Messagefromthe President

Amchem continues to experience a very difficult busi-ness period. As a direct result of the recession, our Special-ty Industrial Chemical business suffered serious set-backsstarting in the fourth quarter of 1974. Opportunities in ourAgricultural Chemical business were limited because of keyraw material limitations, the agricultural economy and byreason of uniquely unfavorable weather conditions in cer-tain geographical areas. All of the costs of doing businesshave materiauy increased while our ability to pass on theseburdens through price increases has been limited by keencompetition and the recessionary economy. The year 1975will not, therefore, be a year of growth for Amchem.

We are all concerned, and disappointed-more impor-tantly, however, we are au the more determined to turn thissituation around and return to progress and growth. Theeconomy is strengthening and we have positive signs of im-provement in both MCD and ACD. We must and will "turnaround" in 1976. The most concentrated and dedicatedefforts of all wfll be required. Amchem can, and does de-pend on all of you to put forth that extra effort and toexert your full determination to the accomplishment of ourcompany goals and responsibilities. Amchem's future isyour future.

Rorer-AmchemAcquires Company

According to an announce-ment released by GordonMoyer, Vice President andTreasurer of Rorer-Amchem,the company has reached anagreement in principle with theJacques Seed Co. of Prescott,Wisconsin to acquire the latterthrough an exchange of shares.Terms of the agreement aresubject to approval by theRorer-Amchem directors.

The Jacques Seed Companyspecializes in developing andmarketing hybrid corn seedand other crop seeds and re-ports sales of over S 10 millionfor the last fiscal year. Theacquisition is expected to addnew growth potential to theagricultural business ofAmchem.

When this issue of the News went to press, the UnitedFund campaign at Amchem had just been launched. Whenreaders receive their copies in the mail, the campaign winhave been completed. Amchem, this year, conducted itsUnited Fund drive early as one of a group of pilot cam-paigns for the Philadelphia area. The Amchem goal in 1975 was S16,000, up by $1,000or almost 7% from last year. The general PhiladelphiaUnited Fund goal is $22.7 million. At Amchem, specialincentives to contribute in the form of a weekly drawingfor a Sloo aft certificate and a grand prize of an all ex-pense paid weekend for two at Tamiment in the Poconoswere introduced this year. Any contribution of at least 50cents per week for one year made the donor eligible for thedrawing.

But the biggest incentive for contributions turned out tobe the great need to be met by the United Fund and theeducational, medical, and charitable services rendered by allthe various agencies which the United Fund supports.

Eckmah Involved ihPhiladelphia United Fund

The bare bones of the an-nouncements in the Philadel-phia Inquirer and PhiladelphiaEvening Bulletin in Augustwere that the United Fund hadnamed John Eckman, presidentof Rorer-Amchem, Inc., aschairman of its rna).or em-ployee campaigns departmentfor the 1976 campaign. The an-nouncement went on to saythat the 1976 goal is $22.7 nil-lion and that the drive beginsSeptember 29, 1975. Mr. Eck-man's department is re-spousible for the largest chunkof the goal, about 40%.

Mr. Eckman talked aboutthe job in a relaxing mannerbut it didn't sound like a relax-ing job. What does he do? Well,the job is a mixture of recruit-ment, supervision, pubHcity,encouragement, diplomaticprodding, and a number ofother things including many,many meetings-meetings toset goals, chart courses, selectthemes and materials, recmitcompany representatives,launch training programs, andso on and on.

Mr. Eckman stressed twoimportant features of thisyear's campaign. First, about10 companies are serving asbellwether groups to the rest.The bellwethers include bothAmchem and Rorer and theywill conduct their campaignsearly, completing soficitationsbefore the others begiv. If allgoes well, therefore, in these10 early campaigns, results canbe used as examples to showthe remaining 350 that theirgoals can be met.

Second, he pointed out thatit has been well establishedthat in uncertain or even reces-

•sive economic times, peoplehave tended to do better intheir contributions to charity,education, and health care.National giving to all causes inboth the United States andCanada reached a record $25bfllion in 1974, a year of un-certainty. And the PhiladelphiaUnited Fund also raised moremoney last year than everbefore. The theme this year-LUCKY YOU-reflects thisidea by appealing to the indi-vidual who fe¢S a job to con-tribute to help those who areless forfunate.

Mr. Eckman has been inUnited Fund campaigning forabout the last five years andseems ready to continue. Doeshe like campaigning? Well, itmust be done. And the appealof the United Fund is to helpalleviate poverty, strengtheningthose who need help so theycan again make their own way.He feels no hesitancy in asking

for assistance or support insuch a cause. And private con-tributions seem like a muchbetter answer than interventionby government.

In addition to being presi-dent of Rorer-Amchem, Mr.Eckman is active in Philadel-phia community affairs, beinga director of the Chamber ofCommerce, the University CityScience Center, and the UrbanCoalition. He is also presidentof the board of managers ofthe Wistar Institute of Anat-omy and Biology, a director ofthe Pharmaceutical Manufac-turers Association, a directorof the Haverford School, and alife trustee and member of theexecutive board of the Univer-sity of Pennsylvania.----.--.-They WentThatlAIway

Ron Strain, Finance, set outfor Tahiti but got only as far asMargate, N.J.

Stu Reed, MCD Research,divided his time visiting agraduate student son's musicaudition in West Virginia anddepositing another son at Col-lege in Virginia.

Mrs. Jean Ffrok, Inventory,spent two weeks at Ocean City,N.J.

To any-one not famhiar with theAmchem "yard", it looks like abewildering array of drums,drums, drums, tanks, miscel-laneous equipment, and moredrums. It seems to be Brown'saim to have each pauet spaceassigned and the informationon what is there readily avail-able, even if only in his head.

Althouch the slowdown inMCD business earlier this yearhad lowered the amountssomewhat, the following fig-ures demonstrate the size ofthe receiving job done and itsgrowth. In 1954, Amchem re-ceived over 12 minion poundsof material into the plant viatruck, rail, etc. In 1964 it hadgrown to about 29 millionpounds and last year it reached68 million pounds. It's nowonder they enjoy taking acoffee break at 9:30 in themorning.

Katowice(pronounced Kat®h-weesdee),is an old mining and industrialcity of about 100,000 peopleabout 200 miles south of War-saw, and is where Jack's hotelwas located .

Every morning except Sun-day, Jack drove a rented carthe 20 miles or so fromKatowice to Tychy. There arecertain apprehensions anddownright hazards in driving acar in a foreign country whenyour visa says you "win not bedriving any car," and when youunderstand only the signpostswith international symbols, notthe ones with directions writ-ten in Polish. Jack's thumbnailguide was to go ahead if theguy in front went ahead, andstop if the guy in frontstopped, fairly reliable adviceeven in American traffic.

Arriving at the automobileplant about 8 A.M., Jack beganhelping F.S.M. engineers withthe checking and mechaniza-tion of the 16 stage washer inorder that they might have anefficient and workable piece of

ket. One of the engineers withwhom he worked spokeEnglish, and therefore becameJack's principal contact. Hisname was Andrej Stolecki andJack came to respect his abilityas an engineer and to like himpersonally. Later in the visit,Stolecki paid Jack the highcompliment of asking him tocall hin Andrej during off-work hours. During and afterwork, Polish engineers allexpect to be addressed as``Engineer," except by rela-

tives, close friends, or respec-ted acquaintances. .

Work days generally endedabout 5 P.M. but many times,the job required Jack and theengineers to stay until 11 or 12midnight. At such times Jackand a couple of the engineerswould dine together in a smalltown restaurant about 4 milesfrom Tychy, where Jack recallsthe beer was excellent. Mostevery day after work, eitherearly or late, Jack chaufferedfour workers, who normallywould take a bus, to their con-dominiums in Tychy. Theywere grateful, because the ridein the car saved them time,money, and the more ruggedbus ride.

His evenings were generallygiven over to report writing,communications with theAmchem Brussels office, andwith Ambler. Occasionauythere was tine for a short walkin the vicinity of the hotel andat other times Jack would sit inthe lobby with several English-men who also were working atthe F.S.M. plant. The hotel,called the Orbis-Silesia, wascomfortable and the food therewas excellent, though, in gener-al services, Jack likens it to theHotel Casey in Scranton, Pa.There was no air conditioningand no television. The radioworked sporadically but it isdoubtful if it could have servedas very much diversion be-cause, either the Polish lan-guage or the static emittedwere equally unintelligible toJack.

Between the hotel inKatowice and the plant inTychy, the countryside consist-ed of rolling hills and farmland.The farms were generallyworked by hand and by horse.As in most European countries,there were lots of bicyclists,young and old, men, womenand young people. Jack wasable to avoid them all with hiscar, but an occasional cyclist,tipsy from the tavern, wouldpresent some problems.

The people were friendlyand the workers co-operative.

RUDI WAGENKNECHT

Wagenknecht ElevatedOur International Division reports several promotions of

interest to Amchem people made by Henkel G.in.b.H. in Dussel-dorf, West Germany. Dr. Rudi Wagenknecht, who served for anumber of years as technical manager of the Gerhard CollardinCompany, a subsidiary of Henkel and located in Cologne, wasappointed Managing Director of Collardin. Rudi has visited Am-bler on a number of occasions and has made many friends inMCD. He is well known among our other licensees, particularly inEurope, where he has helped and advised in furtherance ofAmchem Metalworking business.

Henkel also announced the appointment of Dr. Johannes Dahsas Manager of Field Industrial Adhesives at Henkel. He previouslyhad served as Manager of Inorganic Products (Amchem)/AdhesivesDivision of Collardin.

There were no political or rehi-gious discussions because bothJack and his hosts chose not toopen either subject.

Among the minor personaldifficulties Jack reported, wasthe lack of patent medicines ordrugs for sale anywhere. Noaspirin, no Rollaids, no anti-histamines, and so forth, thatour drug stores overflow with.Polish electrical outlets are 220volts and a special adapter andplug are required for the nor-mal Ilo volt U.S. appliance.Luckily, Jack's electric razorcould operate on either voltagebut he had to buy a Polish plugwith the proper outlet fittings,clip off his own plug, and at-tach the wires of the Polishplug to his razor.

So on July 15th Jack leftWarsaw, having arrived thereon June l9th. Chief EngineerChoma of F.S.M. relayed amessage to Amchem via RayMontecino of our InternationalDivision in Brussels. He askedto express his and F.S.M.'s sin-cere thanks to Jack Campbellfor the excellent job he did atTychy. Choma said that Jackgave every minute of not onlyhis normal J2 hour workingday, but also of his privatetime in assisting them on a sub-ject they knew too little about.Choma wants Jack to visitTychy again in a year or so todiscuss extensions in the pres-ent line, expansion of produc-tion facilities, etc.

The reward of one good jobseems to be the assignment ofanother.

Rorer/Amchem com-bined sales increased 13.5% toS146,941,434 and net incomerose 9.0% to S16,018,60l orSl.15 per share versus $1.05per share for the correspondingperiod in 1974.

All divisions, however, didnot contribute to this growth.Domestic health care, inter-national health care, andAmibenTM soybean herbicidesales increased but industrialspecialty chemical sales fellwell below 1974 in the secondquarter, and for the year todate.

George Russell Honored

The certificates on the wall belong to Tom Antrobus (I) but GeorgeRussell (c) received the ``Engineer of the Year" award.

A couple of Amchem em-ployees were recently involvedin an award ceremony of theAmerican Institute of PlantEngineers, Valley Forge Chap-ter. The award was "PlantEngineer of the Year" for1975-76 and its recipient wasGeorge A. Russeu, P.E., Direc-tor of Engineering at Amchem.One of the presenters of theaward was Tom Antrobus, ofthe Amchem Engineering De-partment and a Group Din.ectorof the Valley Forge Plant Engi-neers Club.

Amchem has grown from asingle plant facility in Amblerto a large international corpo-ration, with ten manufacturingplants. From 1947 to the pres-ent, George has assisted in thisgrowth and has been deeply in-volved in the planning, erec-

tion, and operations of a num-ber of these plants. His mus-tache, dapper dress, and goodhumor are familiar to Amchempeople in Ambler, Clinton,Iowa, Fremont, California,Windsor, Ontario, Houston,Texas, and all the other loca-tions where he works.

George has been active alsoin the Valley Forge Plant Engi-neers Club, becoming its firstpresident in 1956. He hasserved as president of the Val-ley Forge Chapter of the Na-tional Society of ProfessionalEngineers and is currentlyAssistant Secretary for theLower Gwynedd TownshipMunicipal Authority. He is alsopresently serving the FirstBaptist Church of Lansdale asChurch Moderator.

Kern Named Hospital TrusteePaul R. Kern, MCD Field

Sales Manager, was recently ap-pointed by the trustees of theUniversity of Pennsylvania inPhiladelphia, to the Board ofTmstees for its Graduate Hos-pital. Graduate is one of fourhospitals now under Universitysupervision.

The objective of the newly

formed trustee board is to es-tablish Graduate Hospital ascompletely independent exceptfor a teaching affiliation withthe University. To accomplishthis objective, the board in-cludes Philadelphia area peoplewith varying talent and experi-ence, including medical, busi-ness, legal, and teaching.

A Small RetirementThe dinner for Don Small

on the evening of July 24,1975 at Steakmaster Restau-rant was out of the ordinary.Don was retiring after morethan 35 years with Amchem,almost all of it in the Agricul-tural Division FormulationLaboratory.

More than fifty friends andacquaintances gathered tomark the occasion, swap storiesand comments, and presentDon with the gift of a "new"saw, something to help keephim in good physical trim inthe days to come. RussellBishop presided in the en-forced absence of JimEsposito, who was called outof town at the last minute for

customer service. Arlene Stortihad capably supervised manyof the arrangements.

It is noteworthy that morethan a few of those gatheredwere former Amchem em-ployees who worked with Donwhile they were here. Duringspeech time, several of themjoined present employees inpaying tribute to Don. Donhimself gave some humorousand appreciative remarks. Heinvited everyone to droparound to his home at 3216Lenape Drive, Dresher, Pa.,where he intends to loaf some,work some, help bring up hisfamfly, and dispense advice toall who will receive it.
