Joyce Murray, MP Vancouver Quadra I hope you are enjoying your summer with friends and family. I was away most of July, starting with a family reunion in Holland to celebrate the 90th birthdays of my mother-in-law Alida and her twin sister Pauline! A Parliamentary mission to Israel and the West Bank, followed by a personal visit to Egypt in the wake of the ‘Arab Spring,’ completed my trip. It was a privilege to experience first-hand the complexities of the Middle East region, the amazing warmth of the people, and the possibilities for new solutions to age-old challenges. June was also very busy with Parliament in session. I have a new set of responsibilities in Ottawa as Chair of the Liberal Party’s ‘Northern and Western Caucus’ of 17 MPs and Senators and Liberal Critic (spokesperson) for Small Business and Tourism, Asia-Pacific Gateway, and Western Economic Diversification. This portfolio provides a wealth of opportunities to connect with people and organizations that are crucial to the economic vitality of Western Canada and the quality of life of all Canadians. Joyce Murray, MPVancouver Quadra

I hope you are enjoying your summer with friends and family.

It was a privilege to experience rst-hand the complexities of the Middle East region, the amazing

warmth of the people, and the possibilities for new solutions to age-old challenges.

June was also very busy with Parliament in session. I have a new set of responsibilities in Ottawa as Chair of the Liberal Party’s ‘Northern and Western Caucus’ of 17 MPs and Senators and Liberal Critic (spokesperson) for Small Business and Tourism, Asia-Paci c Gateway, and Western Economic Diversi cation.

This portfolio provides a wealth of opportunities to connect with people

and organizations that are crucial to the economic vitality of Western Canada and the quality of life of all Canadians. More on this in next month’s letter…

Recognizing Vancouver Quadra Achievements DAICHI ISHIKAWA WINS 2011 TD SCHOLARSHIP FOR COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

Congratulations to Vancouver Quadra’s Daichi Ishikawa on receiving the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership!

Since 1995, TD has recognized some of Canada’s most exceptional young people for innovative and exceptional leadership. As one of the most prestigious and sought-after scholarships of its kind, Daichi will receive up to $70,000 to cover his tuition and living expenses.

“I truly appreciate the opportunity that this scholarship provides me — the nancial freedom to pursue a post-secondary education and enjoy the university experience to the fullest, while allowing me to contribute to the community at the same time,” said Daichi.

A local Prince of Wales Mini School student with a passion for sustainability and creating opportunities for youth, he has worked tirelessly to create actionable projects bene tting both his school

and community. Daichi founded the Prince of Wales Student Sustainability Committee and has also played an important role in 1STEP, an organization encouraging environmental stewardship and safety in the snow sports industry.

This fall he will begin his undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Arts at McGill University.

Congratulations Daichi, and good luck as you move forward to a very bright future.—Joyce Murray

Daichi hopes to one day work internationally in the Foreign Service or as a diplomat for the United Nations.
