Philippine center for investigative journalism Report ISSN : 1656-636x $ 6.00 [Food has always been a central part of Philippine life and culture. We eat to celebrate a birthday and to mourn a death. A fiesta is nothing without a long table groaning with food. We eat for religious reasons as well as profane ones. For us,

eating is the ultimate social lubricant: we dine as easily with new acquaintances as with long-time friends, with those we hate as much as those we love. Filipino diets, however, are changing, as convenience becomes the main consideration for choosing what to eat. Although we still prefer the salty and the sour in our food, we now want these in cans, or better and cheaper yet, plastic packs and sachets. The dietary revolution that is taking place is wreaking havoc on our health. Filipinos are fatter now, but not healthier, And the prevalence of eating-related aliments ranging from diabetes to hypertension has become a social leveler. But not all are created equal as far as food is concerned. While millions are stuffing themselves with the wrong kinds of food, millions more are going hungry, because of poverty and high food costs, more families are now subsisting on only one real meal a day. So in this sense, too, food defines what we are: a society cleaved in two, the heaves and the have nots, those who eat amid plenty and those who can barely eat.] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Minoritization of the Indigenous Communities of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago / B.R. The incidents described made the general public aware of wash sales, matched orders, market rigging or jiggling, short swing, and short sales – terms which normally only stock brokers, traders and finance men, accountants, and lawyers will be conscious of. It was an expensive education that made greed costly for some and unjustly profitable for others. In the Legislative Department, these incidents gave impetus to the enactment of the Securities Regulation Code. Respect for the rights of the majority stockholders was stressed, even as the minority was protected from oppression. The Securities and Exchange Commission was given broad, flexible powers even as governance of the stock exchange encouraged professionalism. The Code likewise stressed the responsibility of the traders, the brokers, the accountants, and the lawyers. For laws do not guarantee honest dealings; only honest people do. That probably is the lesson of the book. Out of the Lion’s Den can slaughter the lambs – or nurture the Daniels among our people.]

Uranza’s tetralogy of novels, Chronicles of the changing seasons, which is a creative rendition of the events of the last hundred years of the Philippine struggle to be free, to be truly independent, and to live in dignity and self-respect. Women of Tammuz is part of that broad fictional panorama recreated in her four novels through the eyes and heart of two families, showing with bold colorful strokes the most significant and, perhsps the most tragic moments of our history. Chronologically, Women of Tammuz is the second book of the saga, and with this novel, the four significant periods of our recent history are finally completely etched in their clearest details: the Philippine Revolution and the Philippine American War in A Passing Season; the horrors of war and the Japanese Occupation in Women of Tammuz; the evils and cruelty of a dictatorship in Bamboo in the Wind; and in Feast of the Innocents – the ‘time of freedom and democracy’- what we did with this great opportunity to make of ourselves a people proud of its integrity and freedom.

In 1997 the British Crown handed Hong Kong back to its original owners, China. Indonesia lost East Timor. And Portugal, too, relinquished its colonial hold on Macau, from where the image of our lady of piat, presumably crafted by local artisans or those from neighboring regions, journeyed to Cagayan river valley”. Thus begins Yena Ngamin : The miraculous brown Madonna of cagayan river valley. Conceived as an art book celebrating the 400th anniversary of our lady of Piat, it is still that and more: a panorama of a part of the world whose Liwan man could rival the Java man in importance. A glowing portrait of a province, a people, a country, a way of life. And an impassioned tribute to a heavenly mother whose love knows no bounds.] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sociology Culture of improvisation : Informal settlements and Slum upgrading in a Metro Manila Locality / Lou Antolihao Quezon city : Institute of Philippine Culture, Ateneo de Manila University, 2004 xii, 90 p.: ill.; 29cm.
