recognizing common gestational diabetes symptoms

Recognizing Common Gestational Diabetes Symptoms What is Gestational Diabetes? Gestational Diabetes is a condition found in pregnant women, who do not usually suffer from diabetes, and it causes their blood sugar levels to rise to a higher than normal level. This form of diabetes is most common in the 24th week of pregnancy and can cause complications for the baby and for the mother after the birth. It is caused by hormones produced by the pregnancy which stop insulin being produced or stop your body responding properly to that insulin. Most women have a very small chance of developing this condition with only around 4% of babies being born to mothers with gestational diabetes. You may be more at risk of developing diabetes during your pregnancy if you are over the age of 30; you are classified as medically obese; you have a history of diabetes in the family; you have suffered from gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy; or you suffer from high blood pressure. If your doctor or midwife thinks you are at risk of developing the condition, you will be monitored more closely during your pregnancy. What are some Common Gestational Diabetes Symptoms? Gestational diabetes can sometimes go unnoticed because there are often few to no symptoms of the condition. Some women may notice that they feel more tired, have an increased thirst or need to urinate but these are also common side effects of a normal pregnancy. Usually diabetes in pregnancy is diagnosed with a glucose tolerance test which is offered as a standard pregnancy screening test. After drinking a glucose drink, blood samples will be taken to check that your body is processing the sugar correctly. If you have had gestational diabetes before or you had borderline results at your first test, you will probably be offered another test at a later date.
