Reality to Illustration Artwork Assignment: Create an artwork that utilizes both drawing and/or painting & photo manipulation . Your artwork will combine the two techniques to create an image that plays with photo realism and illustration. You may approach this assignment in various ways:

• “Drawing vs. Photography” style artworks (ie. Ben Heine). Demonstrate photo manipulation and drawing skills. You may hand draw images on paper and scan them, digitally draw, and/or digital line art with the pen tool. (Must show advanced skill and time and effort.)

• Digital Painting and photography style artwork: utilize photographs and digital painting skills. You may also hand paint areas and scan them in.

• Line Art and Photo: Create an artwork that utilizes the pen tool and Line Art.

• Photo and Vector Shapes: Create an artwork that utilizes both photos and vector shapes using the pen tool and/or vector shape tools.

Requirements:

• Incorporate a drawing/painting/vector illustration into the photo, (either using the stylus and tablet, pen tool, or a drawing on paper turned into line art or a digital painting) to tell a story, create humor, create interest, add a fantasy element, etc.

• Drawings/paintings should show time and effort, advancing skill with the stylus, brush tools, mixer brush, etc.

• If including hand painted or hand drawn elements must show advanced skill, excellent craftsmanship, time and effort. *NO STICK FIGURES ALLOWED

• Demonstrate advanced Photoshop skill with blending photos and imagery: color adjustments, levels adjustments, seamlessly blending photos with masking…

• Unity: Demonstrate unity by gradually transitioning from illustration to photos. Limit your color palette.

• Have a unifying theme. • Must demonstrate advanced skill in photo manipulation and

your chosen medium of illustration.

Subject Matter: A scene/environment with objects, animals, designs, people, portraits, etc.

• Use the pen tool and paths • Vary line weight with brush dynamics (fade and pen pressure) • Include a creative background • Emphasize LINES • Use a specific COLOR SCHEME • Include a unique element: Photo to drawing, out of bounds,

surreal transition, text, etc. • Add TEXT in creative ways

Use a combination of the following to digitally paint:

• Include Shadows and Highlights with Hue/Saturation Adjustment layers

• Add value: shadows and highlights with digital painting
