Recycling for a Lighter, Brighter and Better World

Green ALAFCO :

The Aluminium African Company

Recycling as an added value activity to the environment

Why should we recycle Aluminum UBC ( Used Beverage Cans ) :

Because Aluminum cans are naturally biodegradable after 300 years and more.

Because recycling aluminum requires 95% less energy, and produces 95% fewer greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), than manufacturing primary aluminum, and also uses significantly less water

Because Since the first industrial production of aluminum in the 1880s, 75% of an estimated 900 million tons of aluminum produced is still in use today.

Because Globally, close to 70% of all aluminum cans are recycled, making it the world's most recycled packaging product.

Because aluminum is infinitely recyclable.

Because The life cycle of an aluminum beverage can is just 60 days from “can to can.”

15 to 20 years is the average lifespan of an automobile

50 years is the approximate lifespan of aluminum in buildings

The project

The idea : UBC ( Used Beverage Cans ) Recycling :

Step 1 : Sorting, baling and exporting

Step 2 : Raising a smelting factory

The market opportunity :

-The scrap non ferrous market is a reverse market : The demand is always existing

- 7 million tons of aluminum is recycled every year

Company’s vision statement and ambition

- To be the Tunisian pionneer for implementing the ‘’ Cradle to Cradle ‘’

recycling process : From recovery to sorting to smelting to producing new

products.

Company’s mission statement and Road Map

- Our road map could explain our mission and strategy which is

sustainable. It implements our contribution to the environnement

protection by recycling used cans in order to provide a

sustainable development for the futur generations.

Company’s mission statement and Road Map

Where are we/ Where are we

going

Now After one Year After two Years

Activity & main task

-Baling UBC locally -Smelting UBC into ingots in Tunisia

- Establishing recovery and baling companies in Africa

Casting ingots into finished goods ( for :kitchen utensils, automotive, architecture etc…)

Export figures and targets ( Exporting T.O)

325 K € 1000 K€ 2500 K€

Environment & Social Sustainabiltity

- UBC recovery and procurement subcontracting

- Partnership with all environment actors : Government, Associations, companies, people etc…

- UBC recovery as a national culture and commitment to the environment.

UBC recovery in Tunisia : Figures and data

Recovery opportunities

43 % = 150 Tons

=

11.5 Million cans / month ( Can weight apprx 13 gr)

=

385 000 cans / Day

=

2000 new job ( 200 cans recovered / person / Day )

Recovery opportunities

- Providing and efficient opportunity to the informal collectors requires the effort of all the civil society contributors :

- Households

- Shops

- Companies

- Gouvernment

- Financial institutions

- Associations

- Cooperatives

The informal sector SWOT analysis :

Strength

- Aluminium is infinetly recyclable, the can lifecycle is around 60 days.- 8000 informel collectors existing + 2000 to be created if recovery will reach 95 %.- Business already existed and can be easily developped.

Weakness

- Lack on logistics background : Storing yard, transporting truck etc…- Difficulties on recovery due to the non involvment of the upstream recovery actors- Financing.- Activity not yet structred and standardized.- As retailers, the collectors are suffering from the wholesalers financial and logistics upside.

Opportunities

- New opportunities raised by the ‘’ Barbecha ‘’ program- Today Four micro-financing new institutions- The involvment of the exporters and all the value chain operators and stackholders as guarantee on financing and development.- Organisation into associations, companies and cooperatives.

Threats

- If opportunities will not be implemented and honored.

Action plan & recommendations Issue Action Deadline Pilot

Lack on logistics background

Financing & coordination with the wholesalers and exporters

- End of 2015 -Finacing institutions- Exporters

Difficulties on recovery

-Additional involvment of the civil society- Learning sessions should be organised on rolling basis

- periodically - Associations ( Barbecha) - Schools, universities, beaches etc..- Exporters, wholesalers

Financing - More access to financing

- Immediately - Exporters as guarantee- Financial institutions

Activity not yet structred and standardized.

-Informel collectors to be recongnised as an environment key actors- Spreading the pilot action of Mnihla- Tadhamen- La Marsa in all cities

- Pilot Actions already done -GIZ- All oprateors : Exporters, wholesalers, ANGED etc…

-Best practice Benchmarking

Green ALAFCO and the Informal sector

As far as our company involved and concerned :

-Mars 2015 : We have started a win-win partnership with GIZ and the ‘’ Barbecha association ‘’ of Mnihla-Tadhamen, in which we have introduced our company as final customer with a possibility to play the guaratntee for the collectors financing regarding the banks.

- Spreading the idea of Barbecha to other cities ( Tunis, Ben Arous ) is in ongoing process.

Thank you very much
