#5. Are You at Risk for Stroke?

June is Stroke Awareness Month. HSE's Health Promotion Programs invites you to sign up to a free stroke information seminar and get the answers to questions including: What is stroke? What are the warning signs? Can I prevent one? What are the effects of stroke? How can I help a loved one living with stroke?

Description: "More than 50,000 strokes and 75,000 heart attacks occur every year. Sadly, one in three deaths in Canada are due to heart disease and stroke. Stroke is a medical emergency. Recognizing and responding immediately to the warning signs of stroke by calling 9-1-1 or your local emergency number can significantly improve survival and recovery" -Heart and Stroke Foundation.

At this workshop you will learn factual and practical information about recognizing and responding to the warning signs and how you can prevent suffering from stroke.

4. Bike to Work Week

The Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition (VACC) presents Bike to Work Week: May 26 - June 1. Bike to Work Week is a great way to encourage new people to try biking to work and to celebrate biking to work with those that already do. During Bike to Work Week visit the VACC at commuter stations - celebratory pit stops along bike routes - where you can join the VACC, enjoy free food & drinks, get a free bike map, get your bike checked by a mechanic, and enter to win fabulous prizes. Heinz Lehmann AwardFor Outstanding Contributions to Neuropsychopharmacology

The Heinz Lehmann Award is designed to recognize outstanding contributions by a single individual in the field ofresearch in neuropsychopharmacology in Canada. The Award consists of $5,000 research prize, a $2,000 travel award forthe recipient to attend the CCNP Annual Meeting and a suitably engraved plaque. The Heinz Lehmann Award shall bepresented annually for work done primarily in Canada by Canadian scientists, unless there is, in the view of the AwardsCommittee, no qualified nominee.

Eligibility shall include individuals from academic institutions, foundations, governmental, industrial and researchorganizations, regardless of age or sex. The decision of the Awards Committee shall be based on originality anduniqueness of approach to clinical or laboratory research that had led to new, significant neuropsychopharmacologicalknowledge of concepts, or to the development of new therapeutic agents for the treatment of mental diseases. This shouldbe evidenced by contributions based either on a specific piece of research or on a large body ofneuropsychopharmacological research done over a period of years. The Awardee is expected to give a lecture based onhis/her research at the Annual Meeting of the CCNP, and to contribute a manuscript, based on the lecture, to the CCNPofficial journal, the Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience, no later than six months after the lecture.

The Innovations in Neuropsychopharmacology Research Award is designed to recognize innovative research inneuropsychopharmacology. The Award consists of $5,000 and a suitably engraved plaque. Young Investigator AwardFor Outstanding Contributions to Neuropsychopharmacology by a Young Investigator

The Young Investigator Award is designed to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of research inneuropsychopharmacology by an individual young basic scientist or clinical investigator in Canada. Applications will bejudged primarily on the basis of the candidate’s work as an independent investigator. The Award consists of a $2,500bursary plus a $2,000 research grant and a suitably engraved plaque. The Young Investigator Award shall be presentedannually for work done primarily in Canada by Canadian scientists, unless there is, in the view of the Awards Committee,no qualified nominee.

The major selection criterion is that the candidate be actively engaged in high quality neuropsychopharmacologicalresearch in Canada. There is no restriction concerning the field in which nominees have obtained their doctoral degree,but not more than ten years should have elapsed since the completion of their post-doctoral training (for example, PhD orresidency) by July of the year of presentation. It is not required that the candidates be members of the College or have anacademic appointment. The Awardee is expected to give a lecture based on his/her research at the Annual Meeting of theCCNP, and to contribute a manuscript, based on the lecture, to the CCNP official journal, the Journal of Psychiatry &Neuroscience, no later than six months after the lecture.
