Residents rebuilding homes in flood-prone areas damaged in superstorm Sandy will now have to elevate them under new building standards. Builders in Ocean and Monmouth counties have said the cost for elevating many homes can range

from $25,000 to $75,000 but there are many variables that affect cost.

The required height of elevation, the type of pre-existing foundating and whether a piling or block foundation is required can

all affect cost. In New Orleans, costs for elevating existing homes after Hurricane Katrina were reported between $40,000 and $60,000.

All enclosures under the base flood elevation level must be built to break free when hit by strong

winds or floodwaters and not damage the elevated building.
