The dugOuTPhil Ruggles First Team Manager

Hello and welcome to Redding Way for our sixth game of the league campaign. This week we host second placed Staines Lammas in what should be a closely fought contest between the two sides.

Last Saturday saw us entertain local rivals Sheerwater FC and in front of the biggest crowd in both Combined Counties divisions and saw our side come out on top winning 4-1.

Our goals came through Craig Pendergast, Dan Thorogood (man of match), a debut goal for Rob Jones and Josh Watkins. In all fairness we could have had double the amount of goals but for Sheerwater’s keeper making some good saves and some wayward finishing from ourselves. However our build up play was to be admired for many periods of the match and saw some very good performances. Captain Jamie Doble lead the troops well, the midfield all worked really hard and our forward line was really well organised.

As I mentioned previously today we entertain Staines Lammas who come here with their confidence high and who have also started very well in their campaign.

Staines have built up their squad during the summer and as in previous seasons I feel will be up there come the end of the campaign. Today shall be a good test to see how far we have come as a squad and management team in such a short space of time.

We hope you enjoy the game

This fixture provides this top of the table encounter in Division One between the two Clubs so early in the new season, as we complete the first month of matches in the 2013/14 League programme. For Knaphill, August has seen a tremendous start to this season catapulted by the first win away at Farleigh Rovers, and followed by successive wins against, Dorking, South Kilburn, CB Hounslow and last weekend Sheerwater, becoming League leaders following rewarding performances from players in the five matches.

Our visitors today are five points behind Knaphill in second place with a game in hand, and unbeaten in their first four league games with three wins and a draw. They did taste defeat a couple of weeks ago losing 2-0 at home to Badshot Lea in an FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round. Ironically Knaphill will also be playing Badshot Lea, when next Friday 6th September we play them in the 1st Qualifying round of the FA Vase, a match that was scheduled to be played on the Saturday, but Ash United are also at home on that day, so Badshot Lea, who Ground share with Ash, have to play the tie on the Friday night. Kick off for that match will be 7.30pm.

Last weekend was the local derby game between Knaphill and Sheerwater and our first ever Community Day on an afternoon when the rain also took part for most of the game but didn’t dampen the spirit or the football played.

The onlooking crowd of 105, Knaphill’s biggest attendance so far this season, included Woking MP Jonathan Lord, and local Councillors Saj Hussein and Melanie Whitehand who, along with the crowd, enjoyed the fun food and football. The club would like to thank Surrey Roads Police, Freedom Leisure, FA Tesco Football Skills and Indo Restaurants for taking part on the day and braving the weather with us.

The home side showed the way with some dominating periods during the game which brought a two goal lead in the first half with strikes from Craig Prendergast and Dan Thorogood. After the first ten minutes of the second half, Sheerwater reduced the early arrears with a dubious penalty awarded. But that was their only net gain of the match as Knaphill continued to pressure the visitors and were rewarded with further goals from substitute Rob Jones on his debut, and Josh Watkins for a final 4-1 scoreline. Match report of the game can be found elsewhere in the Programme.

Knaphill Reserves have had a tough baptism to the start of their first season in the Suburban League. Following the 3-1 home defeat by North Greenford United in the opening match two weeks ago, they played Tooting & Mitcham last Saturday resulting in a 5-0 defeat for Dave Kelly’s team. Early days yet, but although playing some stronger opposition this season, they will also be meeting up with a few teams that were in the Combined Counties Reserves Division last season, and be picking up some points. Today the Reserves visit local rivals Westfield.

Our Youth team kicked off their Southern Youth League season on Tuesday night at home to Farnham Town, update on that fixture in the Programme’s Youth column, and next Tuesday will be back at Redding Way when they entertain Westfield kick off 7.30pm.

After today’s game against Staines Lammas, Knaphill have three successive away fixtures starting with next Friday 6th September at Ash United’s Ground where we face Badshot Lea in the FA Vase kick off 7.30pm(If replay needed, it will be here on Tuesday 10th September 7.30pm). In the League Knaphill visit Worcester Park on Saturday 14th September, and Spelthorne Sports the following week, Saturday 21st September, then back home on 28th September against AFC Croydon Athletic.

Enjoy today’s game………

Combined Counties League Division 1, Saturday 24th August Knaphill 4 - 1 Sheerwater

RePORTing backThis local derby turned out to be a comfortable win for Knaphill over their local rivals which saw the home side dominate periods of the game with a result that produced their fifth consecutive win in Division One this season. Strolling to a 2-0 halftime lead, Knaphill doubled the score in the second half while Sheerwater’s consolation goal came from a penalty.

Knaphill showed their intent as early as the seventh minute when Jamie Doble planted a header goalbound, only for a defender to make a hasty clearance at the near post to deny the Knaphill skipper his second goal in successive weeks. A minute later Josh Watkins delivered a shot just inside the18 yard box that flew wide of the far post. As the half progressed, Knaphill showed plenty of pressure and were stroking the ball around with precision. On 11 minutes a long driven effort from Alex Lumley reared up and over the bar, and three minutes later Craig Prendergast weaved into the six yard box to steer the ball across the face of goal, but no one was able to make contact on the ball. Sheerwater made a rare attack after fifteen minutes, but with no end result.

In the 20th minute, Knaphill forged into the lead when Josh Watkins provided the pass, and Craig Prendergast produced the precise finish from six yards and into the corner of goal. The dominance from the home side was to be enhanced after 28 minutes. Ben Acton strode into

the box, delivered a fine cross, found Dan Thorogood who worked the ball in towards the near post and with a neat flick found the net between post and keeper, 2-0. Despite creating more chances in the last fifteen minutes of the first half from Prendergast’s effort forcing a defender to head over, then the same player shot just wide, before Matt Edwards was unlucky in the 39th minute to see his header come back off the post.

Sheerwater, who hadn’t really threatened too much in the first forty five minutes, were given hope of getting back in the game, but only through a dubious looking penalty decision after 55 minutes. Skipper Joel Saunderson delivered the spot kick. Lee Allen thwarted the visitors when a couple of efforts were well saved by the Knaphill keeper. But the home side resumed their driving force in the 66th minute when a swift break saw substitute Rob Jones find space, and with a perfect strike, slotted home Knaphill’s third.

The game was well and truly wrapped up for Knaphill after 82 minutes as Josh Watkins raced towards goal to drive the ball past Witney into the far corner to make it 4-1. Three more points, a maximum tally from their five games played, keeping Knaphill top of the League. They now look ahead to their next match, with the top of table clash against Staines Lammas at Redding Way today.

Knaphill: Allen, Acton, Taylor, Lumley, Doble, Messenger, Edwards, Thorogood(Pitcher 80mins), Prendergast(Jones 56mins), Watkins, Powell(Davis 80mins).

Goals: Prendergast 20mins, Thorogood 28mins, Jones 66mins, Watkins 82mins

Booked: Lumley, Acton, Powell.

Man of the Match Dan Thorogood receives his award from Vice Chairman Mick Garbutt.

Staines Lammas Football Club was founded in 1926 and took its name from the park land adjacent to the River Thames in Staines, Middlesex which is now known as Staines-on –Thames.

The Club played in various Leagues under the jurisdiction of the Middlesex County Football Association at the Lammas until the mid-1980’s when the Club moved to its current home at The Laleham Recreation Ground, Laleham. At this time the Club changed its affiliation from the Hounslow and District League to the Woking League under the jurisdiction of the Surrey County Football Association. The Club remains affiliated to both Counties.

In the period since its move to Laleham the Club has made steady progress through the football league pyramid, gaining promotion to the Surrey County Intermediate League (Western). The Club progressed through the divisions and won the Middlesex Intermediate Cup in season 2000-01 and the Division One title in season 2001-02 (there was no Premier Division at the time).

At the end of the 2000-01 season the Club completed the development of its new Sports Pavilion and changing room facilities with the financial support of local businesses and significant grants from the Football association and Sport England. It was a notable success at the time and represented the first such grant awarded by Sport England in the Borough of Spelthorne. As a result of its success both on and off the field the Club was promoted to the Surrey Senior League.

In season 2003-04 the Surrey Senior League was amalgamated into the Combined Counties Football League with the Clubs forming Division One and the existing clubs the Premier Division of the Competition. The Club settled into mid-table security and at the start of the 2006-07 appointed Nathan Wharf as its manager (who previously the manager of Ashford Town (Middx.) Football Club) and success soon followed.

The Club that season shared the Southern Combination Cup with Merstham Football Club when a date for the Final could not be agreed. In the following season 2007-08 the Club were champions of Division One and retained the title in the following season 2007-08 also winning the Division One League Cup that year.

The Club unfortunately was unable to gain promotion to the Premier Division as it could not meet the necessary ground grading requirements and having been refused planning permission to install floodlights at Laleham, the Club decided to enter into a ground sharing agreement with Ashford Town (Middx.) Football Club for the 2009-10 season where it remains.

In season 2011-12 the Club achieved more silverware when it won both the Middlesex and Surrey County Football Associations Saturday Premier Cups a remarkable and unique feat in modern times.

The Club has a healthy Youth Section comprising some thirteen teams and has recently formed links with Colne Valley Ladies Football Club who play their home fixtures at Laleham.

Knaphill FC would like to extend a warm welcome to Staines Lammas, their Management and Fans - Welcome to Redding Way.

in reServeGood Afternoon Everyone,

Last Saturday the Reserves travelled to Tooting & Mitcham FC. After North Greenford the whole squad had worked hard in training on the Tuesday and Thursday at Bisley. As a club we need to be realistic in what we think we can achieve in the Surburban League. Quite simply some teams we face we will struggle to compete with but the teams who came up to this league with us we must take points from.

The starting X1 for Tooting was:- Smyrk, Kwenda, Sales, Udaw, Dennison, Herbert, Giles, Coates, Murray, Pearson, Postance. Subs:- Clark, Mason, Ruggles. Our preparation was hampered on the morning of the game as Dawber pulled out sick and Davis was called into the 1st Team Squad. So Dennison & Ruggles were called in to replace them.

Again as last week we started brightly and had the better of the opening 20min exchanges. This time the players took on board that we played in the oppositions half. Kwenda was caught too far forward and space opened up on the left, a low cross in and Herbert wasn’t tight enough and a low drive beat Smyrk at the near post. Tooting now changed up a couple of gears. Suddenly their movement, power and pace were causing us problems all over the pitch. One thing our two wide strikers must learn is without the ball they must drop in quickly to make a five in midfield.

The three of Herbert, Giles and Coates were working tirelessly, Sales and Dennison at the back the same and Pearson up front. Unfortunately six out of eleven is not enough at this level and Tooting were now showing their quality. We came in at half time 3 nil down. After some positive words in the dressing room we set out not to concede again in the second half.

This was nearly achieved as Tooting did not add to their tally until the 80th and 85th minute. This is not to say we parked the bus in front of Smyrk’s goal, far from it. Pearson, Coates, Murray and Postance all found space in the box but couldn’t finish. Udau, Kwenda, Postance and Murray all had better 2nd halves.

Clark came on for Murray on 75mins and Ruggles for Giles on 80mins.

I thought North Greenford were good and stated in last weeks programme notes that we wouldn’t have a tougher game all season, well I was wrong and we did!! I think its quite clear to the management and squad that at times we will be playing better sides than our 1st Team.

Today we travel to local rivals Westfield and look to secure our first win of the season.

Good luck to Ruggs and the 1st Team against Stainnes Lammas today, extend the run of wins and get another 3 points.

All the best

The 2013/14 Southern Youth League season started on Tuesday night with the visit of last season’s Divisional Runners-up, Farnham Town.

This was going to be a tough challenge for Gary Taylor’s young side. The pre-season form of the youth team had been built around a core of players who ended the season with Knaphill.

Due to their performances in the opening pre-season games, some larger clubs came calling and the heart was ripped out of the team as the lure of potentially playing at a high level was too much to resist. This left Gary a very short time to bring together a new squad. In fact 5 players were signed on the night itself, 4 came from Met. Police as a goodwill gesture after a number of Knaphill players joined them pre-season.

The excitement of a new season was quickly tempered with a goal for Farnham after just 58 seconds came from a long throw that every-one in the box managed to miss, apart from the Farnham player on the back post who calmly slotted the ball home.

After 18 minutes the second goal for Farnham arrived with a through ball that evaded the Knaphill defence and left debutant goalkeeper Fraser McCambridge-Heal completely exposed. Just after the half hour a third goal saw another through ball, the keeper rounded and the ball placed into an empty net. There were a number of downcast faces on the Knaphill side as they left

the pitch at half time.

Two substitutions saw George Elson and James Clemens spark Knaphill into life. A much improved Knaphill came out as the players started to adjust to the new colleagues and individual performances improved from the first half. Robert Litchfield led from the back as Captain and his performance encouraged the other back line players. However Farnham were not finished and two more goals in the 57th (a penalty) and the 69th minutes saw a comfortable 5-0 win for the visitors.

The boys should take heart as many of the watching spectators (a crowd of 42 were present) and the Farnham management were very complimentary about the style of Knaphill’s play. There is along way still to go, a few of the older boys (the average age on the night was 16) are still to become available. The next outing for Gary’s young gun’s comes next Tuesday (3rd September KO 7.30pm) as local rivals Westfield arrive for the first competitive derby at U18 level.
