Vision

Antioch is a desired destination in the Bay Area:

Building on our historic legacy, creating bright opportunities for families to grow, offering

places to play, enabling businesses to thrive and cultivating a unique downtown experience.

Dear Friends,We have always known that parks are essential. We have always known that recreation programs and activities contribute to active lifestyles and we have always known that community events build civic pride. This year—2020—we discovered just how important parks and recreation is to the Antioch community.

The COVID public health crisis has challenged the best of us! Through it all, your parks and recreation staff has been amazing. From answering resident questions to giving refunds, they did it with sincere enthusiasm for you, our families. After hours of research they developed safe and socially distant programs for youth and families. While not as robust as in previous years, this Fall Recreation Guide offers a few classes to keep you engaged. All programs have been designed with recommended safety guidelines a priority.

Look at the many self-paced programs you can do by yourself, or with your family; Coastal Clean-Up, Trails Challenge, Community Camp-Out. Unity Day is October 21st and we want everyone wearing orange to promote kindness and inclusion. Check the website to find out how you can win prizes for participating.

There is always opportunity in Antioch. Opportunity to meet new neighbors, opportunity to explore a new park, opportunity to learn outdoors. We are Antioch. We are Antioch Parks and Recreation. Be inspiring this year, and we will all be back together soon. #LoveYourParks6FeetApart

Events & Festivals—Please note:

COVID-19Traditional programs and services provided by the City of Antioch were placed on hold March 17, 2020 due to the world public health crisis. City facilities remain closed for general public use and many departments scaled back their services to keep the community and staff safe.

The Recreation Department met the challenge and provided some summer services for youth, families and seniors based on the Federal, State and County public health guidelines. Parks slowly re-opened so that residents could engage in active exercise and enjoy nature’s peaceful feeling.

Changes have been made to programs and services to meet the new public health guidelines. To slow the spread of the virus, all fall programs and services have been designed to meet the strict requirements currently in place. Here is what Antioch Recreation is doing.

•Onlyofferingprogramsthatmeetsocial distancing requirements

• Holding classes outside

• Requiring face coverings/masks

• Remaining distant from others

• Increasing daily cleaning and sanitizing

• Upgrading facilities to reduce points of touch and interaction

•Offeringon-lineregistration

• Upgrading the website to assist residents

According to the State of California, “State public health directives prohibit professional, social and community gatherings. Gatherings are defined as meetings or other events that bring together persons from multiple households at the same time for a shared or group experience in a single room, space, or place such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, large conference room, meeting hall, or other indoor or outdoor space. They pose an especially high danger of transmission and spread of COVID-19.”

COASTAL CLEANUP 2020–PROTECT YOUR HAPPY PLACE!

We are skipping the large gathering for health and safety reasons and encourage families to turn their litter collecting habits to the neighborhoods.

All water leads to the sea, and a clean ocean starts on your street. Get your household together and head out to your local park or trail to do some trash-picking. Help keep Antioch’s drains and creeks clean so that the river stays clean.

Tips for safe litter pick up:• Maintain social distance• Wear protective gloves• Wear masks or face coverings• Use trash pickers if you have some• Put litter in its place

Take a selfie during your clean up and email it to [email protected]

Coastal Cleanup Day looks a little different this year—it is every Saturday in September.

There are prizes for every family member that participates!

THE

FISH

ING CORNER

By Phil Lago, “Compy’s Grandson”

Fishing on the Delta is one of my favorite things to do any time of year. It is also a great stress relieving activity during the pandemic, you can fish solo or with your family. All along the Antioch waterfront, the San Joaquin River is holding many different fish from Bluegill, Catfish, Sturgeon, Striped Bass, and Largemouth Black Bass. Whether you have a boat, or you fish the shore, there are plenty of places to fish along the Antioch waterfront. Striped Bass fishing should be picking up right now. Swimbaits and topwater baits are hot fishing lures. Chatter Baits and hair jigs (more fishing lures) work great around the moss beds. As for Largemouth Bass keep it simple—Senkos along the tullies, or cattails. I have caught more fish on this bait than any other lure out there. As for topwater baits—whopper plopper, frogs and buzz baits are great in the early to mid-morning. Good luck and stay safe out there!

“Compy” Compomizzo started the “Hooked on Fishing, Not Drugs” fishing program and kids fishing derby. The California Striped Bass Association, West Delta Chapter, continues that tradition and conducts a Kid’s Free Fishing Derby every year with the City of Antioch.

Rolling a ball towards a target has been a “sport” for thousands of years and in modern times, Italy is considered the beginning of what we know today as Bocce Ball. Antioch has been playing Bocce since the early 1970s and in 1987 residents Rocco Battaglia and Nick Rodriguez (former Antioch Mayor) formed the Antioch Bocce Federation (ABF). The group’s home base is in Chichibu Park where community volunteers have been maintaining the courts and the complex since they started.

Antioch Bocce Federation isoneof“fivefamilies”thatmake up the Contra Costa Bocce Championshps; joining Pittsburg, Martinez, Concord and Crockett for season bragging rights. Nearly 600 people participate in the Antioch program, which typically runs from April to late August. Teams consist of 6 to 10 people and all teams play 42 games during the season. The object of the game is to get the red or green game balls (which are a bit larger than a softball) as close to the pallino, or target ball (slightly larger than a golfball), as possible. Game balls closest to the pallino score.

Look for new “intro to bocce” programsofferedbytheABFand the Recreation Department in the future. Bocce is easy to learn and is a lot of fun. The game has no restrictions on age, so the whole family can play. For many Antioch families, the sport has been passed down from parents to children.

Play is something people of all ages have been doing for centuries. How people play is always changing! There are trends in outdoor games and activities, improvements to playground structures, and of course increased access for all abilities. The Worth Shaw Sports Complex enjoyed a much-neededupgradetotheoutfieldturfearlierthisyear,and Chichibu Park will welcome a new playground later this fall.

HEALTHY TRAIL TIPS

Wear the right shoes. Hiking boots aren’t necessary, but a comfortable pair of athletic shoes are recommended.

Due to the many local microclimates, dressing in layers is best. A walk that starts in cloudy, chilly weather may end under clear skies and temperatures in the 90’s.

Bring a full water bottle and drink before, during and after your hike.

On warm days, avoid hiking mid-day when temperatures are high.

Wear sunscreen even on overcast days.

Stretch before beginning your hike or start out slowly to allow for proper warm up. Know your abilities limits and don’t overexert.

Old Ranch Loop TrailParking is located at the Antioch Community Park Parking Lot, located off of James Donlon Blvd. Access the trailhead by heading west, past the softball fields. Trail highlights include a scenic loop that features views of a reservoir, delta and neighboring golf course.

Old Homestead Loop TrailParking is located on Frederickson Lane, approximately .5 miles off of Golf Club Road. Pick up the trailhead from the parking lot. This beautiful trail takes hikers, bikers and even horseback riders through Black Diamond Mines Regional Park. Along this moderate loop, you will

find cows, wildflowers, and a gorgeous view of the delta once you reach the ridge. Please note that there are several steep inclines and the trail can get muddy after rain.

Antioch Marina & Dow Wetlands Preserve LoopParking is located at the Antioch Marina Parking Lot. Pick up the trailhead from here and explore the banks of the San Joaquin River, vast marshlands and over 470 acres of undeveloped land. The trail includes many benches with views of the delta. The 5.5-mile trail will take you through the wetlands and various bodies of water before looping back to the Marina Parking Lot.

FALL 2020 | Burrowing Owl Habitat Preserve & Disc Golf

24 | Opportunity is for everyone here.

This tiny ground dwelling bird loves Antioch

because of the dry, open grasslands they

can find in parks and hillsides, as well as

places like the golf course or trails. The

burrowing owl is federally protected by

the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the U.S.

and Mexico and is listed as endangered in

California. To help the owls thrive, Prewett

Community Park has a 24-acre Burrowing

Owl Habitat Preserve which functions as a

year-round refuge for all wildlife. Visitors to

the preserve also enjoy some of the best

views of the Mt. Diablo foothills.

Burrowing owls primarily feed on insects

and small mammals, but they will also eat

reptiles and amphibians. Burrowing Owls

hunt while walking or running across the

ground and by swooping down from a perch

or hover, and they will catch insects from

the air. The best time to observe the owls

is at dawn or dusk. The males can often be

observed standing in front of the burrows,

especially during the breeding season.

Burrowing owls are one of the smallest

owls in North America, standing tall at

less than 10 inches. They have long legs,

a short tail, bright yellow eyes, white

eyebrows and brown spotted feathers.

Next time you are out for a walk keep your

eyes open for this cutie!

(Athene cunicularia)

The Other Golf — Disc Golf! Antioch boasts a disc golf course with the best views and wide-open spaces for all levels of play, whether you are a first-time or seasoned player. Located in Prewett Community Park, the 9-hole disc golf course was designed and installed by a dedicated group of players that wanted to give others the opportunity to play. If you can fling a “frisbee” you can play disc golf. There is no fee to drop in and play, give it a try!
