Eco-Ladrillo Bench SeatsUpdate # 3.

The children’s hard work in making eco-ladrillos was put to use this month when they used them to build bench seats around the trees in their play area.

The children of Casa Del Niño were keen to learn how to mix and apply the cement, and were involved in the process from beginning to end!

Created entirely out of found materials: recycled bicycle parts, a beam left over from a worksite, and a column poured out of cement.

With the help of a local workshop we completed and installed the seesaw!

Of all the construction so far, this item has caused the most excitement amongst the children. They race home from school to jump on it!

Bicycle SeeSaw

To build these bench seats we used over 500 eco-ladrillos. With community help to make the eco-ladrillos, we used over 75,000 plastic bags that would be otherwise be discarded into the river or the streets!

Update # 3.

The playhouse has been constructed using ferrocement : a technique which joins the flexibility

of iron (steel) and the resistance of cement. We have been fortunate to have groups of community

volunteers come to help, and to learn about the construction methods that we are using - which are new to this area of Central America. Their input has been invaluable to us... and inspirational to them!

Collected glass bottles function as

skylights, and create a beautiful glow inside the

house.

“Casita” Playhouse

Ozman and Juan Daniel work together to clean the bottles in the ‘cave.

One of our youth group volunteer days

where the youth learnt how to build using

ferrocement.

Creating the form for the house out of steel, to be

covered with a thin layer of cement.

Upcoming Events:~ Casita interior decoration.~ Artist Youth Group coming to paint murals with the children.~ Casa del Niño Committee members will create a basketball practice area.~ Biotopo Excursion to view the rare national bird: the Quetzal.
