    Reality Warper

"Martha, does ourHero Insurance cover Reality Warping?"

"Today's seminar is about a subject near and dear to my heart: Reality Benders. TypeGreens. Mary Sues. Bixbies, Shapers,Wizards, Gods, Devils, Outside Observers, callthem what you will, these are the guys that change reality based on perception andwillpower."Transcript of Dr. Clef's Seminar, "Reality Benders and You: How To Survive WhenThe Universe Doesn't ", SCP Foundation

Ever heard of the Superpower Lottery? Well, kid, you just won the grand prize. You can create, change, or destroy things or even alter reality just by thinkingabout it.The key issue here is how far they can take this. A character with a mild formof this power (which isn't seen very often) may be able to will a new subatomicparticle into existence. A ridiculously overpowered character may be able tohiccup and accidentally tear the very fabric of the space-time continuumasunder. High-end Reality Warpers tend to also be Reality Makers. Forthe reallyhigh end ones, see The Omnipotent.Needless to say, running into characters with such powers can be incrediblychancy. Arguing with the more powerful ones may well be futile, especiallysince they can literally, in the words of Paul fromTheDungeonmaster(orAdam Savage), reject your reality and substitute theirown.Since absolute power corrupts absolutely, a character with this high a level ofpower is quite likely to go bad. They might even deem themselves to be gods.Especially for the higher-end ones, it's hard to dispute this assessment.

In both modern Speculative Fiction and older folklore, moderate versions ofthis ability are almost standard-issue forevil Elves, Genies (literal orotherwise, wish-based or otherwise), various other supernaturalbeings,Sufficiently Advanced Aliens, and Tricksters (particularly GreatGazoo), which makes this Older Than Print at least. The common modern

fantasy concept of a Wishinvokes this premise; *poof* and stuff happens.Cartoon Characters also often employ this ability as a gag. Eldritch

Abominations are also sometimes capable of this, usually to horrible ends.Protagonists are almost neverthis character type; what's the point of astory when you can just end it right then and there? If the protagonist is one ofthese, expect them to eitherhave a reason fornot using it or for all of theantagonists to have powers on a similar or greater scale.Writing characters like this can be a challenge, given how easily this abilitycan turn into a Story Breaker Power. Nothing can really pose much of aphysical threat, unless you make liberal use ofPlot-Induced Stupidity or makethem Forget the Phlebotinum. Such characters are especially prone to TheWorf Effect and Deus Exit Machina. For the same reasons, Reality Warpersthat are antagonistic towards the protagonists are prone to Just Toying withThem. For a funny way of doing Reality Warpers in, see Puff of Logic. Not to be confused with Master of Illusion, since those are onlypretendingtochange or create things (although it's not unheard of for a reality warper to becapable of creating illusions and indeed the two tropes occasionally overlap).True Reality Warpers often incorporate Shapeshifting of all varieties as wellas Winds of Destiny, Change (not to mention heaps and heaps ofMind

Screwing).Compare Author Powers, Your Mind Makes It Real, Clap Your Hands If YouBelieve, and Spacetime Eater.Rewriting Reality is a subtrope, often paired with a Tome of Fate orRealityWriting Book. This trope has nothing to do with I Reject Your Reality, though some Warpersmay indeed have that attitude.

    Examples:

    OPEN/CLOSE ALL FOLDERS

ANIME AND MANGA Poron from Sally The Witch. Mre exactly, when she throws a tantrum

and starts crying (well, she is a little girl no older than five), her magicalpowers go haywire and start warping whatever's left in hersurroundings.

Haruhi Suzumiya. For that matter, Yuki and Ryouko, as well. Theirpowers aren't as rule-breaking as Haruhi's, but they can still

launch MySQL injections into reality. And to take game-breaking to aneven more absurd degree in Disappearance, they can even hijackHaruhi's unlimited power! The difference between Haruhi and theInterfaces is that Haruhi can create "data" out of nothing while theInterfaces can "only" alter existing data.

o Related to the trope notes above, there is a good reason why Haruhican get away with being a protagonist anda Reality Warper; Shehas no idea what she is or what power she holds. Most of her warpingis done through childishly wishing something to be different.

InGurren Lagannthe main mech creates drills from sheer willpower forno explained reason other than boiling blood. The main plot of theseries was thatthe Anti-Spirals were afraid of the spiral races creatingso much matter through spiral power that they would turn the universeinto a black hole, bringing about Spiral Nemesis. Ironically, they were

beaten by Simon creating a mech over 10,000,000 light years tall tobeat them.

EmperorCharles in Code Geass attempts to become a reality warperwith his Ragnarok Connection. He's foiled when Lelouch uses hisGeass on Godand warps reality right back again...and destroys hisparents in the process.

In the thirdPokemonmovie,The Spell of the Unown, the Unown havethis power, and create Entei, who in turn grants a girl's wishes with thepower. This quickly becomes supremely dangerous.

o Several other Psychic and Ghost type Pokemon are said to have thisability too, most notably Gardevoir, who can actually create a wormholeout of thin air just by thinking about it. Though, to be fair, it's impliedthat doing so would cost the Gardevoir its life due to sheer strain, so it'sa rather limited example.

o Palkia, the Pokemon of SPACE ITSELF, who relocated a town toanother dimension in the tenth movie.

o And Arceus, the creator of everything in the Pokemon universe.

Serial Experiments Lainslowly reveals that Lain herself can doanything.

    Guu can do anything.

One episode ofMushishifeatured a swordsmith infected with a mushithat let him foresee disasters and warn people beforehand. Ginko gavehim a medicine that would suppress them, but after his daughter diedduring something he hadn't dreamed of, he stopped taking it. Turns outit was actually a mushi that brought his dreams to life -

causingunnatural disasters. He wouldn't have foreseen what killed hisdaughter because it was a normal disaster. And, one night, he dreamedof his entire village dying gruesomely...

    Drosselmeyer and Fakir fromPrincess Tutu.

The Onmyou mysticism ofAbenobashi Mahou Shoutengaiworks likethis - and doesn't. It depends on yourPower Level and wish to ScrewDestiny.

The Big Bad of the 12thDragon BallZmovie, Janemba was a RealityWarper so powerful that it had virtually complete control of the afterlife, having resurrected everyone even, and especially the old BigBads, their corresponding dragons, and an army ofMooks, and yeseven Those Wacky Nazis were revived along with Hitlerhimself, andmanaged to trap Enma Daiou, the Lord and Judge of the Dead himselfin a large jelly button-shaped prison, and managed to transform Hell into

a play-land full of floating jelly beans. Much of which was in one go.o East Kaioshin has shades of this ability, though probably only to a

limited extent. We see him create an extremely powerful (and fictional)metal. Piccolo has also been seen "materializing" things.

o Majin Buu seems to be able to alter matter with his head tentacle. Hisfamous "turn into candy!" is the most common use of this power, usedfor the first time against Dabura, but it's also how he builds his house.

The main character ofPsycho Bustershas a variant on this ability: Ifsomething life-threatening happens to him, he goes back in time and

does it all over again. Repeatedly. Until, by pure random chance, something happens to negate the harm done to himfor example, aroof tile falling at exactly the right moment to deflect a bullet flying at hishead, or a psychokinetic projectile just barelymissing him...five times ina row. He's not consciously aware of this at first, so apart fromoccasional deja vu, he's under the impression that he's just ridiculouslylucky.

A Certain Magical Index: Aureolus Izzard. "Alchemist" my ass.

o Subverted. Master of Illusion combined with Clap Your Hands If YouBelieve is his true power. As pointed out by Stiyl, if he really could warpreality, why couldn't he just wish a vampire into existence?

o To a lesser extent, every single Psychic. Their powers work bysubstituting their own reality onto the world.

Bleachhas Inoue Orihime, who can reject reality, depending on hercurrent emotional state.

o Fullbringers in general seem to all be minor-scale reality warpers, because Fullbring manipulates the "souls" in "matter", which iseverything in reality. Among their powers, we have a "timemanipulation" ability, an ability that affects "probability", and a swordthat can alter the past of anything it cuts (both living and inanimate).

o They don't out right say it, but that is what Orihime and Chad are, dueto Ichigo's spirit energy jumpstarting their abilities, exposure to hollowswhen either young or unborn gave them the capability, Ichigo himself ishalf that, the fullbringers unlock his fullbringer abilites when he loseshis shingami ones, and eventually take those away too. then he getshis shingami ones back, they haven't explored it further than i someodd occations where his powers violate some rules, ususally just inhow much power he has.

o This is what Aizen becomes with the Macguffin he was looking for, until

Ichigo starts beating him and he loses control, eventually becomingweaker than originally, but indestructible, so he is imprisoned ratherthan executed, or perhaps they just cannot replace the executionmethod Ichigo destroyed.

Ichigo eventually unlocks an ultimate move which makes him mergewith his spiritual selves, his sword and hollow(which mergedthemselves in the process of him learning this), possibly acting as theopposite of this trope, immune to Aizen's powers. Or else he was justthat strong when he used it that Aizen was shocked into losing controlof his power.

At the end ofNeon Genesis Evangelion, Shinji Ikari gets a bit ofthis. Maybe.

o Rei Ayanami too actually. This "might" have been the goal of GendoIkari all along as the only means to resurrect Yui Ikari. At the very least,Rei may have been given/returned her status as Co-Creator of theUniverse, and possibly created new alternate universes for otherShinji's to live in and be happy. The other Co-Creator, Kaworu Nagisa, essentially relinquished his powers too, so Rei is essentially becomeGod. Probably. Maybe. Ok, it's still confusing...

Potentially, it seems the EVA's are actually designed to be able to dothis for whoever can efficiently control them and combine them with theright materials. Only EVA-01 ever succeeded so far...but yeah, it doeshave a tendency of causing reality to mess up just by its own existenceat times. The Angels themselves too, since some of them can beclassified as their own entire sub-universe.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chroniclereveals that Clow Reed (yes, the dudefrom Cardcaptor Sakura) was one of these. Just by wanting her to notdie, he causedYuuko to become undead for hundreds of years.

This is the true power set of theRahXephon. The whole point ofthe ancient conspiracies going on throughout the series is to influencethe pilots so they will reshape reality in a certain way.

InMahou Sensei Negima!, Fate Averruncus seems to have a form ofthis ability. He's apparently able to rewrite the reality of the Magic World, mainly because it's actually an artificially created dimension, which canbe modified on the fly, up to the point of erasing magic world nativesfrom existence. The source of the power is a set of items that allowsthem to utilize the power of the mage that created the magic world in thefirst place. However, it has a rather glaring limit in that it doesn't appearto directly work on beings not originally from the magic world.

o Actually, it's not Averruncus, but Asuna who has this ability. Fate ismerely abusing her power.

o Also Nodoka, however briefly, when she steals one of theaforementioned items from one of the bad guys and uses it to teleportherself and Asakura. The bad guy recovers it soon after, but it's still animpressive feat.

o Jack Rakan is also a notorious violator of the rules of reality. Not onlyhe breaks the laws of magic, but also did temporarily summonedhimself into existence after being erased. He did this by SHEER

FORCE OF WILL. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobohas demonstrated this ability, but only when it's

    funny.

Miharu ofNabari No Oucan do this, thanks to theShinrabanshou (which means 'everything in the world'). It actually isharmful, though; previous usersincluding the last vessel, hismother, have been killed by it.

Ai Enma fromHell Girlseems to be able to do this, as seen when she'ssending people to hell and during the season one finale, when she'sbullying Tsugumi to make her send her father to hell. Although maybe

she was just mind raping her, it's not very clear.

InNaruto, Izanagi, a forbidden cast-on-self Genjutsu(illusion/hypnosis) of the Uchiha clan allows them to turn any real injuryinflicted on their body, up to and including death, into a genjutsu andleaving the user alive and intact. It doesn't come cheap: the controlling

which is what he used to separate the 10-tails into the nine tailedbeasts.

Ayakashi Ayashiborrows a healthy dose of this trope for Yukiatsu. HisAyagami can weaponize the kanji in people's names, plain andsimple. How freakin' badass is that?!

Kara no Kyoukaireveals that Ryougi Shiki's third personality is this, dueto the person's connection formed with Akasha.

In the Eureka Seven movie, Holland explains that Renton & Eurekacould create the "Agony of Doha" event which could reshape the worldas they envision, like for example, a world where time stops ticking. It is

Kyuubey claims thatPuella Magi Madoka Magica's main charactercould have this power if she accepted the contract to become a MagicalGirl. Come episode 12, it looks like he was right.

o Kyuubey himself also has this power in a limited way, since he's able togive people reality-bending magic powers and can magically grantwishes, including the causality-defying, multiverse-rewriting wish

Madoka makes at the end. The "demon" of the Advina Avis (aka Ronnie Suchiart) fromBaccano.

The full extent of his reality warping abilities haven't been demonstrated, but so far include materializing and dematerializing matter at will, bestowing forbidden knowledge, granting people immortality and otherabilities (as well as slapping on whatever perks and restrictions hewishes), appearing anyplace at anytime, global mind-reading,and shifting in and out of human form at will. Generally, it doesn't goaround doing these sorts of things very often, however, because nigh-omnipotence can become quite boring after several-hundred millenia.

feared member of the family, who can grant wishes like a genie...butwith a really nasty catch.

Sakura Yoshino ofDa Capois a witch, but didn't get trained on how tocontrol her powers because her grandmother (also a witch) died whenshe was young. To protect her, her grandmother plants a wish grantingcherry tree. In the original visual novel you learn however that Sakura isgranting the wishes HERSELF and the tree is only a symbol of herpower. Which is why she must excel at absolutely everything she doesor people who might beat her at something will suffer accidents andpossibly die. This is why she flees Japan for America and graduatesfrom college at age 15 because to do otherwise would doom everyonearound her.

o In Da Capo 2she's still alive and still a child presumably because herpowers are still in effect from the first game despite the cherry tree

having died further confirming the power is within herself. Haruka inNoeinis possessed of a power known as the "Dragon

Torque", which gives her the ability to do stuff like visualize alternateuniverses, survive interdimensional travel with no problems, and beunaffected by time stops. Unfortunately, she doesn't have any realcontrol over this power, and its use is mostly instinctive.

Rustyrose fromFairy Tailis only limited by his imagination.

In the 2012BlackRock Shooteranime, Black Gold Saw demonstrates

these kinds of powers in Other World. Though, even with this utterly

broken control over the entire world they exist in, Black Gold Saw is nomatch for the real threat.

In DateALive the Realizermakes "human imagination into reality" andpowers the setting. The result is a bit like a Standard Super HeroSetting, where most tech is modern day, with a few organizationshaving access to much more advanced stuff. The Realizer is used toimplement a variety of superpowers, but is implied to have a number oflimits. The talent to be able to use it is very rare(used as a justificationforChild Soldiers), along with having fairly significant limits with regardto the range and complexity of powers that can be created; clothing

changes, flight, super strength and defensive shields can all be created, but the AST needs to have pre-made weapons rather than creatingthem themselves. It's also mentioned as the way to quicky reconstructdamaged caused by various battles and supernatural events.

The Marvel Universe has numerous examples:

o Franklin Richards on the side of good. Unfortunately for the heroes butfortunately for any sense of drama in the stories, he's too young tounderstand how powerful he is.

o Proteus on the side of bad. Fortunately, he seems to have limitedrange, and limited ability to make permanent changes. If he could, he'dmakeEmperor Jokerlook like a day at the park.

o David Haller aka Legion, son of Charles Xavier, which is actually onlyone of his Combo Platter Powers, but each comes with him having anew/different alternate personality.

o On the "insane, or is he?" side, you have Psylocke's wacky brotherJamie. He sees the world as a collection of "quantum strings," and bymanipulating those, he can manipulate... well, due to Power Creep,Power Seep, it went from "everything around him" (think Proteus) to

"everything, period" (think Q.) It's a good thing for all involved that the"mad" Jamie is more of a Bunny-Ears Lawyerwho actually knows whathe's doing with his increased power.

o On the side of whoever's holding them, the Cosmic Cubes. Except forthe ones that have evolved into sentient beings, which they invariablydo if they last long enough.

o The Beyonder, who was waaay too powerful for his own good.Although he did not know how to defecate until Spider-Man patientlyshowed him how. Way to take one for the team, Spidey. Beyonder was

later revealed to have formed from a not-quite-complete Cosmic Cube.o Doctor Doom towards the end ofThe Secret Wars, which ended up

being his undoing, as he was tricked into thinking about scenarios thatwould bring back his defeated opposers to fight him, thus making ithappen.

o The Molecule Man, Owen Reece, who can manipulate reality thanks tohis ability to reshape molecules. This power comes from the missingfragment of the Cosmic Cube that formed the Beyonder, whichincidentally left him immune to Beyonder's power. Unfortunatly forReece, he's always had one big problem: a serious lack of self-

    confidence.

o The Scarlet Witch was the entire cause of the recent rebootattemptHouse of M. She recreated the world once so that mutantswere in charge and then reset it back to almost right, except that therewere no more mutants. (Well, other than 198, and all the rest whosuddenly started getting their powers back.) And that was after killing

off her husband and some of her friends, which destroyed theAvengers, when she initially lost it.

o Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan of the Young Avengers, has similar powers tothe Scarlet Witch and may very well be the reincarnation of her lostson. So far, the worst he's done is knock out a bunch of bad guys, butthat was enough to make the Avengers nervous.

o Mad Jim Jaspers was so powerful in his reality warping that two incomic universes had to be shut down because the writers had no ideawith what to do with him and the universes.

A weaker Mad Jim from an alternate world was so powerful, hisuniverse had to be destroyed. If the main (616) Mad Jim were to befully powered, that may not be enough.

Merlyn:This version of Jaspers. Is too powerful, too dangerous. His

counterpart could at least be halted, even if it meant destroying his entirecontinuum. This one is not so easily containable. And if he cannot bedefeated, then the omniverse shall fall into chaos, and a new and hostile godshall play dice with matter.

Given that it was made by use of his powers and taking into account itssomewhat imaginative attitude to having a healing factor, the Furymight well count as well.

o The Impossible Man from the planet Poppup, one of the FantasticFour's earliest adversaries. He generally only displays shapeshifting in

regular continuity. But a very creepy version of him appeared inthe Exiles, where an alternate-universe Impossible Man became semi-psychotic due to a botched mind control attempt on him. He turned the

Avengers into paper dolls, transmogrified most of the population ofWashington DC into glowing butterflies, and didn't realize any of whathe was doing he was just trying to be funny. Thankfully, he managedto undo it all once he broke free.

o InX-Statix, Arnie Lundberg was a Reality Warper who, before his HeelFace Turn, terrorized his home town in a manner reminiscent of "It's AGood Life". Oddly, he could inflict transformations on others, but

couldn't fix his own severely scarred face.o In a back-up story in an issue ofX-Men Classics, the Watcher

speculated that the ability to alter the fundamental nature of reality isthe ultimate power of the Phoenix Force. She falls well short of the likesof the Scarlet Witch at the height of her powers in practice. DarkPhoenix did destroy a solar system, but it was by using a star as fuel;sucking up part of its energy caused an imbalance that caused a

supernova, rather than her erasing it with a wave of her hand orsomething. She can use her maxed-out telekinesis to rearrange anobject's subatomic particles until you get some other kind of matter -she once turned a tree into solid gold easily - and she has power overlife and death as part ofThe Phoenix motif, so she's perhaps on

    the lowend of this list.

It was sometimes implied that Phoenix's power was limited only byGrey's imagination. Dark Phoenix's destruction was somewhat limitedby the fact that Jean was fighting against herself. She easily couldhave killed all the X-Men, but couldn't bring herself to do it. As Phoenixbefore she became Dark Phoenix, she unconsciously limited herabilities so that at some crucial moments she tried to channel morepower, but instead a mental circuit breaker was tripped, shutting off thepower completely.

o The Sentry started out as a Flying Brick with various other ill-definedpowers, but it seems the truth is he has control over matter itself.

He killed the Molecule Man in about two seconds and can resurrecthimself even after being disintegrated on a molecular level. It's saidthat if he went completely batshit insane, the Scarlet Witch (House ofM and Decimation) would be nothing by comparison. Since whencontrolled by the Void he levelled Asgard in a matter of moments justthrough his flying brick powers, this is worrying. After going through aspectacularTrauma Conga Line, he has now chosen to be dead. However, for the Sentry in particular, Death Is Cheap.

o The Ultimate Avengers version ofLoki. It seems via somehow tappinginto the Odinforce, he is able to do things like change Thor into a mortalform, make himself immune against Mjolnir, change the color of thesky, and teleport a host of monsters, among other uses. The trick is, hecan't use it too many times at once or much of it without alerting Odin toit.

o The Shaper of Worlds could alter reality on at least a planetary scale, but lacked imagination and so had to use others' dreams as a template.(This was because he was an evolved Cosmic Cube. In fact, his true

o The ring of the superhero Freedom Ring can manipulate reality within asphere of a radius of 15 feet, due to the ring holding a shard of aCosmic Cube. This is a rare case of very limited reality warping, as ifany creation leaves the sphere, it fades from existence.

o Absorbing Man once used his power to duplicate the properties of aCosmic Cube. Stuff got very strange when he started punching stuff, like transforming people's costumes into older versions.

o The obscure oneshotX-Mencharacter Mister Marvel put an interestingspin on this. He could alter reality, all right... but the changes to theuniverse he made were perceptible only to him. In effect, he was livingin a fantasy world of his own design. To himself (and only himself) hewas the world's greatest superhero; the rest of the world saw him as afrail old man. ThenHouse of Mhappened, and suddenly he was a frailold man for real.

o Doctor Strange at full power can do astonishing things to the fabric ofreality, but for the most part he polices reality warpers rather than actsas one himself.

o Ms. Marvel dealt with a kid with such powers once in her own series.

FromDC Comics, the inter-dimensional imps Mr. Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite(on the Chaotic Neutral side).

o In "Emperor Joker," Mr. Mxyzptlk accidentally gives most of his powertoThe Joker(on the extremely Chaotic Evil side!).

Earlier, at the end of the Bronze Age Batman/Hulk crossover, the

Joker got reality-warping power from the above The Shaper ofWorlds (Marvel).

o Then there's The Spectre, who's able to warp reality in someparticularly inventive ways, especially when it comes to killing sinners. Not surprising, given he's God's Vengeance incarnate.

o The mother of Cascade inSovereign Seven: She remodels allof herEarth (architecture, fashion, technology level, etc.) every fewminutes. It turns out she began as a normal (but very powerful)superhero who prevented an alien invasion but failed to stop the aliens

The mysterious Strangers inDark Cityuse this to Mind Screw theircaptive humans. Technically, they're high-powered telekinetics that canwarp matter into new shapes; individuals can only use it to levitateacross the city and occasionally conjure doors out of solid walls (thoughtheir leader, Mr Book, is vastly more powerful); as such, the Strangers

perform their best work in perfect unison, combining their powers andamplifying it through machines to reshape the City. The hero Murdockfinds he has this ability as well- and is so powerful that he can createentire landscapes at will once he learns how to control his abilities.

Several villains inThe Matrix(and, later, the heroes) mixed a little of thisinto their combat.

o Although technically they aren't warping reality per se, but rather, manipulating the rules of a virtual reality.

o The most vivid example occurred near the end ofThe Matrix Reloaded,

as Neo flies as fast as he can through the city to rescue a falling Trinity. The power of his bending causes a massive wake that drags cars anddebris behind him.

Bruce Almighty But, then again, he's borrowing the ability from God...

Sutter Cane fromIn the Mouth of Madnessappears to gain this abilityonce he finishes his reality-warping novel. For example, he brieflymakes the entire world turn blue, temporarily removes a padded cellfrom time, and rips his face open like paper to reveal a portal to anotherworld. And naturally, he declares himself a god.

The Beast in thePoltergeistmovies (a composite spiritual entity createdby, and mostly represented by, the ghost ofPreacher Kane, introducedinPoltergeist II The Other Side) seems to be capable of this, opening upspatial rifts that lead into other dimensions, warping rooms into AlienGeometries, controlling the weather and bringing everything from toyclowns and trees to braces and mirror images to life. Some of its powersinvolve creating illusionsrather than truly reshaping reality, but the linebetween the two isn't always clear.

This is the entire point behind the architects inInception. Their job is tocraft dreamworlds that the rest of the teams move through, while at the

same time creating mazes to trap and confuse the subconsciousprojections of the dreamers' minds so as to keep them from attacking.Being architects, however, they can also alter the dreamworld'sproperties to further confuse and fight the projections, but the more theyshift and alter reality, the faster the projections converge, the moreviolent their responses, and the more heavily they are armed.

InThe Traveler, Mr Nobody has such an ability whereby whoever hearshis "confession", it will become a reality. Pretty broken ability for aghost.

Jareth the Goblin King inLabyrinth he can cause the LivingLabyrinth he rules over to spring traps on the heroine and her friends at

just the right moments, conjure things from thin air, and manipulatetime. In fact, the climax has him tempting her to give up her quest withthe promise that he can give her anything she wants. But while he haspowers over time and space, she realizes that he doesn't have anypower overherand stating this is enough to defeat him.

    LITERATURE

It appears that Little Pete fromGonemay be one of these, which meansthat the most powerful person in Perdido Beach is a severely autistic

four-year-old. First-tier Sundered Ones inThe Sunderedhave this power. Notably,

one of them seems able to just rearrange the world willy-nilly.

Quite a few literary wizards have at least a mild form of this power.

o Merlyn inThe Once And Future Kingby T. H. White.

o InThe Chronicles Of Amber, the Lords Of Amber actually do this inreverse. Instead of changing the universe, they move themselves intosuccessive nearly-identical universes more to their design. Althoughthe question of whether they actually travel into pre-existing universes

or actually will them into existence, or even if they can grasp a fourthspace-time dimension unknown to us (not unlike a 3-dimensional objectwould seen from the perspective of a 2-dimensional one) is never reallyclarified.

o Wizards inHarry Potterhave the power to conjure things using theirmagic. However, there are some specific rules as to what can beconjured and what cannot be, such as food. (Whether this is a limitationof magic itself or a wizard law isn't entirely clear, but at least it'saddressed.)

It's a limitation of magic. Hermione cites the "five exceptions to Gamp'sThird Law of Elemental Transfiguration" as the reason they can't pooffood into existence. Sounds a lot like something she got fromMcGonagall, not from the wizarding lawbooks.

Considering that the Wizarding Ministry is at that point run by the BigBad, and the trio are public enemies 1, 2 and 3, I doubt Hermionewould be bothering about breaking the law at that point.

Harry Potter wizards also have potions and curses that subtly affectreality. Harry takes a potion that makes him luckier, shifting events(including the will of one man) to his favor, and it's heavily implied thatVoldemort actually casts a curse that makes sure that every teacherappointed to the Defense Against the Dark Arts job only lasts a year.

Without fail, at the end of every year something will happen to get ridof the teacher.

This doesn't mean "illusions" as in stage magic, just "not actuallycreating things." For instance, you can conjure food and waterbut ifyou do it with illusions, they won't fill you up or quench your thirst, and

if you do it through reality warping, you've probably destroyed theuniverse, or at least put it in serious danger.

Warper to date. In the sequel, Anthony's daughter is also a warperinfact, she's more powerful.

The title character in the HG Wells short story The Man Who CouldWork Miracles does exactly what it says he does.

Harold of the children's picture bookHarold And The PurpleCrayonmatter-of-factly shapes his world by drawing it with the crayon.

Adam fromGood Omens. Being a child, his unconscious alterations ofreality are innocently whimsical at first...until his destiny as the Antichristcalls. He manages not to end the world through Heroic Resolve anduses his power to prevent a showdown with the Devil himself.

o Crowley and Aziraphale, being a demon and an angel respectively, also have reality-warping powers, though to a lesser extent. Forinstance, Aziraphale can turn cheap rotgut wine into "a perfectlyacceptable, though rather surprised" fine older vintage. Crowley can

turn the weapons of a management-skills-retreat paintball war into realguns.

The Pink, one ofThe Brothers Grimm fairy tales. In the story, the princeis capable of granting his own wishes. Unfortunately he's not very smart.Upon finding out that the man he was raised by kidnapped him as ababy in order to exploit his abilities, the prince turns him into a poodlethat eats hot coals until he belches fire. Then, instead of wishing himselfto his real home, he turns his girlfriend into a pink (as in aDianthusarmeria plant) so it's easier for him to travel, and walks all the way

there. Upon getting home, his mother, who was wrongfully imprisonedfor his presumed death, commits suicide. His father then dies ofheartbreak. The kidnapper is sentenced to death, placed in an ironmaiden, and rolled down a hill into a river. The prince marries hisgirlfriend, becomes king, and lives happily ever after.

Really powerful beings in the Nasuverse sometimes have access topowers called Marble Phantasm and Reality Marbles. The former letsthe user control probability so that anything with a chance of occurringnaturally will happen, while the later changes reality to conform to theuser's will. So named after an analogy with a jar of marbles having

exactly one white one and 99 others of various colours. While MarblePhantasm lets you always pick the white one, Reality Marble simplyturns all the marbles white.
