RebuildingYour Damaged Homes

Residents rebuilding homes in flood-prone areas damaged in superstorm Sandy will now have to elevate them under new building standards. Builders in Ocean and Monmouth counties have said the cost for elevating many homes can range

from $25,000 to $75,000 but there are many variables that affect cost.

The required height of elevation, the type of pre-existing foundating and whether a piling or block foundation is required can

all affect cost. In New Orleans, costs for elevating existing homes after Hurricane Katrina were reported between $40,000 and $60,000.

The following sections will help you guide you as you return to your home following a disaster and begin planning your rebuilding efforts with sustainability in mind

All enclosures under the base flood elevation level must be built to break free when hit by strong

winds or floodwaters and not damage the elevated building.

Allows water to flow in and out.

Hurricane straps (made out of galvanized metal) help keep the roof fastened to the walls in high winds.

Six nails per shingle rather than four greatly increase wind resistance. Overhang at roof edges can be reduced to minize the chance of wind peeling off shingles.

The height on each site is determined by the new FEMA maps. The height can vary greatly depending if you are locate in a Zone A or Zone V area.

Utilities should be elevaetd to protect from flood damage.

(Waterproof type II felt)

Used to protect your home from wind-blown debris that becomes projectiles, shattering glass and letting

wind inside. Once inside wind can cause the house to become pressurized, causing other windows, doors and the

roof to fail.

Applied to add additional strength to rafters.
