Realising the role of the modern teacher in a digital world.

Kanak GuptaApril 25, 26 2017

“The belief that it is easy to live in 21st Century with 19th

Century Mindset would prove fatal to our new Generation.

The sole purpose of Education is make the new generation think and do things different from the current one and instill new

attitudes and values relevant to fast changing world.

It is unfortunate that Most educational Institution worldwide did not take into account the needs of Generation ‘Y’ while we

are already approaching Generation ‘Z’.

The reason is most institutions are happy adopting a standard curriculum with copy and past attitude, or confusing digitization

as a process with usage of devices! “

About Jaipuria Group

Challenges include the issues of teacher turnover, accountability, changing student populations and studentexpectations, mounting budget pressures, and intensedemand to build students’ 21st century skills.

Most Importantly: Student Centric

The digital revolution is transforming our work, our organisations and our routines. It is transforming the way children and young people play, access information, communicate with each other and learn. But, so far, this revolution has not transformed most schools or most teaching and learning process in classrooms.

No, it is NOT merely information technology!

It is integrating a digital

perspective in every area of

education, with the STUDENTS in the midst of it all!

We are living in a Digital World…1. Over 2.0 Billion people participate in the Digital Technologies globally and growing

at @45% p. a.

2. India is the 4th largest digital nation – 200 Million people are Net Savvy and growing at @120 % annually

3. Digital Technology influencing almost all sector of Economy – Health, Education, Banking, Retail, Rural development and Social Awareness; Governance, Security; Film and Entertainment; Broadcasting; Knowledge Management; Branding, Media and PR, Travel and tourism, and So on

4. Offers advantages such as Speed; Cost Reduction, Retrieval and Reuse, Outsourcing, Mass Customization; Innovation; Consumer Centric Practices; Result driven Business Processes; Global reach almost at no cost

5. Sustainability of most Businesses are now dependent on Internet and Digital Based Business Models

The world is now marching towards Generation Z, whilst we have not caught up with Generation Y yet.

We collaborated with Universal Consulting for a nationwide research. Here are the key findings.

• It is important to base our conclusions on perceiving learning as knowledge creation, rather than emphasizing mere knowledge acquisition. 21st century skills are integral parts of learning.

• Learning takes place between people and their cultural surroundings. It is

therefore important to develop collective cultural practices, physical learning

environments, and institutional routines (e.g. assessment) to support

engagement, innovation, and knowledge creation at school. Paradoxically, this can be done by supporting local agency and participation. Create digital learning environments.

• The knowledge practices of digital natives are different from previous

generations, even though there is no reason to assume that their cognitive

system is profoundly different from ours. They have just extended their minds

differently with new kinds of tools.

• Well-being and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) are at least as important as other 21st century skills (such as media literacy, cultural awareness, and complex problem solving). Arts, music, sports, and handicraft are also important for balanced emotional and cognitive development.

• Instead of computer-supported learning, it would be advisable to talk about new forms of Socio-Digital Participation (SDP). This includes media literacy, such as using social media and search engines.

• There is no evidence that learning styles or types would be informative in designing learning environments. Alternatively, it would be advisable to observe users’ motivational profiles or study orientations. Meaningful and engaging learning methods are advisable, which support collaboration and self-regulation.

• Pedagogical innovations are needed – technological innovations are often pedagogically weak. Fragmented projects start and end, but fundamental structures remain the same. Systematic development of flipped and inquiry-based learning programs with meaningful use of technologies would be advisable.

• We need constant reforms in schools and teacher education. The schools are not following the important developments of society. We have perhaps spent too much time looking at test results, such as PISA.

Time take for new innovation to be adopted by 25% of US population

Given the hectic schedules of teachers, it’s at times impossible to have

teachers learn such modern tools. It’s not just knowing what, it’s how .

We understand that. Hence, plan teacher training well ahead of time.

At least 100 contact hours a year. Pedagogy, classroom management, new tech, projects, etc.

BOTTOM LINE

We better catch up with the changing trends in the society.

The WTF world would not care for courses and management education suitable for the 1960s

And is the digital world related to marketing only?

NO. The digital world encompasses every thing in the world. Every management function.

SO, WITH SO MUCH HAPPENING, HOW DO WE GET TO THE ROLE OF THE MODERN TEACHER?

First of all, Benchmark with the best, but don’t blindly imitate

Internalize. Be Original. Let ideas evolve.

BAT‘s image of itself as an EOC and graduates‘ perception do not correspond.

The world we live in• The private sector and governments must

work together to create new human resources

policies that better prepare students and

workers to meet the challenges of the

emerging digital economy.

How do we use technology to enhance teaching and learning?

We have a duty to our students to use technology to enhance teaching and research.

We have a duty to ensure that all of our students have an appropriatefamiliarity with the technology that is sorapidly remaking the world.

How do we use technology to enhance teaching and learning?

By using technology to enhance teaching andlearning, we improve our core function as a Chain of schools, and give our students the skills they need to function effectively in the world of work.

Characteristics of good teaching:

•Instructors are well prepared.

•Instructors excite and motivate students

•Instructors communicate effectively with their students.

•Instructors bring latest information to students

Characteristics of successful learning:

•Students gain and retain knowledge of the content of the course.

•Students develop critical thinking skills.

•Students integrate knowledge within and across disciplines.

•Students develop the ability to work in a team to solve a problem.

Using technology to enhance education

The use of modern instructional technologies enhances teaching, and learning, by promoting all of these characteristics.

Enhances how we teach

New instructional tools:

• Require that instructors are well-organized and adaptable.

Enhances how we teach

New instructional tools:

• Require that instructors are well organized and adaptable.

• Bring text, sounds and images to enrich and enliven the classroom.

Enhances how we teach

New instructional tools:

• Require that instructors are well organized and adaptable. • Bring text, sounds and images to enrich and enliven the classroom.• Improve communications between instructor and student.

Further enhancements

• More content available outside the

classroom, asynchronously.

• More interaction in the classroom.

• Increased use of research methods in

undergraduate courses.

Enhancing Education

The best teachers and researchers should be

thinking about how to design courses in

which technology enriches teaching rather

than substitutes for it.

• It cannot be claimed that being a digital native necessarily indicates effective or sophisticated use of technology in educational settings. In order to cultivate complex personal and social competencies, adolescents need systematic support from parents and teachers.

• It is also quite likely that there is a gap between the informal knowledge and media practices of digital natives and the practices of educational institutions.7 Young people need to discover meaningful ways of using technology for learning purposes and collaborative knowledge creation.

• There is no evidence that students’ learning styles are the key to designing personalized learning. Meaningful learning matters more. Instead of being denied technological tools, the pupils should learn how to use them in socially and pedagogically acceptable ways. They need to learn how to regulate their own use of mobile devices inside and outside school.
