You are about to enter one of the most amazing chapters of your life and are

fortunate to be doing so at the University of Virginia. Attending such a prestigious and

well-rounded university has truly been an honor, and joining a sorority has made our

experiences at UVa all the more rewarding.

The University has a longstanding tradition of student self-governance that allows

all students to take an active and leadership-oriented role in the many organizations

that UVa has to offer. The fraternity and sorority systems support the practice of

a student-led community and embrace the ideals of student self-governance. The

Inter-Sorority Council (ISC) is composed of a diverse group of women with varying

interests that span across the organizations of the University. The ISC includes

sixteen chapters, making it the largest women’s organization on grounds. We, as a

sorority community, strive to enhance the experiences of all Greek and potentially

Greek women at the University by providing resources and opportunities for

leadership, service, scholastic growth and social development.

Sorority life has enriched the college experiences of countless women throughout

our sixteen chapters, ours included. Greek life provides an opportunity for personal

growth as well as the chance to enrich oneself in the company of other amazing

women. Each woman’s experience is unique, but sororities add a meaningful

dimension that last well beyond graduation to the lives of all sorority women alike.

We encourage each of you to learn about the opportunities that the Inter-

Sorority Council has to offer and to participate in ISC recruitment this spring.

Being a part of this community has given us the opportunity to develop as

individuals and as leaders, providing us the opportunity to excel as the University in

ways we never thought possible. We have greatly enjoyed our time so far as part of

this supportive network of women and are certain that we will carry our experiences

with us for the rest of our lives. We hope that you consider joining the sorority

community and that you too will find a home within the ISC. We wish you the best

ISCInter-Sorority CouncilThe Inter-Sorority Council, ISC, is the largest body of undergraduate women at the University of Virginia. Approximately 33% of all undergraduate women are members of the Greek system. Sororities are not isolated groups, but rather they are part of the whole community. When you become a member of a sorority, you become a member of the ISC. Like most organizations, a president, vice-president of judiciary, vice-president of administration, and vice-president of recruitment head the ISC.

Eight other chair women serve on the executive board as well. These women lead committees designed to promote and protect the interests of the women of ISC. ISC representatives from each of the 16 sororities serve as members of each committee.

As a potential new member you will get to know the Recruitment Team, whose responsibilities include: organizing Recruitment, the Recruitment Counselors Program, Recruitment Orientation, and matching bid

lists. The Recruitment Team work continuously throughout the year to create a successful Recruitment.

Every week, there are several meetings held to ensure the continued success of the ISC community. The executive board holds a meeting to discuss issues pertinent to all 16 chapters. There are also weekly meetings of chapter representatives, as well as meetings between the 16 chapter presidents, to instill cooperation and communication amongst the chapters. These three weekly meetings serve as forums for discussion and interaction in the ISC.

The ISC has its own judicial board, which relies on a mediation process for cases that arise between chapters. Keeping with the University’s tradition of student self-governance, sorority women serve as the mediators.

ISC is continuously expanding in order to meet the needs of the chapters and their respective members. We hope that you will consider the sorority community at the University of Virginia a future possibility.

Inter-Sorority Council Executive Board

The Inter-Sorority Council is the governing body of the sixteen National Panhellenic Council (NPC) affiliated sororities at the University of Virginia. ISC promotes the sorority community by encouraging leadership, academic achievement, and service among all sororities. By interaction with each other, the chapters learn from one another and increase their connections among the many students at the University. In addition, ISC serves as a forum for the discussion of current issues facing college students and the sorority community. ISC also promotes equality; therefore, policies governing membership recruitment, social activities, publicity, and member conduct and responsibilities are established and monitored by the Inter-Sorority Council. As you can see, our Inter-Sorority Council is dedicated to maintaining and improving the quality of sorority life for women at UVa.

Sorority LifeScholarshipAll sorority members share one commonality: we are students first. The all sorority grade point average consistently ranks at or above the all women’s grade point average with the GPA for Fall 2010 standing at 3.395 and the all-women’s GPA at a 3.244. Additionally 59% of our women (972) were on Dean’s List for the fall semester. Both the ISC and the individual chapters host intentional programming geared at improving and supporting the scholastic performance of its members.

Service & PhilanthropiesAn important part of the undergraduate experience is learning to work with others and to give of yourself. Each of the 16 sororities believes in making a difference in the world, both locally and nationally. Members of the ISC never stop giving back. Our sororities at UVA host their own community service and philanthropic activities as well as participate in Dance Marathon, InterGreek Habitat, and other major campus service events, devoting countless hours and millions of dollars over the course of the Inter Sorority Council’s existence to causes greater than themselves.

SisterhoodJoining the sorority community here affords you the opportunity to form meaningful connections and lifelong friendships with a diverse group of students who share a common set of values and ideals. These special bonds provide you with support, guidance, networking opportunities and are invaluable in

every phase of your life, both here at UVA and beyond. Becoming part of our community not only enriches your undergraduate experience, but provides you with a home away from home for your time at UVA.

LeadershipDeveloping strong leadership skills, opportunities to practice these new skills and recognition for achievements are integral parts of the sorority experience. Greek women here at the university not only serve within the ISC and their own chapters but they lead some of UVA’s most prestigious and honored student organizations including Honor and Judicial committees, Student Council, Madison House and University Programs Council. Joining our community provides you with the opportunity to learn and grow as a leader both within the ISC and greater UVA community.

Social ActivitiesThere is never a dull moment in the life of a sorority woman at UVA. From socials to formals, sisterhood activities, participation in intramurals and Parents’ Weekends, each chapter provides their members social outlets in a safe and fun environment. Through joining a sorority at UVA, women can achieve a proper balance between social and academic values and activities.

The ISC has been thrilled to welcome our newest chapter to grounds this past year!

Round Robbins:This is the first round of recruitment, split between two days, during which potential new members get to visit all 16 chapters. The round consists of casual conversations and is designed to give you a brief overview and introduction to all of the sororities here at the university. These events are short, so we encourage everyone to relax and enjoy themselves!

Themes:The second round of recruitment allows potential new members to visit a maximum of 11 chapters. This round is considered a favorite by sisters and potential new members alike. The round is designed to allow each chapter to showcase their individual personalities through skits and more detailed information about their philanthropies, activities and financial requirements.

House Tours:It is during the third round of recruitment that potential new members visit a maximum of 7 chapters. This round

usually includes a tour of the house and affords potential new members and sisters the opportunity for longer conversations, so use this time to get all of your questions answered.

Preferentials:This is the final round of recruitment and potential new members can attend up to 3 chapters. During this final round chapters share part of their ritual with potential new members and reveal more about what their individual sorority experience and sisterhood means to them. We encourage you to listen carefully as the women are revealing the specific characteristics, values and ideals that are most important to their sisterhood.

Bid Day:This is the last day of the recruitment process and the point in which a potential new member would receive their invitation or bid to join a particular sorority. It is an exciting day as potential new members are welcomed into both the ISC community and their respective chapters.

Rounds ofRecruitment

How do I register for Recruitment?It’s easy! Go online to www.virginiaisc.com. Registration opens on October 12th and ends on the December 2nd.

What do I wear during Recruitment?Each round gets progressively dressier, beginning as “snappy casual” attire during Round Robbins, and ending with cocktail or little black dresses at Preferences. Once you have registered for Recruitment, the appropriate clothes for the specific rounds will be discussed more in depth.

What are my financial obligations when I join a sorority?Dues will be different at every house depending on many different factors, but generally the first semester as a New Member will have the highest fees. The average is around $1,200, and will decrease after your first semester in your new sorority.

Am I to talk to sorority women before I join a sorority?Because Formal Recruitment takes place in the spring at UVA, we have a Responsible Contact Policy in place. The Responsible Contact Policy allows potential new members to develop their own senses of the sorority community through natural experiences and

friendly contact among ISC sorority women and first-year women. Through these open conversations, no potential new member should feel that she is in anyway more privileged than others in the eyes of any one sorority. All women deserve the right to have an equal opportunity of membership upon entering Formal Recruitment and this policy insures that no women participating in recruitment feel that they are either at a disadvantage or an advantage for being offered a bid.

Do I need a recommendation or to be a legacy to join a sorority?No, recommendations are by no means necessary to participate in Formal Recruitment but are certainly accepted by the chapters. Similarly, you do not need to be a legacy to join a sorority. We want each potential new member to join the chapter she feels most comfortable in, regardless of legacy status or recommendations.

Do sororities haze?Absolutely not. Hazing is prohibited by the University Judiciary Committee, the student self-governing body at

UVA, as well as the Inter-Sorority Council. Hazing, as stated by the UVA policy, includes not only physical harm, but also mental and emotional harm. The ISC, along with individual chapters are committed to ensuring that the member’s experience with Greek life is a positive and healthy one, and completely void of hazing in any way shape or form.

Will I have to live in the sorority house?Each sorority has a different policy on living in the house. Typically, many women will choose to live in their sorority house during their third year. Though living in the house may not be necessary, it is a great opportunity to become closer to your sisters as well as a wonderful housing opportunity.

Contact PolicyThe “Contact Policy” exists to maintain a ‘level

playing field,’ so to speak, between all potential new members and the sororities and vice versa. This policy ensures that until the first day of Formal Recruitment no women participating in recruitment feel that they are either at a disadvan-tage or an advantage to being offered a bid.

During the fall semester until the first day of Formal Recruitment, the Responsible Contact Policy will be in place, which allows for natural friendships to develop between first-year women and sorority women. While sorority women may reveal their chapters, all discussion about sorori-ties should be about the ISC community as a whole and should not singly promote one chapter.

In addition, the following restrictions must be respected:

I. Sorority women may neither give gifts nor spend money on first-year women (relatives are exempt).

II. First-year women are neither permitted in, nor invited to any residence of a sorority woman until the first day of Formal Recruitment, with exceptions including sorority-sponsored philanthropies and Panhellenic preview events. Relatives are permitted to visit their affiliated family member’s residence, as long as it is not the Chapter House.

III. Sorority women are not permitted in any first year woman’s dorm room or place of resi-dency (relatives are exempt).

IV. Sorority woman may not engage in contact beyond a common courtesy greeting as an unaffiliated Greek woman with first year woman in any situation where alcohol is present.

V. Sorority women may not engage in contact beyond a common courtesy greeting with First year women in any situation where alcohol is present.

Safe Ride: 434-242-1122Potential New Members: For your safety, please never walk alone at night. Call the Safe Ride service, your Recruitment Counselor, or take the University Loop (U-Loop) bus line back to Grounds from Beta Bridge or Grady Avenue. The bus comes frequently, and you can call 1-866-748-4227 for exact bus times.

Financial ObligationsAverage Financial Dues for New Member Semester: $1200.00 This number is an average for all 16 houses and a range exists based on what the individual chapters choose to include and to make optional. Some houses will have required dues that are higher, and others that are lower. This money is divided among different things at each chapter; however, they may go towards things like: new member fees, chapter fees, parlor fees, initiation, rent and any other miscellaneous items. After the new member semester, the costs to be a member of a sorority will decrease.

Alumna/ae – an initiated member who is no longer in college.

Bid – an invitation of sorority membership.

Bid Card – a card signed by the potential new member after her last Formal Recruitment round upon which she states the sororities she would like to join in order of preference. If a woman receives a bid from a sorority on her bid card and does not accept it, she may not join another sorority for one full calendar year.

Bid Day – the last day of Recruitment, which includes activities at the chapter house.

Big Sister – after several weeks, the new member is often paired with an initiated member to be her big sister. This older sister serves as a resource and role model for the new member.

Chapter – the women who make-up the local collegiate membership of the international sorority.

Formal Recruitment – a series of events hosted by all sixteen sororities in order to meet potential new members during a scheduled time period and governed by the Inter-Sorority Council.

Informal Recruitment – less structured than formal recruitment, this process occurs in the fall semester and only upper-class women are eligible to participate. While not all chapters participate, each chapter recruiting in the fall holds a series of causal events in order to get to know and recruit upper-class women.

Initiation – a ceremony that brings a new member into full membership.

Inter-Sorority Council – the governing body of the sixteen NPC sororities at UVa. (www.intersorority council.com)

Recruitment Counselor – a sorority woman carefully selected and trained to guide potential new members and answer any questions with regard to ISC recruitment.

Sister – a term used by a member of a sorority to refer to another member of the same sorority.

Sorority – a group of women joined together in friendship for leadership, service, social and academic purposes.
