Who remembers when Martin
Marietta built monorail trains
for Walt Disney World?
Yes, for those who are una-
ware or just don’t remember,
Martin Marietta did in fact con-
struct the initial monorail cars in
the 1970s for the new Walt Dis-
ney World theme park in Orlan-
do.
An assembly line was set up
in Building 10 (which has since
been demolished), stretching al-
most the entire length of the sin-
gle-story portion of the building.
The monorail is just one of
dozens of historic projects and
events that should be kept in the

Best pumpkin pie recipe:
Mark IV monorails like this one were built by Martin Marietta.
Ingredients
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, sof-tened 2 cups canned pumpkin, mashed 1 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg plus 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten 1 cup half-and-half 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) melted butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, optional 1 piece pre-made pie dough
Whipped cream, for topping
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

hour to firm up.

Fit a piece of aluminum foil to cover the inside of the shell completely. Fill the shell up to the edges with pie weights or dried beans (about 2
pounds) and place it in the oven.
Bake for 10 minutes, remove the foil and pie weights and bake for another 10 minutes or until the crust is dried out and beginning to
color.
For the filling, in a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese with a hand mixer. Add the pumpkin and beat until combined. Add the sugar and salt, and beat until combined. Add the eggs mixed with the yolks, half-and-half, and melted butter, and beat until combined. Finally, add
the vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger, if using, and beat until incorporated.
Pour the filling into the warm prepared pie crust and bake for 50 minutes, or until the center is set. Place the pie on a wire rack and cool to room temperature. Cut into slices and top each piece with a gener-
ous amount of whipped cream.

minds of past, current, and fu-
ture employees of Lockheed
Martin.
To do that, we need your
help.
Looking for photos
Lockheed Martin is reestab-
lishing the company museum in
the old main lobby of the Sand
Lake Road Complex main plant.
We need photos of the monorail
coach assembly area because
none can be found in the compa-
ny archives.
If you have or know of
someone who has photos or doc-
uments related to the Disney
monorail project, please consid-
er donating or loaning those arti-
facts. Either REALM or Lock-
heed Martin can accept your
donations.
Please contact me regarding
any contributions and I will pass
your information on to the ap-
propriate people at Lockheed
Martin.
Also, if any of you had per-
sonal experience with the Disney
monorail project, we would like
to share your story with the
REALM membership through an
article in REALM News.
New museum grander than
before
The new museum will occu-
py the entire old main lobby ar-
ea, whereas in the past it was
confined to an adjacent side
room. There is a dedicated team
of employees assigned to remove
the present product display mate-
rials and recreate the museum.
Bill Rivera and I met with the
company employees principally
responsible for the project—John
Owen and Steve Rocca—
recently to review plans and dis-
cuss how we could mutually sup-
port each others initiatives. We
were impressed with their plans
and know you will be delighted
to see it whenever you might
have occasion to visit the plant.
The expected completion is
spring of 2013.
Working together
Bill and I learned there are
several ways the company,
through these individuals, can
assist with the club’s “History of
Aviation” project at the Orlando
Science Center. For our part,
volunteers can assist when the
time comes to do the physical
part of setting set up the artifacts
and displays. Contact me if you
are interested and I will let you
know when we need your help.
Also, we agreed that the club
and the company should loan
each other, on a rotating basis,
easily portable artifacts that are
significant, one-of-a-kind items
that would otherwise be unavail-
able to the other party.

REALM News—December 2012—Page 4
The annual REALM meet-
ing, hosted by
Lockheed Mar-
tin Global Train-
ing and Logis-
tics (GTL) on
October 17, was
a great success
with 136 mem-
bers in attend-
ance. Denise
Saiki, President of Lockheed
Martin GTL, was the keynote
speaker.
In her introductory remarks,
Ms. Saiki recalled that her first
contact with REALM was a copy
of REALM News on her desk to
greet her when she first arrived.
Ms. Saiki provided excellent
insight into GTL’s lines of busi-
ness and reassured everyone that
the recent corporate reorganiza-
tion had virtually no significant
impact on current manpower or
business opportunities.
Following Ms. Saiki’s re-
marks, the results of the voting
for the 2013 slate of officers was
announced and the new slate of
officers were
introduced.
After
adjournment,
I extended
REALM’s
thanks and
appreciation
to Ms. Saiki
for GTL’s
gracious
hosting of
our 2012
annual
membership
meeting.
It’s December already and
hard to believe that another year
has flown by. Overall, REALM
has had a very successful 2012.
This year’s biggest challenge was
and continues to be finding vol-
unteers to fill the various execu-
tive council, director, and com-
mittee leadership vacancies. The
most urgent challenge we faced
was getting a replacement for
Andrea Lawrence who an-
nounced her resignation effective
after the December issue. I am
happy to report that Glenda
McClure and Evelyne Mitchell
have graciously volunteered to
jointly take on this important
REALM assignment. This team
will enjoy a transition with An-
drea over the next few editions.
Thankfully the monthly newslet-
ter will continue without inter-
ruption.
Challenges aside, REALM
experienced some notable
achievements throughout 2012.
Attendance at our eight Lunch
Bunches this year averaged over
90 people per venue. We owe a
debt of thanks to all those who
volunteered, took the initiative to
sponsor and coordinate the ven-
ue, and together made this activi-
ty a great success in 2012.
Throughout the year,
REALM made its presence visi-
ble in the community through its
support of the “Honor Flight of
Central Florida” program,
“Welcome Home Troops” pro-
gram, the “Kinetic Challenge”
competition at the Orlando Sci-
ence Center, and supporting
Lockheed Martin’s “Day of Car-
ing” at the Salvation Army.
Fred Curtis and his team
have made significant progress
on the permanent REALM-
Lockheed Martin aviation and
aerospace exhibit at the Orlando
Science Center. Work has begun
on the M-109 simulator and
building of the cockpit prototype
will start after the current Orlan-
do Science Center Star Wars Ex-
hibit departs.
As we close out the year, I
leave you with this thought:
Old friends are Gold, new friends
are Diamonds, if you get a Dia-
mond don’t forget the Gold; be-
cause to hold a Diamond you
always need a base of Gold.
I wish everyone a peaceful
and prosperous Christmas season
and a safe and healthy New Year.
By Bill Rivera
President’s Message
Lockheed Martin GTL president Denise Saiki appreciated the warm welcome REALM NEWS extended to her upon her arrival last year to lead the Orlando-based simulation, training, and logistics business. GTL has more than 10,000 people serving customers worldwide.
For more about the meeting, please see pages 9 and 10.

REALM News—December 2012—Page 5
The group of Central Flori-
da Lockheed Martin businesses
held its annual Day of Caring
Saturday, October 20, with 20
REALM members joining a
thousand other employees,
family, and friends.
The Salvation Army was
the main staging area for sever-
al Day of Caring projects. The
volunteers arrived before 8:00
a.m. and most performed vari-
ous tasks at the Salvation
Army. Others were transported
by bus to other locations
around Orlando.
Working in 45 project teams, we painted, land-
scaped and repaired nine facilities, including the Co-
alition for the Homeless (Main Campus and Wom-
en’s Residential and Counseling Center), Communi-
ty Coordinated Care for Children, House of Hope,
Nap Ford Community School, Orlando Day Nurse-
ry, Orlando Downtown Recreation Complex and the
Salvation Army (Orlando Area Command and the
Adult Rehabilitation Center).
Volunteers also hosted a technology fair de-
signed to motivate Parramore Kidz Zone students to
engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) activities. Approximately 75
local students participated in flight simulations,
FIRST Robotics presentations, career discussions
and hands-on science experiments.
REALM’s task this year was to help make
Christmas Angles for the Salvation
Army’s Angle Tree program and to help
out with a Career and Health Fair for
Adults.
Sixteen REALM participants made
angels and four helped with the Career and
Health Fair. Each Christmas angel repre-
sents the wishes of a real child or youth
for a toy, clothes, books, hat, gloves; and
fulfills the family and child’s specific
needs and wishes for the holiday season.
If it were not for this program many of
these children would be left out at Christ-
mas.
Thanks to all those from REALM who
helped out on a very memorable day.

support to those less fortunate

REALM Recreation
Our beautiful Florida October sped by with four
Friday bridge playing days. Each Friday, we had
four tables of enthusiastic players. The usual migra-
tions of members back from summering in northern
latitudes is essentially completed for the year,
though we had some absences for trips to enjoy the
annual Appalachian autumn leaf color riot, said to
have been particularly spectacular. Except for some
beach erosion, Florida was largely spared the agony
of the subway-flooding, boardwalk-destroying furies
of Hurricane Sandy that were imposed upon our
highly populated U.S. northeastern seaboard. For
this we are grateful, and we are deeply sympathetic
with the victims.
On October 5, John Lampe brought in two vari-
eties of delicious cakes—one amaretto-flavored and
one rum-flavored—to share with the group in cele-
bration of his wedding anniversary, which had oc-
curred in mid September. The excellent cakes were
enjoyed by all.
October 19, Clarice and I shared donuts in cele-
bration of our 21st wedding anniversary.
Jenny Clifton started her annual practice of
sharing her harvest of Meyer lemons on October 12.
She does this every year, picking and bringing in a
weekly supply of the big lemons. I have avocado
trees that I share with my very active local squirrel
population. Our warm last winter allowed my trees
to produce a good crop this year. I try to bring them
to bridge to share with those bridge players who like
them. I gave one to our Beardall Senior Center con-
tact, who hails from Jamaica. I know through expe-
rience that my green-colored avocados do not ripen
on the tree, but start to ripen when picked. Squirrels
quickly learned this and now work to cut the fruit off
to let it ripen on the ground before eating it. I have
always simply picked them when they looked big
enough, and they seem to dutifully ripen within
about a week. But my Jamaican expert advises me
that near the end of maturity, the fruit skin becomes
very shiny, but for good flavor, should not be picked
until the shine disappears. I am presently waiting
anxiously until all my now shiny avocadoes turn
dull! There you are: more than you ever needed to
know about picking avocadoes!

Volunteer tax-aide counselors are needed for the
AARP Tax-Aide Program. Counselors help prepare
tax returns and assist with filing requirements for
older taxpayers and others. Computer skills, an apti-
tude for tax work, experience in filing personal re-
turns, and good communication skills are needed.
Volunteers are trained by AARP in cooperation
with the Internal Revenue Service. Training begins
in January in the Orlando area.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation's larg-
est volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance ser-
vice. For details and to volunteer, contact:

REALM is supporting the Seniors First holiday
gift drive as we have done for the past four years.
This group performs excellent work in the commu-
nity and this gift will be the only one some seniors
will receive. Just purchase a new towel (or towel
set) or a blanket throw, wrap it in colorful holiday
paper, and attach a tag. You can deliver it to one of
the Seniors First locations or call Tom Goslin (321-
278-3743) for pick up.
See page 23 for a gift tag and more information.

Ask the right questions when choosing a
Financial Advisor
You may be considering help from a financial
planner for a number of reasons. Whatever your
needs, working with a financial planner can be a
helpful step in securing your financial future. These
questions will help you interview and evaluate sev-
eral financial planners to find the one who is right
for you. You will want to select a competent, quali-
fied professional with whom you feel comfortable,
one whose business style suits your financial plan-
ning needs. Use this interview checklist:
Q1. What experience do you have?
Find out how long the planner has been in prac-
tice and the number and types of companies with
which she has been associated. Ask the planner to
briefly describe her work experience and how it re-
lates to her current practice. Choose a financial plan-
ner who has a minimum of three years experience
counseling individuals on their financial needs.
Q2. What are your qualifications?
The term “financial planner” is used by many
financial professionals. Ask the planner what quali-
fies him to offer financial planning advice and
whether he is recognized as a Certified Financial
Planner™ professional or CFP® practitioner, a Cer-
tified Public Accountant/Personal Financial Con-
sultant (CPA/PFS), or a Chartered Financial Con-
sultant (ChFC). Look for a planner who has proven
experience in financial planning topics such as in-
surance, tax planning, investments, estate planning
or retirement planning. Determine what steps the
planner takes to stay current with changes and de-
velopments in the financial planning field. If the
planner holds a financial planning designation,
check on his background with the CFP Board or
other relevant professional organizations.
Q3. What services do you offer?
The services a financial planner offers depend
on a number of factors including credentials, licens-
es and areas of expertise. Generally, financial plan-
ners cannot sell insurance or securities products
such as mutual funds or stocks without the proper
licenses, or give investment advice unless registered
with state or Federal authorities. Some planners of-
fer financial planning advice on a range of topics but
do not sell financial products. Others may provide
advice only in specific areas such as estate planning
or on tax matters.
Q4. What is your approach to financial planning?
Ask about the type of clients and financial situa-
tions she typically likes to work with. Some plan-
ners prefer to develop one plan by bringing together
all of your financial goals. Others provide advice on
specific areas, as needed. Make sure the planner’s
viewpoint on investing is not too cautious or overly
aggressive for you. Some planners require you to
have a certain net worth before offering services.
Find out if the planner will carry out the financial
recommendations developed for you or refer you to
others who will do so.
Q5. Will you be the only person working with me?
The financial
planner may work
with you himself or
have others in the
office assist him.
You may want to
meet everyone who
will be working
with you. If the
planner works with
professionals out-
side his own prac-
tice (such as attor-
neys, insurance
agents or tax spe-
cialists) to develop
or carry out finan-
cial planning rec-
ommendations, get
a list of their names
to check on their
backgrounds.\\
Q6. How will I pay for your services?
As part of your financial planning agreement,
the financial planner should clearly tell you in writ-
ing how she will be paid for the services to be pro-
vided. Planners can be paid in several ways:

REALM News—December 2012—Page 12
A salary paid by the company for which the planner works.
The planner’s employer receives payment from you or oth-
ers, either in fees or commissions, in order to pay the plan-
ner’s salary.
Fees based on an hourly rate, a flat rate, or on a percentage
of your assets and/or income.
Commissions paid by a third party from the products sold to
you to carry out the financial planning recommendations.
Commissions are usually a percentage of the amount you
invest in a product.
A combination of fees and commissions whereby fees are
charged for the amount of work done to develop financial
planning recommendations and commissions are received
from any products sold. In addition, some planners may off-
set some portion of the fees you pay if they receive commis-
sions for carrying out their recommendations.
Q7. How much do you typically charge?
While the amount you pay the planner will de-
pend on your particular needs, the financial planner
should be able to provide you with an estimate of
possible costs based on the work to be performed.
Such costs would include the planner’s hourly rates
or flat fees or the percentage he would receive as
commission on products you may purchase as part
of the financial planning recommendations.
Q8. Could anyone besides me benefit from your rec-ommendations?
Some business relationships or partnerships that
a planner has could affect her professional judgment
while working with you, inhibiting the
planner from acting in your best interest.
Ask the planner to provide you with a de-
scription of her conflicts of interest in
writing. For example, financial planners
who sell insurance policies, securities or
mutual funds have a business relationship
with the companies that provide these fi-
nancial products. The planner may also
have relationships or partnerships that
should be disclosed to you, such as busi-
ness she receives for referring you to an
insurance agent, accountant or attorney
for implementation of planning sugges-
tions.
Q9. Have you ever been publicly disciplined for any unlawful or unethical actions in your professional career?
Several government and professional
regulatory organizations, such as the
National Association of Securities Dealers
(NASD), your state insurance and
securities departments, and the CFP Board keep rec-
ords on the disciplinary history of financial planners
and advisers. Ask what organizations the planner is
regulated by, and contact these groups to conduct a
background check. All financial planners who have
registered as investment advisers with the Securities
and Exchange Commission or state securities agen-
cies, or who are associated with a company that is
registered as an investment adviser, must be able to
provide you with a disclosure form called Form
ADV or the state equivalent of that form.
Q10. Can I have it in writing?
Ask the planner to provide you with a written
agreement that details the services that will be pro-
vided. Keep this document in your files for future
reference.

Our own Dean Warren has published a book
that is available for purchase through him
immediately or via Amazon or Barnes and Noble in
a few weeks. The e-book can be downloaded at
Xlibris.
Most of us remember Dean as the director of
Strategic Planning at Lockheed Martin Electronics
and Missiles Group. But that assignment was just
one more in a long career that included stints
overseas and in the U.S. for the State Department
and Lockheed.
Dean Warren was an early
participant in the nuclear story. His
father, Dr. Stafford L. Warren, was
chief medical officer of the
Manhattan Project, setting safety
standards, guiding the first
detonation, leading the initial team
into Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and
fighting with admirals to protect
from radiation hazards the 42,000
men and women who attended the
Bikini atom bomb tests. Dean
Warren was himself a radiation technician at Bikini.
In 2004, Dean Warren published a memoir, The
Bomb and Its Deadly Shadow, based on his and his
father's experiences.
Dean attended UCLA, The London School of
Economics, and Harvard. While in London, he and
two other graduate students drove from London to
New Delhi, India, and later recalled this adventure
in From London to New Delhi by Car in 1951.
In Imaginings, Dean presents selected stories
involving modern issues such as the clash of science
with culture, the gender war, means of avoiding the
ills of age and death, the future of mankind,
deployment of Star Wars, the politics of a space
empire, facing the disasters brought by global
warming, death, dealing with the invasion of aliens,
genetic hybridization, peacemaking, inventing faster
than light travel , settling a new planet, corporate
behavior, and a Palestine solution.

REALM News—December 2012—Page 19
By Ann Hartle
As mentioned in the July 2011 issue of REALM
News, Tom Barnes’ wife, Chun, had surgery for
stomach cancer. From August through November
she underwent chemo/radiation treatments and was
then declared cancer free. That was the good news;
however, Tom recently sent this update on Chun's
health situation:
“Immediately following the chemo/radiation
treatments, Chun contacted a severe case of shin-
gles, which then developed into PHN (Post Herpetic
Neuralgia). The PHN continues to this time with no
end in sight as there is no cure, only treatment with
mild meds/lidocaine patches. PHN has been known
to last for years, depending on its severity. Our pri-
mary care doctor recommends that all seniors over
65 get the shingles vaccine. The shot can keep one
from either getting a severe case of shingles or pre-
vent one from getting PHN if they do get the shin-
gles. Seniors are vulnerable to severe shingles if
they had chicken pox as a child; the virus stays in
our bodies for life and can reappear as we age.
Walgreens, CVS, Publix, Walmart and our family
doctors carry the shingles vaccine and Medicare plus
secondary medical insurance covers the shot just
like the flu and pneumonia shots.” Chun and Tom
highly recommend we should all help prevent/limit
PHN with a shingles vaccine shot.
Update on Bill Abney: As noted in the June
issue of REALM News, Bill suffered a stroke in Au-
gust, 2011. His wife, Sylvia, reports he is walking

What’s going on in the Wagner household?
June’s doctor’s comment to her was he would like
to see her continue to use her walker as he does not
want her falling again because of her past hip re-
placements. Her feeling? She will not use a walker
when she goes out because that’s only for “old peo-
ple”! She would rather use a cane and rely on Walt
to support her!
She is home and doing well but still has a lot of
pain in her lower back and is trying to minimize it
with medicine. Walt, after passing out at home and

As mentioned in the March
and June 2012 issues of REALM
News, Sandy Hulsey’s husband,
Q.B., is suffering from a malig-
nant brain tumor and cancer in
his right lung. As of October
26th, Q.B. has stopped all treat-
ments and is now under the care
of Vitas Hospice. Sandy says,
“continued prayers are requested
for him to be as comfortable as
possible and that strength and
patience continue for me as the

The REALM member we never had
A 53-year career and a life of great contributions
A few short weeks ago, Nancy Briggs passed
away. Nancy was the go-getter who never joined
REALM. She never joined because she never re-
tired. She enjoyed 53 years of working, all at Lock-
heed Martin and its heritage Martin Marietta.
Lockheed Martin featured Nancy in its employee
publication recently. Here are some excepts.
When Nancy Briggs began her career with
Lockheed Martin, Dwight D. Eisenhower was Presi-
dent; “All Shook Up” was a hit song by Elvis Pres-
ley and the Soviets launched Sputnik I, the first arti-
ficial satellite. The year was 1957.
Over 50 years later, Nancy, a senior administra-
tive assistant at Missiles and Fire Control in Orlan-
do, has witnessed major advances in technology,
experienced a significant increase in her salary and
was a proud participant in Lockheed Martin’s 50-
year anniversary celebration at the Orlando facility
in 2006.
How did you begin at Lockheed Martin? What are some of your earliest memories?
As a 19-year-old Orlando native in 1957, I was
in the right place at just the right time. I started off
typing the purchase requisitions for the interior de-
signer who decorated the library, cafeterias and ex-
ecutive offices (then called Checkerboard Square)
with furniture, drapes, wallpaper and artificial or-
ange trees to add a Florida flavor. Back then we
punched timecards; coffee and food were not al-
lowed at our desks; and every Friday at 4 p.m. we
were directed to stop work to scrub our linoleum
topped desks.
In late 1957, my department, Plant Engineering,
was one of the first to move into the newly complet-
ed Main Plant. We were moved to the west end of
the first floor. It was a big, wide open area west of
the cafeteria. I sat at a small central switchboard and
rang each desk manually. As sections of the floor
were tiled, we moved east toward the cafeteria and
other groups filed in behind us.
In the early 1960s, Sand Lake Road was a two-
lane nightmare and one of the few access roads. Se-
curity guards directed traffic in the parking lots. Caf-
eterias were so busy we had to save seats for our
lunch partners and in order to get a new ballpoint
pen from stationery stores, we had to turn in an old
one.
How has technology changed since you began with the company?
Technology in my field has taken us from manu-
al typewriters to electric typewriters to computers.
The latter two were very foreign to me and a great
source of frustration. In the early 1970s, secretaries
typed all of the proposals. Errors and changes re-
quired typing, retyping, cutting and pasting
(literally). Thankfully, computers came in the mid-
1980s and after a little training, I learned to love
mine.
What are the factors of your success?
My parents were hard-working and dedicated
people. They ran their own business, and my siblings
and I followed their lead in developing a good work
ethic. Working for Lockheed Martin with daily chal-
lenges has inspired me to push to do my best and
seek advice from successful people when I need it.
What’s the most memorable moment during your time with the company?
Nancy Briggs. Continued on Next Page.

The Smithsonian Institution, sometimes referred to as “the na-
tion's attic,” received a bit of electronic history from Central New
York.
On Nov. 16, at the National Museum of American History in
Washington, Lockheed Martin handed over a transistor radio proto-
type developed in Salina, N.Y., and built in 1953.
The radio was built at what was then General Electric and is
now Lockheed Martin by a team led by Arthur Stern. It was un-
veiled in New York in 1954.
The prototype has been sitting on a desk at Lockheed Martin
for years, said a company spokesman.
GE’s commercial model reached the market in 1955, a few months behind the Regency TRI, developed by
Texas Instruments. GE’s Model 678 cost $50 -- equal to $420 in today's dollars.

Jim Buchan and Lillian Long were married November 8,
2012, at Christ The King Episcopal Church in Orlando. Jim and
Lillian are well-known among the REALM crowd as active par-
ticipants in a variety of REALM activities.
Jim and Lillian have been a committed couple for quite some
time and it was a real pleasure for many of their family and
friends to participate in the tying of the knot.
Congratulations!
The “Long” wait is over Jim and Lillian tie the knot.

There have been quite a few memorable mo-
ments for me, but one that comes to mind is cele-
brating my 50th anniversary at the ceremony which
recognized Lockheed Martin’s 50 years in Central
Florida and the dedication of the Research & Devel-
opment building, with MFC President Jim Berry and
Florida’s then-Governor Jeb Bush in attendance.
A few years ago, Nancy and her husband David celebrated her 50th service anniversary at Lockheed Martin.

Multiple targets
engaged in first
integrated ballistic
missile test
Lockheed Martin’s Aegis
Ballistic Missile Defense Sys-
tem, (PAC-3) Missile
and THAAD Weapon System
successfully engaged in the first-
ever test of all three systems
demonstrating the integrated ca-
pabilities of today’s U.S. region-
al missile defense systems.
These systems worked to-
gether to detect, track, engage
and negate two ballistic missile
targets and one cruise missile-
like target during a complex, live
-fire flight test conducted by the
Missile Defense Agency (MDA)
at the Reagan Test Site on the
Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pa-
cific.
Known as Flight Test Inte-
grated-01, these different sensors
and weapons systems were inte-
grated through the Command
and Control, Battle Management,
and Communications
(C2BMC) system, also devel-
oped by Lockheed Martin. The
C2BMC is the integrating ele-
ment for the Ballistic Missile
Defense System and links
the various sensors and
weapon systems.
The flight test began
with an Extended Long
Range Air Launch Target (E-
LRALT) missile airdropped
over the broad ocean area
north of Wake Island from a
U.S. Air Force C-17 aircraft,
staged from Joint Base Pearl
Harbor-Hickam, Ha-
waii. The AN/TPY-2 X-band
radar, located with the THAAD
system on Meck Island, tracked
the E-LRALT and a THAAD
interceptor successfully inter-
cepted the Medium-Range Bal-
listic Missile. THAAD was oper-
ated by soldiers from the
32nd AAMDC.
Another short-range ballistic
missile was launched from a mo-
bile launch platform located in
the broad ocean area northeast of
Kwajalein Atoll. The PATRIOT
system, manned by soldiers of
the 94thAAMDC, detected,
tracked and successfully inter-
cepted the target with a PAC-3
interceptor. Additionally, a se-
cond PAC-3 interceptor also in-
tercepted a low-flying cruise mis-
sile target over water.
The USS Fitzgerald (DDG
62) successfully engaged a low
flying cruise missile over wa-
ter. The Aegis system also
tracked and launched an SM-3
Block 1A interceptor against a
Short-Range Ballistic Missile
(SRBM). However, despite indi-
cation of a nominal flight of the
SM-3 Block 1A interceptor, there
was no indication of an intercept
of the SRBM.
U.S. defense shares drop
sharply after Obama
victory By Andrea Shalal-Esa
Nov. 7, 2012 (Reuters). U.S.
weapons makers took a pounding
in the stock market Wednesday
as investors priced in leaner
times after President Barack
Obama’s re-election. Analysts
had predicted gains for defense
industry shares if Republican
Mitt Romney had won the White
House. He had pledged to boost
military spending.
But Obama's victory will
continue the downward trend in
defense spending, as the govern-
ment struggles to cut budget defi-
cits and draws down the military
presence in Afghanistan, analysts
said.
Shares of Lockheed Martin,
Northrop Grumman, General
Dynamics, L-3 Communications,
and Raytheon were down be-
tween 5.8 percent and 4.5 percent
in early trading. Boeing shares
were down 2.6 percent. The Dow
Jones industrial average was
down 2.3 percent.
Thanks to you … Lockheed Martin news
A Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor is launched from Meck Island on its way to an intercept of a ballistic missile target during MDA’s historic flight test on October 24, 2012 (October 25 on Kwajalein).
