highlight and can now be viewed at any time on our website. Our popular families’ and children’s programs have more places available.

There are too many fantastic exhibitions and partnerships to list here so please read on for more details and to nd out about booking into a workshop or stopping in at one of our free, regular monthly events.

Thank you for your ongoing support and we look forward to seeing you at RAG throughout the year.

Beneath the SurfaceChrys Zantis

15 Jan – 17 MarCA

Floor Talk and Light Lunch 12noon Thursday 23 January

Capalaba

Beneath the Surface visually represents the unseen, inner workings of the body, while referencing the complimentary and compelling relationship between visual art and medical science. Chrys Zantis’ heat manipulated fabric pieces ‘hold the memory’ of objects used to shape the medium and leave pockets of air in their wake. Also poetically referencing the ephemeral brain-body connection and representing the breath as central to mindfulness. Circular frames recall scientic apparatus like the microscope, magnifying glass and petri dish, while textiles form artistic representation of body tissues for visitors to explore.

Acclaimed ceramicist Prue Venables is the ninth artist in the Australian Design Centre series Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Cra, which celebrates the achievements of Australia’s most iconic cra¨s practitioners. The works of Prue Venables show a true mastery of materials. They demonstrate a profound understanding of porcelain, the most precious and temperamental of clays, whose ne-grain and opaque qualities are expressed in rigorous works of rened detail. These are handmade functional artworks that possess clarity, luminosity and a quiet beauty.

Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Cra \ Prue Venables is an Australian Design Centre (ADC On Tour) national touring exhibition, presented with assistance from the Australian Government Visions of Australia program.

Drawing on the diversity of the RAG Collection this exhibition explores the concept of the ‘family home’ as a space that universally holds memories and emotions related to the experience of family and the notion of ‘place’. It also demonstrates how the RAG Collection across a variety of artists and mediums can be utilised to share a diverse range of stories. Visitors are encouraged to add to The Family Home by contributing their stories in the exhibition space. Curated by Lizzie Riek.

Response is an exhibition by Carol McGregor, an artist of Wathaurung and Scottish descent, reecting on the 250th anniversary of British explorer James Cook and his voyage to Australia. McGregor’s research into Response involved discussion and consultation with Quandamooka and south-east Queensland Aboriginal communities. This sits alongside her own personal reections on what was here, looked a¨er and used as a resource before colonisation. The exhibition will be anchored by a possum skin cloak and include a series of sculptural works and works on paper.

Fragments: A Printed Environment is an archive of Tamika Grant-Iramu’s experiences and impressions of multiple environments that she has encountered. By investigating the shapes and movements that are created by the contrast between structure and nature, Grant-Iramu uses printmaking as a tool for reimagining that environment, responding to natural forms that exist within diverse urban and suburban contexts. Grant-Iramu’s work brings into focus aspects of the natural environment that o¨en go unnoticed and yet are an important part of the identity and culture of place. Tamika Grant-Iramu is represented by Onespace Gallery.

Canaipa Mudlines began in 2016 with a small collective of Southern Moreton Bay Island artists seeking ways of connecting their creative practices with the island ecology. Based on Canaipa (Russell) Island, the project has developed as both established and emerging artists from the island and beyond make regular site excursions to create mostly ephemeral works in response to the places and qualities they encounter. Working in this way has contributed to both surprising developments in their individual practices and highlighting the o¨en overlooked richness of the island environment.
