Rear Admiral Stuart H. Smith, SC, USN (Ret.), 89, passed away September 19th. Admiral Smith retired July 31, 1972. He was serving as the Commanding Officer, Navy Aviation Supply Office, Philadelphia. He graduated from the University of California and earned his Masters Degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. Admiral Smith served aboard USS TENNESSEE, USS SAN PABLO, and USS BENNINGTON. His shore assignments included Assistant Fleet and Force Supply Officer, Pacific Fleet; Commanding Officer, Navy Supply Corps School; Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Management, Atlantic Command and Fleet Supply Officer, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Admiral Smith is survived by his wife, Harriett Hills Smith, and his daughters: Caraly Higuchi, Sandra Montgomery, and Beverly Smith. Memorial Donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. He grew up in Palo Alto, where he attended Channing Grammar School and Palo Alto High School, and was the first Eagle Scout in Troop 57 of Palo Alto. A graduate of UC Berkeley (1941), the Harvard Business School (MBA 1951), and The War College (1963). The Admiral's 32 yr. career in the U.S. Navy was served with high distinction. Numerous awards and medals marked his service afloat and ashore. Most exceptionally, of these, he was twice decorated with the prestigious Legion of Honor. Stuart was predeceased by his first wife, Joy Smith, and is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Harriett Hills Smith, and his daughters: Caraly (Dave) Higuchi of Pasadena, Sandra (Jack) Montgomery, and Beverly Smith of Pacifica. His kindness, charm and love comforts us in this time of loss and his beautiful spirit will be forever celebrated. A private family service will be held at a later date.
