The World Health Organization releases global report on Antimicrobial Resistance

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently released its global report on antibiotic resistance (ABR) sur-veillance and the outlook isn’t particularly positive. Addressing ABR in food-producing animals and the food chain, WHO stated that “Major gaps exist in surveillance and data sharing related to the emergence of ABR in foodborne bacteria and its potential impact on both animal and human health” and that “surveillance of ABR generally is neither coordinated nor harmonized, compromising the ability to assess and monitor the situation.”

The report points out that because the classes of antibiotics used in food-producing animals and in human drugs “are mostly the same”, there’s an increased risk of emergence and spread of the resistant bacteria. Fur-thermore, another significant issue is the ability for bacteria to carry different resistance mechanisms which are then transferred to humans which could potentially give rise to infections not recognized as foodborne. WHO cites urinary tract infections caused by E. coli that could have been initially foodborne and mentions concerns about Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections related to high-density swine production.

One of the prevailing issues preventing a coordinated approach to ABR surveillance is that only a limited num-ber of countries currently have surveillance programs for food animals and the differences in production sys-tems, sampling methodology, sites and procedures, laboratory protocols and country-specific bacteria makes for a difficult comparative environment, if not impossible.

Dr. Gail Hansen, a senior officer for Pew’s campaign on human health and industrial farming, stated that “The WHO report really demonstrates that antibiotic resistance is a threat that doesn’t have borders. Anything that happens in one part of the globe is going to affect the entire globe at some point.”

FSA launches priority testing programme across the UK to combat lamb meat substitution

The Food Standards Agency recently launched an additional programme of priority testing of all lamb dishes from takeaway restaurants across the UK after local authority sampling data revealed that 43 out of 145 samples of lamb takeaway meals contained meat other than lamb. In total, 25 of these samples were found to contain only beef. Other meat species identified included chicken and turkey.

Andrew Rhodes, Chief Operating Officer at the FSA, stated that “Substitution of lamb for cheaper meats in takeaway food, as seen in our own data and the survey released today

by Which?, is unacceptable and we are working closely with local authorities to ensure robust action is taken against any businesses misleading their customers.”

Sampling will start at the beginning of May and local authorities will be focusing the efforts of enforcement officers in testing some 300 samples from takeaway restaurants who are to report their findings back to the FSA. Food businesses need to be aware that intentional acts of meat substitution and mislabelling can see them being prosecuted and facing fines of up to £5,000 for defrauding consumers.
