The Value of PaintingMeet New Art Instructor, Joe Palotas

By Joe Palotas

I’ve always had a passion for the arts. Since I first picked up the pencil to draw a Loch Ness Monster utill now, I’ve been involved

in the world of fine arts. Marrying the love of my life in 2005. Jes-sica has been instrumental in supporting my dream to become a professional artist and has been the key to a wonderful decision for the family. Since then I have excelled in the art field as an in-structor and as an accomplished, artist being recognized by pub-lic schools, chambers of commerce and art centers alike.

My family has recently become permanent residents of the Roa-noke area - drawn by the region’s community spirit, natural beau-ty and growing art community. Hailing from Florida, I’m the type of artist that offers many different styles and ideas to choose from in my educational classes. I’ve been involved with multiple art centers as part of my residency of the west coast of Florida. Being a highly decorated artist for community involvement, teaching abilities and artistic talent will prove to be a wonderful value for the students of the Brambleton Center.

Teaching all ages has taught me the value of communication in arts education. When I teach a class I make sure to spend time with each student. I get to know what they are looking to accom-plish and help them find a path of success. We look at what is working, why and how we can build on that. Most folks have the ability to produce artwork that is pleasing to others, sometimes we just have to find the style that best brings out that ability.

One of the biggest questions I’ve come across is, “does a student have to start from the first class to understand what is happening

for the second class and so on?” No, the way I teach a class is spe-cific to each student, their abilities and the class theme. Lets say you missed the class teaching the importance of value but you can attend the next class on Impressionism. You will be taught exactly what you need for your level of skill and education to be successful in the Impressionism class. One class does not build on the next. Each class is specific in nature to the theme. Now that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to use what you have learned in a previous lesson, just that it is not required for you to have been there last month to enjoy a class this month.

Can anyone of any level benefit from one of my classes? Yes, I have had plenty of success teaching a group of students of all levels and abilities simultaneously. Lets say that you’re in a temperature of color class. One student might only be able to understand that blue means cold and another student needs more on the cool vs warm blues and why one is warmer and what does that do for a painting. Each student gets what they need to grow and con-tinue in their pursuit of furthering education without affecting each others personal growth. It’s a tough task to provide all levels of communication, but not impossible. My background includes winning the first Outstanding Service in Arts Education with the Art Center Manatee in Bradenton, Florida as a result of such teach-ing abilities.

I encourage everyone that loves painting and wants to learn something new, maybe a new technique, style or brush up on some color theory to join in on the fun. Let’s make some art, have some fun and make some new memories along the way.

Browse the classes shown to the right and learn how Joe’s unique teaching style can help you excel.

This will be the first session for us together as we explore our love for painting. As a group we will look at and develop our skills in value, answering questions like; How is depth developed? How can we successful-ly paint a canvas showing great color and interest? All skill levels are encouraged to participate. There will be plenty of laughs, fun and something for everyone! Just for KidsMusic TogetherThis program is a music and movement approach to early child-hood that develops every child’s basic music competence based on the recognition that all children are musical and can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat and participate in music. Children have a variety of opportunities to learn and create rhythm patterns, sing and makeup words to songs, and to put movements together to express a sound. Some children study the activities and ab-sorb the musically rich environment, while others sing, play, and dance freely to the songs and chants. All involved experience a comfortable, encouraging environment that respects individu-al temperaments and learning styles. Activities range from free movement to songs in unusual tonalities and meters. Participants leave each week with their music books and recordings so they can enjoy and play with music at home. For more information visit www.MusicTogetherInRoanoke.com or call our office at 540-915-2546. Each additional sibling is only $85. Parental par-ticipation is required.

Just letting go. That’s the thing I love about dancing. When the music gets under your skin, it’s impossible to stay still.

Movement has to happen. Everything else goes away.

I am a Celtic dancer. For me, that means I do mostly Scottish and Irish dances, but I’ve dabbled in dances from the Celtic regions of Spain and France, Wales and Canada. As the dancer in a Celtic band, I’ve traveled around Virginia to perform in festivals, taught classes, marched in parades and given demonstrations. I’ve even danced in 15 pubs in succession on St. Patrick’s Day between the hours of 5 pm and 2 am! Just FYI: By the end of that adventure, I couldn’t pick up my feet.

But I understand: many people are intimidated by dancing. They hear the music, they can tap their feet, but they “can’t dance.” The basics of dance are very simple: you move your body to rhythm. Don’t be put-off by complex-looking steps. The objection I hear most often when people are afraid to dance is, “I don’t know the steps.” Steps are nice, steps are fun, but they’re not important. Feeling the music is what’s important!

The Green Hill Medieval Faire is a great place to give dancing a try. It’s an annual event that provides a number of opportunities to find a beat and style that makes you move and wiggle. If you want to do more, dancers are often happy to teach visitors a step or two when they’re not performing.

Dance is one of the oldest forms of communication and expression. Around the world, people have used dances to tell stories, psych warriors up for battle or court a sweetheart.

Wars, trade and immigration mixed cultures from the Middle East, Asia and Africa with those of Eastern, Central and Western Europe

Dare to DanceJoin in the fun at the Green Hill

Medieval Faire on September 28 and 29. There WILL be dancing!

during the Medieval and Renaissance eras. Wandering the streets and alleys of Green Hill Medieval Village, you could easily come upon belly dancers from Morocco or Persia, demonstrating their sinuous flexibility and muscular control. You might find kilted dancers from the wild mountains of Scotland, flinging their arms and legs in intricate patterns and with dazzling agility. Noble ladies might perform circle dances, or peasant lads and lasses might wind ribbons around the Maypole.

As a dancer, I feel tremendous joy when people are inspired to stomp and wiggle without worrying about the right steps. Dancing will strengthen your bones, raise your spirits, improve your cardiovascular system and reduce stress. It might clear your complexion and make you taller.

Experiment a little. Do your favorite rock and roll dance! Stomp your feet! Clog! Sway! If you get up and dance, we might even tell you what we wear under our kilts.

Confessions of a Celtic Dancer

Green Hill Medieval Faire & Highland GamesExperience the adventure, pageantry, magic and romance of me-dieval times. Green Hill Park will be transformed into a spectac-ular display of history full of entertainment, eccentric characters, swordplay, equestrian antics, magicians, music, crafts, merchants and hearty food and drink. New this year, enjoy performances by Celtic dancers. Back by popular demand, admission will be FREE to anyone who comes dressed in garb! Children ages five and under are also free.

swimming instructor Lindsay Jones (right), works with participant Johanna Espelage (left) on her stroke technique.

By Scott Ramsburg

No matter what age you are, it’s never too late to learn how to swim! At Green Ridge Recreation Center we’ve heard all kinds

of excuses for not getting in the water - from time commitment issues, to mobility concerns, and even fear of failure.

Swim instructor Lindsay Jones says that embarrassment about their inability to swim keeps many participants from signing up. “I think a lot of adults are, number one, afraid of water because they’ve had a bad experience with it, and number two, ashamed that they don’t know how to swim yet.”

Participant Johanna Espelage never thought she’d be taking swimming lessons this late in her life. “I really enjoy it! I’ve got bad knees, so running isn’t an option any more. Swimming is a pain free way for me to exercise.”

Johanna is just one of the many participants that are surprised by what they can accomplish through a little hard work and some quality instruction.

“I don’t think anyone leaves unhappy once they’ve signed up,” says instructor Jones. “Most people get over their fear very early and achieve success. If they want to learn how to survive in the water, they can learn that in one session. If they want to learn how to get from one end to the other without stopping, it may take two sessions. I have yet to have a student who has not ad-vanced in some way.”

Some students are satisfied coming away more at ease in the water, while others take the classes to learn different strokes or

perfect their breathing. We’ve even had participants training for triathlons or distance competitions. Instructors can train these more advanced swimmers how to use better stroke technique to get a more efficient workout - getting more distance in less time.

Lindsay Jones says that of all the aquatic programs at Green Ridge, adult swimming lessons are her favorite to teach. “It’s really rewarding being an instructor because you can see the light bulb go off. They’re here because they want to be here, not because a parent forced them. It’s a huge step just to make it to swim les-sons, and I think most of my participants make themselves proud by taking this leap.”

Fall adult swimming lessons meet Tuesday and Thursday evening, or Saturday morning beginning September 10. See our full adult program lineup on page 29 for details.

Did you know that over 3.5 million children under the age of 14 are being treated for a sports injury every year? And with school activities and sports starting back up for the

season, it can be hard to tell the difference between a simple injury to treat at home and an injury that requires medical attention. However, if certain injuries go untreated, they can lead to more serious conditions and may even require surgery further down the road.

Know how to tell the differenceWhen it comes to sports injuries in children, there are two types: acute and chronic over-use. Knowing the difference between these can help you judge the severity of the injury and help you make a decision on whether to treat at home or call your physician.

An acute injury is one that occurs suddenly during an activity. Some of the signs for these are sudden, severe pain or swelling. There can also be extreme weakness, the inability to place weight on a limb, or not be able to move a body part through the full range of motion.

Chronic overuse injuries are usually a result of using one area of the body too much over a long period of time. Some of the signs of this type of injury are pain while doing an activity, swelling, or a dull ache when the body is at rest.

Know when to seek helpSome injuries can be treated at home while others require medical attention, and know-ing when to schedule an appointment can be beneficial in the long run.

Simple sprains and strains, where the person is able to move and bear weight with mild pain and swelling, can be treated at home with ice and elevation. Most of these injuries will feel better within 24-48 hours. If the pain continues past two or three days, or there is still difficulty moving, you should call your physician for evaluation. These issues can be a sign of a more severe sprain or strain, which may take several weeks to heal and shouldn’t be ignored. Some injuries that are commonly overlooked are knee and shoulder injuries. These are the injuries that, if untreated, can prove difficult to heal.

“Meniscus (cartilage) tears, ligament injuries (ACL, MCL), and knee cap dislocations are usually caused by a load and twist movement,” said Thomas K. Miller, M.D., a Carilion Clin-

ic orthopedic surgeon. “Any injury with an audible pop, focal pain, or swelling should not be overlooked.”

Shoulder injuries, to the rotator cuff or biceps tendon, are usually caused by sud-denly lifting something heavy. If you are unable to lift your arm after the initial pain, you should schedule an appointment for it to be looked at.

“The biggest concern is difficulty with re-gaining motion or loss of strength,” said Dr. Miller. “The true inability to move a body part, limb deformity, rapid swelling of, or around, a joint, and numbness beyond the initial period of shock or surprise are signs of a serious injury and should be evaluat-ed immediately.”

Knowing when to seek medical attention for an injury can not only help the healing process, but can also lower the possibility of further problems down the road. Inju-ries will occur, but knowing the best way to treat them can make all the difference.

To help you make informed decisions on treatment for injuries whenever you’re on the go, download the Carilion Clinic mo-bile app. You can also visit CarilionClinic.org for more information about different kinds of injuries. .

Close your eyes and imagine running for your life from blood covered, flesh eating, virus spreading zombies. Not your idea

of a fun time? Then you haven’t heard about October’s much an-ticipated Roanoke Zombie 5k! The insanity that has swept the na-tion has finally caught up with the Roanoke Valley. Runners and Zombies alike will be gathering together early on Saturday morn-ing, October the 5th for this wacky event. The Western Virginia Regional Jail and Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism will donate all net proceeds to the Special Olympics Virginia. A good scare for a good cause!

Runners and Zombies alike should arrive anticipating a fun race with lots of thrills and chills. But remember you’re not just running against the clock you are running from flesh-eating, virus-spread-ing, bloody zombies. Participants will use speed, agility, and their intact brains to overcome obstacles and avoid flesh-eating Zom-bies. It’s a flag based system of points, so the more flags you keep on your belt the better chances you have of surviving to the end of the race. Keep running on to the finish line and you might win one of the drawings for some great fun prizes. For information on how the race works visit www.roanokeZombie5k.com.

Administrators for the event have had supporters donating ev-erything from police tape, prizes, websites and free marketing to help this very worthwhile cause. Join the craze and become a part of this very special 5k which is turning into one of the Full For Fall 2013 alley’s favorite events for the fall of 2013.

Although this is the regions first Zombie Run, it won’t be the last. With the craze still strong in most areas of the country, you can be sure that sometime next year you’ll get another chance to sur-vive.

Coming to Green hill Park on october 5... A race where you chase or BE chased.

Zombie 5KRoanoke’s “Scariest” Race

1. Running Shoes- They’re called the walking dead for a rea-son. If you’re heart, lungs and brain are in good shape you

should make it through just fine!

2. Granola Bars - You’ll need that boost of energy to scale the obstacle they are chasing you towards. Also as a side note,

even though it’s the end of the world…fiber is very important.

3. Wet Wipes - Zombies blood, guts and ooze can be very hard to wash off your freshly sweaty skin. Keep these handy

for cleaning up after your brush with death.

4. Water- Since you’re gonna be running, jumping, climbing, and screaming all day long, you’ll probably need more than

the average few sips from a fountain. Bring extra and keep it stashed away from the other hoarding survivors.

5. Bandana- There will be plenty of rotting flesh and stinky odors around, you may want to sprinkle some of your favor-

ite cologne on it and wrap it around your face.

Preschool AthleticsGreat Beginnings Youth ClinicsDid you know that studies have shown 49% of kids under 10 do not have the basic motor skills they need to compete in or-ganized youth sports programs? This result often leads to frus-tration, embarrassment and fear that cause over 70% of young athletes to drop out of organized sports by age 13. To combat this problem, Roanoke County has developed a program designed to help prepare children for the challenges of organized sports in a non-threatening atmosphere, without the worry of competition.

The program, Great Beginnings, is a five week instructional pro-gram targeted to preschool and Kindergarten aged boys and girls with little to no organized sports experience. Under the supervi-sion of trained coaches, this program helps parents to work to-gether with their children to learn how to properly teach the basic motor skills that are needed for team sports. Using progressive skill stations, children are challenged to learn both fundamentals and new techniques. Active parent participation required.

Bill Gordge Gives Back to the ValleyBy Scott Ramsburg

If you’ve ever hiked a public trail in the Roanoke Valley, chances are Bill Gordge had a hand in its creation. He’s been building

trails for over 30 years - in places like Reed Mountain, Green Hill Park, Poor Mountain, Four Gorge, Grassy Hill and the Appalachian Trail.

Bill has always had a passion for outdoor recreation. He got his start volunteering with the Appalachian Trail club in the 1960’s. When he approached retirement from his career as a pediatrician, Bill began by taking Wednesdays off. He started a mid-week hik-ing group with some retired and semi-retired friends, but it quick-ly turned into a working group. When the greenways movement began in the Roanoke Valley during the 1990’s, Bill was asked to serve the Pathfinders for Greenways organization as the volunteer and trail maintenance coordinator. He still serves in that capacity, and his Wednesday afternoon trail crew still meets every week.

“Bill easily puts in between 20-40 hours a week as a volunteer, and has been doing it since the greenway program started in 1995,” says Roanoke Valley Greenways Coordinator Liz Belcher. “Not only does he supervise the building crews, but he examines routes for feasibility. He walks them and comes back with notes. He explores possible options and works on right of way. For every day the crew works he is there a couple of days before for assessment and flagging.”

Bill knows better than anyone how much work goes on behind the scenes to make possible what seems like a simple path through the woods. He says that a one mile stretch of trail can take as much as a year. Right of way access, land contours, scenic overlooks, aesthetics, proper drainage, and long-term sustainabil-ity are all factors that must be considered prior to the first shovel of dirt. “I think once a trail is in, you take it for granted,” says Bill. “It may take a whole day to get a stump out of the trail. We’ll re-

Trail LegacyBill Gordge stands at the trailhead of

his favorite Roanoke County hiking spot, which he helped to create!

member it, but people whizzing by later aren’t going to have any idea the sweat and tears that went into removing it. There’s a lot of effort. You take rough woods and clear it, and it looks entirely different.”

In January, Bill and the Wednesday trail crew were recognized by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation for their work at Poor Mountain Natural Preserve. This summer, Bill was honored again by receiving the Cox Conserves Heroes Award. Going up against heroes from throughout Virginia, Bill received the most votes for his lifetime of service, and he was awarded $10,000 to donate to the charity of his choice. No surprise, the check was presented to Pathfinders for Greenways, to continue the trail building effort.

At age 85, Bill believes there is no end in sight to his community service, as long as he is physically able. Liz Belcher notes that Bill approaches trail building with much of the same zeal with which he approached his medical career, serving five generations in the Roanoke Valley.

“Bill is a doer, a mentor, a friend, a visionary, and he really under-stands the importance of the outdoors to people’s wellness... Get-ting people outside. He makes it possible by building trails to get them out there.”

Many more generations of Roanoke Valley residents will likely be served through the efforts of volunteers like Bill and his Wednes-day trail crew. It’s a legacy he can truly be proud of.

“Every trail we build has got a story,” says Bill. “We have loved de-veloping every one of them. It’s great to be able to do it and work it through to completion. Then to see people on it... It’s just won-derful!”.

By Scott Ramsburg

Trip leader Erin O’Donnell knows what it’s like to be a novice ski-er. In fact, just five years ago she didn’t know how to ski at all.

In middle-school she twice attempted downhill skiing, but hated every minute of it.

Then in her senior year of college, Erin participated in a program called National Outdoor Leadership School. Suddenly, she found herself with a group of twelve students and three instructors in the mountains of Wyoming in February. For three weeks, skis were her only method of transportation. “It was really interesting be-ing 8,000 or 9,000 feet up where it’s negative 20 degrees outside. It gives you a whole new perspective on winter. You realize how much the human body can adapt to.”

At first, Erin was intimidated by the experience. Most of the other members of her group had more winter weather training. Through team work and perseverance, Erin made it through 12 nights of sleeping in snow shelters - like igloos, but made out of snow instead of ice.

“Being with a group provides you with support, especially when you try something new and intimidating. It’s nice having some-one you could joke around with at the end of the day and cook dinner together, and laugh about all the difficult things we ac-complished. Like climbing 2,000 feet on skis, or going down some sweet runs.”

Erin was also thankful for a group of fantastic instructors who helped give her confidence in her abilities. Now she is an outdoor recreation professional at Camp Roanoke, and prides herself in creating a positive environment for her program participants. Erin is one of several Roanoke County staff members leading a cross country skiing getaway in late January.

Far from the grueling heights of Montana, this beginner level expe-dition will take participants to beautiful White Grass, West Virginia. Since cross country skiing requires real snow rather than artificial

Group SkiingJoin Camp Roanoke staff on an exciting ski trip in January.

powder, White Grass is one of the few places in the Mid-Atlantic that can boast quality cross-country trails. It’s located at a high-enough elevation to receive 160 inches of snow annually.

Unlike Erin, you’ll be traveling with a group of novice skiers. Your trip guides have a combined 20 years of experience in winter rec-reation. Not only does a group trip save money, but provides you with a great new way to make friends. Cross country skiing is a lot like hiking in that it gives you plenty of time to talk, enjoy the scenery and get to know your fellow participants.

At the end of the day, when you’re all gathered around the fire, the goal is for everyone in the group to look back on the experi-ence as both positive and memorable. According to Erin, much of that experience comes from having a good trip leader. “The key to being a good instructor is knowing how to read your group,” says Erin. “Knowing when to take a break. We’re here to have fun, not overexert ourselves. It’s nice to know someone is there to help you through it.”.

How Guides Shape Your Experience

Cross Country Skiing GetawayThere is no better way to experience the breathtaking beauty of West Virginia’s snow-covered mountains than by cross country skiing right through them. This winter getaway is a great oppor-tunity to learn the basics of cross country skiing and to explore the natural wonders of our neighbor to the west. We will begin the journey on Friday, where we will head up to WV and get settled for the weekend. Saturday, we’ll start with an early breakfast and immediately after, hit the trails. We will head to town for dinner and relaxation that evening. Sunday, we will again spend the day skiing. As the day winds down, we will enjoy a final meal, then head home. The fee includes ski rentals, ski lessons, accommoda-tions, transportation, two breakfasts, two lunches, and one dinner. Please bring money for dinner on Friday and Sunday. Registra-tion ends on Jan 13, 2014, so make sure to save your spot!
