YOUR 2010-11DETROIT RED WINGSTEAM HISTORY

RED WINGS TODAY 5

HISTORY BEHIND THE NAMEDetroit joined the NHL for the 1926-27 season and was known as the Cougars. After an unsuccessful four years of play, coach Jack Adams thought a name change might help spur a win-ning season. The name was changed to the Falcons beginning with the 1930-31 season. When James Norris, Sr. purchased the hockey franchise in 1932, he changed the name a third time to the Red Wings. Red was a part of the name because the existing uniforms were red and white.

TEAM COLORSLittle is known about why red and white were chosen for the team’s colors back in 1926. However, red is an emotionally charged color, demonstrating passion, strength, energy, fi re and excitement. And initially, the sport of ice hockey, with roots dat-ing back to the mid-1880s, was played outdoors surrounded by snow, thus the color white. The colors of red and white do in-deed seem fi tting for an energetic hockey team that provides so much excitement to its fans.

THE LOGOAfter James Norris, Sr. changed the name from the Falcons to the Red Wings, he searched for a new logo. He was reminded of the logo worn by the Montreal Winged Wheelers – an ama-teur hockey team he had played for years before as member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. That logo’s wheeled center seemed quite appropriate for Detroit, a city that had put the world on wheels, and the wing would denote speed as the players soared around the rink in smooth fl ight.

EVOLUTION OF THE LOGOThe original Red Wings logo was rather crude, but it has been refi ned over the years. When Mike and Marian Ilitch purchased the team in 1982, they enlarged the logo on the game jerseys to demonstrate the pride they felt for the hockey team and the franchise’s long and rich history.

T he Red Wings made headlines this summer when they brought Mike Modano to Hockeytown. Yet

lost in the news of Modano’s return to his hometown was the addition of a defenseman who is making just as much of an impact on the Wings’ roster.

Veteran defenseman Ruslan Salei was signed in August to provide a steadying presence on the Wings’ blue line. The 36-year-old said that his job is not to score goals, but to protect Jimmy Howard and the Wings’ goal.

“I just try to do my role,” Salei said. “Penalty kill, even strength; I try to be physical, as physical as I can, and just try to fit in.”

For Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom, fitting

in on this team has not been a problem for Salei, a 14-year NHL veteran.

“I think he’s been a good fit,” Lidstrom said. “He’s a very steady defenseman. He very seldom makes any mistakes. He’s going to be that strong player in our own zone that we wanted him to be and that we knew he was going to be for us, that we had seen with other teams.

“He’s just a tough guy to beat one-on-one. A very strong guy in the corners, and on the penalty kill. He just makes our defense so much more solid when we have a guy like that.”

Lidstrom said that where Salei has made his impact most known is on the Wings’ penalty kill, which through November ranked among the NHL’s best.

“He’s good at reading plays, knowing where the puck’s going to be and being aggressive at the right moments,” Lidstrom said. “That’s something you want to do on the PK, be aggressive at the right time.”

Salei has been on long hockey journey. The native of Minsk, Belarus made his North American hockey debut with the Las Vegas Thunder of the defunct International Hockey League. He posted seven goals and 23 assists that season, along with 123 penalty minutes, which caught the attention of NHL scouts. Anaheim selected him with the ninth overall pick in the 1996 NHL draft.

In the 1996-97 season, Salei split time between Las Vegas and the American Hockey League’s Baltimore Bandits. He also appeared in 30 games for the Ducks, recording an assist and 37 penalty minutes. The next season,

Salei made his mark with the Ducks, playing in 66 games, and compiling 15 points and 70 penalty minutes.

Salei, 36, spent nine seasons with the Ducks, including three with coach Mike Babcock at the helm. The veteran defenseman said he has enjoyed being reunited with his former coach in Hockeytown.

“It’s nice, it’s nice to have the understanding from the coaches and from your point of view,” Salei said. “It’s always nice when you have good player-coach relationships.”

Following his stay in Anaheim, Salei played parts of two seasons with the Florida Panthers, before being traded to Colorado. Unfortunately, a back injury last season forced Salei to only appear in 14 games with the Avalanche.

After experiencing three different NHL clubs,

before signing with the Wings, Salei has been impressed with how his new team operates.

“It’s great,” Salei said about the Red Wings. “It’s a great experience, a great bunch of guys. It’s an amazing first-class organization. Everything overall is perfect. It’s good.”

Much of Salei’s playing time, at least early this season, has been spent with the younger defensemen, like Jonathan Ericsson and Jakub Kindl. The veteran defenseman said that he plans on helping the young blue-liners any way he can.

“If they need the help, you can always help them if they ask for it,” Salei said. “The whole environment over here is so positive, so winning-oriented. They just build through that and they learn from that, so it’s a really good environment for kids to grow-up in.”

Despite playing in almost 900 NHL games,

Salei said that it’s been a learning experience for him as well, playing with the likes of Lidstrom and the rest of the Wings’ defense.

“Lidstrom or any other guys, it’s an amazing experience for me,” Salei said. “I’m trying to learn every day from guys like that, and it’s a really interesting process.”

However, there has been a downside for Salei in signing with the Wings. Salei’s wife, Bethann, and their two children, Alexis and Aleksandro, still live in southern California. The Wings’ defenseman said while it has been rough to be away from his family, it has been a manageable situation. He also looks forward to the road trips out west, when he gets a chance to go home.

“It’s fine,” he said. “I mean, it’s a decision we made, and we live with that. It’s all good. We’re pretty happy, and I’m happy that I’m here.”

GREAT EXPERIENCE: While Salei enjoys the opportunity to play along side his Wings defensive mates, he looks forward to the west coast road trips when he has the chance to see his family.

The Detroit Red Wings commemorated Veterans Day this year by hosting 50 military veterans and active members on leave along with their guests at the Wings’ morning skate on November 11. The Wings held their annual Military Appreciation Night later that day, recognizing the hundreds of military members in the stands.

Fans brought over 1,500 care package items for soldiers currently serving overseas and donated nearly $2,300 to cover the cost of shipping these care packages to soldiers in the Middle East. The items were then packaged together by volunteers from Blue Star Mothers of America and care packages were sent to nearly 200 soldiers overseas.

Volunteers also distributed approximately 5,000 prepaid envelopes to Wings’ fans in attendance as part of the Cell Phones for Soldiers program, which encourages people to send in their previously used cell phones. The donated cell phones are then recycled and the proceeds are used to purchase prepaid calling cards for American service personnel.

Ask any hockey player and they’ll tell you, to perform at your best, you need the right gear. For U.S. travelers crossing the border into Canada to catch a game, be sure to pack a high-tech travel card for the trip home. The cards make crossing the U.S. border, by land or sea, more effi cient. But that’s not all. Cardholders enjoy reduced wait times and dedicated lanes at many border crossings. You could say it’s a hat trick of travel perks.

Let’s Get You Home.

Do you keep in touch with any of your former Red Wings teammates? If so, who?

Yeah, actually quite a few, like Kris Draper. I mean, you bump into guys, like Drapes, Steve Yzerman, Marty Lapointe. I mean, probably like a dozen of them.

Which of the current Red Wings is your favorite? And why?

Thomas Holmstrom, but every guy I played with. It’s tough to pick. Homer made me laugh, Nick’s a favorite, Drapes, Pav, Hank, I don’t think I can pick one.

What was your favorite memory as a Red Wing? Probably winning our fi rst Stanley Cup in 1997, here

on home ice, sweeping Philadelphia. All the Stanley Cups were great, but when you win your fi rst one, for almost all of us on the team, it was our fi rst one.

Which of the guys you played with was the toughest?

You know, Vladimir Konstantinov, the one year I got to play with him I was amazed at how tough he was. Darren McCarty was obviously very tough. But then there were guys like Nicklas Lidstrom, who didn’t necessarily play physically, but was extremely tough in that he just never missed a game, would not ever get hurt. Steve Yzerman was incredibly tough in how he could play with pain. So, you know, our players showed toughness in whatever form they could bring it.

Who was the funniest?Tomas Holmstrom was probably my favorite guy, as

far as, you know, if I could understand what he was saying I usually laughed.

Who had the biggest heart? Some guys display their heart in a really obvious way

for everyone to see, but other guys are more subtle but their heart’s just as big, so again, I don’t think I could pick just one guy.

What was your favorite restaurant in metro Detroit?

I used to like to go to the Townsend Hotel; get a big steak after games.

How has the NHL changed since you played? It’s gotten a lot younger. Who did you sit next to in the dressing room? Kirk Maltby and Sergei Fedorov.

ALUMNIREUNIONA Q&A WITH

BRENDANSHANAHAN

By Michelle Crechioloand Bill Roose

What do you love most about the game? I just love the intensity and the competition and the

passion that you see each and every night, each and every playoff series.

Who had the greatest infl uence on your career?Probably my brothers. My brothers never played

professionally in hockey, but they played hockey and lacrosse. When I was a little kid, they were instrumental in how I played the game and how I felt about teammates and the team concept. I always thought that they were just great teammates and great winners. I don’t think you have to copy an NHLer or a great hockey player. I copied my older brothers, and they didn’t really play anything beyond the beer league.

What advice would you give to kids playing today?Play for the fun of it. Don’t play to become a pro, just

play to have fun. Dream about playing in the NHL, but don’t play for that reason. Just play for fun.

J immy Devellano joined the social media revolution as a means to publicize a publishing venture.

But recently, the Red Wings’ senior vice president and the newly-minted inductee to the Hockey Hall of Fame, has been inundated with congratulatory messages on Facebook.

“I started it basically because I had written the book, ‘The Road to Hockeytown’, and I thought it might sell a few copies,” said Devellano, who, as of early December, had 450 Facebook friends.

Hundreds of Facebook friends have posted warm-wishes to Devellano’s page, which has delighted him. “It is funny,” he said. “I’ve reconnected with a lot of people that have found me, or I’ve found them, through Facebook. It’s been a nice tool.

“You hear from a lot of people, and some sort of surprise you when you get something like this. … I’ve gotten a lot of nice calls and letters from people that go way, way back.”

Devellano only needs to turn back the clock 25 years to remember a more turbulent time that could have derailed his Hall of Fame management career. It was Devellano’s fourth season as the Red Wings’ general manager when the hockey pundits suggested that Mike and Marian Ilitch steer the team in a different direction.

“I won’t lie to you,” Devellano said, “the intense criticism during and after the ’85-86 season, when we sunk to the bottom of the league, hurt. The criticism was intense, mainly from the media. … It was a tough time and it would have been easy for the owners to cut the cord after that year, as much of the media wanted them to do, but somehow I was able to convince them, or they convinced themselves, to hang in there a little longer with me.”

In his 29 seasons with the Wings, Devellano has been the architect of four Stanley Cup champions while maintaining stability behind the bench, employing seven

SOCIALIZING: Hundreds of Facebook friends have posted warm-wishes and congratulations to Devellano’s page since he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November, which also included a special pre-game ceremony before a Toronto-Buffalo game at Air Canada Centre. Devellano has owned Maple Leafs’ season tickets since 1958-59 when his parents bought them for him as a gift.

different head coaches. As a comparison, the other five Original Six teams haven’t managed to keep up with the Devellano standard, winning fewer league titles – four all together – while a carousel of 73 different coaches have led the New York Rangers (17), Chicago (16), Boston (15), Montreal (13) and Toronto (12) since 1982-83.

The Red Wings have missed the playoffs just three times during Devellano’s tenure, and have qualified for the postseason a record 19 straight seasons.

“You have to understand where we were when I came to Detroit,” said Devellano, who had been offered the Colorado Rockies’ GM job in 1981. “The team had missed the playoffs 14 of the previous 16 years, and that was in a 21-team league where 16 teams

made the playoffs. So when we talk about missing the playoffs with such consistency, you can see how poor they were.”

Since his hall induction, Devellano has had time to reflect on a career that began as a scout with the St. Louis Blues and continued with the multiple championships with the New York Islanders and Red Wings. Reaching the hall of fame is his pinnacle.

“It’s kind of a finality to a long 44 year career in the NHL,” he said. “I haven’t moved around a lot, and I’ve had some pretty damn good stability. I think, really, I’ve been rewarded for my longevity and somewhat the success that all three franchises had. Not that I was totally responsible, and I certainly want to emphasis that, I’ve been blessed to work with so many good people.”

FOR JOHAN FRANZEN: A lot of the players have nicknames; you’re the Mule, Henrik is called Hank, Hudler is Happy. Do any of the guys not like their nicknames? Or do they embrace them?

– Ellen Clemens, Clio, Michigan

“I don’t know. I’m fi ne with mine, but there’s nothing I can do about it, so I might as well embrace it. … I have a foreign name, so I think it’s easier (to use).”

FOR HENRIK ZETTERBERG: I’m just wondering what is your favorite city to visit when out on a road trip, and why?

–Carole Evans, San Diego, California

“My favorite city on the road, I would say Chicago. They have a real nice downtown and you can do some shopping and there are some great restaurants. Sometimes I am a big shopper, and it’s not often that you have the time, or the places to go, so it’s fun to do when you’re on the road and in two minutes you’re in some good spots.”

FOR JIRI HUDLER: What would you like for Christmas?

–Dawn Elkins, Rockford, Michigan

“A nice book. That’s what I want for Christmas; true story.”
