The legislative base of Ukraine is characterized by wide enough opportunity to organize activities aimed at nature preservation, including amphibians.

The last (second) edition of the Red Book of Ukraine was carried out back in 1994. According to Article 12 of Law of Ukraine about the Red Book of Ukraine, which provides for re-edition of the Red Book of Ukraine no less often than once every 10 years, on June 15, 2004, on the basis of the Zoology Institute named after I. I. Shmalgauzen of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine a conference of curators of individual groups of animals of the National Commission of The Red Book of Ukraine was held.

The publication in 1994 depending on the state and degree of threat to populations of species listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, was applied following categories: -Disappeared -Endangered -Vulnerable -Rare -Unknown - Insufficiently known -Recovered

ONE OF THE ENDANGERED ANIMALS IS ACHERONTIA ATROPOS. QUITE A LARGE BUTTERFLY WITH A WINGSPAN OF 11 - 13 CM.

One of the disappeared animals is  saiga antelope. The body length of 140 cm, height 80 cm. Weight - 40 kg. They have moving nose-proboscis.
