SORT IS THE FIRST OF FIVE STEPS IN THE 5S PROCESS. IT DIRECTS WORKERS TO TAKE THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS:

5S“RED TAG” Unnecessary ItemsWhen following the “Red Tag” process, take these steps:1. Identify unneeded, misplaced items2. Set Red Tagging Criteria3. Attach Red Tags(Get Red Tag from 5S
Mgmt.)4. Move the items to a holding area.
Register them. Assign responsibility to the holding area
5. Dispose of the truly unneeded items that kept in central holding area

5SRED TAGGING CRITERIA
When attempting to determine if an item is unneeded, ask yourself these questions: * Does it have a function in this area?* Is it needed? How often/many? By whom?* If we remove it, will it really matter?* Is it in the way? Does it take up too much space? Leave here or move to a new location?

5SRED TAG EVALUATION
• Document result of red tagging. Create register book/Log Book to record the list of red tag item
• Display pictures of items and placed it on a Notice Board/5 S Corner visible to all.
• If it is difficult to decide whether an item is necessary or not, put a different tag and segregate it in the holding area before moving to central holding area.

5SRED TAG HOLDING AREA
• Red Tag Holding Area is near the work station that is being “5S’ed” and is temporary.
• It is usually available for about one month for workers to reclaim items if they determine they do indeed need something that they had initially removed.
• The Red Tag area needs to be clearly marked.

5SRED TAG HOLDING AREA
• After one month the Red Tag area needs to be moved to a central location. This area is available for employees to reclaim items for 60 days.
• After 60 days all-left over red tagged items are removed and disposed of.
