Statistics• In 2002 illegal drug use cost Americans close to $181 billion ($129

billion in lost productivity, $16 billion in healthcare costs & $36 billion in other costs, such as efforts to stem the flow of drugs).

• In 2008, 2 million Americans age 12 and older abused inhalants.• Teenagers whose parents talk to them regularly about dangers of

drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs – 1 in 4 teens reports having these conversations.

• 8.9% of youth ages 12-17 have misused inhalants.• 1 in 5 teens have used inhalants in their lifetime.• 2 in 5 teens have used marijuana.• 15.4% of 12th graders reported using a prescription drug

nonmedically within the past year.

What to do if you think someone is using?

1. Ask them- don’t be confrontational– show concern & love– be direct– try not to be defensive– listen

2. Be specific about your concerns- Tell them what you see (signs of using), causes of concern- Explain how behavior/appearance has changed

3. Don’t make excuses

4. Set limits and consequences- Write a contract with you kids - design rules and regulations that

work for both of you- Lay down rules- Set firm consequences- Be consistent- Monitor behavior
