General Information of HUST

Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST) is one of the key

national universities directly under the leadership of the Ministry of

Education of P. R. China. It is located in the south of Yujia Hill in

Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei province, which is situated in the

center of a thoroughfare leading to all neighboring regions. A new

Huazhong University of Science & Technology, a merger of the former

HUST, the former Tongji Medical University, the former Wuhan Urban

Construction Institute and the former Wuhan Science & Technology

Vocational College, was established in 2000. The University ranks at the

top of China's leading universities in comprehensive strength, covering

science, engineering, medicine, art and management.

The total area of HUST occupies more than 7000 hectares, with

beautiful scenery in the courtyard and a spacious and comfortable

environment for study.

With more than ten years of continuous construction and development, the

total area of the library of HUST covers more than 5000 square meters at

present. Its collections are more than 410,000 copies, concerning with nine

disciplines such as engineering, art, management and medicine. The

comprehensive collections system is formed, which science, engineering

and medical recourses play a dominant role with humanist, economic and

management literature taking up a small percentage.

The library possesses altogether three electronic reading rooms and one

multimedia classroom, which can provide more than 300 computer

terminals for information retrieval. The Library adopts the entire open-shelf

approach in the document circulation. It opens more than 84 hours per

week for students and teachers. As for digital resources, it is provided on

library website 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

The activity of Reading Month is hold in our library annually. During the “reading month” period, series of activities, such as lectures and exhibits are held in our library. Interesting new books and periodicals are often recommended by the librarians on the bulletin board of library. Meanwhile, the activity of choosing best users is an effective method to inspirit readers to read more books.

Reference and Information Service Desk (RFISD) provides assistance and advice to patrons, individual library patrons in obtaining documents and information. RFISD answers patrons' questions on finding material from library collections and accessing to the catalogs. Collections include printed books and periodicals, microforms, electronic databases, etc. RFISD also helps patrons be skillful in searching CD-ROM networking databases, online databases and Internet resources. Patrons can submit their questions at desk, by phone, or via email. Some guiding material, such as introduction to the OPAC, user's guide of databases, subject guide to the library resources and services, can be obtained at the Desk.

Novelty Search Center is authorized by the Ministry of Education of P.R.C. with the aim at providing novelty search service for the research community of HUST. What is called Novelty Search is to gather related bibliographic documents by retrieval and ultimately offer a reasonable, analytical report after investigation and comparison, according to a given research project .

The purposes of novelty search includes:(i)Awards Application for Sci-Tech Achievements; (ii)Patent Application ;(iii)Appraisal for Sci-Tech Achievements ;(iv)Sci-Tech Project Determination Technology Import .

The Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery Services (ILL/DDS) Section was established in HUST Library. The ILL/DDS is nonprofit. We have been focusing in high-performance service to support coursework, research and teaching. We require ILL and DDS from internal or international libraries and information centers. It is available for registered students, faculty and staff of HUST.

We assumed the item of “the research and practice of the sharing of foreign periodical information resource in Hubei province”, and finished the database construction of academic foreign periodical Union Catalog of Hubei province. Now, the database includes over three thousand bibliography records of printed periodicals, over five thousand and five hundred of electronic journals, and about three hundred thousand catalog records of periodicals, and serve users through our campus network.

Hardware and Software

HUST is the node of China Education and Research Network

(CERNET) in central China area. As a part of “project 211” of HUST,

high-speed computer information network had been established in

last century. Users can surf INTERNET through CERNET in our

campus. 。

Several years after construction started, the website of HUST

Library has become a website with the richest information resources.

The storage of our library servers has reached to 24TB.

More than twenty computer servers are in the possession of HUST

Library, which are supporting 24 hours per day and 7 days per week

information retrieval service.

EXCELLENT MANAGEMENT

Through more than seven years’ practice, an administrative regulation, which is to make the whole workflow going smoothly, has been created. That is, a management system that from library curator, system librarian to subsystem administrators has been built in HUST Library.

OUTSTANDING SYSTEM

SILVER version of INNOPAC system is adopted by the Library. It supports eighty concurrent users and infinite web users. The system server is SUN fire V800 which has four Central Processing Units (CPU) and eight GB SDRAM.

“No investigation, no right to speak.” After complete investigation, we decided to resolve resource-sharing problems start with reference rooms’ periodicals. A periodical retrieval system will be built in INNOPAC System where series of periodical information possessed by each reference room can be accessed.

It is a general method for sharing periodical information that periodical bibliographic items which have been preprocessed by catalogers are added into INNOPAC System one after another. However, it is a complex and inefficient work.

According to the investigation, we abandoned the general method and chose a simple way to realize resource sharing.

The Steps to Publish Periodical Information of Reference Rooms

Various training projects must be on the top of the list, for the staffers in reference rooms should master the INNOPAC system very well.

The questionnaire about periodicals in reference rooms should be sent out, for it is a good way to collect periodical information.

According to the analysis of the questionnaire, new entries will be added in INNOPAC System; meanwhile, we choose 996 field to describe the information where the periodical come from.

For a hyperlink is added in INNOPAC system, users can access the Chinese and foreign language periodical collections in reference rooms on library’s website.

The network had been established in East

Branch Campus Library in 2001.

By the end of 2003, retrospective

bibliographic database had been created,

which composed of about 200,000 records.

5,000 patron records had been loaded into

system.

College reference room in October this year. The

reference room has no library management

System? The problem that the same book of Tongji
