Charity Day
CGC have donated $3500 to Melanoma WA after the inaugural Charity day on the 5th March. Thanks to our wonderful sponsors and members for supporting this
great cause.
Twenty-eight teams played in the 4 Ball Ambrose event, with many getting into the spirit of the free dress day by teeing up in
some outrageous outfits.
A massive thank you Marion Lewis, Wyn Pole and Sorine Flynn for keeping everyone well fed
with the 4 hour sausage sizzle.
Thanks to Clint Heal, the CEO and Founder of Melanoma WA and his colleague Wayne Bol-ton for talking to us about melanoma and how to reduce the risks associated with too much sun exposure. The Slip, Slop, Slap message was loud and clear with the extra message of “re-apply sunscreen after 2 hours” emphasised specifically for golfers. Check out their website
for more info;

Can Club
Can Club members had a great night at the club on Wednesday the 10th February.
Les Mayne & Jim Mercer organise this evening and get busy in the kitchen whipping up tasty treats - Jim’s fish bites are delicious. Murray & Troy were busy behind the bar keeping every-one’s thirsts quenched. The Can Club has been running for many years and allows members to redeem their donated can winnings from Tuesday and Thursday competitions. Members who want to join this fun social evening just need to accumulate a minimum of four cans to be eligible to at-tend.

Twilight Golf
The popular summer Twilight 9 hole Sta-
bleford competition is in need of new or-
ganisers for next summer as the current
team of John Cahill & Sorine Flynn are
calling it a day at the end of this season.
The last official day of Summer Twilight is
on this Friday the 18th March when the sea-
son trophies will be presented. All mem-
bers are encouraged to get down to show
your appreciation for John & Sarine’s hard work, and why not play 9 holes (from 3 o’clock)
and then enjoy a meal from the 19th Hole afterwards.
Twilight continues after Easter until the end of June so it’s a perfect way to finish the week
with a quick 9 holes, footy on the TV and the 19th Hole serving Dinner.
If you are interested in taking on the role of running twilight next summer, please talk to
John or Sorine, or Captain Duncan Scott.
Huge thank you to Sorine and John for their dedicated work in running twilight over the last
few years.

IN DA HOUSE
After a quiet relaxing New Year period we have been busy since late February, The Hosea Cup
was held Wednesday 24th Feb after school by the Catholic School Teachers followed by a BBQ
tea. Its always interesting looking at the attire of some teams. We’re still trying to work out how the
bride in full regalia swung her clubs. Her chariot was a buggy so she didn’t have to “walk down the
aisle” (fairways)
The Melanoma WA Charity day was a wonderful success with Wyn, Sorine and myself kept busy
cooking sausages and refilling the drinks bin. Coming up is the Easter Medley where we will require
helpers over the 3 days.
Thanks to everybody who has helped out with all the events and sandwich rosters recently. Special
thanks also to Helen for steam cleaning the kitchen tiles for us before the ladies Summer Cup.

Summer Cup 2016
The ladies again hosted their Annual
Summer Cup over the weekend of 12, 13 ,14
February and had 156 ladies participate.
Another successful event won by our Past
President and now Wanneroo member, Marie
Oakes.
She was delighted to receive the Cup from
Brian Fraser, representing our fantastic spon-
sor of 10 years, Retravision.
A very big thank you is extended to everyone who helped in any way to make this event such a
success. All the men volunteers who came and spotted and raked bunkers - fantastic.
I would especially like to thank Wyn Pole and Val Sawyer for their managing of the kitchen,
along with their many helpers.
The wonderful ladies of the Capel Golf Club do-
nated alcohol, money and vouchers which enabled
us to put together 21 rafflesfor the weekend - not
counting the 5 we held on the Friday, altogether
raising over $1800. Fantastic effort.
Opening Day for the Winter Season is on
Wednesday, 16th March. We look forward to
catching up with all those members who have not
ventured out during the Summer.
WEDNESDAY WONDERS

SHORT SHOTS from Piquet
Recently attended a family funeral in Perth and afterwards got talking golf to a member of
the Mosman Park Golf Club. Bill was saying Mosman had arrested the loss of older members to
the club with the introduction of a membership to the PGA - the Pensioners Golf Association, not
the other one.
The PGA provides a vehicle for members unable or unwilling to participate in the main events
to still enjoy their membership and their friendships rather than move on (an outstanding objec-
tive for all clubs).
Intending players gather each Monday and Friday at 1.30pm for 12 holes from the Ladies
tees. The PGA use a modified handicap system designed to heavily penalise the winner. If you
win one do not hold your breath on winning another.
Capel may not be there yet however it was interesting to hear how one club is addressing a
common issue, how to retain long standing members as the game becomes more and more diffi-
cult.
On the other hand initiatives such as these are becoming more common place to attract new
players, players who are unable to fit in with the traditional memberships.
FROM THE DESK
In November last year I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship from Golf Management Austral-
ia WA Division, Golf WA and Schweppes to attend the Club Managers Association of America
(CMAA) Conference in San Diego in February. The experience was one that I will remember for
the rest of my life and as a learning experience for Club Managers, there is no comparison. As a
requirement of the scholarship I will be making a presentation to all the other Club Managers at
the GMA state AGM as well as Golf WA and will submit a report the Board in the near future. I
was lucky enough to spend a day at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club and have
back of house tour of the facility during the tournament as well as play Torrey Pines in San Diego,
Primm Valley GC (middle of the California Desert), TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas (Host of a PGA
Tour event) and the Las Vegas Country Club. All magnificent courses. A couple of snippets that I
learnt along the way;
1. Las Vegas Golf Courses use recycled water
and have to pay for the use. TPC Summerlin
pays $2.7 million a year for their recycled
water.
2. Torrey Pines, host of the 2008 and 2021 US
Open, is a 36 hole public access course in San
Diego (picture right). Last year the course rec-
orded 155,000 rounds of golf which equates
to over 400 rounds per day.

Last Friday Night was the Annual WA Golf industry Awards and Dinner. The Capel Golf Club was
nominated for 3 awards;
1. REGIONAL GOLF COURSE OF THE YEAR - 2 finalists, us and Kalgoorlie. Kalgoorlie took out
the award this year after carrying out works to improve the course.
2. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - The Club nominated Tony Shearer for the award this year. Each
nominee was asked to go up on stage and receive a certificate for the efforts and the win-
ner was announced on stage with all the nominees present. Phil Ryan from Cottesloe was the
winner of the big award but Tony was very well deserving of his nomination.
3. HILARY LAWLER PGA PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR - ‘The Hilary Lawler PGA Professional of the
Year Award is designed to recognise the effort, dedication and contribution of PGA Professionals to
promoting the game of golf. It also recognises the development of programs and events for profession-
al and amateurs alike. The late Hilary Lawler was a Life Member of the PGA and the epitome of a true
PGA Professional. Hilary was a humble gentleman, who always put the interests of the game and his
customers above his own interests, whilst maintaining the respect of the Association and everyone whom
he met’ Sound like anyone we know?? The Club nominated Troy for the award this year after
his efforts the last 12 months. Troy was announced as the winner which is a tremendous ef-
fort and thoroughly deserved. Well done Troy, your presence at the Capel Golf Club has
certainly lifted the Club and we could not think of a more worthy winner.
The night was enjoyed by those who attended and Troy's speech was a highlight of the night. We
look forward to putting nominations up next year.
