WHAT IS BULLYING?

According to the federal government, bullying is defined with the following core elements: unwanted aggressive behavior; observed or perceived power imbalance; and repetition of behaviors or high likelihood of repetition. Bullying can be direct (e.g., bullying that occurs in the presence of a targeted individual) and indirect (e.g., bullying not directly communicated to a targeted individual such as spreading rumors). Broad categories of bullying include physical, verbal, relational (e.g., efforts to harm the reputation or relationships of the targeted individual), and damage to property. Bullying can happen in any number of places, contexts, or locations. Bullying that occurs using technology (e.g., phones,

email, chat rooms, instant messaging, and online posts) is considered electronic bullying and is viewed as a context or location. Some bullying actions

can fall into criminal categories, such as harassment, hazing, or assault (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.). Studies suggest that most senior-to-senior aggression in long term care settings is verbal abuse, and that men and women are equally likely to be the victim as well as the aggressor (Senior Bullying, 2015). However, all forms of bullying are possible.

One in two people have bullied another person at least once. Bullying is one of the biggest issues currently affecting seniors. It can be overcome if we start to think differently about how we resolve things. There are a variety of reasons why people bully others. Common examples include being bullied by somebody else, abuse, a traumatic situation or feeling competitive towards others. Many older people see their independence and sense of control disappear and, for some, becoming a bully can feel like regaining some of that lost power. To the bully, their behavior may not seem serious, but to the receiving person, the impact can be devastating. It takes a strong person to recognize bullying traits and behaviors in themselves. If you realize you’ve been hurting others, you can make a choice to stop. Change is determined by motivation. Bullying is a choice. And if you truly want to change, you need to motivate yourself to alter your choices. While we cannot force someone change, we can all teach healthy behaviors. The key is to help the bullying person recognize the pain they are causing. Consistent reminders and reinforcing a positive mindset can teach anyone to handle situations differently. We all need to respect each other and not allow anyone to feel unworthy. It’s not that hard to make everyone feel like they are an MVP!

The Season for New Beginnings!

It’s spring time! Finally! The grass is turning greener.

The trees are growing buds. The tulips are starting to

pop up! It’s the time of year when things feel fresh and

new again!

It feels like everything is new in the Health and

Wellness Department, too. We are starting lots of new

programs this spring! If you’re looking for an exercise

class, consider these options! And remember, they are

donation based, so you can contribute only when you

great workout, and also tons of fun! EnhanceFitness

classes meet 2 or 3 times per week for an hour each

time. During the class you will work on stretching,

strengthening, and balance exercises. Keeping your

body strong helps you maintain your independence.

Staying flexible helps you move about more

comfortably. And, working on balance exercises will

help you prevent falls. This class also offers about 20

minutes of cardiovascular activity in each class, helping

you safely increase your heart rate to help you stay fit!

History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in

the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

Early Observances of Memorial Day The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country ’s first national cemeteries. By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers. Did you know? Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated these memorial

gatherings. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo—which first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which

businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

From the Coordinator’s Desk

May is the month of two important and very different holidays: Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. We celebrate love, care, and often the sacrifices mothers have made for their families. Have a Happy Mother’s Day! We also celebrate our service men and women who made, and continue to make, many sacrifices that keep us free. Now it is our turn to appreciate the sacrifices they have given. If you have veterans in your life, take the time to thank them for their dedication to our country. You can also send a card or stop in at the Veterans Facility. Many have no family in the area, and your visit would be the highlight of their day. If any members have a loved one who is serving in the military, we would love to send them a card thanking them for their service. Please provide me with their address. I wish each of you a very fulfilling and happy May!
