A magnificent concert will be held in the Sanctuary so that all may hear the beautiful sounds of our new Organ.
Special guest organist Bob Tall will be presenting a special musical piece entitled: “I am An American” which pulls out all the stops on the organ and is accompanied
by an inspirational video.
The concert will include a brass ensemble from UC Fullerton under the direction of Todd Miller, special choir anthems, congregational singing, instrumental pieces,
and a formal dedication of the organ.
Dear Friends:
As we approach the end of the year, there are several items that will be coming up at the congregational meeting in December.
The three year term call to Lynne Prechel as half-time Associate in Ministry expires at the end of December. It is the recommendation of the church council to extend her call through August of 2016. The plan would be to reduce staff at that time and participate in an intern program.
Why the change?
First and foremost, the projections for church membership and support for our congregation and most Christian congregations is for a decline. Young people are not joining churches as they once did. The need for the church into the future is to depend less on paid staff and more on lay volunteers. The ELCA needs good sites to train future pastors. Our Redeemer is a healthy congregation, we have a balanced ministry with many opportunities for learning. I have mentored several interns in my ministry here and elsewhere and have had positive experiences. Our congregation’s past experiences with interns has been very positive.
Interns provide a short-term commitment. Should finances change, we can discontinue the program from year to year.
Interns are full-time and low cost. The congregation is responsible for providing housing and a $1000 a month stipend. The total cost for a full-time intern is less than a part-time staff position, but the amount depends on housing costs. Interns provide a more youthful presence to help the congregation better relate to younger families.
The down side is they lack experience, they are short term, and they are not in a position to lead ministries, but only support and learn. We have had a positive ministry with Lynne, off and on, over the last 8 years. An intern would not provide continuity and leadership with ministries that Lynne has provided.
The congregation needs to approve any called position, and the recommendation from church council will be to extend Lynne Prechel’s call by 8 months through August, 2016.
A second issue to come before the congregation will be a motion to repave the church parking lot. The proposed cost for a major overhaul and long term fix of our parking lots is approximately $70,000. We should have $80,000 in our building fund by the end of this year. A possible way to keep from draining our building fund too much would be to have a campaign to raise a portion of the total needed. But we will have a motion to fix the parking lot at the December meeting.
Another issue that has just arisen concerns the SHIP house. American Family Housing, the organization that oversees the SHIP program has contacted the church about buying the SHIP house. Jim Huffman who runs the SHIP program and meets with the AFH board suggested we meet with AFH officials to listen to their offer. We have not yet had an initial meeting, but it is an issue being discussed. Before anything would be done concerning the house, many questions would have to be answered, and the congregation would need to approve a possible sale. I anticipate that there would be a report at the December congregational meeting, but I do not anticipate any action to be considered by that time. Would the SHIP program continue, would Howard have to leave and be relocated, would Will stay on as a supervisor, would there be an offer at full market price, would there be guarantees that the SHIP program would continue? These and other questions still need to be addressed. As more information becomes available, we will try to keep the congregation aware. These are some big issues to be discussed at this year’s congregational meeting in December. Please keep the congregation and these issues in your prayers, that the decisions we make will best serve the kingdom of God.
In Christ,

As we enter the month of November, our thoughts turn to the celebration of Thanksgiving Day that occurs near month’s end. We have so much to be thankful and grateful for! I am sure your list of gratitudes is as long or longer than my own, and so that we can add to our lists, I share with you below some beautiful gratitude quotes by some famous and not-so-famous authors. If you’re interested in pursuing the discipline of gratitude, especially in this particular month, then visit this website: www.gratefulness, hosted by Brother David Stiendl-Rast. But for now, enjoy these with my blessing.
1. “At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.” — Albert Schweitzer 2. “You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law: the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you.” — Sarah Ban Breathnach
3. “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” — Albert Einstein
4. “Can you see the holiness in those things you take for granted–a paved road or a washing machine? If you concentrate on finding what is good in every situation, you will discover that your life will suddenly be filled with gratitude, a feeling that nurtures the soul.” — Rabbi Harold Kushner
5. “If the only prayer you say in your life is thank you, that would suffice.” — Meister Eckhart
6. “Whatever our individual troubles and challenges may be, it’s important to pause every now and then to appreciate all that we have, on every level. We need to literally “count our blessings,” give thanks for them, allow ourselves to enjoy them, and relish the experience of prosperity we already have.” — Shakti Gawain 7. “Gratefulness is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not be happy — because we will always want to have something else or something more.” — Brother David Steindl-Rast
As I read through these quotes, I am made mindful of the variety of things that I take for granted, like fresh fruits and vegetables available year round, a peaceful community in which to live, religious freedom to worship as God and my heart guide me, quality college educations for my children, and excellent medical care. Medical care is on my mind currently, as I’m in the process of scheduling reconstructive cervical spine surgery at the end of this year, and I’m so grateful for the high level of knowledge, experience, and care that I’ll receive from the orthopedic surgeon and hospital (Hoag) that we’ve chosen. As I write these words, I know that your prayers will be with me, surrounding me with concern, and for that I am enormously grateful. Your friendship and love are great gifts for which I thank God with all my heart.
With love and deep gratitude for all of you, Lynne

GREETINGS FROM PRESCHOOL
Wow! What fun we had in October. Starng the month, we got to play with shapes and enjoyed painng, stamping and prinng… then the Fire Department came to the rescue. Garden Grove, Staon 2 came to visit with a “show and tell” as we learned first hand about Fire Fighters, playing with matches, Stop, Drop and Roll and to see their Big Fire Engine.... it was very excing. OCFA Fire Fighters from Staon 61 in Buena Park invited our big kids to see behind the scenes and where they live and work… they were
wonderful to all our children. We got to see a fire fighter dress up in their turn-outs, and check out their Fire Truck too (It’s REALLY BIG)! They were very busy… we got to see them jump into their turnouts and leave with their lights and sirens. We were closed on Thursday, October 15th so that the teachers could a:end a very interesng conference on those Ah-ha moments in a child’s life...Then we had lots of fun ge;ng ready for Halloween. We made or own Pumpkin Patch this year, and the children got to pick out the one they wanted, it was lots of fun. We learned about bats and caves and had lots of fun with some pumpkin science and spiders too. Then we got to dress up in costume and go ‘Trick or Treang’ at school.
Coming up in November we will be doing lots of excing things too! We will be learning about Fall and
ge;ng ready for Thanksgiving as we enjoy a fun lesson about the Nave American Indians and Pilgrims as
well as being thankful for the special people in our lives. The children will be making many beauful
cra?s; learning about the season of change… we so love all the colors it brings, re-create a real (fun)
Nave American Indian Pow-Wow as well as Celebrang our 4th Annual Grandparents/Loved Ones Day.
The children will be inving someone special in their life to come to school with them on Monday, Nov
23rd. We will have a special me in Church with Pastor Brian and they will sing for that special
someone; a recepon will follow.
The school will be closed Wednesday, November 11 for Veteran’s Day as well as November 25—27 for the
Thanksgiving Holiday. .. It will be Christmas before you know it!
Come by and Say Hi when you can, Sue
