Vision Statement
The Municipality of Red Lake is a progressive community strategically located on the major access route to a large part of Northwestern Ontario, a region with significant potential for sustainable development.
As a community, the Municipality is characterized by our northern hospitality and our entrepreneurial spirit. We recognize the importance of partnerships and employ them, both within the Municipality and with
our neighboring communities, to enable development and encourage social and economic growth. The Municipality of Red Lake is composed of a number of distinct communities, each of which is respected for its individuality and uniqueness. Each community is a supportive integral member of our larger united Municipality. As an organization, the Municipality of Red Lake is respected for the high value placed on the social and economic commitment given to its residents and citizens. Our governance and organizational structures and practices are recognized for their integrity, effectiveness and efficiency. Our full service community’s economy is based on mining,
wood resources and tourism. We are a distribution centre for goods and services to that part of Northwestern Ontario accessed through the expanding network of roads originating from our gateway location. Our municipal endeavors in each of these economic sectors reflect our need to ensure the sustainability of our community and enhance its compatibility with the physical, social and economic environment in which we exist. The Municipality of Red Lake is recognized and celebrated as a community in which businesses can succeed and all residents are proud to live, work, play, and retire.
Mission Statement
The Municipality of Red Lake is a legally incorporated organization which acts in a formal
manner to provide leadership, make decisions and take action regarding the establishment
and implementation of policies, procedures and standards regarding matters of public interest
to all residents. The Municipality of Red Lake is also a vehicle whereby its residents work
together to identify needs and formulate plans which manage change and address challenges
in ways that will enhance their quality of life.

Nestled in Ontario’s Northland, at the end of Highway 105, 170 kilometers north of the Trans-
Canada Highway, there is a place of beauty second to none...Red Lake. Our community has
all the modern conveniences and amenities necessary to lead a less stressful rural lifestyle.
Though the community of Red Lake is less than a century old people have lived in the area
for centuries. Early inhabitants were the Cree and Sioux Nations but approximately 300
years ago the Ojibway became the dominant culture. In the 19th century fur was the main
commodity of the Canadian North necessitating the formation of Red Lake as a fur outpost.
As the fur industry struggled in the late 19th century an exciting new industry (gold) took its
place and in 1925 the gold rush began. Over the years, mining has and continues to, exude
a major economic influence over the area. Through the years one mining company continues
to flourish, operating as Goldcorp Red Lake Gold Mines, it is the largest employer in the
region employing over 1,200.
In the recent past forestry played a significant role in the local economy. Timber and wood by
-products were harvested and shipped to processing mills and facilities across Northwestern
Ontario. Despite a recent national decline and the subsequent crisis in the forestry industry,
an extremely promising and ambitious project is scheduled to start in the area. Two Feathers
Forest Products LP is in the process of finalizing details to construct a plant to manufacture
value-added wood products destined for overseas markets. This unique business venture
promises to provide some relief to the beleaguered Canadian forestry industry.
Many tourists come to the Red Lake area to experience the world class outdoor activities.
With over 100 fishing and hunting camps in the Red Lake region, tourism factors significantly
in the regional economy. Tourism has been identified as a growth industry with enormous
potential. Eco-tourism is growing in popularity and is been promoted by an international
marketing campaign. Five hundred miles of shoreline; abundant wildlife; excellent fishing;
snowmobile trails; cross-country skiing; and other activities ensures a rich outdoor
experience.
Red Lake enjoys a long and continuous history of float plane transportation. Red Lake’s
largest annual event, the Norseman Festival, is based on the historic Canadian-made float
plane referred to as the Norseman. This festival attracts enthusiasts worldwide. From music
festivals, to fishing derbies, to winter activities, to curling bonspiels and other sporting events,
Red Lake offers plenty of recreational activities that everyone can enjoy.

Airport
A very busy airport with a 5,000 foot all weather paved runway is used by over 32,000 visitors per year. The airport has regularly scheduled flights and charter service is available. The busy terminal building handles the daily variety of people and cargo demands. A new Airport Terminal Building is under construction with scheduled completion in 2011.
Tourism
The active tourist industry is well served by many tourist camps and outfitters in the area. Red Lake is a vibrant tourist destination hosting visitors from all over the world. We are known for our excellent wilderness and outdoor adventures. Our proximity to Woodland Caribou Provincial Park positions Red Lake as a “Gateway” to all types of outdoor activities.
Resource-Based Industries
As the gold mining and exploration industries continue to discover new mining strikes, excellent opportunities for mining service companies abound. In the near future, value-added forestry opportunities will further fuel Red Lake’s demand for service sector and support businesses.

The above figure illustrates the 2006 labour force (2,870) living in Red Lake by employment sector. In terms of total labour force in Red Lake, the mining sector is of greatest significance with 683 (24%) individuals involved in this industry. The retail, accommodations and food services sectors also account for a large percentage of the labour force with 304 (11%) and 276 (10%) individuals respectively.

Featuring industrial-zoned lots ranging in size from .75 to 4.71 hectares, this strategically-located industrial park will be fully serviced in 2011. Phase 1 will consist of property with water, sewer and hydro available to suit every business requirement. The internal service road provides unrestricted access to all lots, while Nungesser Road provides convenient external entry to the entire industrial development. The industrial park is located 2 kilometers north on Nungesser Road and is literally within minutes of Goldcorp Red Lake Gold Mines, the Red Lake Airport and, will be north of, and immediately adjacent to, the proposed Two Feathers Forest Products LP value-added wood manufacturing plant. Plans are being discussed to extend Nungesser Road to provide an all-weather road accessing remote First Nations communities located north of Red Lake. Increased industrial activity is clearly evident around Red Lake, and we expect the industrial park to fill quickly meeting current and future business demands.
