Reconnecting with Cebus Past the Historical Sites in Cebu

Magellans Cross has always been a historical symbol of Cebu. We just knew that the

original tindalo wood planted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 was encased by the wood we seeon the outside.

Basilica del Santo Nino is also a sight. We are fascinated by the fact that the church is the

result of the forced labor during the Spanish period, and that eggs are an important material in

constructing the building. It also adapted the style of Western churches. The presence of apse,

atrium, transept and vaults are typical in Romanesque and Gothic churches.

Next site that we had visited is the renovated Plaza Independencia. We discovered that a

monument is erected on this site in honor of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the first Spanish

    governor-general of the Philippines.

Inside Plaza Independencia is Fort San Pedro. We noticed ancient materials that left an

important mark in our local history. They also featured some of the leaders of the Philippines

    past government.

The Cathedral Museum features the growth of Christianity in Cebu. We knew of Cardinal

Emeritus Cardinal Vidals life. We were also amazed by the preserved letter of Mother Teresa to

the Cardinal. We also saw statues of saints made of ivory. We also took a photo of the Mercedes

Benz used by Blessed Pope John Paul II in his first visit to the Philippines. We are also

fascinated by the broken pieces of china encased. We knew that these were flushed in comfort

rooms by slaves who had accidentally broken them. We were also able to sit on royalty chairs.

Parian Monuments reflect important events in Cebu during the Spanish occupation. It

features the stand of Lapulapu against the Spaniards and the spread of Christianity by the latter.

It is also a sight that the sculptures are very large.

The Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House let us have the glimpse of what a house looks like in

the olden times. The bedroom, dining area, the living room and other parts of the house is very

typical of houses in barrios and towns in Cebu.

Casa Gorordo is also a wonderful historical sight. The structure and furniture is a

characteristic during 1521-1896. What struck us most is the presence of table for receivingsuitors. There were 3 chairsone for the guy, one for the girl, and one for the chaperone. It just

shows how the men during those times respect women. We also saw a sungka, a Chinese game

    of shells.

The last site we had visited is the Museo Sugbu. We time- traveled through Cebus

history, as we enter one room after another. We noticed tools made around the Paleolithic and

Neolithic in the Prehistoric era. We also noticed a newspaper during the Spanish period. There

are also the paper bills during the Japanese era. We enjoyed taking turns in being the President

of the Philippines in a makeshift rostrum for presidents.

Inside the Museo Sugbu is a National Museum. We saw large boulders of rock which are

used in navigating in ships during the ancient times. We also saw pure gold taken from a Filipino

    mummy.

Overall, these 9 sites indeed reconnected us to the roots of ourprovinces history.
