This research addresses importance of the thermal insulation for construction

building in the Middle East & Africa.

In order to reduce the energy demand for cooling and heating, we should

consider all the energy schemes both inside and outside buildings.

Exterior Insulation and Finishing Systems (EIFS), have been developed in

Europe in the early seventies and since then have proven to be a reliable solution

for reducing energy consumption inside buildings. Nowadays EIFS is applied

world-wide on external walls of buildings in order not only to reduce energy costs

by 30% to 70% for heating and cooling systems, but also to provide a healthier

and more comfortable living environment.

We will address also the fire regulation related to the system.

Building envelop insulation' Why?

 Reduce energy consumption related

to climate control equipment usage

in buildings

 Reduction in energy cost for

buildings

 Reduction in carbon footprint of

buildings operation

 Increase thermal comfort for

buildings occupants

 Preserve property and structure

 Depending on design, could shift

electricity peak load by more than 12

hours.

Non-ventilated façade application (ETICS/EIFS)

 Advantages:

 Efficient insulation (no thermal bridges)

 Cost saving during building

construction as well as operation

 Provides freedom in design options

 Durable

 Light weight

ETICS/EIFS is the only option to retrofit a

building and improve the performance of

the building envelope by a factor of 10 or

more.

 When a proper maintenance procedure

is in employed, the system expected life

could exceed 60 years.

from its outer face with an external cladding

assembly with a cavity generally after the insulation.

 Fire event could initiate from

inside or outside of a

building.

If left to develop, the fire will

reach flashover and extend

to other building

compartments.

If the fire extends to a

compartment at the outer

perimeter then it could

breakout from any opening.

 Exterior cladding interaction

with flames could impact the

risk of fire spread.

A focus on the safety in the event of fire:

Mechanism of fire spread

Fire travelling through cladding system

 the effect of cavities

Cavities could be part of the exterior

cladding design or a result of the fire event

itself.

When confined by external cladding, the

flames elongate to 5 to 10 times its original

length seeking oxygen and fuel.

If the material used for cladding or insulation

contribute to the propagation of fire, the

potential exist for the fire to affect multiple

stories simultaneously.

 In non-ventilated facades (ETICS/EIFS) the

cavities does not exist by default.

Weak points within facades in an event of fire

 Above openings (windows or doors).

Area with accessibility – high traffic or

ground level.

 Exposed (non-covered surfaces) during

installation.

The goal is to contain fire from spreading

directly above the origin.

 Use fire barriers

Page 14: Realizing Sustainable Buildings by Using Thermal ...qualitycontrolme.com/quality2015/Presentation/Sanaobar.pdf · Realizing Sustainable Buildings by Using Thermal Installation Systems

Fire barriers how does it work?

Fire break protection:

 Applied continuously (without any gaps)

to full building circumference. The goal of

this method is to provide an efficient

limitation of fire in the thermal insulation

layer in each story where it is applied.

Lintel protection:

Applied above every opening in the

façade (door or window). The goal of this

method is to prevent fire penetration from

an internal source where the fire breaks

out through the opening to the thermal

insulation layer

Fire break protection Lintel protection

Always use a non-burnable insulation

medium for the fire barrier (class A2 –EN 13501-2 or non-combustible – ASTM

E136)

the surfaceplate anchor with screw

hammer-in anchor

Please note that mechanical fastening does not replace the adhesive mortar.

This would result in a high susceptibility to cracking.

Critical factors – application of EIFS

Humidity

 Water vapour diffusion has

to be considered in order

to prevent the built up of

condensate which can

cause damages.

 In hot an humid climates

with AC a permanent

water vapour pressure

difference between

outside and inside air

exists.

 High humidity penetrating

in the concrete in

combination with high

temperatures can

accelerate carbonation

and corrosion of the

reinforcement.

NFPA 286 is tested Locally by TBWIC

This standard provides a test method for

determining the fire propagation

characteristics of exterior non-load-

bearing wall assemblies and panels used

as components of curtain wall

assemblies that are constructed using

combustible materials or that incorporate

combustible components.

 The Intermediate Scale, Multistory Test

Apparatus (ISMA) consists of two rooms

arranged vertically, which are open in the

front. The test specimen is constructed

on a frame, which is placed against the

apparatus and sealed to it. There is a

burner in the lower room, and also a

‘window burner’ which is placed from the

outside and ignited after 5 minutes.

Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) services primarily for the building construction sector

NFPA 286 is tested Locally by TBWIC

The Test is checking the ability of:

 Resist flame propagation over the

exterior face of the wall assembly

 Resist vertical flame propagation within

the combustible components from one

story to the next

 Resist vertical flame propagation over

the interior surface of the wall assembly

from one story to the next

Resist lateral flame propagation from the

compartment of fire origin to adjacent

compartments or spaces

There are Some of subsystems that get

tested such as Insulation, Cavities,

Weather Barriers, Fire Barriers, & Brackets

EIFS has proved to have a superior energy efficiency by reducing heat

transmission by approx. 50%

Improved energy efficiency helps to reduce harmful emissions typically

associated with energy production such as CO2 emissions and other by-products

Superior EIFS energy efficiency reduces required air conditioning equipment

capacity and limits the physical effects of temperature fluctuations hence

reducing structural stress

EIFS can be applied to new and existing structures.

The application of ETICS/ EIFS is determining factor for the sustainability of the

system

Restrict the use of the insulation medium (EPS) to the fire retarded grade (SE) &

employ a fire barrier system

Conclusion
