From Rebound Magazine

BY ERIC CARLYLE I PUBLISHER/CEO BY MATTHEW FISH I EDITOR

As we enter our second year of publication what a privilege itis for Rebound Magazine to present its first annual Rebound Mag-azine Legends Awards. In this issue we celebrate two milestones — we enter our second year of publication while honoring our first round of award winners. It has been a fun ride getting here. It seems just like yesterdaywe were mailing out last year’s All-Star issue. Memories fromAugust’s Legends Conference are still fresh in my mind.Throughout the past year I have been so lucky to work withan incredible team. First, hats off to the NBRPA team. That includes both thenational and local leadership and the amazing members wehave met along the way. I would also like to recognize the hard-working team at Rebound Magazine. Many of you already know Matt Fish fromhis playing days. As our editor, Matt puts in countless ten-hourdays to assure that Rebound is truly valuable to its readers. You may not know Connie Wardman, our editor-in-chief,but she is truly dedicated to making your voice the voice of Rebound Magazine. In addition to the NBRPA team and Matt and Connie, Iwould also like to thank Barbara Harwell and NBRPA memberBernard Thompson. Barbara serves as our general manager, bringing her attention to detail to the business of producingRebound Magazine. Bernard Thompson has been a loyal andkey-contributor to our success since the early planning stagesof the magazine. Before I go, I also want to thank our production team, ledby Dara Fowler, and our writers, editors, proofers and printerswho make my job so easy. So here’s to our first year together and to many more

anniversaries to come! Thank you, everyone.

Welcome to the All-Star issue of Rebound Magazine. The NBAAll-Star weekend is always a great way to showcase the playersand their amazing basketball skills. In this issue of Rebound we proudly honor members of theNBRPA. These well-deserved accolades aren’t only for accomplishments on the court. They’re also to honor off-the-court work to improve our local-to-global communities. This work is done without any expectation of receiving awards— it’s because the awardees see it as the right thing to do. Rebound Magazine proudly recognizes these overachievers forthe hard work they do for their important causes. Congratu-lations to all of you. Preparation to play as a pro is often lost on spectators, evensome hardcore fans. Strategies, diets, weights, long practice sessions, long film sessions and long study sessions are all partof the preparation. When I played, game days were my favoritedays. Game day meant an opportunity to prove that all youryears of hard work and sacrifice would pay off by helping yourteam achieve a win. The reward was winning the game —knowing that you did everything in your power to help theteam win. I rarely had a teammate who played the game forany other kind of award or reward; the real goal was for thefinal outcome — the victory. The awards for winning were the icing on the cake for allyour hard work over the years, the time and energy you had invested. So we recognize that the Rebound Magazine awardsare also the “icing on the cake” for the hard work of these honorees both on and off the court. To those of you receivingan award this year, enjoy celebrating your latest win. You deserve the icing AND the cake (enjoy eating it, too)!

ryBRPA Members: welcome to NBA All-Star 2013! As the biggestannual gathering of NBRPA members, this is a weekend to celebrate all that we accomplished together in 2012 — because ofyour support we find ourselves at an all-time high for dues-payingmembers, with an unprecedented roster of member benefits,

programs and community initiatives. At the same time, we’d like to use thisweekend to listen to our members, share ideas and make 2013 the best year everfor our Association. Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the National Basketball Retired Players Association which was founded in 1992 by Legends of Basketball DaveBing, Archie Clark, Dave Cowens, Oscar Robertson and the late Dave DeBusschere. The National Basketball Association (NBA) has helped support theNBRPA since its inception and that historic partnership will continue for years tocome. In late 2012 the NBA and NBRPA jointly announced an extension and enhancement to the relationship, and details of our expanded partnership will beannounced this All-Star Weekend alongside Commissioner David Stern andCommissioner-elect Adam Silver at NBA Jam Session. The NBRPA also remains closely tied to the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). The NBPA renewed its financial support of our Associationin 2012 and discussions are ongoing with Executive Director Billy Hunter abouthow to work in tandem to best serve our closely-related constituencies — after all,NBPA members of today will be NBRPA members of tomorrow. The NBRPA strives to take care of its own, helping former NBA, ABA andHarlem Globetrotters players transition into life after the game through a fullmenu of member programming. The NBRPA has awarded members and theirfamilies more than $1 million in educational funds through the Dave DeBusschereScholarship Program and continues to raise funds in support of this cornerstoneinitiative. We offer comprehensive resources to assist our alumni with career development, continuing education, business and financial literacy, legal researchand health & wellness (with many new programs on the horizon for 2013). Just as important is our dual mission to give back to the community throughthe good work of our Legends. Make no mistake, we are a service organizationand our members show their philanthropic dedication time and again as goodwillambassadors for the game. Working in conjunction with the NBA and NBPA, theNBRPA’s membership promotes basketball and enhances the sport’s image bybuilding community relationships and fostering support for charitable activitiesand philanthropic events — both in the United States and abroad — with a connection to the game.

Thank you NBRPA members for helping our Association grow and prosper. Enjoy All-Star 2013and help us celebrate both where the NBRPA hasbeen and where we are headed!

Yours in basketball,

to rebound throughout his career, part of the reason he has been named the2013 Rebound Magazine Legend of the Year. But as an NBRPA member, it is alsobecause of his contributions to his community and to the game of basketballduring and after his professional playing career with the ABA and NBA. Nowthat his playing days have concluded, it’s no surprise that he helps others learnhow to rebound in their lives. A Hall of Fame center whose career spanned 21 seasons, Malone retiredas the third-leading rebounder and fifth-leading scorer in NBA history. Forhis efforts, he was honored during the 1996-97 season as a member of theNBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. While fans today are accustomed to players like LeBron James, Kobe Bryantand Kevin Garnett making the leap from high school directly to the pros, Malone was the one that actually pioneered the move. At the age of 19, the 6-10 Malone made the jump from Petersburg High School in Virginia to theUtah Stars of the ABA in 1974. As a rookie, he averaged 18.8 points a game and 14.6 rebounds on 57-percentshooting from the floor. His numbers would allow him to earn ABA All-RookieTeam honors in 1975 and become an ABA All-Star in 1976. After a two-year stint in the ABA, the NBA and ABA merged with Malonegoing to the Trail Blazers in the 1976 ABA Dispersal Draft. Without ever playinga second in Portland, he was traded to the Buffalo Braves where he played all oftwo games before being sent to Houston for two draft picks. Malone would spend six seasons in Houston, winning two NBA MVPawards, leading Houston to the 1981 NBA Finals, leading the league in rebounding during the 1978-79 season and breaking the league’s record foroffensive rebounding in his first year as a Rocket. After entering the ABAas a power forward, Malone’s frame filled out and he eventually moved to thecenter position. Not as tall as other centers in his era, Malone utilized his strength, quicknessand tenacity to become a force down low. A monster on the glass, he was theNBA's rebounding leader six times during a seven-year span, starting during the1978-79 season and ending during the 1984-85 season.

Just as deadly as a scorer, he averaged more than 20 points per game for 11-straight years, utilizing a complete arsenal of post moves, a penchant for grabbing offensive rebounds and an unparalleled ability to get to the free throw line. But he also made his presence felt on the defensiveend, earning a selection to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1979. After being traded to the Sixers at the conclusion of his MVP 1981-82 season, his dynamicabilities on both the offensive and defensive ends would pay immediate dividends for Philadelphia.Malone would go on to win his third and final MVP trophy after leading the Sixers to a 65-17record, an NBA title and a 12-1 record during the 1983 postseason. He would also go on to win NBA 1983 Finals MVP, become an All-Star for a sixth-straighttime, make the All-NBA First Team and the NBA All-Defensive First Team, all while averaging26 points and 15.8 rebounds a night throughout the playoffs. Malone would stay with Philadelphiafor three more seasons, winning the rebounding title with averages of better than 13 boards pergame in the next two campaigns and posting scoring averages of 22.7, 24.6 and 23.8 points agame, respectively.

The 1984-85 campaign, which was his last with the Sixers, saw him become the first player inNBA history to lead the league in rebounding for five consecutive seasons. With his 13.1 a gameaverage, he broke Wilt Chamberlain’s record of leading the NBA in boards for four-straight years,a mark that had stood since the 1960s. Malone’s career was remarkable because of its consistency. In 1978, which would’ve been Malone’s senior year in college had he attended, he would make the first of what would be 12consecutive All-Star Game appearances. However, during the 1989-90 season Malone’s career would start to slowly decline. In his second season with the Hawks, he would finally snap a streak of 11-straight 20-point and 10-rebound seasons. It would also mark the last season that Malone would lead the NBA in offensive boards. Buthe would still go on to play five more seasons in the NBA, averaging in double figures in two ofthose campaigns. After retiring following the 1994-95 season, Malone finished by having scored 27,409 pointsand grabbing 16,212 rebounds throughout his 19-year NBA career. His 8,531 free throws weremore than any other player in NBA history, his 11,090 free throw attempts were ranked secondall-time and his 1,329 games played ranked third in league history. Malone is the NBA’s all-time leader in offensive rebounds and second in defensive rebounds. He also set a league record by grabbing 21 offensive boards in a single game against the SeattleSuperSonics in 1977. And when it was all said and done, Malone would go on to set the NBA record for most consecutive games played without fouling out with 1,207. For everything he did on the court, hewas enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. Although his playing career has ended, his excellence has continued — Malone is now using his exceptional skills and abilities to help individuals and organizations in the Houston area and

Rebound Magazine has named Lafayette “Fat” Lever as its Ring ofHonor Award Winner, an award intended to honor a Legend whohas made significant long-term contributions to his community. With an 11-year career as an NBA player, Lever was a two-time All-Star and was considered one of the league’s top defensiveplayers for the majority of his career. He played his first two seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers before going to the DenverNuggets where he was considered one the league’s best pointguards in the late 80s. He spent his last three seasons with the Dallas Mavericks. Finishing as the Nuggets’ leader in all-time steals and secondin career assists, his career averages came in at 13.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.22 steals per game in 752 outings. Andhe is one of only three players in NBA history to record 15-pluspoints, rebounds and assists in a single playoff game, Jason Kiddand Wilt Chamberlain being the other two. Lever is remembered in particular for his versatility, his abilityto do everything. He attributes this ability to his high school coachat Pueblo High School in Tucson. Winning back-to-back Arizonastate titles in 1976-78, every member of the team was expected toscore, pass, rebound and defend. According to the Nuggets formercoach Doug Moe, “You couldn’t keep him off the floor. He couldpass, shoot, run, play defense, rebound. There wasn’t a phase ofthe game he couldn’t play.” Lever is also remembered for his amazing 45 triple-doubleswhile with Denver; the only players to have more career triple-doubles than Lever are Oscar Robinson, Magic Johnson, JasonKidd, Wilt Chamberlain and Larry Bird. Moe, one of Lever’sgreat admirers, has said that “It was easy for him to get a triple-double because he was such a great rebounder. He was just a

Winner of Rebound Magazine’s2013 Entrepreneur Award isStephen Bardo. He has had awell known basketball careerbut he’s been an entrepreneurin the making from his earliestyears. As a kid he sat in the living room watching basket-ball with his dad, Harold. Bothfather and son were calling thegames along with well-knownbasketball sportscasters like

Dick Vitale or Billy Parker, and Bardo feels like his broadcast train-ing began then. But he first needed to play basketball. From honors as an All-State and honorable mention as an All-American basketball player while in high school in Carbondale,Illinois, Bardo went on to be a successful four-year point guard asa Fighting Illini, reaching the NCAA tournament each season.During his college playing days he was named Big Ten DefensivePlayer of the Year and twice made All-Conference, leading the“Flyin’ Illini” to the Final Four in 1989 — a team that was one ofthe most memorable in NCAA history. Ten years later he and his Illinois coach Lou Henson werebeing interviewed by Vitale on ESPN. During that time Bardosaid, “Dick, I want your job.” The ESPN producer complimented

terrific player and probably underrated. He wasn’t what you’d calla household name. Everybody knew he was a good player but hewas better than what people really knew.” He is now director of player development for the SacramentoKings. In the King’s announcement of his hiring in 2007, GeoffPetrie, president of basketball operations, said that “We’re reallyexcited to have Fat join our staff. He had an outstanding career inthe NBA. He’s worked with the NBA Cares program and he’sbeen involved with the community in Phoenix.” A former pointguard for Arizona State University and a fan favorite, his AlmaMater honored Lever by retiring his jersey in January of 2012. It is Lever’s versatility and his involvement with a variety ofcommunities that is a key element in honoring his contributions. In addition to his involvement in the communities where he hasplayed and lived, Lever has been active in NBA programs and inthe NBRPA in his post-playing years. His long-time service aspresident of the NBRPA Phoenix chapter has been heralded as asignificant contribution in that chapter’s growth and development.

him on his responses and Bardo’s dad told him to write the network a thank you note. A month later he received a letter back, not from ESPN but from the president of ABC Sports, DennisSwanson. In essence the letter said that when Bardo was ready towork, Swanson was ready to hire him. A post-basketball careerwas already in the works. Swanson, now president of Fox Television Station Operations, has said “I give him a ton of credit.” He continued to say that“Stephen had that mental toughness. He had that discipline. It’sone thing to be tall, athletic, handsome and with a good voice. Butit’s another thing to do the homework, to do the studying, to do allthat goes into it. Everything was there, he just needed to nurtureit and grow it, which he’s done. The result is that he’s very success-ful as an on-air talent.” Between college and ESPN, Bardo had a 10-year career splitbetween the NBA, CBA and teams overseas in France, Italy, Japan,Spain and Venezuela. But as a natural-born entrepreneur, he hasadded to his college basketball analyst gig by becoming a motiva-tional speaker and authoring a book considered to be a successguide for young people — “How to Make the League WithoutPicking Up the Rock.” Just as he took younger players under his wing in college, thisbook reveals to readers that there is a level of success in every careerfield and it starts by meeting and developing positive relationshipswith others that will pay dividends later on in life. It also tells themthat they can’t be a great success until they can picture it in theirown minds. Clearly, Bardo’s entrepreneurial nature enabled himto picture a very successful life for himself after playing basketball. Check out his website at www.stephenbardo.com/.

Intended to honor a Legend who has given substantially of himselfto help others,Rebound Magazine is awarding its 2013 PhilanthropicAward to Dale Ellis. With a 17-year career in the NBA, he has beenregarded as arguably one the best shooters in the league’s history, one sportswriter remarking on his “deadeye accuracy.” Drafted ninth overall in the 1983 NBA draft by the DallasMavericks, his career took a tremendous leap when he was tradedto the Seattle SuperSonics. Ellis played with them for four and ahalf seasons and was recognized by the league as the NBA MostImproved Player in 1987. In 1989 he was named an NBA All-Star and named to the All-NBA third team. He also played forthe Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets,Toronto Raptors and the Charlotte Hornets. At the close of his NBA career, Ellis had played in 1,209 games

and had career per game averages of 15.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, a.479 field goal percentage and a .403 three-point field goal percentage. He is not only fifth all-time in NBA history in three-point shots made with 1,719, he is also 21st all-time in NBA history in three-point field goal percentage. Now settled back in his hometown of Marietta, Georgia, hehas maintained his playing days workout regimen of push-ups, sit-ups, crunches and biking a minimum of 100 miles a week supplemented with trail running. It keeps him fit and enables himto refocus, just like playing basketball used to do. Traveling the world as an ambassador of the game, he hasbeen to Asia, Europe and South America. Ellis has also spent timevisiting U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. Now president of the NBRPA Atlanta chapter, he’s involved in helpingthe 140 retired players in the area make a positive transition fromthe court to a private life. He says he knows what it’s like — “Thegame is all you know. And then comes the reality of, ‘What do Ido now?’ It’s hard.” In addition to NBRPA business, Ellis spends much of histime helping youth in the Atlanta area. As a strong proponent ofthe power of literacy and education to empower and change lives,he is actively involved in many programs helping local kids, suchas the Boys & Girls Club, and participating in charity events, suchas golf tournaments, that directly benefit these organizations. He has also partnered with Olympic track and field athletesMel Pinder and Kevin Young as well as Olympic hoops star Debbie Miller to work with kids through a summer camp program, much as he did during his playing days. The goal is toteach kids simple life skills that are complimentary to their athleticabilities, telling them that “it’s okay to reach for the stars when itcomes to athletics but the most important thing is education.” His advice to everyone from kids to retired Legends is thesame — “Figure out what it is you want to do with your life anddo it. Reach for the highest level because if you don’t make it,you’ll always find something in between that is rewarding.”

Tampa Bay Thrillers while his NBA teams included the Philadel-phia 76ers, Chicago Bulls, Washington Bullets, Detroit Pistons andHouston Rockets. In 1995 Charles won an NBA Championshipwith the Rockets appearing in 19 out of 22 post-season contests. Beyond playing great basketball, what has most often been observed as one of the Jones family traits is their unflappability.Nothing seems to rattle them – they just appear to take it all instride. But don’t let that fool you into thinking they haven’t caredabout winning or weren’t fully engaged in the game! Their sharedlove for the game their dad called “that jumpin’ and jumpin’” hasmade them powerful ambassadors for basketball. It has also shapedthem into solid role models for how to handle the fame and notoriety that comes with being a pro player.

If ever a family has left a basketball legacy, it would be the Jonesbrothers, winner of Rebound Magazine’s 2013 Legacy Award. Thevery tall Jones family of McGehee, Arkansas had eight children —seven boys and one girl (she was the shortest at 6-foot-3). Six of the seven brothers, all 6-foot-8 or taller, played collegebasketball at the predominantly-African-American Albany StateUniversity in Georgia. And for 18 straight seasons one of the Jonesbrothers was the center for the Albany team. Four of them —Wilbert, Caldwell, Major and Charles — went on to play pro basketball in the NBA. While the other two brothers, Oliver and Melvin, also had proplaying opportunities, they stayed primarily connected to the gamethrough college sports. Oliver was the head coach of the DivisionII Albany State Golden Rams for 28 years and Melvin, a supervisorat Procter & Gamble’s Albany paper products plant, served asOliver’s unpaid assistant as his work duties permitted. Wilbert “Wil” Jones was the Round 5 pick; 69th overall, in the1969 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. A six-foot-8 forward,he played seven seasons in the ABA, from 1969-1976, for theMiami Floridians, Memphis Pros, Memphis Tams and KentuckyColonels. Following the 1976 merger of the ABA-NBA, the Indiana Pacers selected him in the ABA Dispersal Draft where heplayed two seasons in the NBA for the Pacers and the BuffaloBraves. While with the Colonels in 1975 Wil won the ABA Championship and was named to the ABA All-Defense Team. He was also an ABA All-Star in 1972 while with the Tams. Next to enter the NBA Draft was center-power forward, 6-foot-11 Caldwell “Pops” Jones who had a 17-year career. In 1973the Philadelphia 76ers drafted him in Round 2; 32nd overall buthe started with the ABA’s San Diego Conquistadores turned SanDiego Sails and then played with the Kentucky Colonels and Spirits of St. Louis, being named an ABA All-Star in 1975. In 1976he moved to the NBA playing with the high-powered 76ers of thatera. He also played with the Houston Rockets, Chicago Bulls andPortland Trail Blazers and was twice named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team in 1981-1982. Following Caldwell was the 6-foot-9, Major Jones, drafted in1976 by the Portland Trail Blazers in Round 2; 20th overall. As apower forward he started his career with the CBA’s Allentown Jetsand then moved to the WBA Fresno Stars before playing for theHouston Rockets from 1979-1984. He ended his nine-year careerin 1985 with the Detroit Pistons. Finally came the youngest Jones brother, the six-foot-9, powerforward-center, Charles. He was drafted in 1979 by the PhoenixSuns in Round 8; 165th overall, and enjoyed a 15-year professionalcareer playing on several CBA teams as well as in the NBA; he alsoplayed on teams in France and Italy. Rebound Magazine’s 2013 Diversity Award goes to David “BigDaddy D” Lattin. He had a six-year career in both the NBA andABA, playing with the San Francisco Warriors, Phoenix Suns,Pittsburgh Condors and the Memphis Tams, before ending hiscareer with three years with the world famous Harlem Globetrot-ters. But he is best known for his college basketball play. Lattin was one of seven African-American players on the 1966Texas Western championship team which is considered one of themost important teams in college basketball history. But his impacton diversity in basketball began in high school where he wasHouston’s first Texas high school basketball All-American in theearly 1960s when he played at segregated Evan E. Worthing Senior High School. Following his high school graduation in 1963 he went to Ten-nessee State but left there in 1964 because of lack of basketball competition. Returning to Houston, in 1965 he received a fullscholarship to Texas Western College, now the University of Texasat El Paso (UTEP) where he played center for the Miners, anNCAA Division 1 team under legendary coach Don Haskins. Witha starting lineup of five African-American players, they were slatedto play the No. 1-ranked University of Kentucky team coached byAdolph Rupp, for the 1966 NCAA basketball championship. The reason for this game’s historical significance is that an all-Black team had never played an all-white team in an NCAA titlegame. At the start of the game, Haskins let the team know thatRupp had vowed that this all-African-American team would neverbeat his team. Lattin and his teammates now had something to

Moses Malone has said of the Joneses, “They’re good people, really down to earth. Nothing gets them upset. When Caldwellfouls, he acts like nothing happened.” Also talking about Caldwell, former 76ers teammate Franklin Edwards said that “I’ve tried tomodel myself after him. He speaks to everybody, not at anybody.”And David Vann, manager of the Philadelphia softball team thatCaldwell and Charles played on, has shared that Caldwell “knowshow to deal with people. If fans disrespect him, he’s got a great wayof dealing with that. He just doesn’t look down. When you’re sevenfeet tall, that’s easy.” And by all accounts, these are things that couldbe said of all the Jones brothers. Major has served as president of the NBRPA Houston Chaptersince 2009. Under his strong leadership, the Houston Legendsare actively investing in their local community as well as commu-nities around the globe through implementation of their key initiatives. Chapter members have played a key role in expandingthe effectiveness of the national organization for all its members. The Jones brothers have indeed left a basketball legacy that won’tsoon be forgotten.

prove. And prove it, they did with a stunning 72-65 upset. A dominant part of the game, Lattin was named All-American during both his 1966-67 seasons at Texas Western, and he stillholds a number of school NCAA tournament records. Pat Riley, himself a legendary coach and NBA All-Star, was aKentucky starter that season and recalled that “It was a violent game.I don’t mean there were any fights but they were desperate and theywere committed and they were more motivated than we were.” Known in sports annals as the game that “changed everything,”it advanced the civil rights movement. It has been called the sportsequivalent of the Selma bridge or Greensboro lunch counter incidents, even referred to as the “Brown vs. Board of Education ofcollege basketball.” Basically, it allowed for greater racial equality incollege sports to become the norm rather than the exception. While this game has been the subject of numerous documen-taries, books, newspaper and magazine articles over the years, Lattin has written and self-published his account of this inspiringexperience from the perspective of the players. Entitled “SlamDunk to Glory — the story of the 1966 NCAA ChampionshipGame that changed America forever,” it was made into a feature-length motion picture entitled “Glory Road.” Released in January2006 by Disney motion pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Produc-tions, it won an ESPY award as the best sports movie of 2006. Andin 2007 Lattin was inducted to the Texas Black Sports Hall ofFame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Since his retirement from basketball, Lattin has gone on tobecome a successful businessman as both a corporate executiveand an entrepreneur.

THE NBRPA –HOUSTON CHAPTER is actively carryingout the organization’s dual mission of helping its members makea smooth transition to a life beyond the court and to act as local-to-global ambassadors to the sport of basketball. And chaptermembers are also actively involved in their local community.Under the leadership of President Major Jones and his officersand directors, Kevin Loder, John Egan, Howard Smith, OllieTaylor, Harvey Catchings and Steve Hayes, the Houston membersare devoting their time and talents to three key initiatives: 1. Water Conservation & Education 2. Health & Wellness Education 3. STEM Education

WATER CONSERVATION AND EDUCATIONTo increase exposure and educational experiences about ourshared water resources to approximately 20,000 middle and highschool students and thousands of educators, the Houston chapterhas formed a partnership with the Project WET Foundation(PWF). The goal is to use the Legends’ star power to make themaware of the importance of water in everyday life and how to conserve it — why it is so important to do so on a daily basis. The partnership with PWF has created Make a Splashprogram that every quarter tours one local middle or high schoolor provides field trips to county parks and water processing facilities to promote awareness of and increase knowledge aboutwater resources. Then every September students from theschools that were visited are invited to the chapter’s annual Makea Splash with NBRPA-Houston and Project WET Festival. This program has also become international with the additionof a three-year contract with the country of Ghana to educatetheir communities through teachers sharing the importance ofwater education — of water hygiene, health and conservation. The Village of Vision for Haiti Foundation, American Airlinesand Sunspring Innovative Water Technologies are also partnersin providing clean water solutions and teaching the use of cleanwater to aid efforts to eradicate cholera.

Sport Authority, local charter schools and other similar organi-zations, they have introduced a program called Kids Get Fit thatteaches kids the importance of exercise to maintain a healthy wayof life. The goal of this initiative is to leverage the Legends and theirstar status to help educate upwards of 20,000 youth annually. TheKids Get Fit Community Basketball Clinics are held quarterlythroughout Houston and its surrounding areas for kids frommiddle school through 12th grade. As the kids are learning basketball skills, such as rebounding, dribbling, shooting and defensive drills from the chapter members, the instructors relatethe drills to everyday life health habits.

STEM EDUCATIONEducation in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, andMath – is an important initiative for chapter members to address.A growing issue for U.S. students is their lack of competitivenessin these areas compared to other countries. This is seen as athreat to the development of new ideas, new products, new companies and innovation that keeps the U.S. competitive andable to address the challenges related to healthcare, energy andthe economy. Houston chapter members have created an initiative to bekey advocates for STEM education with goals to increase theimpact of philanthropy by acting as a voice for pre-existing highquality and scalable programs. These are programs that giveyoung people an introduction to STEM and to key programsexisting in the Houston market. Members hope to increase attention and financial support to these programs by producingoutreach campaigns with corporate partners and pre-existingprograms. They also participate in STEM challenges hosted annually in Houston with the aim of increasing scholarship offerings to STEM students graduating from high school to help their acceptance into college engineering, math and science programs.

MULTIPLE CONGRATULATIONS TO JAMAAL “SILK” WILKES who had his No. 52 jersey retired by the Los Angeles Lakers in a ceremony on December 28, 2012. As a strong supporting player, he won a title as an NBA rookie at Golden State alongside Rick Barryand Clifford Ray before earning three more rings in L.A. The Lakers only retire Hall of Famers’ jerseys, so Wilkes’ recent enshrinementinto the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame earlier in 2012 made this more recent honor possible. His jersey hangs in the raftersnext to Magic Johnson’s No. 32. But more congratulations are in store for Wilkes because on January 17 his No. 52 jersey was retiredby the UCLA Bruins and on the 28th he was honored for those accomplishments at halftime when the two high schools he played for– Santa Barbara High School and Ventura High – played one another in a game in Ventura.

Win Now; Explain Laterigger, stronger or faster? It’s the age old quest of everyathlete. But what price will you pay to be bigger, stronger

or faster? Right now athletes are being paid millions of dollars tobe the best. It’s what I call generation money, when a wholegeneration of people are wealthy. Fame pulls you in for themoment and you are not really concerned about what happensafterward. Tons of athletes are using performance enhancementdrugs, putting their minds and bodies at future risk so they canperform now – collect the dollars, collect the fame, collect thechampionships, the trophies, the awards NOW. Later on when the truth is revealed, many either willinglyconfess to their choices or their bodies confess unwillingly, breaking down because of the damaging effects of performanceenhancement drugs. What it all boils down to is that everyonewants to be a champion. The question is do you want to do itthe right way or the wrong way? Lance Armstrong took the world by storm giving us ahero, someone to look up to who did it the right way ... we

B thought. Against all odds he survived cancer and became notonly a sports icon but also a worldwide icon. But he cheated, re-ally doing this in the name of winning. I once talked to a person who justified this behavior by saying “Well, the differenceis if I train 20 hours-a-day to try to get a little bit better and thecheater, who uses performance enhancement drugs and becomesfaster than anybody else on the track, trains only 2 hours-a-day,then it is worth all the fame and fortune.” God gave us all talents. I believe we should use those God-given talents to the best of our abilities. If you can’t be bigger, stronger or faster on your own, then in my view it’s not worth it.Ask Lance Armstrong or other athletes who have risked every-thing only to lose their integrity. What is done in the dark willcome to light and you will still have to decide if you want to explain now or explain later.

id you ever imagine becoming part of thethriving hospitality industry? Did you everthink about owning a luxury resort and thendismiss the idea because you didn’t knowwhere to start? Wonder no more. Chandler

Hotel Group (CHG) offers its investors the best in a turnkey,full-service investment in the hospitality industry. Whetherit be for the purchase or sale of a hotel property, third-partymanagement of it, or its design and renovation, CHG handles it all. CEO and President Jared Chandler says that “Depend-ability, responsiveness and attention to detail at every step hasbeen critical to our success, and we realize we should make ita practice to engage the best in everything we do to ensureongoing, unquestionable expertise and results for our clients.”And reading the client testimonials on the company websitesupports the fact that the company follows its own policies. While CHG is a fully-tiered company that offers hotelbrokerage, management, interior design and renovationservices, it is always the people in any organization who make the difference. Made up of seasoned experts whoseprofessional lives have been spent in the management, accounting, valuation and repositioning of hospitality property, they form a results-oriented team with deep expertise in every area of the hospitality investment industry. The team operates based on the unwavering principles uponwhich the company was founded — that every individualclient is treated with care, concern and respect.

A Stable Investment in the Hospitality Industry

The CHG team’s commitment is that every client receivesthe best of their value-added expertise. They figure that if theydon’t take care of a client, someone else will, so they do whatever it takes to serve a client well, no matter the effort required. At the most basic level, they apply their expertise, build a relationship with the client and add value to theirclient’s investment. The strength of that commitment isshown in the following accomplishments: • they have successfully closed over 180 lodging transactions in excess of $2 billion in gross sales

• the management services division has successfully managed four- and five-diamond resorts, full-serviceconference hotels, boutique hotels and portfolios of limited service properties

• they are affiliated with all the major brands in the industry today.

But a company is only as strong as its leader and his or hervision. It’s clear that Jared Chandler is a true entrepreneur —someone who not only has a compelling vision but also hasthe ability to execute that vision. Chandler previously workedin the business of tax-deferred1031 investments and realizedthere was an opportunity for him to create a specialized andstable investment form for others in the hospitality industry. He paid attention to the people who were successful 1031 investors, watching how they invested and managed theirmoney and then created his business based on those soundand proven practices.

Chandler prefers his firm to be small andvery hands-on to be able to take advantage ofstrategic opportunities as they arise and to havea say in how a project goes forward. He equateswhat the company does to a game of chess sinceno two transactions or properties they broker, manage or renovate are ever the same. For a“small” firm, however, they are in the Top 100of 3rd Party Management Companies; CHGmanages multiple hotels and resorts in severalstates including Arizona, California, Utah, Colorado, Arkansas, and Missouri, among others. Their Construction Division earned aRenovation of the Year award. And while theywork with all the major players in the industry, they prefer Marriott or Hilton properties sincethey have proved to be the most attractivebrands when it comes time to sell. On a personal level, Chandler says thatfamily is always first but he also loves to helpothers in need, especially children. And heprefers to donate to charities on a local level, again giving smaller organizations the oppor-tunity to have a say in where and how they usewhat they have been given.

AS A SMALL FORWARD FOR THE ORLANDO MAGIC, Quentin Richardson is best known for dribbling, passing and shooting. But theformer first round draft pick also has a keen interest in business development, and recently became a multi-unit franchisee for EastCoast Wings & Grill, a North Carolina-based concept known for its 75 flavors of award-winning buffalo-style wings.

“In professional sports, you always have a playbook or plan that needs to be executed to perfection. East Coast Wings& Grill provides that plan and the structure is already in place in terms of marketing and operations,” Richardson said.

“We had our eyes on a couple of different concepts in the chicken wing segment, but simply could not look past EastCoast Wings & Grill,” said Keith Jackson, Principal of JacksonBrown Hospitality Group. “It was nearly impossible not to be impressedwith the incredible amount of leadership and industry experts they have assembled, as well as the environment they’ve createdthat the whole family can enjoy. WEALTH

t is the start of a New Year and already time to startthinking about filing your 2012 tax returns. Taxes havebeen a big part of the national discussion in the past fewweeks and to save us from falling off the “fiscal cliff,”taxes will increase for most Americans in 2013.

Everyone is required to file a tax return. Some people maytry this difficult task on their own. However with the increased complexity of the tax laws it’s important to get a“coach” to help you. In order to make sure that you pay theleast amount of taxes possible, it is always recommended tohave someone help you and more importantly, YOU mustbe part of the process. There are many commercials and advertisements for people who want to help you prepare your return and all ofthem will say they are the best. Some of those people are licensed while others are not.• A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) works independ-

ently or for a firm and has had to complete rigorous edu-cational requirements, including a college degree andpassing a three-day national examination. Most CPAs haverequired work experience and must satisfy state annualcontinuing education requirements and follow a strictcode of ethics.

• A Tax Attorney is also highly qualified to help you prepare your return and has a strong understanding of taxlaw but can be much more expensive than a CPA.

• An Enrolled Agent has passed an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) examination and is licensed to prepare a taxreturn. There are no educational requirements but theydo have annual education requirements.

• Bookkeepers are generally hired to help you pay yourbills or record expenses for a business.

Other people commonly used to prepare returns includefriends, relatives, and business associates. A professional athlete’s tax return has complex components that are generallybeyond the expertise of many tax preparers. If you are involved in business and/or charitable organizations whileplaying or in retirement, hiring a CPA is your best choice. Finally, a licensed and educated accountant is required to perform several hours of continuing education every year. They stay up to date on the changes in tax laws that affect thepreparation of tax returns.

ITime to Think Taxes

34 I

When hiring a CPA check their credentials though theState Licensing Board in each state. Additionally, each statehas a CPA Society that can help you find an accountant withexpertise in the tax issues that are important to you. When youare choosing someone, ask for references of their other clients, meet with them or have a telephone conversation with themto gain a comfort level that they have an understanding ofthe unique tax issues for YOUR individual situation. Building a relationship with a CPA can help you in many aspects of your life as a trusted resource on future business and investment decisions. CPAs work with financial advisors, attorneys and your “team” to help you manage your financialportfolio. To make your CPA’s job easier at tax time make sure yourimportant information is organized — including medical expenses, business expenses, charitable donations (receipts), taxdocuments (income, investments, etc.), credit card statements, property tax receipts, etc. Bring all this information with youto your meeting. Something you think may not be useful mayin fact help you reduce the amount of taxes you may owe.Don’t wait until the last minute to get your information to yourtax preparer. The IRS receives many tax documents — W-2,1099, etc. — from employers and investment firms and compares them to what you submit with your return. If youleave something out the IRS will send you a notice that willinclude what you owe, including interest and penalties. Openany letters and notices you receive from the IRS immediatelyand contact your CPA. Don’t shop around for cost as a less expensive preparer maycost you more in taxes. Make sure you understand everythingon your return. Make your preparer go over the detail on yourreturn so YOU agree with the information. Many times badpreparers will overstate your deductions to get you a larger refund even though you did not qualify for those deductions. The problem is that YOU will owe the taxes, penalties and interest if you get audited. Remember that YOU sign your return under Penalty of Perjury that you agree with the infor-mation on the return. Members of the SFAA are available fora free review of your tax return.

The Sports Financial Advisors Association (SFAA) is a non-profit association of CPAs, Attorneys and Financial Advisors. You can reachus at www.sportsfinancial.org

A professional athlete’s tax return has complex components that aregenerally beyond the expertise of many tax preparers ... hiring a CPAis your best choice.
