New Rack Jobbers MeetMftrs. At NARM July 2.8CHICAGO - The Mid -Year

Meeting and Person -to -PersonSales Conference of the NationalAssociation of Record Merchan-disers, Inc., will convene at theSheraton -Chicago Hotel Tues-day, July 28.

At the Board of Directorsmeeting on Monday, July 27, itwas announced by Jules Mala-mud, NARM Executive Director,11 applications for RegularMembership in NARM will bepresented for approval. This isthe largest number of recordmerchandisers ever to apply formembership in NARM, at onetime. The 11 companies whohave filed applications are thosewho were invited to attend theNARM Convention this pastApril in Miami Beach, as ob-servers. They were so impressedwith the operation of the asso-ciation and with the association'sdedication to the interests ofthe record merchandising seg-ment of the industry, that theyimmediately filed for member-ship at the beginning of theassociation's fiscal year. Thenew rack jobber members willbe included in the Person -to -Person appointment scheduleswith the manufacturers.

The Person -to -Person SalesConference sessions, which willbe preceded by an OpeningLuncheon for all Regular andAssociate (manufacturer) mem-bers of NARM, will begin Tues-day afternoon, July 28. The 20 -minute appointments betweeneach rack jobber and each manu-facturer at the Mid -Year Meet-ing have been set up accordingto a pre -arranged schedulewhich each manufacturer whohas registered for the Mid -YearMeeting will receive in advanceof the meeting. The Person -to -

Person Sales Conference ses-sions, now in their fourth yearof existence, is a highlight ofthe association year for manyof the Regular and AssociateMembers. Manufacturers in at-tendance include Columbia Rec-ords, RCA Victor Records, Capi-tol Records, Decca Records,Mercury Records, Dot Records,Epic Records, Warner Brothers,Reprise Records, Liberty Rec-ords, MGM/Verve R e c o r d s,Cameo Parkway Records, ColpixRecords, Disneyland Records andLondon Records.

The Mid -Year Meeting isstrictly business, and the timingof it this year, will enable themanufacturers, many of whomhave just completed their dis-tributor -sales meetings, to pre-sent their fall and holiday pro-grams and product to the rackmerchandisers.

TALKIN' BOUT YOU (Progressive, BMI)

THE ANIIIALS-MGM 13264.

The Animals have this one in thenumber one spot on English chartsthese days. The reason why is appar-ent after one listen. The intensity ofthe slice is undeniable as it is lead byrelentlessly driving organ and guitarwork.

I'LL SET MY LOVE TO MUSIC(E. B. Marks, BMI)

VOGLIO BENE AL MONDO (E. B. Marks, BMI)

IriLF A-4 Corners 105.

Milva is an Italian songbird who hasa robustness and purity in her voicethat is most reminiscent of a JaneMorgan sound. Her song is the themefrom "Mondo Cane #2"-a melodythat many may find prettier than"More" from "Mondo Cane #1."

BECAUSE (Ivy, ASCAP)THEME WITHOUT A NAME (Beechwood, BMI)

THE DA1E GL1RK FII E-Epic 5-9704.

This Dave Clark outing is slowerthan what has gone before, but it's apretty one and an attractive one. Theboys sing directly and the ingratiatingsound should parley itself into bigsales once more. The flip is anotherextremely pretty Clark tune, an instru-mental.

AND I LOVE HER (Unart, BMI)IF I FELL (Unart, BMI)

THE BEATLES-Gapitol 5235.

The Beatles go through two of theslower tunes from their new screentuner, "A Hard Day's Night." Ofcourse, the ditties are by John Lennonand Paul McCartney and they incor-porate the L-McC trademarks of soft, subtle harmonies and simple lyrics.

WHEN YOU COME TO SCHOOL(B. F. Wood, ASCAP)

I'M GOING STEADY WITH A MEMORY(Mills, ASCAP)

MADDY HILL-Columbia 4-13088.

Maddy is given one of the prettiesttunes of the summer here. It's aboutlove lasting after the end of the sum-mer months. The arrangement is mel-low and banjoey. Teens will know ex-actly what this one is about.

I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU (Jobete, BMI)

BRENDA HOLLOWAY-Tamla 54099.

Brenda puts dynamism into her ren-dition of this strong song. The orches-tration is economical and allows thethrush to show off her vocal abilities.Ballad is a good one and will mean muchto the success of the side.

A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME (Diplomat, ASCAP)YOU'LL NEVER GET TO HEAVEN (IF YOU

BREAK MY HEART) (Jac, ASCAP)

DIONNE 11 IRII K-Scepter 13&2.

Dionne follows her "Walk on By"smash with a side that is, if anything, better than its predecessor. The tuneis the powerful title ditty from theincoming "House Is Not A Home"flick. Thrush wails forcefully. She also(toes extremely well on the flip, a softand pretty thing.

A HARD DAY'S NIGHT (Unart, BMI)CARRIBE (Record Songs, ASCAP)

Emm it LIGHT ANDTHE LIGHT BRIGADE-Command 40450.

Enoch and the Brigade climb aboardthe Beatle bandwagon. The full ork-emphasis on the brass-tune swingsalong with a lot of drive and shouldget attention from all areas. Big bandfans, Beatle fans and fans of just plaingood music will like.

STAY AWAKE (Wonderland, BMI)A SPOONFUL OF SUGAR (Wonderland, BMI)

L01 IS P11111.4-Prima 1018.

Louis does a pair of the tunes fromWalt Disney's "Mary Poppins" film. The top side was a lullaby when tune -smiths Robert and Richard Shermanpenned it, but Louis changes all thatinto a raucous fun -for -all.

MOZAMBIQUE (Paris, ASCAP)HAUNTED HOUSE BLUES (Showboat, ASCAP)

THE PILLAGE STOMPERS-Epic 5-95702.

The Stompers have a razzmatazz tunethat sounds as if it could be geographi-cally located somewhere between Ethi-opia and Dixie. There's a touch of theexotic and more than a touch of South-land jazz. Will have listeners marchingaround gaily.

A SPOONFUL OF SUGAR (Wonderland, BMI)FEED THE BIRDS (Wonderland, BMI)

MARY MARTIN AND THE DO -RE -MICHILDREN'S CHORUS-Kapp 605.

Mary Martin lends her purity andjoie de vivre to this tune from the"Mary Poppins" pis. The song is aimedfor the kids, but all Mary Martin fanswill relish her particular singing tal-ents. The other side is also from theDisney film.

(Leeds, ASCAP)

THE !I/WI ELLES-World Artists 1025.

ME JAPANESE BOY I LOVE YOU (Jac, ASCAP)EVERYONE BUT ME (Unart, BMI)

BOBBY GOLDSBORO-United Artists 672.

Bobby has a quiet little Oriental -styletune that can boast an exceptional me-lodic line. The story is cute and alto-gether appealing. It's about a Japaneseromance and should catch listeners' fan-cies. Bobby sings it gently and sensi-tively.

ANGELITO (Epps -Gil, BMI)LATIN VILLAGE (Exotica, ASCAP)

MARTIN DENNY-Liberty 55717.Martin turns his baton to "Angelito"

LET ME GET CLOSE TO YOU(Screen Gems -Columbia, BMI)

THE FACE OF A CLOWN (Moss Rose, BMI)

SKEETER DAVIS-RCA Victor 47-8397.

Skeeter is multitracked and joinedby a chorus for this one that has aningratiatingly syncopated beat and acute lyric. The melody is also invitingand should help make this anotherbead in her strand of hits.

P. S. I LOVE YOU (Commanders, ASCAP)SINCERELY (Arc, BMI)

THE PLATTERS-Mercury 72305.

The Platters revive this great one andgive it their personal touch which is justabout all it takes to produce a terrificside. The orchestra plays right alongwith the magnitude of the session.Could do it again for song and singers.

PEARLY WHITE (Fred Rose, BMI)FOGGY RIVER (Milene, ASCAP)

ALLE.1 CURTIS-Hickory 1268.

(Blue Grass, BMI)

BOBBY DOYLE THREE-Towne House 112.

The Bobby Doyle Trio has an ex-tremely pleasant sound which is totallyingratiating on this mild rhythm num-ber. They chant about not feeling badif love goes wrong. The advice is framedin a nice tune and could do well for thethreesome.

MISSISSIPPI *%??**&% (Sam Fox, ASCAP)SEA LION WOMAN (Sam Fox, ASCAP)

NINA SIMONE-Philips 40216.

Nina moves right along on this tunewhich has to do mostly with civil rightsand couldn't be more topical. The infec-tious tune is likely to carry this oneright to the top. A powerhouse of con-troversy-the real title of which is "Mis-sissippi Goddam "

THE MOST IMPORTANT JAll ALBUMOF 1964/65

CHET BAKER-Colpix 476.

Chet's back and Colpix has got him.And that's quite a coup. After a longwax absence he shows now that he haslost none of his sensitivity and he hasmastered the fluegel horn. The pure, soulful, deeply felt music will involve

ing his voice like a substitute horn.

JENNIE

JENA IE SMITH-Dot 3586.

Jennie's pure voice sounds mightyfine on a dozen Steve Allen tunes.Thrush is known mostly through herassociation with the Allen TVer, butthis album will get her more attention. She sells the songs and the disk shouldsell as well.

SUMMER SURF

DICK DALE AND HIS DEL-TONES-

Capitol 2111.Dick has some more surf sounds for

his fans. His distinctive tones and waywith the music fad will attract ad-mirers. Sometimes he sings and some-times he just plays, but all the bandsare exciting either way. "Never onSunday" is probably the best knowntune included.

TONIGHT AT NOON

CHARLIE MINGUS-Atlantic 1416.

Mingus goes through five of his owncompositions here and the resultantsound is a curious mixture of contem-porary jazz and contemporary classicalmusic. The musical lines are unique andfascinating. So are some of the titles, like "Passions of a Woman Loved."

KEEP ON PUSHING

THE 111PRESMONS-Alit. Paramount 493.

The Impressions make a good one onthis album on which they mix themoods up successfully. They do theircurrent high -riding single and add anumber of other rockin' ditties. "TheTheme from 'Lilies of the Field'" is oneof the songs that gets red carpet treat-ment.

The Play Is The Thing Again:RCA Has 'Othello,' Col 'Roses'

BY DAVE FINKLE(Ed. note: Last week "RecordWorld" examined the potentialBroadway musical caster scene.Events this week have drama-tized the growing importance ofthe spoken word caster. The fol-lowing article explores the devel-opments and potential of thelatter field).

Acquisition of the recordingrights to two of the most no-table theatrical productions ofthe just -completed season servedlast week to underscore the in-creasing importance the spokenword disk plays in the busi-ness. Activity surrounding thesewing up of such album rightsrecalls the excitement gener-ated when sales potential ofmusical comedy albums wasfirst being exploited.

The two new acquisitions arethe much acclaimed LaurenceOlivier London production ofShakespeare's "Othello," whichwill come from RCA Red Seal, and the "sleeper" of the Broad-way dramatic season, "TheSubject Was Roses," which willbe a Columbia three -disk re-lease.

The significance of the"Othello" pacting is in the factthat the rights probably cameextremely high (although theannouncement mentioned nosale price), since bidding onthe rights was reportedly andinevitably very strong. Furthersignificance was added byRCA's Veep and General Man-ager, George R. Marek, in an-nouncing recording plans. Hesaid, "We are proud to be re-leasing it (`Othello') and willwork to see that this is only abeginning of our re-entry intothe dramatic field." The three -LP disk is slated for releasenext month.

(RCA recorded Olivier anumber of years back doingspeeches from "Hamlet" and"Henry V"-two of Olivier'saccoladed film productions ofShakespeare. Label also re-leased a complete "RichardIII," starring Sir Laurence. Inaddition, John Gielgud recordeda complete "Hamlet" for thelabel and the Old Vic recorded"Macbeth." The Olivier "Othello," inwhich the famed actor essayedthe role of the Moor for thefirst time and won unparalleledpersonal praise, is part of hisNational Theater repertoire andwas staged in conjunction withthe Shakespeare 400th anniver-sary. More than likely the pro-duction will be brought to theStates - an eventuality thatcould only aid sales on theRCA disks.

Col's signing of "The SubjectWas Roses," was announced byprexy Goddard Lieberson andcan be understood as Col's con-tinuing desire to be connectedwith the prestige productionsof the year whether immediatesales success is indicated or no."TSWR," is the season's biggestsucces d'estime but not yetsucces de box office.

By and starring relative un-knowns, the play opened on theMain Stem late in May, anotoriously chancy time for astraight play to raise its preemcurtain. Although the three -character show received thebest reviews of the season fora dramatic offering, there wastalk of closing the showquickly because of poor boxoffice response. The play hasstuck it out, however andweekly grosses have been gain-ing continually.

The waxing of the Frank D.Gilroy opus caps off a year inwhich Col was more active onthe spoken word front that it

George R. Marek

was on the muscial comedy one-certainly an indication of thechanging times.

Label's straight outings in-clude Richard Burton's "Ham-let" (at 79 on Record World'schart this week), Alec Guin-ness' "Dylan," "Spoon RiverAnthology" and off -Broadway's"In White America."

Time PaymentsThe Col philosophy, offered

by company's Robert Burr in arecent Record World interview, seems to be that the word diskadditions to the catalog willmore often than not pay off intime, and in the meantime theslower moving items will bebuoyed up by the immediatesuccesses.

The potential of these al-bums, it is becoming increas-ingly clear, because of thenames connected with themand the tie-in exposure' can beunlimited. Burton's "Hamlet"is a case in point. His lauded

The Word Is Spoken Wordisks

performance and popularity forperipheral reasons spelled initialsuccess for the album, but themarket has even widened moresince then. Recently the JohnGielgud modern dress produc-tion was filmed for wide spreaddistribution by Warner Bros.meaning that many more buy-ers will be exposed to the offer-ing. (There's talk at Col of aone -record "Hamlet"-mainlysoliloquies - to accompany re-lease of the film.)

Not only the company, butstar Burton must be happy atthese prospects, because theactor has a substantial cut ofthe album and stands to makea tidy sum. The financial boonfor the actor able to commandpercentage of the disk willprobably lure other actors toBroadway and the recordingscene. And, of course, thebigger the names on the pack-age, the better the chance ofbig money sales.

Col's future activities are in-definite, but there is strongreason to believe that the labelwill tie down rights to ArthurMiller's "After the Fall," withJason Robards Jr., BarbaraLoden and the other LincolnCenter repertory members.

It was recently announcedthat Carlo Ponti has bought"After the Fall" for filming tostart in 1965 with Sophia Lorenand Paul Newman starred. In

this case, the added draw ofthe stars might even bringabout a soundtrack version ofthe Miller play.

It certainly can't be ruledout as unlikely that there willbe a tracker of Col's successful"Who's Afraid of VirginiaWoolf?" package. Although thecast for the upcoming "Woolf"pic has yet to be announced,it's certain that the stars willbe big ones (Bette Davis?) andeven more likely to mean diskboxoffice than the Broadwayversion, with these names addedto the reputation of the Albeeplay and the increased ex-posure. So why not take advan-tage?

An original cast album of aBroadway musical followed bya soundtrack of its eventualfilm is a matter of course now. Therefore, it's highly possiblethat that pattern will soonbe established for successfulstraight plays as well.

Soundtracks for films with-out a Broadway cast fore-runner may also become athing. Next month RCA willrelease a one -disk package ofdialogues from the RichardBurton -Peter O'Toole film,"Becket." And it's almost cer-tain that a spoken word album(as well as a musical sound-track) of UA's "Greatest StoryEver Told" will be released. The film is due for Christmas

opening. And what about some-thing like "Night of theIguana," which features notonly Richard Burton but Deb-orah Kerr's greatly praisedperformance?

With momentum gaining thereis no stopping the recording ofall types of stage or screenproductions. One area that isyet to be explored (with theexception of Capitol's two "Be-yond the Fringe" disks) iscomedy.

Humor a ProblemThe prohibitive element so

far is the visual aspect ofhumor, which though a prob-lem in transferring drama towax, is more easily surmountedthere. Usage of recognizableprop sounds (notice photo fromthe "Roses" session) helps tocreate the atmosphere andstimulate the listener's imagi-nation. And there seems to beless demand for rewrites.Edward Albee, according toColumbia spokesmen, needed tochange very little for the "Vir-ginia Woolf" sessions.

But it's in rewriting that theanswer to the whole problemlies, and that's probably whatwill be happening shortly. Theopportunities are too good topass up. For instance, it's wellknown that Neil Simon's com-edy smash, "Barefoot in thePark," was offered to manycompanies for recording, butseemed an unwise prospect be-cause of the heavy reliance onvisual humor.

Nonetheless, comedy writerSimon was also praised for thesteady flow of gags in the play.If he were able to translate thevisual facets of the play intosome kind of auditory equiv-alent, there would be a highlysaleable product. The show'sfame would certainly make itas marketable a product as anyof the dramatic presentationson wax-probably more so ifthe record sales ran in propor-tion to the show's box officereceipts.

It's reasonable to suspectthat record companies will de-cide to give this rewriting a try(maybe with a hefty fee forthe author's rewrites)-if notwith "Barefoot," with some-thing else. Everything's fairgame.

The Beatles' Hard Day'sNight' An Easy Success

BY DOUG McCLELLANDOkay, the wiseacres say, the

United Artists Records sound-track album from "A HardDay's Night" is one of the all-time smashes, and The Beatles'Capitol singles from their firstfeature film are soaring; buthow good can the movie be?

Very, that's how.The Beatles were unique-

still are, despite the similarlygimmicky groups that continueto emerge from Britain andother locales-so it is only fit-ting that their movie should beunique, too. Which it is, inspades, a melding of Europe'sNew Wave filmmaking with SamKatzman's quickie Americanfilm production, plus more thana smattering of TV's Huntley -Brinkley Report.

Virtuoso CameraworkFor here is the gray, often

dizzyingly virtuoso cameraworkindigenous to nouvelle vagueries ;the let's - get - it - out -before -thesmoke -clears scripting of aKatzman opus; and the expertdocumentary -like reporting ofan H -B effort. Indeed, alongwith the undeniable amiabilityof The Beatles (forgive themfor such recurrent referencesto people as "swine" and"clean"-the later a Liverpud-lian colloquialism?), the majordistinction of "A Hard Day'sNight" as moviemaking is thesuperb pace sustained by direc-tor Richard Lester and thedexterity and flair with which

cinematographer Gilbert Taylorliterally composes each scene.Together, they capture on filmwhat surely was not in thepractically non-existent script. The barely controllable frenzyof fan adoration was neverbetter staged for a featuremovie (if it was staged), not inthe Presley heyday, not in theSinatra years, not even in Val -lee's time. It's all here on filmfor the ages and incredulousLate, Late Show eyes of theyear 2000.

The important thing, though,is that the boys seem to beworth all the trouble. John, thefather -image of the group;George, the no -image yet, un-fortunately, but likeably soft -sell nevertheless; and Paul, fullof Irish rebellion and thepranks of the Little People.Ringo, for whom the wordfloppy was invented, who isthe most winning two -leggedlapdog in captivity, deserves atleast a sentence or two of hisawn. He has a wonderful wall-to-wall smile he is too shyabout using, and while every-thing on his face is wrong, somehow it all comes out-Barbra Streisand should for-give me-right. Actually theleast facile actor of the four,he has something innate whichthe other three have to sweatfor: he has the audience withhim regardless. Viewers will letthe others go off and shift forthemselves and miss but hardlyworry about them; but they'renot sure a roaming Ringo willbe safe, Ringo of the childlikefascination for costume jewelryand the quizzical cocked -headlook of a mutt.

And in "A Hard Day's Night,"which (with probably less plotthan any full-length, allegedly"story" film ever made) detailsa few hours in the lives ofThe Beatles as they preparefor and perform on a TV showin England, audiences shouldworry about Ringo-but notfor long. Thinking his fellowBeatles mistreat him and takehim for granted, he wandersoff for a series of innocent in-cognito adventures which even-tually land him in jail. Buthe's not alone long: he's joinedthere by Wilfrid Brambell, atrouble -making, dotty old duf-fer who is also Paul McCart-ney's grandfather (in the filmonly).

Brambell gets co-star billing, incidentally, and almost as

CAPERSIt's The Market, Not The Record

BY TED RANDALIf you've talked to a record manufacturer or promotion man

recently you're familiar with his plaintive cry about how badbusiness is. However, in the same complaining breath it is notunlikely that he mentioned his plug record had already sold15,000 in Detroit or some other city of equal importance. Thoughhis sad tale may sound contradictory to the unseasoned ear, let'sface it, the singles record business just "ain't what it usedto be."

We all know that sales are down. That being the ease, whyis it that certain records seem to sell large amounts consistentlyin some areas? Or are all the fantastic figures we hear nothingbut hypes? In most cases I have found the figures quoted to berelatively accurate, so the key to the inconsistency has to bein the cities themselves. You may be able to get a better pictureof the situation if you will think carefully about the followingtheory:

The amount of single records sold in any given area isdirectly proportionate to the effort that must be expendedby any one radio station to acquire or keep the dominantratings in that area.

In other words, in those markets where there is a strong com-petitive struggle between two or more radio stations for thenumber one position, records are still selling well; in less com-petitive markets, single sales have fallen off considerably. Thereason for this is simple. Struggling stations sell records becauserecords are a station's basic weapons. In this battle the one whohas the best weapons and is the most skillful in displaying themto an audience wins their favor. If there is no battle the gladi-ators lose their skill, and the audience loses interest in even theprettiest weapons. What conclusion can be drawn? Start a fight, and you'll sell some records.

NEW YORK-The reappoint-ment, under a new contract, ofArnold Shaw as General Pro-fessional Manager of Edward B.Marks Music Corp. and itsaffiliated companies has been an-nounced by Herbert E. Marks,President. Shaw has been withthe 70 -year -old BMI pubberysince 1955.

In the years of his incumbenceas head of the pop department, the firm has acquired a reputa-tion for aggressiveness and ver-satility that has more than keptone of the country's oldest andmost respected companies upamong the leading pop houses.(It currently has a c & w chart -climber in Johnny Cash's diskof "The Ballad of Ira Hayes"and has racked up a total ofmore than 470 different record-ings during the first six monthsof this year). Without losingcontact with the rock 'n' rollmarket - "Tell Laura I LoveHer" was a hit for Ray Peter-son, "`Wonderful! Wonderful !"for the Tymes, and "Hotel Hap-piness" for Brook Benton-Marks Music has been able inthe past three years to makestrong inroads in the show field, television and motion pictures.

Last year's hits included the"Mondo Cane" Theme, "More,"Academy Award contender, win-ner of a Grammy as the "BestInstrumental Theme" and al-ready established as a standardwith more than 80 different re-corded versions. Two other pic-ture scores handled by Marksin '63 were "Women of theWorld" and Federico Fellini's

much footage as The Beatlesthemselves. He's a game cootbut also a bit of a forced fruit-cake after a while. The Londonpress compared the lads to TheMarx Brothers in this picture,a not entirely odious compari-son. (And in which case Bram-bell could be called a sort offoil for The Beatles a la Mar-garet Dumont, that grand dow-ager ravaged time after timeby Groucho.) Particularly re-mindful of the Marxes is JohnLennon when, in Groucho-likefashion, he tells a showgirl, "Ican get you on the stage," andshe replies, "Oh, where!", andhe embraces her saying, "Outthis door, turn left . . ." AndRingo, disguised in an over-size, Harpo-like coat, when hetakes it off and drops it overa mud puddle for an approach-ing pretty who smiles grate-fully and, of course, falls inup to her lacquer. There isalso a "silents" type sequence

itont page 181in which the boys frolic madlyon a field (aided by jerking, speeded -up camerwork) whichis going to be praised.

This is the picture, too, which asks the question, "Areyou a mod or a rocker?", towhich Ringo answers, "I'm amocker."

Biggest complaint: TheBeatles' thick Liverpool accentsare hard to understand evenwithout the squealing that issure to accompany showings ofthis Walter Shenson produc-tion for United Artists when itopens in August.

"A Hard Day's Night," aidedby liberal sprinklings of zestyMcCartney & Lennon -pennedsongs, is a brisk 83 minuteslong, giving adults little timefor criticism of any nature andshould also keep children en-thralled. But it's the teens, mostly, who, in the words ofa suporting player, will find thefilm "fab and all the otherpimply hyperboles."

Arnold Shaw"81/2," winner of the AcademyAward as "Best Foreign Film."Up-and-coming film scores in-clude "Mondo Cane #2,""Venere Imperiale" (starringGina Lollobrigida and StephenBoyd), "II Pelo Mel Mondo"and "I Malamondo."

In the TV field, in '63 Markspublished the Kenyon Hopkinsmusic for the award -winningseries "East Side/West Side",starring George C. Scott.Through a deal negotiated byShaw, Marks will also publishand promote the Dave Brubeckmusic for the new Garson Kaninseries "Mr. Broadway."

The Marks' calendar of fallshow scores includes the Alex-ander Cohen production of"Baker Street," starring IngaSwenson and Fritz Weaver.

Col's 'Summer Stock' PromoStars B'way's Jack Cassidy

By DOUG McCLELLAND

NEW YORK-Nostalgia is avery merchandiseable commod-ity in show biz nowadays whenmany believe the good old dayswere really the good old days. And singer -actor Jack Cassidyis a major force in the trend.

Cassidy recently scored onBroadway as the 1930s shopsharpie in the musical "SheLoves Me"; is currently playinga '30s movie idol opposite CarolBurnett in "Fade Out - FadeIn" on Broadway; and ColumbiaRecords has just re -packaged,re -channeled (in stereo) and re-released Cassidy's six speciallyrecorded LP presentations offamous old Broadway shows-most of them, coincidentally, also from the '30s, and each a"must" in show buffs' libraries.

Or maybe it's not all so co-incidental; for Cassidy is amusical comedy leading man inthe grand tradition, handsome, debonair, vocally superior andblessed with a personal eleganceand style the like of which hastoo long been downtrodden bythe swing-or stagger-to "nat-uralism" on both the dramaticand musical stage. Almost single-handedly, Cassidy is sneakingcharm and grace back into thetheater; and his finesse comesacross on wax, too, as provedby his six show album re-pack-agings now out as part of Co-lumbia's "Summer Stock" LPpromotion, which includes thelabel's entire hefty catalog ofnoted stage and screen packages.

Singer -Actor Gives Rave ReviewsTo Lieberson's Producing Skill

"Up until now," Cassidy toldRecord World last week in hisMark Hellinger Theater dress-ing room, "these six albumshave been rather 'inside', evencollectors' items. 'The BoysFrom Syracuse,' for instance, was being sold in some storesfor $25 not long ago. At thetime I mentioned to GoddardLieberson, who produced themall, that it would be a good ideato re-release them, and he saidthey'd be good Christmas pack-ages. But I see they're in theSummer Stock issue, and doingwell.

"The thing that's makingthese albums sell, besides thegreat material, is the tenderloving care Goddard put intothem. He ad libbed many of thearrangements, you know, saying`This is the kind of a feeling Iwant . . .' His knowledge andtaste are impeccable. It is cer-tainly rare for a record companyexecutive to have the musicalcomedy savvy that Goddard has."

Cassidy said he'd love to domore albums like "Babes inArms," with Mary Martin; "OhKay!", "On Your Toes," "Ro-berta," "Brigadoon," with hiswife, cinemasongstress ShirleyJones, and "Boys From Syra-cuse." His bouquet to Columbiaprexy Lieberson won't hurt hischances to do so. He particularlywould like to do such as "ByJupiter," "Du Barry Was aLady," "50,000,000 Frenchmen"and "The New Yorkers." "Thesongs in those days were eachpearls, with the book sand-wiched in between. Today, thebook is all-important and themusic secondary."

Cassidy's voice has changeda bit from the time he recordedthe first of the lucky six,"Babes in Arms." "I was a realhigh tenor then," he recalled."They didn't want a big, boom-ing voice, and I had the light-ness they needed for the seriesGoddard was planning. Now I'ma lyric baritone. Of the oldershows, I guess I favor 'Oh,Kay!' Actually, though, I likewhat I did on 'Brigadoon' thebest of all.

" 'Brigadoon' was the last ofthe show series to be recorded-Shirley and I did it the yearafter we were married, in '57,and I like to think it was partlyresponsible for the City Centerrevival of the show which wasso successful it moved over to

Broadway."Shirley and I didn't do

`Brigadoon' together, incidental-ly. She was on the Coast doinga movie at the time. I did mysection here, she did hers there."

Cassidy enjoys his role in theCarol Burnett show (and, audio -wise, likes the ABC -Paramountcaster of it over the two -diskMGM recording of "She LovesMe," although "She Loves Me"is his favorite Broadway role). But he'd like to chuck the time-consuming grind of a play for aTV series. He has two prospectslined up, both comedy offerings.

"One thing to stay away fromin a TV series is show businessovertones. Remember the IdaLupino-Howard Duff series,`Mr. Adams and Eve?' It was so`inside.' The Dick Van DykeShow' takes a show biz premiseand turns it outside to make itwork. I think the best situationcomedy series on TV was the oldPhil Silvers -Sgt. Bilko series, and I'd like to do a kind ofcivilian Bilko in my show. Mycharacter would always comeup with an angle, but he wouldhave to lose-be a winning loser.I'm too slick, I've got to be out-rageous, larger than life. I'mattracted to the theatrical, butlife doesn't have the theatrics of

Day Club Review

Glenda GraingerAt RoundtableNEW YORK-Glender Grain-

ger, a new thrush from GreatBritain, was introduced totradesters of all kinds in aunique way last week. Glenda'smanagers, Lennie Miller andManny Wells, wisely decidedthat the hest way to present anew night club personality torecording execs, press agentsand the press was in a nightclub atmosphere.

Therefore, they rented TheRoundtable for an afternoon, wined and dined the inviteesand then brought out the tal-ented songstress. The showcas-ing was well conceived andwell executed.

Londoner Glenda has donemost of her work in Spanish-speaking countries, strangelyenough, and has also managedto pick up a number of otherlanguages, making her a singerequipped to deal easily with awide range of material. Actwriters Sherry Cloth and BillyCosta exploited her ability inthese areas with rewarding re-sults.

Glenda sang in English(straight and Cockney), FrenchItalian and Spanish and herrepertoire went from the wellknown to the little known-alldone with the appropriate emo-tional qualities. Hers is a fin-ished act, slickly fashioned andworthy of exposure.

Representatives of many rec-ord companies were present, and a contract is probably inthe offering.

Cap Beatles LP 'Something New'HOLLYWOOD - "Something

New," Capitol's third Beatlealbum which goes on sale Mon-day, July 20, is one LP that livesup to its name.

Six of the tunes in the albumhave never before been releasedin the U.S. They were recordedby The Beatles after they com-pleted their first film, "A HardDay's Night" (Capitol releasedthe title as a single last weekand sales have already surpassedthe million mark.)

According to Stanley M. Gor-tikov, President, Capitol RecordsDistributing Corp. (CRDC) thepre-release sale for the album"has been fantastic." Over ahalf -million have been shippedto Districts throughout thecountry and orders have keptthe Scranton and Los Angelesplants working to capacity. Inaddition, Capitol has severaloutside sources pressing thedisk.

"The initial demand has beenamazing," Gortikov said. "Ithas demonstrated that dealershave as much enthusiasm todayas they did six months ago whenwe put out the first Beatle al-bum."

Gortikov attributed much ofthe excitement for the album toThe Beatles forthcoming tourand UA picture which couldmake "Something New" one ofthe biggest selling LPs in Capi-tol's history.

"There's also the fact," headded, "that this album isn'tjust a package with a new jacketsurrounded by old tunes."

Among the 11 songs on thealbum is the German version of"Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand,"better known to the U.S. recordbuyer as "I Want to Hold YourHand," the first Beatle singlereleased by Capitol. All of thesongs in the LP are Lennon -McCartney compositions withthe exception of "Slow Down"and "Matchbox."

Capitol will follow the releaseof "Something New" with twomore Beatle singles this month-"And I Love Her" (on theflip side is "If I Fell") and "I'llCry Instead" ("I'm Happy JustTo Dance With You"). Both arefrom the UA picture. This willbring the number of Beatlesingles released by Capitol thismonth to three.

Atlantic, Atco Enjoy Hot SpellNEW YORK - Atlantic and

Atco Records and the summerweather have something in com-mon-they are all hot.

The heat at Atlantic and Atcois being generated by a numberof fast moving singles and al-bums. In less than five weeksthe Atlantic disking of "UnderThe Boardwalk" by The Driftershas moved up into the top 15best-selling records in the coun-try. Many sources have reportedit as one of the three or fourfastest moving records in thenation. On the Atco label TheBeatles newly released single of"Ain't She Sweet" took on theappearance of a blockbuster atthe moment of its appearancehaving sold a quarter of a mil-lion copies in less than a week'stime.

A flock of other singles onthe Atlantic label have beenpulling strong sales, headed bySolomon Burke's "EverybodyNeeds Somebody To Love," CarlaThomas's "I've Got No Time ToLose," "Jamaica Ska" by theSka Kings and "Soul Dressing"by Booker T. and The MGs onthe Stax label, which is distrib-uted by Atlantic.

Besides The Beatles release,Atco sales are getting a bigboost from Bent Fabric's "Goo-fus." Nino Tempo and AprilStevens "I Surrender Dear" and"Who" has also caught the fancyof record buyers, as well as Otis

Redding's "Security" on theVolt label-distributed by Atco.

In commenting upon the broadsingles sales activity of Atlanticand Atco, Len Sachs, Directorof Album Sales and Merchan-dising, stated that "the 20 newalbums we released recentlyhave also stirred a great deal ofsales excitement among distrib-utors and dealers. Many distrib-utors who bought liberal quan-tities of these albums when weintroduced them at our annualdistributors' meetings have dis-covered they didn't buy enough.Even before these albums wereshown to many of their dealers, distributors found it necessaryto re -order substantial quanti-ties of the new LPs to covertheir first round of orders."

The strongest selling packageson the Atlantic label are "OurBiggest Hits" by The Drifters,Solomon Burke's "Rock 'N Soul,""The Ray Charles Story" (Vol-ume 4), "The Greatest Hits ofRay Charles" (in 8 -Track Ster-eo), Hank Crawford's "TrueBlue," "Sonny Stitt Plays Bird,""John Coltrane's Sound" andCarmen McCrae's "Bittersweet"LP on the Atlantic -distributedFocus.

By ED HAMILTONThings have actually let up a little-but not much-on the

production scene here. Just a lull in the storm that still loomsbrightly on the business horizon. But it does give all the studiomusicians a chance to get in some time on the lake for a littleboating or fishing-or trading cars-or buying more real estate!Speaking of trading cars, Mercury's Jerry Kennedy is hoppingaround town in a solid white Continental Convertible-and boy, does he like it! Seems like he and Billy Willis have been at itagain-trading cars.

Actress Patty McCormack of "Bad Seed" fame is scheduledfor recording sessions here in the near future. Name of label wasnot available at press time.

Epic's Music City Producer, Billy Sherrill, and artist StanHitchcock were in Miami last week for that label's convention.Stan is rising high right now on his current release, "Old Bad."Also conventioning last week was Decca's Owen Bradley, inLos Angeles for a sales meeting; and Decca's Harry Silversteinin Chicago for the same type get-together. Columbia's Don Lawand Frank Jones spent the last few days in Las Vegas for theColumbia confab. ABC Paramount's Felton Jarvis in Florence,Ala., for sessions with a new group from Florida. Felton saysthey're "super -terrific!" Mercury's Jimmy Clanton is due in forsessions under the direction of Jerry Kennedy this week.Jerry was very busy last week with Pete Drake sessions. Pete'sgoing strong right now with his follow-up to "Forever"-"I'mSorry," the old Brenda Lee smash. Over at RCA Victor,Porter Wagoner's doing a blue -grass album and Hank Cochranis getting ready to do an album of some of the big hits he'swritten. He could do three or four albums! Ronnie Self-thesong writing-Self-has signed with Fred Foster's Monumentlabel and set for sessions this week. MGM's Jim Vienneau wasin town last week for split session with Merle Kilgore and writerGlenn Sutton. Also on hand to see that things came off OKwas Al Gallico in from New York. Former Music City-ite BuzzCason was in last week for a brief visit on his way back to theCoast from England where he's been touring with The Crickets.

RIC is excited over Ruby Wright's newie "Dern Ya," theanswer to "Dang Me."

Well, it finally happened. Regent Music's Bob Tubert andDecca's Demitriss Tapp got their long-awaited release! It camein the form of a big boy-they labeled him Devin Shawn-andwhat a day for him to come-the same day Bob got the wordthat the next Brenda Lee single would be one he wrote! How'sthat for happiness coming in bunches-or bundles? Both momand dad are doing fine.

Congratulations of another sort to Chuck Chellman, formerNational Promotional Director of Country & Western Music forMercury. Chuck's moved over to Don Pierce's Starday firm asNational Sales and Promotion Director. He certainly won't bea stranger to the country jocks because during his Mercurytenure he really let 'em know he was in the business. Keepup the good work Chuck!

Congrats To . . .

Columbia's Ed Price for a great new single in "I Don'tKnow Why" . . . Also to Pamper Music's Fred Carter fora great song: Victor's Bobby Bare -"He Was A FriendOf Mine" . . Decca's Bill Phillips for "Stepping Out" . . .

Columbia's Claude King and what in the "Sam Hill" is goingon here . . . Decca's lovely Linda Flanagan for "Mama KissThe Hurt Away" . . . Smash's Roger Miller for his first No. 1record after all these years . . . And to Record World's BobAustin for making it safely through all those conventions.

A parting word this week to all country and western jocks. We really appreciate your charts each week. Whether you knowit or not, those charts have a lot to do with what you see chart -wise in our magazine. We try to get a good sampling of what'shappening, record -wise, through what's played by you guys andwhat the dealers and distributors are selling. So, like I said,we 'preciate it. Keep 'em coming.

Classics: What Sells

NY's Record Hunter Makes Offbeat Up-;Double Exposure Via Mail Order, Promo

NEW YORK-How does thedealer who wants to sell productover price compete with the bigdiscount houses, many of whichoffer enticing price reductionson leading items to create traf-fic? A dramatic answer is foundin the manifold operations ofshops like New York's RecordHunter.

The Record Hunter, and storeslike it, compete with the bigdiscounter by offering tremen-dous catalog spread. Well over10,000 titles on classics aloneare carried by the store. Butbesides this fabulous catalogspread, the Record Hunter makesit easy for consumers to buythe records of their choice. Thestore is staffed with experts inevery field: popular, jazz andwithin classics: Baroque, Vien-nese Classical, Romantic, PostRomantic, Opera, Lieder, Mod-ern 20th Century.

New Release BrowsersRecords are where consumers

can examine them minutely. Atthe front of the store, sixbrowsers are devoted to NewReleases. Browsers are oppositethe cash register, and you canbet that many impulse sales aremade from these browsers.

The Record Hunter, located at42nd Street and Fifth Avenue, gets the transient trade but alsoenjoys a steady clientele. TheHunter's steady customers gravi-tate to the New Release browsersas soon as they enter the store. Also up front is a rack withbest-sellers. Last week they werefeaturing such items as "HelloDolly," Bernstein's "Kaddish,"the Beatles soundtrack album,"Funny Girl" and "HighSpirits."

The 5th Ave. WindowThe Hunter uses its big Fifth

Avenue window to bring in cus-tomers. Every two weeks thewindow is changed. Last weekit was dominated by a big spreadof Deutsche Grammophon al-bums. The Hunter was thenoffering two D.G.G.s at $2.98each (or two for the price ofone.) The sale did well. Thisweek their window features abatch of recently reinstatedAllegro recordings at $1.98 perdisk.

And hereby lies the secret ofthe Record Hunter's success. They realize the record businessis a promotional business, andthat unless you can offer thepublic something unique in the

The Shop That Made Big BizOut of Discontinued Concert

Hall, MGM, Haydn Society LPsway of product and/or promo- hadn't been available for years.tional sales, you're dead. Kaufmann's recording of Viv-

aldi's Four Seasons (one of theLive Wires Schott, Maggid earliest LP recordings of this

popular work) started the Viv-aldi revival on LP and also soldvery well. The sale was so suc-cessful Maggid located a press-ing plant that had the ConcertHall masters and had them re-press top -moving selections onthe Hunter's own "Record Rari-ties" label. This second shipmentsold for $1.49 to $1.97 and didvery well.

Too many dealers are not pro-motion conscious. The RecordHunter is because they are ex-tremely fortunate in having twolive -wires: buyer Curt Schottwho continually shops manufac-turers for deals (as most buyersdo). And Jerry ,Maggid, who'sin charge of the Hunter's vastmail order business. Jerry turnssow's ears into silk purses byreviving discontinued merchan-dise (most of the time at aprice), drawing dyed-in-the-wool collectors like honeydraws flies. The Hunter beginsits campaign with an ad in theNew York Times, usually writ-ten by Maggid. The promotionalmerchandise is featured in thewindow for the first weeks ofthe sale. Supporting displaysand browsers in the store followthrough the window's alluringcome-on.

Gold in Cut OutsThe Record Hunter turned de-

letions into gold when theybought out a stock of ConcertHalls from the manufacturer at600 per disk a few years ago. They sold them at 990 per.

"I never saw anything likeit," said Maggid. "The ad ranin the New York Times musicsection on Sunday and by Tues-day we'd sold out the entire5,000."

Some had the original ConcertHall label, others the Crowell -Collier label (which had pur-chased many masters from Con-cert Hall for an ill-fated clubventure).

Off -Beat SellersWhat sold? The series of early

Mozart Symphonies conductedby Ackermann, recordings ofthe Pascal Quartet, the HummelPiano Concerto (with ArturBalsam), the "Ruins of Athens"by Beethoven (at that time theonly complete recording) ; Bee-thoven's oratorio: "Christ on theMount of Olives" (also an onlyrecording at that time) ; theBeethoven Piano Quartets, writ-ten when he was 15 years old,and other off -beat items that

"The MGMs Are Here!"With the success of the Con-

cert Hall deletions still fresh,Maggid shopped around forother deleted catalogs. He con-tacted Ed Cole who had put to-gether MGM's classical catalogand managed, after a long hasslewith MGM, to get an order ofmany prized items. They arrivedin plain white jackets with asee-through hole for the label.Maggid refused to accept themunless MGM supplied regularjackets. They compromised.MGM came up with jacketswhich were blank on one sideand bore the notes on the other.

Consumer response was enthu-siastic. Pull from the direct mailpiece was excellent. Among topmovers were the only recordingsof works by Kurt Weill (manyrarely heard chamber pieces) ;the John Field Piano Concertoby Sondra Bianca (Field, anIrish contemporary of Chopin, wrote a beautifully melodiousconcerto in the big romantictradition) ; Schubert's "Death ofLazarus"; a Rachmaninoff PianoSonata; the music of the modernAmerican composer Alan Hov-haness; and Weill's "JohnnyJohnson." This would have beena smash but the Hunter couldn'tget enough from MGM.

"Now," says Maggid, "every-body has the MGMs and we'reclosing them out at $1.88 per."But the sale was a success evenat the $3.50 per Hunter pricebecause of their promotion.

. . . And Haydn SocietyThe Hunter was the first to

bring back Haydn Society on anexclusive basis. For over twoyears they sold items like the

Curt SchottRecord Hunter Buyer

Haydn Quartets by the SchneiderQuartet; early and middleHaydn Symphonies by Woldike,Sternberg, etc., like there wasno tomorrow. The famous three -record collection of "Music Be-fore 1750" which featured manyoutstanding Danish musiciansand was accompanied by a textbook, published by Norton, alsosold very well.

Vox BoxesBoth Schott and Maggid agree

that Vox Boxes are tremendoustraffic makers with sales of wellover 50,000 per year. In fact,Vox was so impressed with theHunter's volume, they printed amailing piece at their expensewhich the Hunter is currentlymailing out to over 30,000 sub-scribers.

Vox is a promotional line. Aset of 3 LPs (a Vox Box) sup-posedly lists for $9.95 - TheHunter sells it for $4.49. TheVox Twins (two -record sets)list at $6.95. The Hunter sellsthem for $3.49. Vox has intro-duced two new series recently. The Vox Opera sets (a threeLP set that lists for $9.95) sellsat $5.95 at the Hunter. A two -record Vox Lieder set that listsfor $6.95, the Hunter sells for$4.49. Slightly higher prices onthe Opera and Lieder sets aredue to the bigger name artistson these recordings.

By far the biggest line arethe three -record Vox Boxes. What sells: oratorios by Bach;complete sets of Concerti Grossiby Vivaldi; Sandor playing Bar-tok; Novaes playing Chopin;three volumes of Mozart PianoConcerti featuring names likeNovaes, Haebler, Kraus. Alsothe Mozart operas "Marriage ofFigaro" and "Don Giovanni"with names like Stich -Randall,Danco and Moffo in the casts, etc.

Currently the Hunter is run-ning an "Under $2.00" sale inthe mail and in the store. Thisincludes the brilliant Baroquemusic recordings on the None-such label; RCA's Victrola andCamden series; Columbia's Har-

mony; London's Richmond; therecently revived Allegros (withnames like Hoffman, Schumann,Segovia), and off -beat items likePurcell's opera "The FairyQueen" and the remainder ofthe Hunter's Concert Hall re -pressings.

Mailings that GuideFrom their experience, Schott

and Maggid know you can sellmany things through the mailyou can't give away in the store. And the Hunter's mailing pieces, prepared by Maggid, are thereasons for this success.

A Record Hunter mailing (sixof them go out every year toan average of 35,000 people) isa feast for the eye and the ear.Maggid breaks down categoriesof music within labels. A classicexample of this was a recentbrochure which offered, for thefirst time, a complete catalog ofthe various imported recordingsavailable from EMI. Maggidprovided a key of labels at thebeginning indicating what coun-try each came from. Each labelwas broken down by category(opera, vocal, symphonies, his-toric recordings, etc. and listedalphabetically by composer). The list was so good Capitolasked Maggid to run off an ad-ditional quantity for their ownsales force.

Imports, Piano Rolls, GobermanThese EMI imports which list

for $5.98/$6.98 each were soldin this mailing piece $4.79(mono) and $5.49 (stereo). Thepull was surprisingly strongconsidering the high price. Piecealso included a selection of thefamous Welte Mignon PianoRoll recordings of Hoffman,Paderewski and De Pachmannat a $12.50 list. Schott reportsexcellent store sales of thesealbums and also of the MaxGoberman "Library of RecordedMasterpieces" which bear an$8.50 price tag. These deluxealbums were to have encom-passed the complete Symphoniesof Haydn conducted by Gober-man with the Vienna SymphonyOrchestra had the conductorlived. (He died last year.) Al-bums include the complete score.Label also includes many only -recordings of Vivaldi Concerticonducted by Goberman.

While Goberman was alive theseries was only available throughthe mail, but the Hunter got achance to sell them because ofthe excellent trade they've builtup with school and college li-braries throughout the U.S.

For Schools and CollegesBiggest mailing of the year

is the Hunter's 96 -page "Institu-tional Order Book" which is across section of all Hunter mail-ings for the year. The Huntersells space to manufacturers. Each listing is prefaced witha few paragraphs which outlinethe items of interest in eachcatalog. Every off -beat item theHunter can offer is here as wellas representative lists by majorcompanies.

"We do an enormous businesswith small school and collegelibraries who despair of findingrecordings on labels like: Com-posers Recordings, Inc; Con-noisseur Society, Eterna; Ex-periences Anonymes; Lyrichord;Music Guild; Urania, Vox," saysMaggid. Over 6,000 went outthis year.

Schott Minds the StoreWhile Maggid shepherds the

mailing lists, Schott shops manu-facturers for buys. The Hunterdid well with the Heifetz saleoffering his catalog at $2.49 per.Schott sets up his windows tocoincide with special offers fea-tured in the mailing pieces. Hehas several racks up front loadedwith best-selling merchandise bythe majors.

"Over 75% of our store salesare in major lines," says Schott. This isn't true of our mail order, though. When we visited thestore Columbia had a step-downrack to itself with "Hamlet,"the "Kaddish," "Camelot," thethree Streisand albums and "ToBroadway With Love." Anotherrack held Philips' "Missa Luba"(a Congolese Mass) ; their re-cordings by the Ward SwingleSingers of "Bach's GreatestHits" and "Going Baroque";RCA's "Pink Panther" and"Hello Dolly"; ABC-Paramount'snew musical hit "Fade Out, FadeIn." Another rack-aimed at thetransients and teen-agers hadThe Beatles albums on Capitol,United Artists and V -J, Epic'sDave Clark Five-"Glad AllOver," the new comedy find"Godfrey Cambridge"; and Co-lumbia's "Homage to Shake -spear" and "South Pacific."

Big Names in BrowsersBrowser boxes along the walls

contain big -name major -labelrecordings which the Hunteroffers at nominal discounts.

Col Starts MasterworkMail Club

NEW YORK-In an attemptto explore the means of expand-ing the classical record marketand guaging buyer patterns andimpulses, Columbia Records lastweek launched a new mailingclub, the Columbia MasterworksSubscription Service. The clubwas kicked off via ads in a care-fully selected group of consumermagazines, including the Satur-day Review of Literature, HighFidelity and regional editionsof Time.

The club's features include(for a fiat yearly membershipfee of five dollars) a quarterlydisk called Audition which high-lights excerpts from the newadditions to the catalog alongwith commentary by the artistsinvolved. Other enticements arethe guarantee of having any diskbought through the club re-placed for one dollar in case ofdamage or wear and the guar-antee of replacing any hi-fi diskwith a stereo version for a onedollar fee. Also for each recordbought, label supplies a freedisk of member's choice. Thereis no obligation to buy any rec-ords whatsoever.

In announcing the new club,Columbia President GoddardLieberson stated: "During thepast few years major changeshave taken place in the classicalrecord market. There has been

For instance, a complete sec-tion is devoted to violinists. Allof them: Stern, Heifetz, Mil-stein, Francescatti etc. have theirown sections (within the violincategory) indicated by dividersbearing their name.. Thesebrowsers run along the wallsfrom the front to the back ofthe shop. Naturally, the bignames are up front. The low bar-gain price merchandise, pushedso hard in the mailing pieces, islocated in the rear of the store.

One of Schott's most success-ful promotions was a "TradeIn." Consumers were allowed asliding scale of allowances ontheir LPs toward the purchaseof new LPs. Trade in allowanceswere determined by the condi-tion and rarity of the item. TheHunter built up a large selectionof out -of -print LPs which soldat premium prices to many col-lectors.

There's a gimmick a minuteat the Record Hunter, andMessrs. Schott and [Maggidknow how to keep things jump-ing. We're proud to salute thepromotion -minded Record Hun-ter. May we have more like 'emin the years to come.

NEXT WEEK: LEGACY OFTHE GREAT CONDUCTORS!

a serious decline in the numberof record retailers who carry afull line of classical product. Therapidly increasing cost of re-cording classical music has madeit impossible for most compa-nies to continue to record classi-cal repertoire. A very largevolume of business has beenachieved by low priced directmail classical record packagessuch as those made by RCAVictor for the Reader's Digestand the offerings of the Lon-gines Symphonette.

"Because of Columbia Rec-ords' basic commitment to makethe best classical music availableto the public we must continu-ously experiment with new mar-keting concepts. The ColumbiaMasterplan 55, a retail plan, isone current innovation. TheColumbia Masterworks Subscrip-tion program is the latest mar-keting test which the companyis making through the ColumbiaRecord Club. This plan containsa number of experimental con-cepts such as record insurance, audition records, a continuouslyup -dated catalog, and an annualsubscription fee entitling sub-scribers to records at a lowerprice. This test program is anextremely limited one involvinga total magazine advertising ex-penditure of $16,000. A maxi-mum of 5,000 subscribers is be-ing sought nationally and theirpurchasing patterns will be keptunder continuous research andreview. No further space adver-tising expenditure is contem-plated.

"As a result of this test,Columbia Records hopes to eval-uate these innovations and ifany of them proves to stimulatethe classical record market itwill be considered for dealer use.The object of Columbia Recordsnow, as in the past, is to exploreevery means of increasing theclassical market and therebybenefiting the public, its dealersand its artists."
