Seeing DoubleBy Jacob Bray

Wauseon High School is unique in many ways. One of the ways WHS differs from other area

schools is by the amount of twins in the building. Having a twin is something that most normal siblings will not ever be able to understand.

Sophomores Regan and Rylee Ford were born on November 19, 1995. The elder twin is Regan, but only by 30 seconds. Being a twin has many benefits, but the main benefit for Regan and Rylee is always having someone to talk to. The dynamic duo has a lot of common hobbies, but the hobby they both have is dirt-track racing. When they were little, they were dressed alike. Even to this day, they are still called each other’s names all the time.

Juniors Bekah and Josh Cales are siblings that share a birthday on September 28, 1994. Josh is 2 minutes older than Bekah. Both are involved in sports, Bekah is in cheerleading and Josh is on the football and baseball teams. When they were little, they were dressed alike for Christmas pictures and those sorts of things. Josh says, “the best part of being a twin is that we have a lot of the same classes, so she helps me remember my assignments.” Bekah’s favorite part is “ he helps me study for tests and I like his

company.” Although they are twins, Josh and Bekah don’t get called each other’s names often because they don’t look alike.

Aneesa and Aleea Volkman are freshmen at WHS this year. The twins share a birthday of February 10th, 1997. Aneesa is older by a minute though. They have similar hobbies, one of which is “talking about hot guys in movies such as Josh Hutcherson as Peeta in The Hunger Games.” They were dressed alike, but they usually had different colors on. They have many favorites to being twins. they are “always having someone to hangout with and to do homework with. It’s kind of like having your best friend with you 24/7.” They get

called each others names often, even sometimes by their parents.

Seeing Double ContinuedBy Jacob Bray

Sophomores Derrick and Jameson Kamp graced this world with their presence on October 18, 1995. Jameson is the older twin. When asked what similar hobbies the boys have, the response was, “Sleeping, that’s about it. Oh, and video games.” Derrick participates in track, cross country, basketball, and band. Jameson competes on the quiz team, speech team, tennis team and band as well as his role in the Fall play. They were dressed alike when they were little, and sometimes still wear their baby clothes around the house. Both of their favorite parts of twin life is being able to read

each other’s minds. They used to get called each other’s names a lot, but now a days, they are in different activities, so the switcheroo doesn’t happen as much.

Korey and Kaycee Ford are sophomores at WHS. The Ford’s share a birthday of September 25th, 1995. Korey is the older twin, but only by a little. Korey is on the basketball team and baseball team. Kaycee doesn’t have any after-school activities. The pair was always dressed differently. Kaycee’s favorite part of being a twin is the closeness they have as twins. Their accounts on getting called each other’s names differs, though. Kaycee says that they are called each other’s names “every

once in a while.” On this same matter, Korey states “No.”

Juniors Jacob and Deanna Juan were born on August 16, 1995. The older twin is Jacob. The similar hobbies that the twins share are reading and tennis. They were never dressed alike in their younger years. Jacob’s favorite part of being a twin is having help with homework. Deanna’s favorite part is having help with chores and studying. They also have the same friends. They only get called each other’s names by good old mom and dad. They don’t understand why though, Jacob is almost a foot taller

than Deanna! Freshmen Brooke and Bailey Hardy share a birthday of November 14th, 1996. Of the two, Brooke is the older twin. They are both in band, speech, and they are huge fans of Harry Potter. When they were little, their parents dressed them alike, kind of. They wore the same outfits, but the outfits were different colors. They have the same classes, so homework and studying are easier to finish. When asked if the pair gets called each other’s names, the response was, “All. The. Time.”

Impact at StateBy: Dugan Shadbolt

The 2011-12 season has been great for Wauseon wrestling. This year Wauseon had three wrestlers place in the state tournament Wade Hodges , Zane Krall, and Dalton Nicely. These three worked very hard over the season to prepare to make a run at the state title. These very talented wrestlers fought hard and made a name for themselves on the state level. Wade Hodges, only a freshman, won his placing match to place 7th. Zane Krall got all the way to the state final as a junior he placed 2nd in the state. Dalton Nicely the only senior of the group also pushed his way to the final finishing 2nd. Congratulations from all of us here at the Red & White.

Perfection!By: Colin Dietrich

A perfect, undefeated season is every great basketball players dream. There are very few athletes that get the chance to experience the feeling of perfection. However, perfection is exactly what the Wauseon JV Lady Indians accomplished this season. The JV Lady Indians, coached by Mike Marshall, finished the 2011-2012 season with a promising 20-0 record. “It just feels amazing knowing that all of our hard work paid off,” said freshman guard Maddie Richer. It definitely does take some dedication, and there are many major keys to staying consistent throughout the year. Sophomore Morgan Murry says, “The major keys were playing together, staying away from drama, keeping our heads up even if we didn’t play well, and just being superstars.” Preparation is also a major key, as players must know their opponents and be prepared for what they may do. As freshman Sariah Yackee stated, “Every game we knew who we had to stop, what plays to run, and we were prepared. Everyone had a job to fullfill.” After a perfect 20-0 season, there may be many games that stick out or are the most memorable. However, both freshman Maddie Richer and Sariah Yackee noted that their 20 point win over Archbold was at the top of the list for most memorable games. This perfect season for the JV is very promising for Coach Brad Myers and the varsity team in the future. However, it will still take a lot of work in the off season, as the girls noted, to be just as good next season at the varsity level. “We have to keep working hard and stay humble. We have a very talented team with many great girls, and we can accomplish anything if we set our minds to it,” stated Maddie Richer. Morgan Murry also added that they must “Continue to work hard and strive for this goal again next year.”The girls were happy with a 20-0 season, however, they are not satisfied as they hope to continue the success next season. Sariah Yackee would like to take a moment to thank everyone who came out and supported them this season. Also, Maddie Richer would like to say to her teammates, “I love you all so much and feel so blessed to be a part of the team with all of you!” The members of this undefeated 2011-2012 JV basketball team look to be back next season and continue a successful high school career.

Something to Say, Nothing to Proveby Abby Fisher

We’ve all seen those kids who stay late after school, talking to walls... babbling into thin air... furthering our suspicions that they may be slightly schizophrenic... But don’t worry. It’s not (entirely) necessary for you to call in the authorities and have them bring along a straight jacket. Realize that these kids aren’t exactly crazy; they’re Speechies, or members of the Wauseon High School Speech and Debate team. They’ve been out there talking to walls ever since October, and their hard work has finally managed to pay off. This season ended tremendously well, with the team entering 19 new members into the National Forensics League. On top of that, 11 competitors made their way to the State Tournament held at Jackson High School on March 2nd and 3rd. Saul Triana, Brooke Hardy, and Justin Mourguet in Student Congress; Cassidy Ladd, Janelle Nafziger, Caitlin Ackley and Katlyn Demaline in Duo; Abby Fisher and David Hench in Original Oratory; Mana Maxted in Dramatic; and Lucy Frank in Oratorical Interp. The competition, drawing in more than 500 students from around the state, was fierce, but Wauseon was able to meet the challenge when the Duo team of Cassidy and Janelle broke through into quarter-finals. Also, Mana Maxted made her way into the semi-final round of Dramatic, earning her a spot among the top 12 in the state of Ohio. And while the Wauseon team was incredibly proud of it’s strong finish at State, let’s not forget about the National Tournament to be held over the summer in Indianapolis. Caitlin Ackley and Katlyn Demaline qualified in their category of Duo Interp, using their piece ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’. The pair is very excited about representing Wauseon at the NFL National Tournament and ending out the Speech season with a bang. Good luck Caitlin and Katlyn, congratulations to everyone who made it to state, and thank you to everyone who made the 2011-2012 Speech season memorable!

Staying Afloatby Jacob Bray

The Wauseon High School swim season officially ended on February 23th, 2012 in Canton this season with a 4x100 relay team. The team consisted of Seniors Adrienne Hallett and Erica Precht, Junior Jessica Humbarger, and Freshman Ashley Smith. The ladies swam a 3:45.67, which was better than the time that they were billed at going into the meet. Unfortunately, the team did not qualify for the state finals. The Red and White would like to congratulate the relay team on a great season! Also competing in Canton was the duo of Kendall Weber and Lacy Mynhier. After three years of diving in the state championships, Kendall finally placed 1st in the competition. Also, after multiple times competing at the state championship, Lacy Mynhier placed 4th. Congratulations to Kendall and Lacy on a spectacular four years of diving.

Be InspiredBy Caitlin Ackley

Inspiration... Where does it come from? Well, for Tanner Ely and Darcie Dominique, dancing inspires a whole world of possibilities. Tanner has been teaching dance classes at Stars Unlimited Dance and Baton Studio for four years now, and Darcie for two. Both really enjoy what they do and were thrilled the day their instructor asked them to help teach classes. “I wanted to teach for a long time.” says Dominique. “My instructor asked me if I would like to teach and I was so excited. I couldn’t turn down an offer like that!” says Ely. When asked what her favorite thing about dancing was Tanner replied, “Getting to see the kids every week and also being someone that they can look up to.” “I’m always happiest when I’m at dance,”says Dominique, “It’s hard to be in a bad mood while you’re dancing!” Both Tanner and Darcie enjoy being role models for the kids. “I remember how much I used to look up to my own teachers and now a lot of the kids look up to me in the same way.” says Dominique. Tanner loves how there is always something to put a smile on her face. Tanner and Darcie would like to continue teaching classes after high school. Darcie would eventually like to work with a competition team or teach her own choreography. Tanner hopes to dance either professionally or just for a small town like Wauseon. Tanner and Darcie have influenced the lives of many young dancers and plan to continue inspiring children throughout their lives. Keep on dancing girls!

All-Star CheerleadersBy: Alex Drummer

Kayla Edie, Senior at WHS, and Sammie Ohlinger, Junior, attend Ohio Cheer Academy (OCA) in Waterville, Ohio. They are both a part of the gym’s all-star cheerleading squad. This is Kayla’s second year on the Senior squad at OCA and Sammie’s first. They both admit there are ups and downs to being involved in a non-school sport. The girls find the driving distance and the amount of time involved as downsides to their participation at the gym. However, they have much to say on the positive end of it. They both enjoy getting to meet new people and state it as a major plus to be involved in a sport outside of school. Kayla also states, “When it's not a school sport, you know that everyone participating in it actually wants to be there because they had to search to find it.” The squad has three hour practices every Sunday, but both Kayla and Sammie come in on Mondays as well. On competition weeks, the team practices an extra day as well. Sammie states, “A typical practices involves perfecting our tumbling, stunting, and dance skills in our routine.” The girls have had very much success at OCA.. The squad competes in around ten competitions a year, and they take place anywhere in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. The team recently won their division at Super Nationals and placed second out of nine teams in a competition in Columbus. Both Kayla and Sammie note winning Super Nationals as their most memorable moment. Kayla also adds, “ Winning our division of U.S. Finals and being ranked third in the nation” to her greatest accomplishments. The girls’ joy and passion for cheerleading is truly inspiring. Kayla and Sammie both love what they do, and would recommend OCA to anyone. Kayla recommends it for many reasons, “This gym is filled with caring coaches that would do anything to help someone better themselves as an athlete and a person. Also, the athletes that go to this gym are great. I couldn't imagine finishing out my time as an all-star cheerleader with any other gym.” Sammie adds, “ It's a great facility that wants to work you to your best potential.” The Red & White would like to wish these talented young ladies good luck in the rest of their season!

The Wooley BrothersBy: Colin Dietrich

Everybody knows the 6’9” Senior, Wade Wooley. However, very few people know the biggest fighter in the Wooley family.

Thane Wooley, Wade’s 10 year old little brother, who has overcome incredible odds throughout his life and continues to inspire people each and every day. Thane may only be just over 4 feet tall ,but he is Wade’s hero and everyday inspiration. Life hasn’t always been picture perfect for the Wooley’s, but giving up is not an option.

At the age of four, Thane was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma. Being the worst possible stage of cancer, Thane was given just a 5% chance of living. For many, this is the time to just break down and ask, “Why us?” However, that is not what Wade and his family did. They continued to fight, and Thane made steps towards getting healthier. There is one major word to describe Thane and that is “inspiring.” With Thane always being in and out of the hospital, life was especially tough for Wade. “It was tough having parents out of the house a lot; I had to take on big roles at such a young age,” stated Wade. Wooley also mentioned, “I had to do things that children aren’t supposed to do at such a young age. I had to step up and take care of things around the house when my parents were gone and I had to take care of my sisters.” Wade suddenly became a leader of the house at just the age of 12. After years of treatment and long days and nights, Thane was eventually cancer free. It was a great time for the family, as things slowly started to get back to normal. Mrs. Wooley got back to work as a babysitter, and things were looking in a more positive direction. However, years later disaster struck again.

This time, at the age of eight, Thane was once again diagnosed with neuroblastoma. The doctor told the family, “You’ll need another miracle.” These words are words the family will never forget. Wooley also said, “The treatments and pain he had to endure is grueling. I can’t imagine how much pain he’s in a lot of the time, so I look up to him as my hero.” This time around, Wade was a bit older and knew more what to expect. However, it was not a walk in the park. Challenges faced the Wooley’s everyday. Financial trouble was one major challenge, as it was hard to find money for the littlest things. It was very rare that you would drive past the Wooley home and see many people home. Wade and his sisters had to lean on other people for support. “There were a lot of people that helped. My aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends, teachers, and even random people volunteering to make us supper,” stated Wade. The support around the community was fantastic and really appreciated. Once again, after years of treatment and grueling pain, Thane was announced cancer free.

This is definitely a miracle for the Wooley family. “He’s a stud. He defied all odds and shocked not only us, but any doctor anywhere said he had 5% chance of survival and he’s still here. He’s a miracle,” said Wade. It is actually amazing to see how healthy he is now compared to when he was stuck in the hospital all the time. Many people think they have a rough life, but these times for the family were just grueling and dreadful.

Wade tries to remind himself of Thane everyday and to not take life for granted. “I always wear my live strong bracelet to remind me of him or whenever I’m in pain, I remember its nothing compared to what he has been through,” stated Wade. Wade also does little things to help, such as donating blood regularly. If you would like to help Wade in this movement, feel free to sign up through Mrs. Burke for the Wauseon High School blood drive. The drive will take place on Monday, April 2 throughout the whole school day.

______________________________________________________________Survival Guide

By Abby Fisher and Caitlin Ackley

Take a look at that calender and say a quick prayer; it’s 2012, which means that if you believe that the crazy, human-sacrificing, sun-god-worshiping Mayans were right, it’s the end of the world. According to them we technically have until the end of December to live, but we say, “Why submit to their rules?” The two of us fully believe that the human race can out-live whatever catastrophe is coming our way, and according to everything pop-culture has been saying lately, that catastrophe is zombies. Lots and lots of zombies coming to eat our flesh and steal our brains. But, if you use these last few months to prepare yourself, there is absolutely no way you will succumb to the hoards of undead that will soon be roaming across the entire Earth. Use these tips to ready yourself, and you’ll be laughing in the now mauled-off face of anyone who ever doubted you.

1.) Watch a ton of zombie movies. (This includes ‘The Walking Dead’ too.) Carefully observe the characters you see in these movies, and take note. What are they doing to survive? Is their strategy going to be able to help you too when the vicious hoards come? Are they foolishly acting out of fear or are they taking charge of their now-endangered lives?

Basically, watch these movies and learn from their successes, copy it for yourself, and learn from the mistakes of the poor chumps who get devoured.

2.) Play Nazi-Zombies like crazy. Studies have shown that (no matter how much our parents and teachers want to deny it) playing video games is actually a good thing. It improves creativity, logical reasoning skills, but most importantly for you,

it increases hand-eye coordination. Exactly the skill you’ll be needing for fighting off zombies!3.) Stock up on ramen noodles. When you’re on the run through post-apocalyptic North America, you’ll be needing a power boost. Our advice: ramen noodles. Nothing’s tastier, nothing lasts longer, nothing is more portable, and frankly, nothing’s cheaper. It would actually only cost you $240.90 to live off ramen (assuming you’re only eating it for every

breakfast, lunch, and dinner), so you can use the money you’ll save on your grocery bill to buy other survival supplies for when the zombies come!

4.)Trust no one, they might trip you when the zombies come. Keep your friends close, but keep your weapon closer. Whether your weapon be a Samurai Katana or a baseball bat.

5. Lock yourself in a gas station. (All the zombie experts are doing it.) Not only will you be surrounded by delicious snacks, you’ll be in the perfect safe haven.

6. Don’t be afraid of the dark. Lets face it, things always seem worse at night. Don’t be shocked if the lights just happen to go out.

7. Have a ‘Zombie Plan’ ready for when they strike! (Hey, the city of Salt Lake, Utah actually has one. Why can’t you?)

*Disclaimer: The advice in this article is meant to be facetious and purely hypothetical. We realize that there will never be an actual situation where you would need this advice, but what the heck? There’s no harm in watching zombie movies and eating a ton ramen.

The Evolution of MarioBy Abby Fisher

He started out as a pretty much a square block on an arcade machine, but has turned into one of the video-gaming world’s most famous mascots. Believe it or not, more kids these day recognize Mario than they do Mickey Mouse, but that’s not surprising: Super Marios Bros. is the second best-selling game of all time (the only thing that beats it out is Wii-Sports, and we all know that doesn’t count). Add on top of that all the sequels, remakes, and spin-offs, and you have one very prolific Italian-American Plumber. But

Mario hasn’t always been the man we see him as today. In the 31 years that have passed since Mario was created, he has evolved from a mish-mash of pixels into a

prolific gaming icon.

1. From the 1981 arcade game ‘Donkey Kong’, Mario, also known as ‘Jumpman’.

2. From the smash-hit on the NES (that huge gray box that was half the size of your tv), Mario from Super Mario Bros, all the way back in 1985.

3. Remember having the N64? Best part of your childhood, right? There was Pokemon Stadium, Ocarina of Time, Super Smash Bros... and then there was this, from Super

Mario 64. Yeah, no offense, but primitive 90’s 3D technology did not suit him the best.

4. And finally we have the Mario of one of the latest installments, Super Mario Galaxy. Lookin’ pretty fancy, right?

Is Linsanity a Real Contender for the MVP?Dugan: The Harvard grad and owner of many great nicknames has come out of what seems like no where to be the star of the Knicks and put the team in a place to stay in the playoff hunt, however, he is no where near the MVP.Jacob: Jeremy Lin is the most explosive player in the NBA today, next to Blake Griffin. MSG (Madison Square Garden) will soon be chanting “Lin-V-P.”Dugan: It doesn’t matter what the fans think, he averages almost 5 turn overs and when the Knicks matched up with the Heat in the biggest game of his career to this point, he had 8 points, 8 turnovers, and only 3 assists. Those are far from MVP numbers.Jacob: Well, with the pressure put on this young man, he won’t play as well as an experienced player. I mean how much pressure do you get put on you at Harvard or in the D-league? Last night was the second night of Lin adjusting to Carmelo being back. When they start playing together, everyone is in trouble.Dugan: Then Carmelo could maybe be in the MVP race, but Lin is not there yet. Four players coming off the bench out scored him. Lin’s biggest asset was that he was helping his team win and when the Knicks stopped winning, Lin becomes little more than a point guard who turns it over too much.Jacob: The team just needs to start clicking and let it turn into the Lin show. He’s their best player right now ,I feel, and if they nurture him right, he is a very legitimate contender for MVP.Dugan: He isn’t even the best player on his team how can he be a MVP contender? Not to mention

the fact that the big three in Miami all had 20 points or more, Kobe is being Kobe and just dominating the game in every way, and Durant and Westbrook combined for 91 points a couple nights ago. Lin is nowhere to be found.Jacob: Literally every other contender you mentioned has other role players. Lin does not right now until Melo steps up. Also, everyone that you mentioned previously has had an off night or two in his career. In a February fourth game, Lin had 25 points, five rebounds, and 7 assists. All while being guarded by all-star Deron Williams. The next game, playing without Melo or Amare Stoudamire, Lin had 28 points and eight assists against the Jazz.Dugan: Anything that happens against the Jazz doesn’t count unless its the dunk contest I guess ,but the dunk contest has gone from awesome to bad to worse. Getting back to Lin,of course, everyone has off nights, but he’s only had about 10 on days and that ratio isn’t very MVP like.Jacob: True, he hasn’t been on much, but he’s only been in the league for about a month. He’s only had about 45 games total and scoring double digits more often than not. There is no way he isn’t a legitimate contender.Dugan: How can you call a guy that’s been in the league for not even a month, played well but flopped on the big stage, a legitimate contender? It’s just absurd. With the amount of MVP talent this year to call Jeremy Lin a contender is a disgrace to many players like Kobe and Lebron who have been around awhile along with Durant, Westbrook, Paul, and Derick Rose.

Jacob: Lin flops on the big stage but LeBron didn’t? Did you watch the NBA championship last year at all? Besides Lin averages great numbers day in and day out. Against the Heat, he just didn’t eat his Wheaties that morning. Kobe is just old, although still putting up high numbers, Durant is a legitimate contender, as well as Westbrook. But I haven’t heard one thing about CP3 all year, other than the trade of course. Derrick Rose is a very good player as well and is a legitimate MVP contender.Dugan: Well, no one likes LeBron anyway so whatever. As far as Kobe goes, he’s been great this year despite having very little around him anymore with Gasol playing awful with the trade rumors and all. CP3 is a solid player having a solid year not a whole lot to talk about. He does his business, doesn’t really have off games, and gives his team a chance to win pretty much every night. That is definitely MVP worthy. Jacob: CP3 would be MVP worthy if it wasn’t for the other guy on the Clippers, Blake Griffin. I wouldn’t play well if I were probably going to get traded as well. Jeremy Lin is a very competitive, young player with great potential of winning the MVP. Dugan: You’re losing it JB.
