Recognition ListIVQs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (8030 – 2000)

Universities

Institutions listed in this document are a select group of UKuniversities who have confirmed their recognition of City & Guilds International Vocational Qualifications (IVQs)in Electrical and Electronic Engineering as meeting the levelof skills and knowledge required for entry to the first orsecond year of relevant undergraduate degreeprogrammes (as evidence of appropriate secondaryschool education).

Recognition means that applications from holders ofappropriate certificates will normally be considered foradmission, provided that all other academic and non-academic requirements, including their English languageproficiency, are met. Successful completion of levelsindicated below does not guarantee that a place is offeredto the applicant.

Professional organisations

Professional organisations on the list have alreadyconfirmed their recognition of City & Guilds IVQs in Electricaland Electronic Engineering for membership purposes or asgranting exemptions from certain professionalexaminations. More negotiations are under way.

Employers

IVQs are highly respected by employers as evidence ofinternational competence, and many organisations havesuccessfully used our international awards as part of theirtraining or staff development programme.

Recognitions are currently being (re)negotiated withseveral large corporations, and a separate document will list employers who believe that City & Guilds IVQs equip the workforce with the key skills and knowledge which will help them find employment or improve theircareer prospects in the industry.

The Engineering Council (UK) is the national registrationauthority for professional engineers, working inpartnership with 35 professional engineering institutions. It promotes and regulates the engineering profession inthe UK to maintain a world-class engineering workforceand a standard against which overseas professionalengineers are judged.

The Engineering Council (UK) runs the Register ofChartered Engineers, Incorporated Engineers andEngineering Technicians, and offers the EngineeringCouncil Examinations.

The exams are available at three distinct and progressivelevels (Certificate, Graduate Diploma and PostgraduateDiploma), and provide a progressive route for careerdevelopment for those who are unable or have chosen notto complete a degree programme.

Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE)Advanced Technician DiplomaTechnician Diploma

The Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) welcomesapplications for membership from holders of an AdvancedTechnician Diploma or a Technician Diploma.Subsequently, those who apply for registration with theEC(UK), Individual Case Procedure (ICP) is applied. Thisrequires that the intending registrant provides details ofthe content of the courses undertaken and theperformance or outcome attained, in each case.

A holder of a Technician Diploma is normally eligible to become a member of IIE (MIIE), and may subsequentlyregister as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) oncecompetence and commitment requirements have been satisfied.

A holder of an Advanced Technician Diploma is alsonormally eligible to become a member of IIE (MIIE), andpartially satisfies the educational base requirement forregistration as an Incorporated Engineer. A holder of thisaward who undertakes further learning - equivalent to thefinal year of a relevant Bachelor’s degree - will be eligible toregister as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), subject to ICP.A successful Professional Review of competence andcommitment is also required.

Note:Accredited qualifications do not require the holder to beassessed through ICP. However, under the terms of itslicence from the EC(UK), IIE cannot accredit qualificationsin isolation, only at the invitation of a college or Universitywhere the qualifications are delivered. Negotiations havealso started in an effort to agree a suitable set of criteria tomake the accreditation of City & Guilds IVQs much morestraightforward.
