IT’S ALL ABOUT MONEY Studies have shown that finances are frequently blamed for high divorce rates in America; specifically when it comes to disagreements about managing household finances. It’s not uncommon for one partner to focus on saving for the future while the other sees nothing wrong with maxing out a credit card. Often, this single issue can eclipse everything else in what is otherwise a successful relationship. That’s where we can help! The CWCD is offering a FREE Marriage and Money Workshop where students can learn the importance of communication, shared planning, creating a budget, common credit mistakes, investment strategies, tax deferred savings and types of life insurance. The course is scheduled for Tues., Apr. 10, from 6:15 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. at the ATC (room 220) at Lee College.

The CWCD will also have a workshop on Negotiating Your Electrical Bill for individuals interested in learning how to read their smart meter. This hands-on workshop will help students better understand their electrical consumption and identify what they should be paying for their monthly electrical bill. Bring your entire electric bill, pen and paper. Cost: $19. Courses are scheduled for Tues., Apr. 17, from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the Education Center - South Liberty County and Thurs., May 24, from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the ATC (room 221) at Lee College.

  • STUDENT

SUCCESS STORIES The U.S. Department of Labor’s H-1B Ready to Work Grant can change your life! But don’t take our word for it. This is what our students have to say …

Grady Washington, 33, was born and raised in Baytown. Prior to enrolling in the U.S. Department of Labor H-1B Ready to Work Grant (DOL Grant) at Lee College, Washington was employed by Walmart at a distribution center doing general warehouse work. He decided to apply for the Grant looking for an opportunity to improve his career and life.

Washington decided on instrumentation after being inspired by his brother, who also works in the field. “He

enjoys his job and the hours and pay are great,” says Washington about his sibling. He enjoyed the Program saying, “The staff and instructors made the class easy. They really put their all into it.”

Washington has successfully completed his training and will continue to achieve his next goal of finding a career in the field. When asked what advice he would give to other students considering applying for the Grant, Washington said, “Do it now!”

    DO ITGO AHEAD AND

Gerardo Guerrero, 20, was born in Texas and has lived in Baytown for 12 years prior to relocating from Pasadena. He worked in construction for many years, but decided to apply for the DOL Grant in hopes to find better employment opportunities. Guerrero pursued the Welding Program after having enjoyed some previous experience in the field. “I did a little bit of welding before and I loved it. Plus, I heard about how much money can be made in the field and decided to go for the opportunity,” he said. Guerrero enjoyed the “positive environment” of the course in addition to the fact that “They don’t just teach you about welding, but also what else is used in the field.”

Guerrero successfully completed the training. His next goal includes finding a job in the field, or possibly enrolling in credit courses. His advice to other students who are considering applying for the DOL Grant is, ”Go ahead and do it. If you’re interested in a certain field, try it out and finish the training. Then decide if that type of work is what you want to pursue.”

  • IT WILL PAY OFF Corey Arvie, 35, was born in Galveston and has lived in Baytown for over two and half years, after having relocated from Anahuac. He worked as a general laborer and was trying to figure out how he was going to get into instrumentation when he heard about the DOL Grant from a friend. “I was looking for a better future and saw it as a sign from the Lord,” Arvie said. He found the most challenging portion of the training to be math, but credits this to having been out of school for years. Arvie did, however, enjoy the classes and meeting new friends.

His next goals include finding a career and running his own work crew. He encourages prospective students to “Just do it! It will pay off!”

TAKE A CHANCE TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW

Mark Martinez, 22, was born and raised in Baytown. While Martinez got by doing electrical work for industrial contractors, he was unsure of what he wanted to do with his career. Martinez was looking to better his future for both himself and his family, which prompted him to apply for the DOL Grant and pursue a certificate in the Instrumentation Program. “I was really interested in learning something new and different,” he said. Martinez recalls that the most challenging part of the training was learning things outside of his “comfort zone,” but was encouraged by the many new friends he met along the way. Martinez encourages other students to “Go for it and take a chance to learn something new.”

STOP WAITING David Sanders, 36, was born in Webster. He had been underemployed since November of 2014 and, after struggling to get by, decided to apply for the DOL Grant. Sanders recalls, “I had already been wanting to go back to school and it was the perfect opportunity.” Sanders enrolled in the Electrician Program and loved it!

“My instructor was awesome. I had more fun in this course than I’ve had in a long time,” Sanders said. He has since been hired by UTLX Manufacturing as a mechanical technician. His advice to prospective students is simple … “Stop waiting!”

Project LeeWay at Lee College Project Leeway at Lee College has given hundreds of students the chance to overcome significant personal challenges and transform their lives through higher education. Funded through the Carl D. Perkins grant, Project LeeWay assists economically disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, displaced homemakers, students with limited English proficiency and single parents (including single, pregnant women) with services like childcare assistance, textbook assistance, and transportation assistance in the form of gas cards or bus tickets for technical students pursuing 6 or more credit hours at Lee College. Eligibility of services is determined by financial need and availability of funding. The Project LeeWay office also houses community resource information for referrals, and the Lee College food pantry, which are open to all students.
