You may imagine Zane and his colleagues strolling into a field to collect a few seed samples then conduct research in the laboratory, but their working lives a far more adventurous than this. Because plants like ryegrass, kikuyu, plantain, clover, barley and wheat, which are important to our economy, are not indigenous to NZ, seed collectors go overseas to look for seeds in the wild in places like Russia, Armenia, Cyprus and Georgia. Landmines, dangerous roads and far more basic conditions camping in small tents in the wild than normally experienced in NZ are all part of their work environment. But safeguarding seed diversity is critically important for food security as we face uncertain future in terms of climate change. This will prepare us for a visit to Margot Forde Germplasm Centre later in the year. Sunday Lunch 29 th April 12.00 Contrary to expectations is to be at Cafe Brie, in Broadway, near Victoria corner.
