President’s Report

As most recorder-playing activity takes place in small self-organized groups rather than

in mass meetings, I suggested last year that these individual groups should send us a summary of their activities to be included in the Annual Report. In the March newsletter we had something about the Time Out group and the Rangitoto Ensemble, but, possibly because we didn’t remind you, we have no more group news to record for the AGM. We know, however, that there is a good deal of playing going on, because the Librarians report an increase in borrowing from our comprehensive library collection. I must record our thanks to Jessica, who has housed the library in her house for quite a few years, and to Dawn Manley, who assists her in processing requests for borrowing. The running of the library is probably our most important activity as a Society. We held a successful playing day in Auckland in July at the very convenient venue of St John the Baptist Church, Northcote. Groups were tutored by Jessica Shaw and Thomas Warren. Thanks again to Dawn for her organization of this event and for her work on the newsletter in conjunction with our Secretary Andrew Stewart who, like all secretaries, is the person who really keeps everything running. It is pleasing to note that at the end of last year we received some publicity in ‘The Aucklander’, with an article by a journalist who was exploring some of the more ‘unusual’ listings on the Auckland City Council’s list of local societies. As a result we have had some enquiries from people interested in renewing an acquaintance with recorders. The committee is investigating ways of celebrating the Society’s 60th anniversary in 2013. As always, we would welcome suggestions from members about anything we might do to help their involvement in and enjoyment of recorder playing.

Strathean Weekend

The annual early music event was held at Strathean, at Te Horo (an hour north of Wellington), on October 5 & 6, and again it proved to be as enjoyable as ever. Organized for REMU by the two Rons, and with Katrin Eickhorst at the helm, I arrived in the midst of a group playing session. Hugs all round to friends not seen for a year, then I joined in with the playing. Great to be playing with a large group again. Saturday brought new faces, and with them new instruments. Bob, as always, brings an interesting assortment, but as some were using this occasion as a chance for the Medieval Band to gather and practice for a forthcoming engagement we were in for a special treat. We were introduced to the Symphony (an early Hurdygurdy which is beautiful as an accompaniment for solo voice), and the real dragon slayer called a Nyckleharpa, which is an intermediate transition between the hurdy-gurdy and the violin. [Look it up on Wikipaedia- there is lots of good information on it]. Along with an absolutely stunning hurdy-gurdy, rauschfife, shawms, Lancashire pipes, etc there was a feast of instruments to see and hear. Breathing sessions, group playing, smaller consort playing – all were eagerly undertaken with varying degrees of competency [for a good laugh play the 3rd of Eccles’ An Evening of Chaconnes (s.a.t.b.)]. A special time for a quintet of harpsichord, two treble recorders, baroque cello, and oboe d’amore – all at a=415. Sunday brought more small and large group playing, culminating with Gabrielli Canzonas. Because of the smaller-than-usual attendance we played one with two choirs of 4. Always a thrill. After more hugs all round it was home-again-home-again but without the jiggidijig. The horses pulling the charabanc d’audi are very smooth these days. The Strathean weekend is always an enjoyable event, where one can escape the rigors of normal life and disappear into a dreamland for a couple of days. Talk arose of making it a three-night event next year – could be a good idea. Eldon Peters

Time Out Ensemble

The Time Out Ensemble has had a busy month with concerts at Howick Historical Village, Dominion Road School, New Lynn School, Starship Hospital and Blockhouse Bay Library. At the two school concerts children joined with the ensemble - singing and playing percussion with the group. Here are three photos from Time Out’s concert at Howick Historical Village:

Playing at Fort Takapuna

On November 18th at Fort Takapuna Narrow Neck beach, the Rangitoto Ensemble group had the unusual experience of playing in a bunker built in1896-1899 in readiness for a threatened Russian invasion. The crowd who had come to see the outdoor sculptors were drawn into the nearby bunker by the recorder music which floated upwards through the long twisting tunnels to the paddocks along the coastline – many people lingered to listen and watch as we played several movements from Handel’s Water Music Suite No.1 and Vivaldi’s Sinfonia.
