Soccer and Softball Spring into Action

    Warmer temperatures have made

    their way to Hillsborough, which

means spring sports season is here.

The Spring Soccer League and Girls

Softball League take over the fields

    each day.

Girls Softball League After three weeks of practices,

Softball Opening Day was held on

Saturday, April 25 with games at

    Singley Park and Docherty Park.

    Girls in Kindergarten through 12th

grade play two to three games per

New Partnerships with Local Recreation Softball Leagues This Season Allow Girls to Experience New Fields and Different Competition

    week at fields across Hillsborough.

Games are played at Ann Van

    Middlesworth Park, Docherty Park,

    Singley Park, and Woodfield Park.

New this year for teams in the

    Junior (3rd/4th grade), Middle

    (5th/6th grade), Intermediate

    (7th/8th grade), and Senior (9th-12th

grade) Leagues is the addition of

    cross-town games with local

    recreation softball leagues.

    Partnerships with Montgomery

    Girls Softball, Princeton Softball,

    and Branchburg Girls Softball

    Association were enacted this year.

    These partnerships allow girls to

    play different teams, experience

new fields, and make new friends.

Each league has their own special

rules to allow the girls to learn

    softball gradually and to experience

    success playing the game.

    The season will continue through

    June 13.

Spring Soccer League Soccer is a popular sport across the

country and across the world. Its

    popularity in Hillsborough is no

    different. With nearly 900

participants ranging from age 3 to

grade 12, the soccer fields are full

    of activity each night.

    Games are played on Saturday

    mornings and early afternoons at

    the Municipal Soccer Complex,

    Woodfield Park, Singley Park, and

    the Flagtown Annex.

    Increasing in popularity each year

is the Pee Wee Soccer program

designed for 3- and 4-year olds.

    This program allows children to

learn soccer skills for about 30

    minutes, then play a modified,

shortened game on a small field. It

    is a great way

for children to get acquainted with

the game of soccer in a non-

    competitive, recreational

    atmosphere.

The Soccer and Girls Softball Leagues are in full swing this spring at parks across town.

Winter Basketball Leagues Provide for Fun, Friendly Competition Basketball leagues for boys in

grades 4 to 8 and girls in grades 4

to 6 were played Saturdays in the

    winter at Auten Road and

    Hillsborough Middle Schools.

    High School boys played on

    Monday nights.

These leagues provide for fun and

    friendly competition with and

    against friends. The recreational

atmosphere of the league is what

    attracts many participants.

This season, there were nearly 275

    players, See BASKETBALL, pg 4

Over 175 Runners and Walkers Participate in 2nd Annual Run Around the Park

A beautiful spring day greeted over

175 runners and walkers of all ages

to Ann Van Middlesworth Park on

Sunday, April 19 for the second

    annual Run Around the Park.

    After Mayor Doug Tomson and

    Committeewoman Gloria McCauley

    started the run, runners and

walkers of all ages and abilities

began their journey on the course.

The scenic course was set on trails

and through the fields of the park,

with the start and finish line near

    the pond.

One of the events goals is to

    provide an opportunity to promote

a healthy and active lifestyle. To

enhance this mission the Parks and

    Recreation Department partnered

    with the Mayors Wellness

    Campaign.

This race is unique for its non-

    competitive nature. There are no

official results and no age group or

    overall awards.

Because of this, it is popular with

families who can run to course

together, and cross the finish line at

    the same time.

    The event showcases how

    Hillsborough parks provide

    excellent opportunities for

    recreation and leisure pursuits.
